Electronic Structure and Surface Physics of Two-dimensional Material Molybdenum Disulfide

Jin, Wencan January 2017 (has links)
The interest in two-dimensional materials and materials physics has grown dramatically over the past decade. The family of two-dimensional materials, which includes graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, phosphorene, hexagonal boron nitride, etc., can be fabricated into atomically thin films since the intralayer bonding arises from their strong covalent character, while the interlayer interaction is mediated by weak van der Waals forces. Among them, molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) has attracted much interest for its potential applications in opto-electronic and valleytronics devices. Previously, much of the experimental studies have concentrated on optical and transport measurements while neglecting direct experimental determination of the electronic structure of MoS₂, which is crucial to the full understanding of its distinctive properties. In particular, like other atomically thin materials, the interactions with substrate impact the surface structure and morphology of MoS₂, and as a result, its structural and physical properties can be affected. In this dissertation, the electronic structure and surface structure of MoS₂ are directly investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and cathode lens microscopy. Local-probe angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of monolayer, bilayer, trilayer, and bulk MoS₂ directly demonstrate the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition due to quantum confinement as the MoS₂ thickness is decreased from multilayer to monolayer. The evolution of the interlayer coupling in this transition is also investigated using density functional theory calculations. Also, the thickness-dependent surface roughness is characterized using selected-area low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and the surface structural relaxation is investigated using LEED I-V measurements combined with dynamical LEED calculations. Finally, bandgap engineering is demonstrated via tuning of the interlayer interactions in van der Waals interfaces by twisting the relative orientation in bilayer-MoS₂ and graphene-MoS₂-heterostructure systems.

Achieving Ohmic Contact for High-quality MoS2 Devices on Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Cui, Xu January 2018 (has links)
MoS2, among many other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), holds great promise for future applications in nano-electronics, opto-electronics and mechanical devices due to its ultra-thin nature, flexibility, sizable band-gap, and unique spin-valley coupled physics. However, there are two main challenges that hinder careful study of this material. Firstly, it is hard to achieve Ohmic contacts to mono-layer MoS2, particularly at low temperatures (T) and low carrier densities. Secondly, materials' low quality and impurities introduced during the fabrication significantly limit the electron mobility of mono- and few-layer MoS2 to be substantially below theoretically predicted limits, which has hampered efforts to observe its novel quantum transport behaviours. Traditional low work function metals doesn't necessary provide good electron injection to thin MoS2 due to metal oxidation, Fermi level pinning, etc. To address the first challenge, we tried multiple contact schemes and found that mono-layer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and cobalt (Co) provide robust Ohmic contact. The mono-layer spacer serves two advantageous purposes: it strongly interacts with the transition metal, reducing its work function by over 1 eV; and breaks the metal-TMDCs interaction to eliminate the interfacial states that cause Fermi level pinning. We measure a flat-band Schottky barrier of 16 meV, which makes thin tunnel barriers upon doping the channels, and thus achieve low-T contact resistance of 3 kohm.um at a carrier density of 5.3x10^12/cm^2. Similar to graphene, eliminating all potential sources of disorder and scattering is the key to achieving high performance in MoS2 devices. We developed a van der Waals heterostructure device platform where MoS2 layers are fully encapsulated within h-BN and electrically contacted in a multi-terminal geometry using gate-tunable graphene electrodes. The h-BN-encapsulation provides excellent protection from environmental factors, resulting in highly stable device performance, even at elevated temperatures. Both optical and electrical characterization confirms our high quality devices, including an ultra-clean interface, a record-high Hall mobility reaching 34,000 cm^2/Vs, and first observation of Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations. The development of Ohmic contact and fabrication of high quality devices are critical to MoS2 application and studying its intrinsic properties. Therefore, the progress made in this work will facilitate efforts to study novel physical phenomena of MoS2 that were not accessible before.

An Initial Study of Binary and Ternary Ti-based Alloys Manufactured Using Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENSTM)

Gray, Alyn M. 12 1900 (has links)
In this study an initial assessment of the composition – microstructure – property relationships in binary and ternary Ti – based systems are made possible using LENSTM technology. Laser Engineering Net Shaping (LENSTM), a rapid prototyping, directed laser deposition methodology of additive manufacturing (AM) was used to create bulk homogenous specimens that are compositionally graded. Compositionally graded specimens were made possible by incorporating elemental blends of powder during the LENSTM process. While there have been numerous studies assessing the influence of common elements (e.g., V, Mo, Al, and Cr) on the resulting microstructure in titanium alloys, other elements have been neglected. A systematic study of the Ti – Fe – Al ternary system based upon varying compositions of the eutectoid former, Fe with Al to stabilize the a and b phases respectively has also been neglected. This research effort focuses on exploiting the LENSTM process by rapidly assessing the composition – microstructure – property relationships in a combinatorial approach for the Ti – W, Ti – Fe, and Ti – Fe – Al systems. Compositionally graded specimens of Ti – xW (0<x<40wt.%(14.79at.%)), Ti – xFe (0<x<35wt.%(36.37at.%)), and Ti – xFe – yAl (0<x<40wt.%(36.37at.%)), y=5,10, 15wt.%) have been heat treated to also assess the influence of thermal history on microstructural features such as phase composition and volume fraction. Lastly, a Ti – xMo (0<x<40wt.%(24.96at.%)) compositionally graded specimen was deposited to re-assess the Mo-equivalency nature of W, as well as assess the role of phase separation in microstructural evolution at temperatures above and below the invariant point (~695°C) of the Ti – W binary system.

Efeitos da substituição de átomos de molibdênio em catalisadores empregados nos processos de hidrodessulfurização

Martins, Claudinei January 2014 (has links)
Orientadora: Profa. Dra. / Computational methods were used to evaluate the effect of substitution of atoms of molybdenum by cobalt or nickel in the molybdenum sulfide catalyst used in hydrodesulfurization process. The study was conducted using two different approaches. Monte Carlo method was employed to determine the most probable structures involved in the thiophene and dimethyl sulfide adsorption process. Density functional theory-based methods were used to optimize the structures obtained by Monte Carlo and determine the adsorption energies. Validation of clusters employed in this study was performed by evaluating the bond distances between atoms, particularly atoms from the edges. The results presented herein demonstrate that Mo16S32 cluster can be used to represent the catalyst. Atomic charges analysis and frontier molecular orbitals were employed to evaluate the acidity of the different sites. These properties showed also that the replacement of molibidenium atoms by cobalt atoms results in increasing charge transfer and promotes new acidic sites.

Estudo do processo de fabricação de alvos de folhas finas de urânio metálico para produção de Mo-99 / Study of the process of fine metallic uranium sheet targeting for Mo-99 production

José Antonio Batista de Souza 05 October 2018 (has links)
Technetium-99m (99mTc) is generated from the decay of Molybdenum-99 (99Mo). This element is the most convenient radionuclide for application in medical diagnostic procedures, once that its gamma emission is well known and of easily detected. The method used to produce 99Mo is through fission of the 235U embedded in so-called irradiation targets. Two routes are being developed for the production of 99Mo per fission to the Brazilian Multipurpose Reactor (RMB), both using low enriched uranium (LEU): 1) The first basic dissolution, which is based on the technology of dispersion targets UAlx-Al. 2) The second employs the acidic dissolution of thin sheet targets of metallic uranium. The main advantage of uranium metal foil targets on the UAlx-Al dispersion targets is the high density of metallic uranium. In order to understand and optimize the process of manufacturing thin sheet targets, about the fusion of metallic uranium, thin sheet lamination, microstructural characterization and assembly of the target was carried out. Therefore the specific procedures for the production of this type of target with the characteristics of the targets manufactured internationally could be defined. The results showed that the process of manufacturing ingots and sheets of metallic uranium by hot rolling allows obtaining sheets with thickness between 250 and 300 μm. The cold rolling process allows obtaining thin sheets with a thickness of ± 125 μm which are in accordance with the international specification. The use of aluminum oxide as a material to prevent uranium tablet firing proved to be efficient, replacing with advantage the use of yttrium oxide. The microstructure after the heat treatment showed small equiaxial grains. A fast cooling of 5 minutes after the heat treatment was enough to eliminate the texture of the thin sheet of metallic uranium. The process of assembling the thin sheets in the tubular target was performed by preforming the thin sheet, facilitating the assembly. The process of consolidating the target was performed by tensile expansion and the clearance after consolidation (\"air gap\") was satisfactory. The final dimensions of the tubular targets have met the international specification.
