Dinâmica folicular de vacas de corte tratadas com três protocolos de sincronização da ovulação / Ovarian follicular dynamics in beef cows treated with three protocols of synchronization of ovulation

Melo, Luciano Cavalheiro January 2009 (has links)
This experiment was done to evaluate the ovarian follicular dynamics in beef cows treated with protocols of synchronization of ovulation where were used vaginal implants impregnated with progesterone or with medroxi-progesterone acetate and an ear implant impregnated with norgestomet, than the use of estradiol esters in different doses. Nine Braford cows, multiparous non-lactating, cyclic and BCS>=3 where used in these trial. The animals were kept confined and fed with hay and concentrated. The animals were divided into three treatments, which all animals went for three treatments in four replicates. In each replicate the animals were divided among groups homogeneously. Group 1 (n = 14), animals received on day 0, a vaginal sponge impregnated with 250 mg medroxi-progesterone acetate (MPA) and an intramuscular (i.m.) application of 2 mg of estradiol benzoate (EB); on day 8, the vaginal sponge was removed and applied i.m. 0.5 mg cloprostenol and 24 hours latter was applied i.m. 1 mg of EB. Group 2 (n = 7), the animals received on day 0, a silicone vaginal implant with 1 g of progesterone and an application i.m. of 2 mg of EB; on day 8, the implant was removed and applied i.m. 0.5 mg cloprostenol and 24 hours latter was applied i.m. 1 mg of EB. Group 3 (n = 8), the animals received on day 0, a silicone ear implant impregnated with 3 mg norgestomet and an application i.m. of 3 mg norgestomet and 5 mg of estradiol valerate; on the 9th day the implant was removed. From day 0, animals were examined daily by trans-rectal ultrasound with an 8 MHz linear transducer to monitor follicular and luteal dynamics. After removal of the implant in group 3 and after application of 1 mg EB in the other groups, the animals were evaluated by ultrasound two times per day until ovulation was detected. In group 1, seven animals lost a vaginal sponge impregnated with MPA and the data were removed from analysis. The three treatments groups were effective in promoting a new follicular wave emergence synchronously in 3,7 ± 1,1, 3,7 ± 0,7 and 4,9 ± 1,1 days (P = 0,059) in the groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Besides promoting ovulation a dominant follicle with few days of dominance and with satisfactory diameter in 66 ± 12, 66 ± 0 and 70,5 ± 12,7 hours after implant removal (P = 0,62) in the groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Therefore, the three protocols were effective in promoting the synchronization of ovulation and are indicated for use in fixed-time artificial insemination programs in beef cows.

Modelos de vértices exatamente integráveis / Exactly solved vertex model

Anderson Augusto Ferreira 16 March 2005 (has links)
In this dissertation we present the first application of a recent introduces Matrix Product Ansatz [8], in the exact solution of the transfer matrices associated to vertex models. The exact integrability is obtained through the diagonalization of the diagonal-to-diagonal transfer matrix. We studied two classes of models. In the first one we introduced new vertex models, that we call as interacting 5 vertex models. On these models beyond the nearest-neighbor interactions among the vertices, imposed by the ice rule, they also have repulsive interactions along the diagonal. The famous 6-vertex model is just a special case this class of models. The eigenspectrum of this transfer matrix, analogously as in the traditional Bethe ansatz, is obtained in terms of the roots of nonlinear equation. An analytical and numerical study of these equations we done on the first class. These results together with the machinery coming from conformal invariance allow us the study the model on its critical region. The second class of models we considered were the 10 vertex models that satisfy ice rules we obtained all the possible exact integrable models on this class, rederiving earlier results on the literature as were producing new ones.

Perceptions and Preferences of Commercial Fishers in the Florida Keys for Alternative Management Frameworks

Pierce, Brett P 09 November 2011 (has links)
The decline of the world’s fisheries, and the inability of traditional management frameworks to maintain them, has led managers to adopt new, alternative management frameworks. Alternative management frameworks include marine protected areas (MPA) and dedicated access privileges (DAP). The use of such frameworks has often been shown to be quite unpopular, especially with commercial fishers. In this thesis, commercial fishers’ preference for alternative management frameworks is examined in the context of the unique multispecies fisheries of the Florida Keys. By surveying commercial fishers, it was found that the size of operation plays no role in affecting fisher perception of dedicated access privileges. Furthermore, fishers who are organized are less likely to support dedicated access privilege frameworks. Finally, the fishing industry does not support the implementation of dedicated access privileges in the Florida Keys. These findings can provide inputs for managers in developing effective management plans in the region.

Applications of ocean transport modelling

Corell, Hanna January 2012 (has links)
The advective motion of seawater governs the transport of almost everything, animate or inanimate, present in the ocean and those lacking the ability to outswim the currents have to follow the flow. This makes modelling of advective ocean transports a powerful tool in various fields of science where a displacement of something over time is studied. The present thesis comprises four different applications of ocean-transport modelling, ranging from large-scale heat transports to the dispersion of juvenile marine organisms. The aim has been to adapt the method not only to the object of study, but also to the available model-data sets and in situ-observations. The first application in the thesis is a study of the oceanic heat transport. It illustrates the importance of wind forcing for not only the heat transport from the Indian to the Atlantic Ocean, but also for the net northward transport of heat in the Atlantic. In the next study focus is on the particle-transport differences between an open and a semi-enclosed coastal area on the Swedish coast of the Baltic Sea. The modelled patterns of sedimentation and residence times in the two basins are examined after particles having been released from a number of prescribed point sources. In the two final studies the transport-modelling framework is applied within a marine-ecology context and the transported entities are larvae of some Scandinavian sessile and sedentary species and non-commercial fishes (e.g. the bay barnacle, the blue mussel, the shore crab and the gobies). The effects of depth distribution of dispersing larvae on the efficiency of the Marine Protected Areas in the Baltic Sea are examined. Further, the diversity in dispersal and connectivity depending on vertical behaviour is modelled for regions with different tidal regimes in the North Sea, the Skagerrak and the Kattegat. The spatial scales dealt with in the studies varied from global to a highly resolved 182-metres grid. The model results, excepting those from the global study, are based on or compared with in situ-data. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Submitted.
