Magic labelings of directed graphs

Barone, Chedomir Angelo 26 April 2008 (has links)
Let G be a directed graph with a total labeling. The additive arc-weight of an arc xy is the sum of the label on xy and the label on y. The additive directed vertex-weight of a vertex x is the sum of the label on x and the labels on all arcs with head at x. The graph is additive arc magic if all additive arc-weights are equal, and is additive directed vertex magic if all vertex-weights are equal. We provide a complete characterization of all graphs which permit an additive arc magic labeling. A complete characterization of all regular graphs which may be oriented to permit an additive directed vertex magic labeling is provided. The definition of the subtractive arc-weight of an arc xy is proposed, and a correspondence between graceful labelings and subtractive arc magic labelings is shown.

This dissertation intends to conduct an analysis of the female representation in Angela Carter’s novel The Magic Toyshop (1967), observing its relation with the elements present in the book. Considering the importance of this representation in the writer’s works, this dissertation aims to elucidate how the construction of female characters and the setting (since it will also contribute to the representation of these characters) of the referred narrative is done. The information obtained have the intention of clarifying certain aspects, such as the the dialogue between the author’s style, frequently associated with fantasy literature and post-modernism, and the ideology present in the novel: the critique of the patriarchal model of society, which often imposed stereotypes and social roles for women. Thus, at the same time that her work approaches the fantastic features, Angela Carter doesn’t dissociate her writing of the social context, creating an unique style of writing. One notices that, like her characters, the author seeks, through subversion, her own space in Literature

In this way, we elected the Völsunga saga as a platform for apprehension of the Norse pre-Christian religious phenomenon essential aspects, since it presents elements such as: magic, belief in a inevitability of fate, constancy of premonitory dreams and the intervention of the mythical figure of Óðinn in its composition. As inherent to mythological construction, we identify the Hero aspect as fundamental component of this Scandinavian oral tradition.

Porous borders : the amorphous nature of magical realist fiction in Asia and Australasia

Holgate, Ben January 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to broaden the scope of magical realism by examining contemporary fiction in Asia and Australasia, regions which have been largely neglected in critical discussion of the narrative mode. My research seeks to modify and expand our collective conception of magical realism through key texts that challenge not only how we read the narrative mode, but also our expectations of it. My analysis involves a dual intervention in the fields of postcolonial studies and world literature. I supplement existing scholarship of magical realism with new paradigms of critical thought, such as epistemology, mythopoeia, ecocriticism, intertextuality and discourse on human rights. Each of the key authors - Indigenous Australian Alexis Wright, New Zealand Maoris Keri Hulme and Witi Ihimaera, Indian-born cosmopolitans Amitav Ghosh and Salman Rushdie, and Chinese Nobel laureate Mo Yan - subjects the narrative mode to differing intellectual, socio-cultural and historical frameworks, and in the process reinvents magical realism to serve their own artistic purposes. The authors' key texts demonstrate the need to recalibrate theory on magical realism in contexts such as Alexis Wright's depiction of ongoing colonisation of Australia's first inhabitants in a supposedly postcolonial country, and Mo Yan's critique of post-communist China. I argue that magical realism has porous borders, not only geographically and culturally, but also in the sense that the narrative mode frequently spills over into other, different generic kinds such that the distinctions between them are often blurred. In addition, magical realism's constant state of transformation makes it particularly difficult to define. Therefore, I propose a minimalist definition of the narrative mode and a flexible approach. However, underlying cultural elements and individual artistic expression in a text may sometimes limit magical realism's utility as a tool for literary analysis. Finally, I explore the notion of a genealogy of magical realism based on polygenesis, emerging in different cultures at different times.

Luciano, Kelli Mesquita. January 2017 (has links)
In addition, the two narratives present indications of figures of the official history as well as the indication of Historical Institutions. It is important to note that in the two novels, there are unusual events that refer to magical realism, in Il barone rampante, the protagonist Cosimo lives an unusual lifestyle on the trees, where he studies, has altruistic attitudes and believes in revolutionary ideas, while in El Siglo de las Luces, the protagonist is Víctor Hugues who was inspired by an official history figure, a french who was a merchant and responsible for spreading the revolutionary ideology in the Antilles region. His arrival in Havana actively moves the lives of the cousins Esteban, Carlos and Sofía, who begin to nurture interests for the Revolution, do various studies and readings of philosophical authors and are shaped by rationalist thinking. In the Carpentian novel, Esteban is cured of asthma thanks to ritual healers, factor that can be associated with magical realism. At other times, we tried to evidence some fabulous aspects in Il barone rampante and the Latin American baroque in El Siglo de las Luces. ... Materialized Views over Heterogeneous Structured Data Sources in a Distributed Event Stream Processing Environment

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Data-driven applications are becoming increasingly complex with support for processing events and data streams in a loosely-coupled distributed environment, providing integrated access to heterogeneous data sources such as relational databases and XML documents. This dissertation explores the use of materialized views over structured heterogeneous data sources to support multiple query optimization in a distributed event stream processing framework that supports such applications involving various query expressions for detecting events, monitoring conditions, handling data streams, and querying data. Materialized views store the results of the computed view so that subsequent access to the view retrieves the materialized results, avoiding the cost of recomputing the entire view from base data sources. Using a service-based metadata repository that provides metadata level access to the various language components in the system, a heuristics-based algorithm detects the common subexpressions from the queries represented in a mixed multigraph model over relational and structured XML data sources. These common subexpressions can be relational, XML or a hybrid join over the heterogeneous data sources. This research examines the challenges in the definition and materialization of views when the heterogeneous data sources are retained in their native format, instead of converting the data to a common model. LINQ serves as the materialized view definition language for creating the view definitions. An algorithm is introduced that uses LINQ to create a data structure for the persistence of these hybrid views. Any changes to base data sources used to materialize views are captured and mapped to a delta structure. The deltas are then streamed within the framework for use in the incremental update of the materialized view. Algorithms are presented that use the magic sets query optimization approach to both efficiently materialize the views and to propagate the relevant changes to the views for incremental maintenance. Using representative scenarios over structured heterogeneous data sources, an evaluation of the framework demonstrates an improvement in performance. Thus, defining the LINQ-based materialized views over heterogeneous structured data sources using the detected common subexpressions and incrementally maintaining the views by using magic sets enhances the efficiency of the distributed event stream processing environment. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Computer Science 2011

There will be an exegetical study of the biblical pericope 2:8-3:4 of the letter as well as a historical analysis specifically the term stoicei/a. The study of this expression is important to be able to understand the Colossians philosophy mentioned in Cl 2:8. The Christian church in the city of Colossae, is part of a syncretic religious social context. This syncretism is clearly seen in magic texts as the Greek Magical Papyri, very common in Minor Asia region, where the Colossian church was situated. Religious syncretism, involving Jewish and pagan beliefs, reflects the basis of this philosophy. The author of the letter to the Colossians refutes the belief in "elements of the world" and the subservience to them. Among other beliefs, it was believed that these "elements" could influence events on land and the fate of people. Issues involving ascetic practices, worship of angels and observance of the liturgical calendar, give the contours of this philosophy. The writer emphasizes the Lordship of Christ and his works in favor of Colossian Christians, who gave them a good destination. Moreover, the Colossian Christians are guaranteed a freedom that could not be curtailed by any other religious beliefs. So the works of Christ and his lordship are the main arguments used by the author of the letter, in order to say to Christians in Colossae that they no longer need to fear their fate and to submit to the "elements of the world".

To do that we will highlight the character introduced at chapter 8 from the Apostle´s Acts and will take a look at him, above all from the Apocryphal Acts of Peter due to the fact that this texts offers a more comprehensive picture about Simon, his spells and his duels with Peter. For this, we will use as a method, the Carlo Ginsburg´s indoctrination paradigm. With the aim of proposing clarification on the subject, this research is divided in three parts: in the first moment, we will work on the historical aspects of magic, and their sociological and anthropological concepts. In the second moment, we will discuss the presence of magic in the Greco-Roman world and and it´s practices among the Early Christians. Lastly, in the third and final moment, we will present our research on Simon within Early Christian Literature and historiography. However, we will focus in analysis in the Acts Apocryphal of Peter. Our intent is to show a new image from Simon. Not of a simple magician, but the image of a threatening leader of Christian hierarchical structures who has public acclaimed and used it to present himself as a new proposal for the Christian Community. We intend with this research to contribute with, a new perspective on the character Simon who is as important for Christian historiography as the other apostles.
