Alvarez / Resumo: A literatura de Murilo Rubião, introdutora do insólito no Brasil, abriga temas essenciais para a compreensão da modernidade brasileira do século XX. Analisar o sobrenatural em sua obra implica ainda examinar temas referentes à condição humana, que envolvem necessariamente a relação texto/contexto e também observar como isso é veiculado na narrativa em termos de representação. Tendo como pressuposto o relevante papel do escritor no seu contexto social e a importância da criação literária quando considerada a partir de certas necessidades de representação do mundo, nosso intuito com a pesquisa é problematizar a construção formal do insólito na ficção do autor, utilizando as acepções do neofantástico, realismo mágico e do absurdo, na direção de um diálogo entre os gêneros. Desta forma, a pesquisa tem por finalidade a análise da estruturação dos elementos insólitos como mecanismo de representação simbólica do homem moderno, em seis contos do autor, observando as especificidades do contexto histórico em que se situam as narrativas. A saber, os contos selecionados para a análise são: "O ex-mágico da Taberna Minhota", "O pirotécnico Zacarias", "Teleco, o coelhinho", "Os dragões", "O edifício" e "A cidade". O embasamento teórico para o trabalho é composto de ensaios críticos sobre o autor como os de Arrigucci Jr, Jorge Schwartz, Nelly Novaes Coelho, José Paulo Paes, entre outros. Também fazem parte do embasamento, estudos sobre o fantástico, o neofantástico, o realismo mágico e o absurdo, como os de Tzvetan Todorov, Jean Paul Sartre, Jaime Alazraki, David Roas, William Spindler e Martin Esslin. Além disso, são utilizadas proposições teóricas sobre as categorias da narrativa como as de Gérard Genette / Abstract: Murilo Rubião's literature, pioneer of the uncommon in Brazil, contain essential themes for understanding the Brazilian modernity of the twentieth century. Analyzing the supernatural in his work also involves examining issues related to the human condition, which necessarily involve the relationship text / context and also observe how it is conveyed in the narrative in terms of representation. Assuming the relevant role of the writer in his social context and the importance of literary creation when seen from certain requirements of representing the world, our aim with the study is to discuss the construction of the formal neofantastic, magical realism and absurd in the author fiction, toward a dialogue between genres. Thus, the research main objective is to analyze the structure of the uncommon elements as mechanisms for symbolic representation of the modern man, in six tales of the author, observing the specificities of the modern context in which the narratives are situated. Namely, the stories selected for analysis are: "O ex-mágico da Taberna Minhota", "O pirotécnico Zacarias", "Teleco, o coelhinho", "Os dragões", "O edifício" e "A cidade". The theoretical basis for the work is composed of critical essays about the author such as Arrigucci Jr, Jorge Schwartz, Nelly Novaes Coelho, José Paulo Paes, among others. Also, part of the fantastic, magical realism and absurd's studies, such as Tzvetan Todorov, Jean Paul Sartre, Jaime Alazraki, David Roas, William Spindler and Martin Esslin. This dissertation provides a detailed exploration of my creative process in the development and writing of my original young adult historical novel. Using excerpts from my narrative, I explore elements of craft, giving particular attention to the mining of ideas, the three-act structure, character development, chapter arcs and plot points. These features are discussed in relation to the ways in which they engage the adolescent and enrich the reading experience. Magical realism is investigated with regard to how it is incorporated into my narrative. This writing also includes an overview of how historical fiction is relevant for the modern reader. I outline my classroom strategies for encouraging students to appreciate young adult literature and generate their own creative writing in this genre.

This collection of short stories studies the elements of genre fiction and applies them to literary fiction. Science fiction, fantasy, and horror have specific manners in which they speak to an audience. By using these elements, for example the desensitization of the current generation of readers to most horrors, an author can demonstrate the core of the human relationship to pain, faith, or hope. Though some genre fiction seems to fit certain formulas, there are also horror or science fiction stories which do not fit a conventional mold. This collection sets forth to break away from genre fiction conventions. Also, this project utilizes the genre of magical realism, which is the medium between genre fiction and literary fiction, by using fantastic events within a mundane setting to emphasize the author's ideas. By bridging the gap between genres, magical realism reveals how interrelated the elements of all genres are. In this study stories use magical and horrifying events while maintaining an intention beyond the formulaic thrill. Therefore, genre fiction can have a place amongst literature. / Department of English

The realm of fantasy literature has always been that of the 'invisible', in as much as it has either been 'excluded' from traditional academic circles or at most marginalised from the general body of literary texts and considered a literature of 'escape'. This positioning of fantasy literature has caused a definition of the genre that is two-dimensional, and that perpetuates its alienation from the 'canon'. Although the works of fantasy literature by J.R.R. Tolkien are sometimes considered 'worthy' literature, but he is an exception in literary circles. In light of the 'invisible' position that fantasy literature occupies, this thesis attempts, through the use of Derridian and Jungian theory to (re)define fantasy literature by proposing a definition of fantasy literature that is three¬dimensional and that stems precisely from its 'invisible' position. The 'spherical' theory proposed illustrates how fantasy literature allows the reader to (re)examine his/her reality by presenting him/her with a reality that is different to his/her everyday concrete reality, but that at the same time shares the same moral, ethical and identity issues found in the 'visible' world and that the reader is faced with on a daily basis. The prolific use of magic in fantasy cannot be ignored and in this thesis, the use of magic within the texts and its function in a scientifi-rational world is focused on in detail. With each text, a different kind of magic is focused on. In Tolkien, the focus is on Alchemy and how the characters in his novels undergo an Alchemical transformation. The Tolkien texts that are focussed on are The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The chapter on Patricia McKillip focuses primarily on the use of magic in her protagonist's search for identity. The texts used form part of her Riddle Master trilogy and are, The Riddle Master of Hed, Heir of Sea and Fire and Harpist in the Wind. The section on Katherine Kerr explores the idea of a 'new' magic for a 'new' world and focuses on how in the three novels, The Red Wyvern, The Black Raven and The Fire Dragon, magic takes on a 'new' definition. / Dissertation (MA (English))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / English / unrestricted

This study examines pedagogical patterns associated with wizard, witch, and fairy archetypes in fantasy literature. The fact that magic exists in fantasy literature as a mysterious and elusive element allows narratives to maintain and validate various means of knowledge acquisition – one archetypal form, such as a wizard, pursues a radically different mode of pedagogical engagement with magic than another archetypal form, such as a fairy. According to Carl Jung, archetypes are anchored by ancient elements of mythological lore, yet continuously shape-shift in the present day. My qualitative research process involved close readings of selected passages in popular works of fantasy literature, selected for analysis based on their salient educational themes as well as a presence of witches, wizards, and fairies. I examine how archetypes in fantasy literature frame various approaches to education, investigating whether these pedagogical multiplicities tend to re-codify magic itself. I investigate how these archetypes acquire, dispel, manipulate, and embody magic with opposing or unique tactics, while considering how each archetype confronts the unknown. I also reflect on the relevant folkloric and mythic dimensions of each archetype, examining the extent in which the magical discourse surrounding each archetype relates to ideas about teaching and learning. Each archetype presents pedagogic nuances, subtle parallels, layers, and metaphorical veins of meaning. How does education in fantasy literature establish broad and vexing challenges to the realities that we are familiar with or conscious of in the everyday contemporary educational field? Are there idiosyncratic pedagogical possibilities (and impossibilities) through archetypal representations in fantasy literature, allowing for multifaceted and meaningful representations of teaching and learning? I find that each archetype’s distinct pedagogical model includes variations as well as overlapping representations of creative agency, amplified possibilities, enhanced notions of growth, radical receptivity, calls for empathy, and visions of transformation. After examining each archetype in consecutive chapters, my conclusion summarizes the prismatic meaning of their pedagogical engagements, while reflecting on the implications and cross-pollination of education and magic. The intersection of praxis and knowledge for each archetype induces a mythopoeic imagination in relation to education, as each reconciles and renews significant transformational elements of pedagogy.
