Espectroscopia de Ressonância Paramagnética Eletrônica de onda contínua e pulsada em poli(o-metoxianilina) / Pulse and continous wave Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy applied to poly(o-metoxyaniline)

Ronny Rocha Ribeiro 18 April 2002 (has links)
Continuous wave (CW) and pulsed Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) techniques are used to study structural and dynarnical properties of poly(o-metoxyaniline) (POMA) doped in trifluoroacetic (TFA) solution. The observed EPR spectrum is attributed to chain unpaired electron spins named polarons. Since polarons carry both charge and spin, EPR studies can provide information about charge transport properties of the material on a microscopic scale. The width of the EPR signal reflects the interaction of the polarons with their environments. In the present study, special attention is given to the EPR linewidth, which is usually broadened by the presence of molecular oxygen, O2, (S=1). The oxygen induced linewidth is explained by the mutual spin flips occurring during the collision of a mobile polaron with fixed paramagnetic O2. The temperature dependence of the linewidth shows a maximum around 190K associated with these collision processes. Such effects are studied as a function of doping concentration, sample aging and vacuum conditions. From a theoretical model proposed in the field, some parameters, associated with the polaron mobility and exchange interaction between polaron and oxygen, are estimated. All synthesized samples have very short spin relaxation times in all the studied temperature range (2-280K), making impossible their observation by the pulsed EPR techniques. Aged samples show a different behavior; their long relaxation times seem to indicate that the substitution of O2 by H2O has promoted the canceling of the broadening effect. Studies are under progress to establish a sample preparation procedure in which the resulting samples are free of molecular oxygen. Aged samples have been used to perform preliminary studies conducted by the pulsed EPR techniques. Spin-echo spectroscopy and relaxation time measurements were interpreted on the basis of the interaction of the polaron with neighboring nuclei, such as 1H, 13C e 14N, which are not resolved in the CW spectra. To better understand the nature of the CW and pulsed EPR spectroscopy, one special chapter will introduce the several techniques, which are commonly employed in our research.

Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dating and Last Glacial Climate Reconstruction from the Lingtai Loess Section, Chinese Loess Plateau / Optisk stimulerad luminescence datering och klimatrekonstruktion av den senaste istiden från Lingtai loessektion, Kinesiska loessplatån

Lagerbäck Adolphi, Emma January 2016 (has links)
High resolution dating of loess on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) has increased the understanding of past monsoon climate but also raised questions regarding dust mass accumulation rate (MAR), the presence of disturbances or gaps in the sediment record, a possible teleconnection between North Atlantic and East Asian monsoon climate, and whether these events are due to climate variability, local settings, or age model uncertainties. This study undertakes a detailed (<20cm sampling resolution) -OSL investigation of the Lingtai section to create an independent age model using linear regression, to reconstruct monsoon climate changes using magnetic susceptibility(MS) and grain size (GS) proxies, as well as to calculate MAR for the site. The data shows that between 44-15 ka climate changes from a period of strong summer monsoon to a strong winter monsoon. GS data show variable trends attributed to changes in dust storm activity and local environmental conditions. MAR data does not correlate with grain size and is different from other loess records on the CLP. Such differences are either due to local variations or age model uncertainties. No clear correlation with Heinrich events or teleconnection with North Atlantic climate is visible in the records over the Last Glacial period, and hiatuses or gaps are not obviously present at this site. It is suggested that using linear regression for continuous age model construction from the luminescence ages comes with uncertainties due to subjective bias when fitting the lines and determining shifts in the data, especially during MAR calculations. Further studies are needed to ascertain optimal methods for creating age models, and to constrain the reasons behind the variability between different sites and loess records on the CLP.

Thermal, electronic and magnetic properties of the strongly correlated CeCu₅-ᵪ Alx ᵪ system

Britz, Douglas 07 June 2012 (has links)
M. Sc. / The substitution series CeCu5−xAlx where x 2 {1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4} was synthesized and characterized via x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope analysis. All the compounds formed single phase in the P6/mmm hexagonal crystal structure, which pushed the solubility limit of Al within this structure from CeCu3Al2 to CeCu2.6Al2.4. The ascast samples were annealed, but the annealing process had no visible effect on the crystalline nature nor on the physical properties of the samples. The electric, magnetic and thermal properties were measured on Quantum Design’s Physical Properties Measurement System and Magnetic Properties Measurement System. The electrical resistivity showed single-ion Kondo scattering at intermediate temperatures with no signs of coherence for x 2 {1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3} CeCu2.6Al2.4 on the other hand showed a weak maximum at 2 K, which was the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering confirmed by other measurements. The magnetoresistance was fitted by the Beth´e ansatz spin-1/2 model and the obtained Kondo temperatures had a maximum at CeCu3Al2, with linear dependencies on Al concentration on either side of this point. The Kondo moments followed an exponential dependence on the Al concentration, but these effective moments were far lower than the free-ion value, due to the Kondo interaction. The thermal conductivity in this series was phonon dominated with the magnitude of the electronic component being inversely proportional to the Kondo temperature, showing the effect that the Kondo scattering mechanism has on the availability of the conduction electrons to participate in heat transport. The magnitude of the peak in the thermoelectric power S(T) was strongly dependent on the Al concentration, having a maximum at CeCu2.8Al2.2. Below the peak there were two temperature dependencies: S(T) / T for x 2 {1.0, 1.5, 2.4} which is metallic and for x 2 {2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3} S(T)/T /−ln(T) which is characteristic of a quantum critical point. The data were also fitted with a phenomenological model and the obtained Kondo temperatures were quantitatively similar to those obtained from the Beth´e ansatz. The heat capacity Cp(T) data confirmed these compounds to be heavy fermions and also showed Cp(T)/T /−ln(T) below 10 K, which is the hallmark for a magnetically tuned quantum critical point. The magnetic susceptibility showed a Curie-Weiss temperature dependence at temperatures above 100 K, with magnetic moments close to the free-ion value, indicating the presence of localized magnetic moments. The low temperature data found (T) /−ln(T) for Al concentrations near CeCu3Al2 and the ordering present in CeCu2.6Al2.4 was suppressed by 0.3 K in going from 0.01 T to 2 T, suggesting that the ground state is antiferromagnetic in this compound.

Uma forte consistência entre as medidas magnéticas, GAXRD e MEV é verificada / Abstract: Direct current magnetron sputtering was used to synthetize Gd/W and Gd/Cr multilayer films, whose magnetic properties were investigated as a function of the Gd layer thickness, dGd, and the substrate temperature, TS, during deposition. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed, respectively, to detect possible oxygen contamination and to check the continuity of the coverage of the Gd layers on top of those of W and Cr. Grazing angle X-ray diffraction (GAXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the crystalline structure and the morphology of the samples. The GAXRD analyses have shown that in the Gd/W samples the Gd layers are amorphous. In the Gd/Cr samples, however, Gd is crystalline. In these samples, the Gd crystalline order increases with increasing TS and dGd. From the SEM analysis, it was found that the Gd layers in either Gd/W or Gd/Cr samples were granular. To investigate the magnetic properties of the films, SQUID and PPMS magnetometries were used. With the former technique, the magnetic moments of the samples were measured as a function of a dc magnetic field, Hdc, and temperature, T. By PPMS, alternating magnetic fields, superimposed by different Hdc fields were used. The moments were measured as a function of T, Hdc and the frequency of the alternating field. The complex magnetic nature of the films with dGd = 10 nm was observed from the M x H isotherms, which did not show, for most of the samples, saturation even at high magnetic films and low temperatures. From the magnetic data as a function of temperature, it was observed that ferromagnetic character of the samples is enhanced as dGd and TS were increased. The Curie temperature, TC, also depends on TS and dGd as it increases from 247 to 297 K as the latter variables are increased. From the M x H isotherms the saturation magnetic moment at 0 K was determined, and it was observed that it depends on TS. The existence of magnetic glass states in samples with dGd = 10 nm was strongly suggested from both magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements as a function of T. For films with dGd = 10 nm, the magnetocaloric effect was investigated by the magnetic entropy change, ?SM, as a function of the temperature for the removal of a 50 kOe field. The ?SM x T plots for the Gd/Cr samples deposited at TS = 300 and 500 ºC exhibited high temperature peaks denoting ferromagnetism. On the other hand, for the Gd/Cr sample deposited at 30 ºC and for the all the Gd/W samples, such peaks were not seen, indicating the absence, or low-content, ferromagnetic phase. All magnetic measurements are consistent in indicating multiple magnetic phases in the samples and magnetic transition temperatures. A strong consistency among the magnetic and the GAXRD and SEM observations was also verified / Doutorado / Física da Matéria Condensada / Doutora em Ciências

Testování vybraných metod ke zpřesnění stratigrafie králodvorského souvrství / Tests of selected methods leading to precise stratigraphy of the Králův Dvůr Formation

Bartošová, Jarmila January 2010 (has links)
A model study about the precise stratigraphy of the Kralodvorian Formation was made on the drill core from Ořech near Prague. The exposure at Levín was used as a reference section. Both sections were sedimentologicaly studied and described in detail. The study of thin sections was a supplemented for exact description of the rocks and lithotypes. Chemostratigraphic methods (?13C and TOC) and method of the rock magnetic susceptibility were used for detailed stratigraphic analyse. All the mentioned methods of both sections. Samples for the measurements of the magnetic susceptibility were taken by 0.5 m of thickness. The measurement of ?13C and TOC was taken from the non-wheathered 80 m of the drill core Ořech and from the upper 20 m Králův Dvůr Formation at Levín profile by 2 m. The available data show that Ořech represents low and middle part of the Kralodvorian strata and that all studied thickness (80 m) belongs to only positive excursion of ?13C. This excursion is interpreted to be the upper Katian. It gives an evidence that sedimentation of the Kralův Dvůr Formation was very fast. Identification and interpretation of this excursion makes possible the accurate interregional corelation of the strata. A precise regional stratigraphic subdivision is based on inhomogenities caused by different materials or...

Mechanismy vmístění a magnetické stavby žil syenitových porfyrů (západní části Moldanubika) / Emplacement and magnetic fabrics in dikes of syenite porphyries (Western Moldanubian Zone)

Orságová, Lucie January 2010 (has links)
ENGLISH ABSTRACT We present new results of structural and magnetic (AMS) analyses of selected dikes of melasyenite, quartz melasyenite to melagranite porphyries accompanied by lamprophyres (minettes). The studied dike from the locality Nihošovice were dated by U-Pb method on zircons at 338 Ma. The asymmetric structural pattern of the studied dikes gives an excellent evidence for their emplacement and orientation of magmatic flow. The studied dikes were emplaced into: (i) Prevailing parts of the Central Bohemian Plutonic Complex (locality Malčice) and (ii) host high-grade metamorphic rocks of western part of the Moldanubian Zone (locality Nihošovice). Despite of the extensive area of occurrence, compositional variations and age of emplacement of these dikes are relatively narrow. Their geochemical and petrological compositions broadly correspond to ultrapotassic plutonic rocks (durbachites). The dikes are steeply dipping in trend ~NNW-SSE to ~W-E, with range in width between ~20 and ~25 meters. In general, our results show: (i) A relatively low degree of magnetic anisotropy (P= 1.012 - 1.152); (ii) Mostly oblate (planar) fabric, especially in marginal parts of the intrusive bodies (T= -0.091 - 0.941); (iii) Evidence for subhorizontal magmatic flow trajectory defined for a newtonian magma with typical...

On the incorporation of iron into hexagonal barium titanate: II. Magnetic moment, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical transmission

Langhammer, H.T., Walther, T., Böttcher, Rolf, Ebbinghaus, S.G. 27 April 2023 (has links)
Systematic measurements of the magnetic moment in dependence on temperature and magnetic field of hexagonal 6H-BaTiO3 + 0.04 BaO + x/2 Fe 2 O 3 (0.005 x 0.05) ceramics were performed to study the influence of Fe ions on the magnetic properties. While the samples show Curie–Weiss paramagnetism for Fe concentrations 1.0 mol%, antiferromagnetic interactions become manifest for 2.0 and 5.0 mol% iron. With increasing Fe content the antiferromagnetic interaction, which is assumed to be caused by a superexchange mechanism Fe 3+ Ti(1) − O 2− O(2) − Fe3+ Ti(2) , becomes stronger. At external magnetic fields smaller than 1 T a further, ferromagnetic interaction between Fe 3+ ions is detected below 200 K. The interactions between Fe 3+ ions in the samples with 2.0 and 5.0 mol% iron are also manifest in the EPR spectra by numerous lines with low intensity. Q-band EPR investigations of 5.0 mol% Fe doped single crystals confirm the existence of only one type of Fe 3+ –V O associates in the samples.

Magnetic Properties of Transition Ion Pyrophosphates

Fowlis, David Colin 12 1900 (has links)
<p> The magnetic properties of MnP2O7, CuP2O7, Co2P2O7 and Ni2P2O7 were studied. They were investigated using magnetic susceptibility and magnetic resonance techniques. They were all found to become magnetically ordered between 10°K and 30°K. In all the predominant exchange interaction was antiferromagnetic. Ni2P2O7 however did show a resultant moment at low temperatures which was attributed to weak ferrornagnetism. The experimental results were analysed in the molecular field approxmation which accounted for their behaviour except in the case of Cu2P2O7 where the High Temperature Series Expansion method was necessary to explain the temperature dependence of its paramagnetic susceptibility. </p> / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Comparison of Magnetic-Susceptibility Models From UAV-borne and Ground Measurements in Enåsen Area, Sweden / Modeller för magnetisk susceptibilitet: en jämförelsestudie med utgångspunkt i mark- och drönarmätningar från Enåsenområdet

Sjödin, Clara January 2022 (has links)
Mapping anomalies in the Earth’s magnetic field is one method used in applied geophysics, for exploring buried structures and objects. Magnetic surveys can be ground-based or made airborne, onboard airplanes, helicopters, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), also known as drones. The measurements in this project were made as part of a mapping project by the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU) in the Enåsen area in Hälsingland, central Sweden. The magnetic data were collected by SGU in the field summer of 2021. The aim of this project is to model the data from UAV-borne surveys and validate them by checking the response with the measure ground-based data collected by SGU and compare several different profiles to investigate the different results from ground-based vs. UAV-borne surveys. Two models from two different UAV flight lines were made using the software Potent, to show anomalies in the magnetic field intensity. The modelling results show a relatively good correlation between the response from the model and ground-based data. However, there are detailed variations in the ground-based data that are not resolved by the UAV data. This is partly because of the height difference and partly different sampling. The magnetic anomalies in the project area were interpreted, with the help of the modelled profiles, as being caused mainly by geological units consisting of metasedimentary rock/migmatite. These units generally dip with 30-50°, some of them containing Cuand Au-mineralizations. The dip, rock type, and magnetic susceptbilities of these units match the field data from SGU relatively well and are also backed up by SGU models of electrical resistivity from the same area.
