This thesis describes the design of a magnetometer for recording geomagnetic micropulsations. The nuclear magnetic resonance phenomenon of hydrogen nuclei in water is utilized in the sensing unit of a feedback system, the feedback current being recorded as a measure of the geomagnetic variation. The thesis establishes the feasibility of a feedback system magnetometer.
The system transfer function is derived and from it the sensitivity, stability, steady state error and dynamic range are determined. The dispersion mode signal of nuclear magnetic resonance obtained experimentally is shown and compared with that predicted theoretically. The advantages of a feedback system are indicated. Dominika Zákutná Abstract The work is focusing on the magnetic properties of ferrimagnetic spinel ferrites before and after the introduction of a shell on a core particle with different magnetic properties. The core nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal decomposition of oleate precursors. The introduction of shell was carried out by hydrothermal treatment of the already prepared core particles. The phase composition, spinel structure and the sizes of the prepared samples were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction and by transmission electron microscopy. Formation of the shell on top of the core particle was determined indirectly, using Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature. The interparticle interactions and the particle shape was studied by small angle X-ray scattering. The magnetic properties of the prepared samples were measured on a SQUID magnetometer. An Improved Data Acquisition System For Contactless Conductivity ImagingColak, Evrim I. 01 April 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The previous data acquisiton system developed for the electrical impedance imaging
via contactless measurements is improved to obtain measurements with a faster
scanning speed of 0.15 sec/mm2. This system uses magnetic excitation to induce
currents inside the body and measures the magnetic fields of the induced currents
with an axial gradiometer. Gradiometer consists of two differentially connected
10000-turn coils with diameter of 30 mm and a transmitter coil of 100-turn coil of
diameter 30 mm placed and magnetically coupled between them. Transmitter coil is
driven by a sinusoidal current of 200 mA (peak) whose frequency is 14.1 kHz. A
Data Acquisition Card (DAcC) is designed and constructed on PCB, thus elliminates
the use of the Lock-In Amplifier Instrument (LIAI) in the phase sensitive
measurements. User interface programs to control the scanning experiments via PC
(MATLAB Scanner 1.0, HP VEE Scanner 1.0) and to analyze the acquired data
(Data Observer 1.0) are prepared. System performance tests for the DAcC are made.
Error in the phase sensitive measurements is measured to be 0.6% of the test signals.
Minimum magnetic field density that can be detected is found to be 7 DT. Output
stage performance of the DAcC is improved by using an integrator instead of an
amplifier in the output stage. In this manner, maximum linearity error is measured as
6.60*10-4 % of the full scale for the integrator circuit. Thermally generated voltage
drift at the sensor output is measured to be 0.5 mV/minute in the ambient
temperature. Overall normalized standard deviation at the output of the data
acquisition system is observed as to be in the order of 10-4. Mathematical relation
between the resistive rings and conductive phantoms is studied. It is derived that
maximum resistor value that can be distinguished in the resistive ring experiment
which is 461 F, corresponds to the phantom conductivity of 2.7 S/m. Field profiles
(i.e., the voltage measurements) for the human left hand is obtained for the first time
in literature, employing the LIAI. Agar objects with conductivity value of 1 S/m in a
saline solution of 0.2 S/m are scanned and the field profiles are obtained using the
DAcC. Image profiles of the scan fit well with the actual locations, geometries, and
relative dimensions of the agar objects. A coil winding machine is prepared which
enables the operator to design and wind up coils under self-controlled environment
and conditions.

Ce travail de thèse porte sur la recherche géophysique de la proche sub-surface appliquée aux objets et structures archéologiques. L'objectif est de définir une méthodologie d'étude géophysique de sites archéologiques dans un contexte Méditerranéen : en France et en Tunisie, ainsi que " l'empreinte géophysique " des principaux objets archéologiques. La méthode géophysique principale utilisée est la méthode magnétique. Les cartographies magnétiques obtenues sont couplées aux cartographies et mesures électromagnétiques et aux tomographies électriques (ERT) et sismiques. Ce volet de prospection sur le terrain est corrélé aux mesures magnétiques de laboratoire, permettant une meilleure contrainte des modélisations directes et synthétiques proposées pour les différents objets étudiés. Dans une première partie, la thèse se concentre sur les structures et objets archéologiques de combustion. Cette partie précise la signature magnétique de ces objets et souligne son rehaussement dû à l'effet du feu. Dans un second temps, la thèse fait porter l'analyse sur l'empreinte géophysiques des structures d'aménagement et sa variation reliée aux différents matériaux et techniques utilisés ainsi qu'aux propriétés du terrain encaissant. D'autres objets sont par la suite étudiés pour une meilleure compréhension des anomalies magnétiques potentiellement produites. La diminution de la qualité du signal magnétique et donc du rapport signal sur bruit est traité vers la fin. / This dissertation deals with the applied geophysics to archaeological objects and structures in the close subsurface. The aims are to define a geophysical methodology for the study of archeological sites in a Mediterranean context : in France and in Tunisia, and also the geophysical signature of the main archaeological features. The main geophysical method used is the magnetic method. The obtained magnetic mappings are coupled with the electromagnetic cartographies and measurements, and with the electrical tomographies (ERT) and the seismic surveys. This ground prospecting is correlated with the magnetic measurements of laboratory, allowing a better constraint of the forward and synthetic modelling, proposed for the various studied features. First, the thesis concentrates on the study of the archaeological structures of combustion. This part specifies the magnetic signature of these objects and underlines the raising owed to the effect of the fire. Secondly, this work analyzes the geophysical imprint of the building structures and its variation connected with the various materials and techniques used as well as the surrounding ground properties. Other objects are afterward studied for a better understanding of the potentially produced magnetic anomalies. Last but not least, the decrease of the quality of the magnetic signal and thus the signal-to-noise ratio, is handled.

This thesis deals with the analysis of magnetic losses in electrical machines and the possibilities of their measurement. Magnetically soft and hard materials are very prone to changing magnetic properties. They can be changed simply by changing the temperature of the material or different stresses induced in the material, resulting in different results. These changes are important to keep in mind when an electric machine is being designed. The original parameters of the affected materials can be restored by annealing or grinding. These methods release the induced stresses within the material. Due to these effects, it is also important to know how to measure magnetic parameters. Each way has its own specifics and has a certain error of the measurement. When the machines for higher efficiency, rpm or higher temperatures are designed, it is advisable to know how their magnetic properties changed. This thesis deals with the properties of different materials, their measurements and finally simulation of the chosen electric machine with the application of the measured results.

This work is designed to process and evaluate implemented within experimental research into the influence of low-level magnetic fields in the Earth's resonator psychophysiological parameters of human organism and its behavior and decision-making. The work confirmed the influence of low-level magnetic fields on the psychophysiological parameters of the organism to be simultaneously confirmed the hypothesis established in accordance with the objectives of work.

Magnetic Moment Characterization for Small SatellitesSans Monguiló, Alejandro January 2021 (has links)
Small satellites are gaining popularity in a wide range of applications where attitude systems require high precision performance. One of the main sources of errors, in case of magnetic attitude control systems, is the residual magnetic moment (RMM) of the spacecraft. To keep the RMM low and stable, mitigation methods shall be applied based on the satellite’s magnetic dipole moment (MDM) characterization, which shall be measured accurately. For small satellites, the most common technique involves the generation of a field-free region for the magnetic measurements using a test bed. The test bed measurement setup is normally mechanical, where measurements from the device under test (DUT) are very tedious. Optical magnetic test beds (OMTB) are being developed for MDM characterization providing simpler set ups and faster measurements than mechanical test beds. In this work, accuracy of OMTB of Aalto University has been evaluated by measuring three permanent magnets in two configurations. The measurements show a relationship between the estimation accuracy and the DUT’s marker area seen by the camera. Moreover, it was observed that the field-free region generated by Helmholtz coil cage can generate false data points. Based on these observations, the detection of the marker’s positions have been evaluated using the view area (VA) and the pointing angle (PA). The analysis shows that there is a consistent pattern depending on the combination of the VA and PA. Hence, the method of data acquisition was improved in order to prioritize the markers which position allow better accuracy. The achieved improvement of MDM estimation results is 2 %, and the test bed’s overall error evaluated is a 13 % in MDM position estimation and 23 % in MDM magnitude estimation. The improved OMTB was used to characterize the MDM of four magnetic attitude coils of Foresail-1 satellite. The measurements results are consistent with design parameters, showing three dipole configuration in all coils with a MDM magnitude order of 10−2 A·m2. / Foresail-1
