Ce travail repose sur une analyse comparative de la pratique institutionnalisée des relations à plaisanterie dans deux populations de la Casamance (Sénégal) – les Mandinka et les Joola. Malgré leur proximité géographique, chacune de ces populations se distingue très fortement du point de vue de son organisation sociale et de ses pratiques rituelles et religieuses. Toutefois, les uns et les autres ont développé des modes particuliers de relations à plaisanterie, et ce, à plusieurs niveaux. Différents types de relations à plaisanterie ont été repérées et décrites : entre parents, clans, unités locales, groupes ethniques... Inégalement documentées dans la littérature existante, certaines sont communes aux deux sociétés, d'autres n'existent que dans une seule. À partir d'une ethnographie la plus fine possible de leur contexte et de leurs expressions, nous avons tenté de dégager les emprunts ou inter-influences entre ces différents modes, mais aussi de comprendre ce qu'ils révèlent dans chaque cas, de la manière dont sont pensées et aménagées les relations entre catégories sociales tout à la fois rivales et complémentaires. Nous avons mis l'accent sur le fait que, surgissant dans des « nœuds » de tension déterminés tout à la fois par l'organisation sociale et familiale et des éléments d’ordre symbolique et religieux, l'étude des relations à plaisanterie ne peut en être dissociée. / This work is a comparative analysis of the institutionalized practice of joking relationships amongst two populations—the Mandinka and Joola—of Casamance, Senegal. Despite their geographical proximity, each of these populations is very distinct in terms of social organization as well as ritual and religious practices. Nonetheless, both have developed particular forms of joking relationships that overlap at different levels. Different types of joking relationships are identified and described: between relatives, clans, local units, ethnic groups. Unequally documented in the existing literature, some are common to both groups, while others exist in only one. Starting from an in-depth ethnographic study of the context and relevant expressions, we have attempted both to identify borrowings and mutual influence between the two groups, and to understand what they reveal about the way that relations are construed and arranged between social categories that are rival yet complimentary. This work stresses that the study of joking relationships cannot be dissociated from the social and family organization as well as symbolic and religious elements which determine the "knots" of tension where these relationships arise.

"But then I realize that it´s just, a more different culture, same people” : - En studie om förändring av musikaliska förhållningssätt genom mötet med Sverige

Studiens syfte är att ta reda på hur och varför människors förhållningssätt till musik kan förändras vid det jag valt att kalla ”kontextbyten”. Kontextbyte avser när en person flyttar från den kulturella och sociala plats personen är uppvuxen på till Sverige. Empirin bygger på fyra kvalitativa intervjuer med personer som är uppväxta i Sovjetunionen/Ukraina, Mandinka/Senegal, Japan och Jamaica och nu bosatta i Sverige. De är alla på något sätt musicerande. För att uppfylla syftet undersöks informanternas förhållningssätt till musik i deras respektive hemland och Sverige. Dessa jämförs med varandra och utifrån ett kulturanalytiskt perspektiv, för att upptäcka eventuella förändringar sedan de anlänt till Sverige. Metoden för insamlandet av empirin är kvalitativ intervju. De teoretiska perspektiven är kulturanalys och delar av Pierre Bourdieus begreppsapparat. Resultatet visar inledningsvis att informanterna har relativt liknande bakgrunder. Några teman som framkommer är t.ex. att föräldrar varit inblandade i musikintresset, disciplin kring musiken, musikgenrer används som distinktion och att musik kan utövas seriöst eller oseriöst. I Sverige synliggörs både individuella och gemensamma förändringar. Två huvudteman uppstår där de två männen är negativa och de två kvinnorna är positiva till upplevelsen av den svenska musikkulturen. Detta visar förändrade förhållningssätt. Bourdieus begrepp appliceras sedan på resultatet för att förklara de förändrade förhållningssätten till musik.

The Challenge of News Translation from English into Mandinka in Gambia: Colonial Legacies of Translation Processes and Practices

Understanding the process and the dynamics involved in news translation, as well as the challenges news translators face in my country of origin - The Gambia- has been a long-held goal, considering my background and experience as a former bilingual editor for Kuwait Oil Company and a senior news translator for Al-Watan Daily in Kuwait. The quest to unravel the enigmas surrounding news translation practices has always been a subject of great interest to me. With the intent of proffering pragmatic solutions to the attendant challenges of news translation in the Gambia, my focus is on providing well-researched recommendations. The study specifically seeks to answer questions regarding news translation processes and practices and how they have evolved over time in the Gambia. Furthermore, this study sheds light on the manifold professional and technical obstacles that confront news translators in the Gambia as they endeavour to render news content originally produced in English into Mandinka, which is one of the prominent Indigenous languages. It also delves into the broader linguistic landscape in the Gambia and other colonized territories from an indigenous perspective. Colonialism looms large over my study, considering the fact that news is translated from English, a minority colonial language imposed on the majority speakers of indigenous languages. The legacy of colonialism still lingers, with the news still being read in English first before it gets rendered in indigenous languages. Using qualitative methodology, my research explores the evolution and importance of news translation in the Gambia and the underlying factors behind the professional and technical challenges that Gambia’s news translators continue to wrestle with. Dowling, Lloyd, and Suchet-Pearson (2016) posit that this methodology is employed to comprehend the spatialities, interpretations, and experiences of social life. The undertaken field study has availed me of the opportunity to have a deeper understanding of some of those challenges and come up with recommendations that might hopefully address them, including language planning, the development of a monolingual Mandinka dictionary, translator training, the development of unique Mandinka writing systems, among others. My research participants were enthused to participate in the study, affirming that it was the first time ever a researcher approached them to have an idea about the dynamics of their work and include their findings in a thesis—an assertion that sustained the momentum throughout the journey.
