Face recognition enhancement through the use of depth maps and deep learningSaleh, Yaser January 2017 (has links)
Face recognition, although being a popular area of research for over a decade has still many open research challenges. Some of these challenges include the recognition of poorly illuminated faces, recognition under pose variations and also the challenge of capturing sufficient training data to enable recognition under pose/viewpoint changes. With the appearance of cheap and effective multimodal image capture hardware, such as the Microsoft Kinect device, new possibilities of research have been uncovered. One opportunity is to explore the potential use of the depth maps generated by the Kinect as an additional data source to recognize human faces under low levels of scene illumination, and to generate new images through creating a 3D model using the depth maps and visible-spectrum/RGB images that can then be used to enhance face recognition accuracy by improving the training phase of a classification task. With the goal of enhancing face recognition, this research first investigated how depth maps, since not affected by illumination, can improve face recognition, if algorithms traditionally used in face recognition were used. To this effect a number of popular benchmark face recognition algorithms are tested. It is proved that algorithms based on LBP and Eigenfaces are able to provide high level of accuracy in face recognition due to the significantly high resolution of the depth map images generated by the latest version of the Kinect device. To complement this work a novel algorithm named the Dense Feature Detector is presented and is proven to be effective in face recognition using depth map images, in particular under wellilluminated conditions. Another technique that was presented for the goal of enhancing face recognition is to be able to reconstruct face images in different angles, through the use of the data of one frontal RGB image and the corresponding depth map captured by the Kinect, using faster and effective 3D object reconstruction technique. Using the Overfeat network based on Convolutional Neural Networks for feature extraction and a SVM for classification it is shown that a technically unlimited number of multiple views can be created from the proposed 3D model that consists features of the face if captured real at similar angles. Thus these images can be used as real training images, thus removing the need to capture many examples of a facial image from different viewpoints for the training of the image classifier. Thus the proposed 3D model will save significant amount of time and effort in capturing sufficient training data that is essential in recognition of the human face under variations of pose/viewpoint. The thesis argues that the same approach can also be used as a novel approach to face recognition, which promises significantly high levels of face recognition accuracy base on depth images. Finally following the recent trends in replacing traditional face recognition algorithms with the effective use of deep learning networks, the thesis investigates the use of four popular networks, VGG-16, VGG-19, VGG-S and GoogLeNet in depth maps based face recognition and proposes the effective use of Transfer Learning to enhance the performance of such Deep Learning networks.

LINEARITY VERSUS COMPLETE POSITIVITY OF THE EVOLUTION OF OPEN QUANTUM SYSTEMSCeballos, Russell R. 01 May 2014 (has links)
The title may be a bit misleading. Perhaps, "On the Complete Positivity of Reduced Quantum Dynamics," would be a more fitting title. Determining whether or not completely positive (CP) maps are required to describe open system quantum dynamics is an extremely important issue concerning the fundamental mathematical foundations of QM, as well as many other areas of physics. it had been typically believed that only CP maps actually describe the dynamical evolution of open quantum systems, however there has been speculation as to whether this is a strict constraint on the mathematical and physical structure of stochastic quantum dynamical maps. The objective of this thesis is to demonstrate that given a particular unitary operator, an initial system state, a final system state, and the dimension of the environment state, there exists no CP map with a composite system-environment, product initial state that is compatible with the given constraints on the reduced quantum dynamics of the system under investigation.

Comparing Serif and Sans Serif Typeface Pairings on MapsJanuary 2018 (has links)
abstract: When cartographers and graphic designers create maps they choose typefaces. Often, serif and sans serif typefaces are paired together to represent different information on a map. Typefaces have a communicated tone and choosing the correct typeface combination to send the intended message can be challenging. The purpose of this study was to create an analysis of the aesthetic characteristics of typeface pairings to assist map creators when choosing typefaces. An online survey was utilized to collect responses from graphic designers who have been trained in at least one year or more in design from a higher education institution. There were 30 participants in the study and they scored 24 typeface pairings, 12 differentiating and 12 superfamily, on 48 maps. Scoring was done on eight aesthetic characteristics: friendly, whimsical, cheap, neutral, bland, corporate, serious and modern. The researcher conducted an analysis of each typeface’s microaesthetics and then compared these to the survey’s scored aesthetic characteristics. It was concluded that there are many factors that go into comparing the typeface pairings of serif and sans serif typeface combinations. However, a selection of a superfamily typeface pairing is better than selecting a differentiating pairing. Future research should focus on conducting studies with a varying amount of typeface styles. Also, to include less maps per survey and a survey completion status bar. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Engineering 2018

O processo de aprendizagem da cartografia escolar por meio da situação didática / The learning process of school cartography through a teaching situationWaldiney Gomes de Aguiar 10 May 2013 (has links)
The current thesis has been developed with teachers from Elementary School, 1stcycle of Elementary School, 5º year in public schools of the city of Francisco Beltrao (PR). Trying to contribute with the Geography teaching of Elementary students, it has been developed a survey among the teachers about their teaching methodology toward the students. The main objective has been to observe how they worked when teaching about maps. With this aim, it has been worked on the Simiellisproposal(1994), which is about cartographic literacy. According to her, for a child to demystify the draw, it is necessary to develop some concepts, such as an skewed view, vertical view, three-dimensional and bi-dimensional image, besides to understand the cartographic alphabet (dot, line and area). From this point, the child develops the notion of subtitles, proportion, laterality, reference and orientation, conceiving the maps as a means of communication. To teach all this process, it has been used teaching situation theory suggested by Brousseau(2008), which consists in a model that describes the teacher and student activities from a situation to be solved. It is about a communication instrument between the teacher, environment and student, seeking answers from challenges that lead to the 11 construction of knowledge. In our case, geographical knowledge, because this survey is about learning maps and learning Geography through maps.

Användarvänlig Google Maps-baserad webbeditor för mobilkartspelNilsson, Emilia January 2016 (has links)
