MAGMA GENESIS AND COMPOSITION OF THE SLAB-DERIVED FLUIDS BENEATH THE SE MARIANA INTRAOCEANIC ARC, WESTERN PACIFICRibeiro, Julia 17 April 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Subduction zones are places where one hydrated oceanic plate goes underneath another plate, and releases its fluids into the overlying mantle wedge. Slab-derived fluids play a key role in subduction zone processes. They serpentinize the cold forearc mantle at shallow depths; and deeper, they trigger hydrous mantle melting beneath the arc volcanoes and sometimes at backarc basin (BAB) spreading center. Examining the composition of arc and BAB magmas helps understanding genesis of subduction-related magmas, nature and composition of their mantle sources and slab-derived fluids. However, investigating such processes at shallow subduction zones is challenging, because the cold forearc mantle generally does not melt. Here, I investigate an unusual region in the southernmost Mariana convergent margin in the Western Pacific, near the Challenger Deep. The SE Mariana forearc stretched to accommodate opening of the southernmost Mariana Trough ~5Ma ago, opening the SE Mariana forearc rift (SEMFR) and causing seafloor spreading ~2.7-3.7Ma ago. The subducted slab beneath SEMFR deepens from <50km to ~100km, thus studying SEMFR lavas provides a unique opportunity to understand shallow subduction processes. By examining the major and trace element composition, the Pb-Nd-Sr isotopic ratios and the volatile contents (H2O, CO2, Cl, S, F) of SEMFR basalts, associated glassy rinds and olivine-hosted melt inclusions (Ol-MI) collected during three cruises (YK08-08, YK10-12, TN273), I show that: (i) SEMFR lavas were produced by adiabatic decompression melting of depleted asthenospheric BAB-like mantle at ~30±6.6 km depth and 1224±40oC; (ii) Ol-MI represent hydrous melts trapped by forearc mantle olivines. Xenocrysts were entrained with SEMFR basalts during ascent; (iii) SEMFR mantle flowed from the forearc towards the arc volcanoes and was metasomatized by shallow aqueous fluids; (iv) SEMFR shallow fluids are more aqueous than the fluids released beneath the Mariana arc and Mariana BAB; (v) the aqueous slab-derived fluids and the volatile fluxes are greatest at ~50-100km slab depth, suggesting that the minerals from the subducting plate mostly broke down beneath the arc to release their fluids. Such results provide new insights into shallow subduction processes, as previous studies showed that volatile fluxes and aqueous slab-derived fluids should increase toward the trench.

O enfoque do presente trabalho é a religiosidade. / Localized in rural zone, in medium Parnaíba area, Amarante, Piauí, Brasil, the Mimbó quilombo, was originated about a century ago, by fled slaves of actual district of Oeiras; next rivers Canindé, and Mimbó rivulet. The population is predominantly black with 530 habitants, who live of subsistence agriculture and goats, pigs and chickens raising.. The present work focus is on religiosity. There is in Mimbó a small church for devotion to Our Lady of Healthof - the local pactron – which is worshipped in August, priod of the feasts in her homage, a terreiro where mimboenses practice the Encantaria (Enchant cult), another afro-brasilian religion of Amazonas, Pará, Maranhão and Piauí, whose spiritual entites are organized in families. The Barba Soeira terreiro is dedicated and was founded by Augusto Rabelo da Paixão in the decade of 1970, when he had developed mediunity in master Zé Bruno`s terreiro, a famous wizard and medicine man from Nazaré in the Caxias, Maranhão. The initiates are defined as “horses” of the spirituals entites. In Encantaria de Barba Soeira (Enchant cult) prevails the family of the spiritual entity known as “Légua-Boji-Buá” , leader of Forest Line of the Codó, Maranhão.

This dissertation arose from the investigation of the relationship between journalism and the production of meanings in rural areas in the context of the Mariana Tragedy (2015), more specifically in the community of Bento Rodrigues and other affected localities. In this sense, our main objective with this research is to problematize and examine the participation of journalism in the configuration and expression of the contemporary rural experience, present in the contexts immediately affected by the rupture of the dam of Fundão and Santarém. From this objective
, the research developed to investigate the relationship between journalism, events, temporalities and social life. Later, we examined the expressions and configurations of the rural ways of life in the newspaper A Sirene problematized by the publicly exposed tragedy. Finally, we investigate the configurations of the relationship between rurality, mining and mineiridade present in the cited newspaper. More specifically, we seek to demonstrate how the suffering provoked by tragedy, and shown by journalism, was able to show nuances and traces of the rural contexts affected by the tragedy, in the midst of a contemporaneity marked by significant transformations in rural settings. For this, we start with a bibliographical research about the proposed theme and thus, we analyzed the first 12 editions of the newspaper A Sirene from the approach of textual landscapes and analysis of verb-visual content. In a general way, we perceive that journalism has been shown as a way of experiencing social life and of updating the present, and also, a way of explaining, from narratives, the suffering and way of life of the subjects of the affected regions. Finally, we note that we are talking about hybrid subjects and that, this hybridism emerges with a series of problems in globalized contexts, because it is in these contexts that there is the construction of peripheries that are not seen in front of hegemonic societies.

Characterizing the Evolution of Slab Inputs in the Earliest Stages of Subduction: Preliminary Evidence from the Fluid-Mobile Element (B, Cs, As, Li) Systematics of Izu-Bonin Boninitic Glasses Recovered During IODP Expedition 352Sanatan, Keir Aavon 23 March 2017 (has links)
Fluid-mobile elements (FMEs) such as B, Cs, As, Li and Tl can mobilize readily under low P-T conditions (0.2-0.5 GPa). This makes them effective geochemical tracers that can be used as a way of tracking fluid-rock exchanges at the shallow depths encountered in the earliest stages of subduction.
The Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) subduction system is unique in that it preserves a record of the sequences produced from the onset of subduction through the development of arc magmatism. International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 352 recovered >800m of boninite core material from the earliest IBM magmatic events.
Select boninitic glasses from these IODP 352 cores, found mostly as selvages on the rinds of pillow lavas and as clasts within hyaloclastites, were examined via EPMA and laser ablation ICP-MS techniques. The boninite glasses analyzed were separated into two categories – low-silica boninite (LSB) and high-silica boninites (HSB), based on the bulk chemistry and mineralogy of the lithostratigraphic locations from which the glass samples occur in the drill core. LSB are the earlier erupted boninite series, which show both greater variation in extent of differentiation and reflect less depleted mantle sources than HSB.
Boron concentrations in the Expedition 352 boninite glasses analyzed range from 0.08 to 12.91 ppm, arsenic contents vary from 0.15 to 3.26 ppm, and cesium varies from 0.01 to 0.91 ppm. Lithium concentrations in the boninites range from 1 to 18.35 ppm while Tl concentrations vary from 10 to 155 ppb. FME concentrations trend toward higher values in HSB than in LSB.
Low-Si boninites appear to form via simple mixing of depleted mantle source and an FME enriched fluid endmember, which mobilizes B, As, Cs, (Tl) and Li very early in the subduction process. Coupled with inputs from upwelling mantle, this FME-rich fluid triggers fluid-fluxed boninite melting.
The high-Si boninites reflect the addition of a subduction component with a higher Ba/La ratio than that of the depleted mantle; this higher ratio more closely resembles that of Mariana cherts from altered Pacific crust. Thus, the high-Si boninites are consistent with the fluid-fluxed melting of a highly depleted, harzburgitic mantle source and reflect inputs of two distinguishable slab-derived components, one that is sedimentary in nature and another that is FME-enriched. This model for melting that is more similar to the melting regime of modern arcs and reflects the transition from early extension-related melting into that of a “normal” subduction system.
