Synthèse et études physico-chimiques d’un agglomérat calcomagnésien formé sur acier en milieu marin : un éco-matériau pour la protection du littoral / Synthesis and physico-chemical studies of a calcareous agglomerate formed on steel in marine environment : an eco-material for coastal protection

Zanibellato, Alaric 29 March 2016 (has links)
A new method, based on an innovative adaptation of cathodic protection principle of metal structures in marine environment, is to promote the precipitation of a calcareous agglomerate several centimeters thick. In the presence of sand and shells, this cluster could stabilize coastal areas being eroded or improve anchorage of breakwater riprap. The objective of this work is to study and understand the reaction mechanisms allowing to create a voluminous calcareous deposit away from the cathode and to optimize deposition time as well as its mechanical properties. First, it was shown in this work that the electrolytic medium could affect the growth of the deposit, with a possible inhibition of formation of calcium carbonate fot the low potential. The influence of corrosion products in the cathodic protection mechanism was also highlighted through polarizations performed in NaCl, artificial and natural sea water. Second, one month test with impressed current were conducted from laboratory to natural site, in order to get closer of real conditions. Current density and hydrodynamic conditions are key factors closely bonded to each other, affecting the mass and composition of the Ca/Mg ratio. This work has also helped to highlight the influence of the polarization time on the composition, with stable growth kinetics but a composition’s evolution after 15, 30 and 60 days. This internal variation of the Ca/Mg ratio attributed to a process of « dissolution/precipitation » is pH dependent and the distribution of these elements within the deposit could play a major role in the evolution of the mechanical strength of deposit over time.

In this PHD thesis, it was studied shallow water storm deposits developed in an intertidal area (Lagarto and Palmares formations) and storm deposits developed below the fair water wave base in an prodelta area (Punta Negra Formation). Lagarto and Palmares formations have been developed in an open coast tidal flat where the tidal and storm sedimentary processes have interacted to distribute sediments from the coast till the shoreface. Detailed facies analysis was used to recognize and characterize the lithofacies and architectural elements, define a depositional model e the controlling factors that preserved HCS in shallow-water. Based in the depositional architectural organisation, it was proposed a sedimentary distribution model in which there is a gradational transition between the proximal areas of upper intertidal, dominated by tidal processes and silty and shaly sediments, and the distal areas of lower intertidal, in which prevails sandy sediments and storm deposits. Punta Negra Formation constitutes a thick unit composed of monotonous interbeds of sandstone and sandy mudstone. This unit was previously interpreted as a deep water depositional system, however in this research it was reinterpreted as a storm dominated prodeltaic system. Detailed analysis of the sedimentary deposits allowed identifying the main sedimentary facies, ichnofacies and architectural elements and propose a new depositional model for this unit. It was built a sedimentary model in which the Punta Negra Formation deposits have been produced by combined and oscillatory flows which resulted by the combination of hyperpicnal flows and storm waves. The generated combined flows had a direction perpendicular to the paleocoast and were characterized by losing energy in the time and space (seawards). Coarser grained sediments, represented by medium size sand, are found in the proximal area and the finer grained sediments are mainly found in the most distal areas of the sedimentary system / Doutorado / Geologia e Recursos Naturais / Doutor em Ciências

Contribution à l'étude des sédiments marins tunisiens : cas des ports de Radès et de Gabès / Study of Tunisian marine sediments : the case of Rades and Gabes harbors

Bel Hadj Ali, Imen 21 December 2013 (has links)
Cette étude a permis de dresser des fiches synoptiques assez complètes des propriétés des sédiments du port de Radès et du port de Gabès / Commercial harbors, which represent the basis for numerous exchanges of goods and services at the national and international levels, play a key role in the Tunisian economy. Then, dredging of accumulated sediments has always been required to have a proper functioning of trade by sea. These sediments are either discarded at sea or landfilled. Disposal at sea is prohibited for polluted sediments but it remains the most adopted solution in Tunisia as it is the cheapest one.The objective of this research project is to study the environmental and geotechnical characteristics of sediments dredged from two Tunisian harbors: Rades and Gabes and to find new paths of management of at least one of these dredged sediments. Focus is made on the possibility of a recycling method, which consists in the reuse of sediments as added product in construction or road materials. This solution should have a great economic and environmental interest. The first harbor represents the main facility place in the national transport chain. The second one is selected as its sediments present a serious ecological constraint caused by the discharge of wastes into the marine environment. Physical, chemical, mineralogical and environmental characteristics are determined in order to draw up an accomplished synopsis of studied sediments
