Robust optimization with applications in maritime inventory routing

Zhang, Chengliang 27 May 2016 (has links)
In recent years, the importance of incorporating uncertainty into planning models for logistics and transportation systems has been widely recognized in the Operations Research and transportation science communities. Maritime transportation, as a major mode of transport in the world, is subject to a wide range of disruptions at the strategic, tactical and operational levels. This thesis is mainly concerned with the development of robustness planning strategies that can mitigate the effects of some major types of disruptions for an important class of optimization problems in the shipping industry. Such problems arise in the creation and negotiation of long-term delivery contracts with customers who require on-time deliveries of high-value goods throughout the year. In this thesis, we consider the disruptions that can increase travel times between ports and ultimately affect one or more scheduled deliveries to the customers. Computational results show that our integrated solution procedure and robustness planning strategies can generate delivery plans that are both economical as well as robust against uncertain disruptions.

Simulation Model of Maritime Inventory Routing Problem with Particular Application to Cement Distribution

Wirdianto, E., Qi, Hong Sheng, Khan, M. Khurshid January 2011 (has links)
yes / Simulation is undoubtedly a very useful tool for modelling a system specifically in the presence of stochastic elements and complex interactions between the system entities. In this paper, a simulation model to support decision making in ship scheduling for Maritime Inventory Routing Problem (MIRP) with particular application to cement distribution is presented. The system under study is a combined discrete and continuous system, where a heterogeneous fleet of ships with various sizes and types of contracts transport bulk cement products from production facility (Central Supply, CS) of a cement company to its packing plants (Distribution Centres, DCs). The simulation model in this study has been designed and developed thoroughly to emulate the complexity of the real system of the MIRP. The simulation model has demonstrated the capability to provide support for decision making in ship scheduling of the heterogeneous shipping fleet in the following forms: (a) real time states of inventory levels at CS and DCs and (b) ships’ routing. In addition, one of the main strength of this simulation model is its flexibility. It can be easily expanded or adjusted to different size of system entities for example number of CSs, DCs, berths, vessels, and products. / Support for this research is provided by the Directorate of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education, Republic of Indonesia

Transportation mode decisions and the evaluation of maritime transportation in a Swedish setting : A case study

Badasjane, Viktorija January 2018 (has links)
Focus of this bachelor thesis is on examining the port located in Köping, thus a holistic view of maritime transportation is adapted in relation to the examined companies in the region and their global trade. The aim of this study is to examine the current situation and the potential to increase transportation of goods by maritime transportation and what criteria are the most important for different industrial/customer segments. The aim is divided into three research questions: • RQ1: Which decision criterions are considered in selection of transportation mode? • RQ2: What are the advantages and the disadvantages of the different transportation modes? • RQ3: When is maritime transportation preferable to road and railway? The research approach used in order to answer the aim and research questions were; literature review to gain an understanding of freight transportation in a broad context. To narrow down the area, freight transportation practice in the Swedish setting have been examined. Data collection for the Swedish setting have been collected through reports published by the national authorities. Lastly, data for freight transportation in the region of Western Mälardalen has been collected through a case study.Several criterions were found to be of importance during a transportation mode decision, as well as interrelationships between criterions. The identified criterions were cost, reliability and time, frequency and volume and lastly specific goods need. This was found to be in line with theoretical framework, especially the fact that the mode decision is vastly complex and highly depended upon which industry is making the decision, that is the context. A comparison of the modes was made to specify the benefits and downfalls with each mode for answering research question 2. Furthermore, an important identification is the gap between transportation purchaser and providers view of the reliability criterion. This difference can create a gap making it difficult to attract customers to maritime transportation. It is recommended that a thorough investigation is needed in order to examine what aspect of reliability is achievable and realistic in maritime transportation in general and for Köping´s Port in particular.

Optimisation des problèmes de transport multimodal / Optimization of multimodal transportation problems

Oudani, Mustapha 21 May 2016 (has links)
This thesis is a contribution to research on the optimization of multimodal transport problems. The main key concepts of multimodality in the intermodal transportation networks and the state of the art of scientific works in the field are presented. The intermodal terminal location problem is then studied. We propose a genetic algorithm with mixed encoding for solving this problem and we compare our results with those of literature. A set of problems in the framework of our work on the project DCAS (Direct Cargo Axe Seine), carried by the Grand Port Maritime du Havre, are described and modeled by mathematical programming tools. Thus, we studied the problem of the transfer of rail shuttles which is to optimize the transfer of a set of containers between maritime terminals and a multimodal terminal. We then modeled the scheduling problem of freight trains for placement on rail tracks. These problems are solved by using combined optimization simulation approaches. A first application is based on a genetic algorithm coupled with the multi agent’s simulation. A second is to optimize a rail-rail transshipment of containers using an ant colony algorithm embedded in the simulation model and an agent’s collaboration strategy to minimize waiting times and increase cranes productivity.541 ##‎$a@Optimization of multimodal transportation problems
