Santiago, Fernanda Lopes 23 February 2016 (has links)
The aim of this study was to evaluate and correlate the maximum bite force (MBF) and masticatory efficiency (ME) in children and youth before and after been subjected to extensive composite resin restorations in endodontically treated permanent molars. Thirteen (n=13) youth between 10 and 18 years age, female and male with permanent posterior teeth submitted to endodontic treatment and extensive direct composite resin restorations involving one or more functional and non-functional cusps. All patients were recruited before and soon after completion of the restorative procedure to analyze the bite force with gnatodinamometer test and masticatory efficiency with colorimetric method as food artificial test. Results of paired t-test showed no statistically significant differences for masticatory efficiency in habitual ME-F (p=0.744) but for ME-IS there was a significant difference (p < 0.010). Wilcoxon tests showed that the mean concentration of fuchsin was not significant for masticatory efficiency at non-intervention side ME-NI (p >0.01), but for MBF at intervention side there was significant differences (p < 0.001). Pearson’s correlation results showed no significant correlation between maximum bite force (MBF) and masticatory efficiency at the intervention side (ME-IS) before and after the treatment (p> 0.050). This study can conclude that masticatory efficiency and the maximum bite force at intervention side improved significantly after the treatment, showing that restorative with composite resin was effective in short-term rehabilitation. However, there was no significant correlation between maximum bite force and efficiency masticatory at the intervention side before and after the treatment. / Dissertação (Mestrado)
