Benign Ovarian Tumors in Pregnancy: A Case Report of Metachronous Ipsilateral Recurrent Mucinous Cystadenoma in Initial Pregnancy and Mature Cystic Teratoma in Subsequent Pregnancy

Schreck, Arielle M., Mikdachi, Hana F. 03 January 2019 (has links)
Mucinous cystadenomas of the ovary are benign epithelial neoplasms that can grow rapidly during pregnancy. They may cause ovarian torsion, virilization, inferior vena cava syndrome, and even preterm labor and fetal growth restriction. Various theories exist regarding the pathogenesis of these tumors. One hypothesis suggests that they may arise from teratomas. Our case report describes synchronous mucinous cystadenomas and ovarian teratomas, as well as metachronous mucinous cystadenomas in patients with a history of ovarian teratoma. There has been no report of metachronous ipsilateral teratoma after previous mucinous cystadenoma. We present a 22-year-old female with a history of bilateral ovarian tumors in a prior pregnancy noted to have a recurrent ovarian mass on her left ovary at the time of cesarean section of a subsequent pregnancy. She had two prior cystectomies for metachronous mucinous cystadenomas of her left ovary, and a right salpingo-oophorectomy for the ovarian torsion in her previous pregnancy. On her current pregnancy, she developed a mature cystic teratoma of the remaining left ovary. The rapid growth and recurrence rate of these tumors highlights the importance of close surveillance of ovarian masses during pregnancy, even those that seem benign. In this case, a history of unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with multiple contralateral cystectomies did not appear to affect her fertility. Her future ovarian reserve is unknown, pointing to the need for adequate pre-operative counseling in similar cases of ovarian masses in pregnancy.

[pt] O FUTURO JÁ COMEÇOU: O SENTIDO DO TRABALHO PARA PROFISSIONAIS MADUROS BRASILEIROS / [en] THE FUTURE HAS ALREADY BEGUN: THE MEANING OF WORK FOR BRAZILIAN LATE CAREERS

EDUARDA ARIGONI LOPES 04 June 2019 (has links)
[en] We are currently faced with a major demographic change on the global scene. The reduction of the fertility index added to the increase in the life expectancy results in the aging of the population (MARRA, SOUZA, MARQUES, MELO, 2013). We are experiencing, therefore, a continuous process of aging of the workforce (FONTOURA, PICCININI, 2012). Thus, the present research aimed to understand the importance and the meaning of work for mature Brazilian professionals and how they perceives themselves as workers in this advanced stage of professional life. Through semi-structured interviews with workers aged fifty and over, it was found that work still holds great importance in their lives; that these individuals wish to remain working, but in different conditions from the present; and that although they consider themselves better professionals today, they suffer discrimination within and outside the work environment because of their age. The results of this study are expected to contribute to a better understanding of mature workers, leading to preparation and adoption of practices and policies by organizations that attract and retain these professionals.

Guyot, Virginie 18 September 2015 (has links)
Whether increasing forest diversity should result in less insect damage (Associational Resistance, AR) or more damage (Associational Susceptibility, AS) is still debated. Moreover little is known about the diversity - resistance relationships in mature forests due to methodological constraints. To answer this question we used the FundivEUROPE exploratory platform. In this network of 209 mature forest plots sampled along two orthogonal gradients of tree species richness (from one to five species mixtures) and latitude (from the Mediterranean to the boreal forest biomes), we assessed insect defoliation in tree crown. Focusing on eleven broadleaved species, we could for the first time demonstrate a global pattern of reduced defoliation (AR) in mature forests across Europe. We replicated the comparison of insect herbivory in pure vs. mixed plots of oak trees, at the edge or within forest patches of the valleys and hills of Gascony. Here we found significantly less damage on oaks surrounded by heterospecific neighbors, and showed that the magnitude of AR was larger at forest edge than in forest interiors. Last we tested the AR hypothesis with an invasive alien species, the Asian chestnut gall wasp, in Italy. Based on the same methodological approach, our study showed lower gall damage on chestnuts when tree species richness was higher in mixed mature stands. Our work therefore provide new evidences to support the AR hypothesis with three original contributions: i) AR does apply to mature forests, ii) irrespective of the identity of insect herbivores, iii) including exotic species. These findings may have important implications for pest management in forest since the maintenance or improvement of tree species diversity represent a promising tool to prevent insect damage.

The role of mature sectors in promoting regional economic development in the West Midlands

Berkeley, N. January 2011 (has links)
This thesis brings together a coherent and inter-linked body of research published between 2000 and 2009 on clothing manufacturing; a sector that could be labelled ‘mature’ in its phase of economic development in Western economies. It investigates why in recent decades, despite notable early resilience the clothing industry within the West Midlands Region in the UK has declined markedly, placing this decline in the context of the picture nationally and internationally. It provides an in-depth analysis of the how the sector is placed to adapt, reverse decline and enhance its competitiveness, conceptualising firm behaviour in respect of attitudes to growth and change. Finally, it prescribes strategies and actions for the sustainability of such mature manufacturing sectors within modern growth-led economies. In doing so it recognises the crucial role played by government institutions at all scales in facilitating this process.

The social construction of the mature student experience

Lusk, Christine Isabel January 2008 (has links)
Using a Social Constructionist lens, this study gathers fresh empirical data on the experience of a “Mature Student”, examining its multiple constructions, both objective and subjective, within the context of a Scottish Ancient university. For six centuries, Ancient universities have held expectations that incoming students will adjust to fit the autonomous institutional culture. However the expansion of Higher Education in 1992 has introduced changes in legislation and funding which have shifted the onus of that adjustment to the organisations themselves. This study is placed at the fundamental core of the tension between an institution struggling with the changing nature of its purpose and non-traditional students with changing expectations. Through analysis of daily journals and semi-structured interviews with 16 students and 12 staff, it explores the interpretations which both sets of actors take from student/institution interaction, and does so with respect to the student’s holistic life context rather than viewing only the learner role. Particular emphasis is placed on the losses and gains from the experience, including examination of what a degree symbolises in personal, fiscal and psychological terms. Based on a synthesis of literature reviews and empirical data, the study categorises the Mature students into three groups according to experiential themes within the student journey, drawing out theoretical and policy contributions from the process. Although mismatches are shown to exist between student and staff expectations of institutional purpose, a contemporary, and valid, role for the Ancient institution is outlined in terms of developing individual agency.

Vergara Egert, Pablo Mario January 2001 (has links)
Magister en Ciencias Biológicas mención Ecología Facultad de Ciencias / Life-history attributes could be used to predict species responses to habitat fragmentation or sensitivity. We compared the incidence and sensitivity to fragmentation of four understory birds (Rhinocryptidae family). Rhinocryptids inhabit deciduous forests of Central Chile and our study was conduced in a landscape mosaic of pine (Pinus radiata) plantations and native forest fragments. Sensitivity was positively and strongly correlated with rhinocryptid incidence. Understory structure was the main factor that predicted rhinocryptid presence and abundance. The least sensitive species, Andean (Scytalopus magellanicus fuscus) and the Ochre-flanked Tapaculo (Eugralla paradoxa), were positively associated to dead pine branches and negatively to forest fragment size. Rhinocryptids reduced their abundance in mature forest, but they were willing to cross between different habitat types. However, one of the most sensitive species, Chestnut-throated Huet-Huet (Pteroptochos castaneus), did not move from forest fragments to pine with poor understory when we displayed playback trials. Overall, rhinocryptid species are affected by fragmentation depending of their life-history attributes. The less sensitive species profited from habitat and landscape transformations. We conclude that rhinocryptids could persist in this landscape, as changes in habitat conditions do not become deleterious, such as understory structure.

Estimação dos parâmetros genéticos do peso adulto em matrizes da raça Nelore / Genetic parameters estimation for mature weight in Nelore beef cattle

Pedrosa, Victor Breno 07 December 2006 (has links)
The study of the productive traits aims the obtention of animals that have genotypes with potencial for high productions but that are also adaptable to the environment of the extensive creation in Brazil. These productive and adaptable animals could improve the costs, making therefore, their creation sustainable on a commercial scale. Although the reproductive characteristics have an extremely importance as an objective of the selection, its utilization have not been ample in genetic improvement programs for being considered as a low heritability trait. Between the productive traits existent in beef cattle it can be cited the mature weight trait, that must be evaluated and monitorated for the size increase control of the females by the indirect answer to weight selection, in order to confront, economically, the results. In this context it was evaluated data from 74.547 animals with the objective of analyze the mature weight and the adult weight with repeated measurements (MWr) in Nelore animals estimating the heritability of the ponderal development traits, using linear models; Estimate the correlation between mature weight (MW) and the post-weaning weight trait (PW), conformation (CONF), precocity (PREC), musculature (MUSC) and hip height (HH); Determine if there is an advantage in the inclusion of the mature weight in selection programs of the Nelore breed. The components of variance and covariance were estimated by the method of Restricted Maximum Likelihood Multiple Trait Derivative Free (MTDFREML) using the animal model. The estimation of the heritability coefficients were 0,43 for MW and 0,41 for MWr; 0,38 for PW; 0,23 for CONF; 0,19 for PREC; 0,22 for MUSC and 0,35 for HH. The genetic correlation coefficients varied from 0,37 to 0,97. The results suggest that genetic gains can be obtained with the selection for the mature weight characteristic, with the monitoration of the female sizes for Nelore breed. The correlation between the characteristics in study shows that there is a tendency for alteration in size characteristics through the selection for mature weight.
