In this thesis I critically analyze the ways in which the work of Nova Scotian artist Maud Lewis circulates within the categories of “fine art” and “Folk art” by examining three documentary films that deal with her life and work. My aim is to draw attention to Lewis’s current status in Canada as an artistic genius –an individual of seemingly exceptional talent who is also a Folk artist – that is, paradoxically, a “Folk artist-genius.” As vehicles through which to explore the construction of Maud Lewis and the concept of the Folk artist-genius I examine three films about Maud Lewis produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and the National Film Board (NFB): The Once-Upon-A-Time World of Maud Lewis (CBC, 1965), Maud Lewis: A World Without Shadows (NFB, 1976) and The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis (NFB, 1998). Lewis exemplifies the qualities identified with the Folk, including geographic isolation, rusticity, simplicity, closeness to nature, industriousness and innocence. Yet, while she is thoroughly imbued with Folkishness, she is simultaneously viewed as the artist-genius, an individualized and mythologized character of sublime talent. Her originality, prodigy, virtuosity and spirituality are hailed as indicative of her genius, in the expression of which she is perceived to have overcome ordinary relations to the material world – social seclusion, physical disability and poverty. This thesis explores the paradoxical conflation of the concepts of the “Folk” and the “artist-genius” in the figure of Lewis, an under-analyzed yet superlative example of this phenomenon. Lewis, as Folk artist-genius, navigates between these two domains; she possesses the qualities of the traditional artistic “master,” but remains representative of the quintessential Folk, at once transcending and “typical” of the rustic Nova Scotian people. CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / Cette recherche cherche, à travers des contributions de La psychanalyste Maud Mannoni, rÃflÃchir à place de lâanalyste dans la clinique avec les enfants. Pour Ãa, nous avons abordà quelques oeuvres qui accompagnent la trajectoire de cet auteur qui privilÃgient lâÃcoute du sujet et de sa parole, en proposant des questions qui indiquent une direction Ãthique dans lâaccueil clinique des enfants. Nous avons choisi comme mÃthode suivre une structure de chapitres dÃveloppÃs à travers des ruptures qui trouvons chez Maud Mannoni et qui ont fonctionnà comme clà de lecture pour saisir ses contributions. ConformÃment à lecture de ses traveaux, donc, on a trouvà trois essieux thÃmathiques qui sont importants pour penser le place de lâanalyste dans la clinique des enfants. Ils sont: les critiques entrepris par cette psychanalyste Ãs demandes pÃdagogiques de la pratique analythique des enfants; des polemiques dans lesquelles elle sâa insere à rapport des institutions psychiatriques dans son carctÃre de lâisolement face à folie et, finalement, des questions sur les conceptions de la formation de lâanalyste de son Ãpoque face au formalisme bureaucratique, des dÃformations et des excÃs thÃoriques. On a trouvà dans lâemsamble chez Maud Mannoni une comprÃhension qui Ãleve lâexperiÃnce clinique et lâÃcoute du sujet au Ãtat principal nÃcessaire pour la pratique de le psychanalyste et, ainsi, au travail clinique avec des enfants. / Esta pesquisa busca atravÃs das contribuiÃÃes da psicanalista Maud Mannoni refletir acerca do lugar do analista na clÃnica com crianÃas. Para tanto, abordamos algumas obras que acompanham a trajetÃria desta autora que privilegia a escuta do sujeito e de sua palavra, propondo questÃes que indicam uma direÃÃo Ãtica no atendimento clÃnico com crianÃas. Optamos, metodologicamente, por seguir uma estrutura de capÃtulos desenvolvidos a partir de rupturas que encontramos presentes na obra de Maud Mannoni e que funcionaram como chave de leitura para apreendermos suas contribuiÃÃes. Conformaram-se, assim, diante da leitura de seus trabalhos, trÃs eixos temÃticos que se configuram importantes para se pensar o lugar do analista na clÃnica com crianÃas, quais sejam: as crÃticas empreendidas por esta psicanalista Ãs demandas pedagogizantes da prÃtica analÃtica com crianÃas, as polÃmicas nas quais se inseriu em relaÃÃo Ãs instituiÃÃes psiquiÃtricas em seu carÃter de isolamento diante da loucura e, por fim, os questionamentos Ãs concepÃÃes de formaÃÃo do analista de sua Ãpoca, face ao formalismo burocrÃtico, as distorÃÃes teÃricas e os excessos de teorizaÃÃo. Encontramos no conjunto da obra de Maud Mannoni uma compreensÃo que eleva a experiÃncia clÃnica e a escuta do sujeito à condiÃÃo primordial necessÃria à prÃtica do psicanalista e, assim, ao trabalho clÃnico com crianÃas.

Permafrost is a variable in Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems, and the role it plays in the cryosphere is not well understood. There is much still to be learnt about the thermal state, physical properties, thickness and age of permafrost in Western Dronning Maud Land (WDML). Active layer dynamics and observed change over time have the potential to improve our knowledge of climate change. Understanding the effects of a warming climate on permafrost can also be of benefit to infrastructure, especially in areas with a large amount of frozen ground such as Scandinavia, Canada and Russia. Active layer and permafrost dynamics of WDML, Antarctica, are presented and discussed using data from six study sites, namely the Robertskollen, Vesleskarvet, Flarjuven, Grunehogna, Slettjfell nunataks and the Troll research station in the Jutulsessen area. Ground and ambient air temperature, as well as ground moisture data were collected for each site. An inventory of active layer and permafrost landforms was compiled, as were the frequency of cycles over the zero-degree isotherm, and the depth of the active layer. Furthermore, 3D models, geo-referenced maps and Digital Elevation Models were created of study areas with the use of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Polygonal features are the most common landscape feature and are common to most of the study sites. Robertskollen has the deepest active layer at over 66cm and Slettfjell the shallowest at 9cm. A maximum recorded air temperature of 8.76°C (10/11/2014) occurred at Troll with the second highest maximum of 6.77°C (22/12/2010) recorded at Vesleskarvet. Robertskollen has the highest observable biological growth and a maximum recorded ground temperature of 22.84°C (10/01/2014). Troll and Valterkulten, registered the second and third highest ground temperatures respectively. The high ground Temperature observed for Robertskollen may be ascribed to it being the lowest altitude site. The highest number of cycles over the zero-degree isotherm was observed at Troll (11.01%), followed by Robertskollen (10.99%). For relatively warm areas, such as Robertskollen it is recommended that two metre borehole loggers are installed in order to capture a detailed understanding of the active layer. The UAV proved to be a beneficial tool for capturing aerial photographs for post fieldwork analysis and 3D modelling.
