Augmentative-Alternative Communication Access for Individuals with Communication Disorders in Medical SettingsAmundsen, Stephanie 01 January 2014 (has links)
This study surveyed speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working in medical settings in the state of Florida in order to: (a) assess the availability of AAC devices, related materials, and services in acute, sub-acute, long-term care, and outpatient medical facilities, (b) examine barriers and supports in providing AAC services to patients with complex communication needs (CCN) in the aforementioned settings, and (c) determine perceived levels of AAC knowledge of health care practitioners. One of the study's major findings was that 97.59% of SLPs served at least one patient they identified as having CCNs, and 94.1% of respondents indicated that their patients could benefit from increased access to AAC devices and service delivery. A notable finding relating to the need for increased AAC-related communication partner instruction (CPI) is as follows: 97% and 100% of respondents indicated that increased CPI for medical practitioners/staff and family members, respectively, were important elements in order to ensure functional communication for individuals with AAC needs in the medical setting. Major barriers to providing AAC services related to device access (i.e., lack of AAC supports / devices, lack of funding for equipment, length of time of device funding). Other barriers were related to the nature of medical settings (i.e., frequently changing caseloads, limited time with patients) and demands of the job (i.e., lack of time to prepare AAC materials / devices). Supports to providing AAC services included low-tech AAC options and mobile technologies. In terms of practitioner knowledge, 57.6% of respondents rated themselves not at all or somewhat knowledgeable regarding AAC. Physicians, nurses, and other rehabilitation professionals were rated as less than knowledgeable by 95%, 97%, and 84.3% of participants, respectively. Overall, the findings of this study suggests there is a high prevalence of patients in medical settings with AAC needs, and some face unmet communication needs resulting from barriers related to the setting itself, lack of access to AAC devices and materials, and limited time spent on AAC service delivery.

Previous issue date: 2016-09-23 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research investigates the history of women diagnosed as insane and put in Pinel Sanatorium between the years of 1929 and 1944. Through either medical records produced on that institution and writings from doctor Pacheco e Silva, the Sanatorium's founder and director, it is intended to track the profiles to be considered as rule deviants, problematising, thus, the patterns conceived for the women. These histories have been developed within the city of Sao Paulo; therefore it became necessary to elaborate a city panorama in its modernising perspective, highlighting its urbanization process and the intervention of medicine in the urban constitution. The city's modernising project is related to the institutionalisation of mental institutions, as well as the increasing presence of the medical speech, intending to a standardisation of behaviours both in the public and private space. Thus, there is the question to the social roles attributed to women, which concern their responsibility due to the family and the formation of future citizens, being their social function attached to biological/breeding aspects, outlining then the existing discourse concerning womanhood, wifehood attributions, motherhood attributions and to be a housewife as the natural fate to women, as opposed to the implemented restriction to other possibilities of female experiences, being these identified as deviant, abnormal and pathological / Esta pesquisa investiga a história de mulheres diagnosticadas como loucas e internadas no Sanatório Pinel de Pirituba entre 1929 e 1944.

New Amsterdam / Representation of realism and drama through medical discourse in the dubbed version of Grey's Anatomy, The Good Doctor and New AmsterdamSanchez Marquez, Jazmin Joselin 20 July 2021 (has links)
American medical dramas have become a social and cultural phenomenon, attracting a large number of audiences both locally and abroad. Although some studies point out that the role of television is exclusively to entertain, other studies suggest that what is represented in these programs has had an impact on people's perception of what doctors and their environment are. This paper addresses this phenomenon from a linguistic approach, as it seeks to analyze the construction of realism and drama through medical discourse in the dubbed version of three contemporary series Grey's Anatomy, The Good Doctor and New Amsterdam. For this purpose, two techniques will be applied: content analysis and contrastive-textual analysis. The first technique will describe the function of the dialogues within the narratives of the series, the construction of the characters and the dramatic scenario. The second technique will serve to describe the translation techniques used in the dubbing, as well as the naturalization rules and the synchronization.

The present study has the purpose of discussing the phenomenon of the postponement of maternity to the age of 35 years aged of, relating this process to the Social Destraditionalization, which is taking place in all everyday’s spheres, inclusively in Brazilian social-familiar context. Apart from the changes in the ethos of maternity, the medical speech defines, from the risk focus, what is normal and abnormal in the reproductive behavior. Based on such assumptions we analysed the perception of women who postponed maternity to the age of 35 years, associating that to the affective-familiar relationship, work, pregnancy and mothernity. We interviewed nine pregnant women between 35 and 39 years old in the Ambulatory of the Hospital Universitário Pedro Ernesto from july to october of 1998, who had no chronic illness or physical- linicalintercurrency. The results of this qualitative study points out that the modernizing process and its changes in the traditional familiar standard, influences the experience of maternity. This review of values which reters to the female functions and the mother role follows to the incorporation of women to the job market and the steady increase of the school capital. We were also able to conclude that because of the current values, “being mother” to some women is no longer realized as the only aim in life, seeing that work is as personal achievements.
