Music as The Between: The Idea of Meeting in Existence, Music and Education

As a violinist, teacher, and thinker, I am concerned to articulate the relevance of music to the lives of my audience, my students and myself. But my concern is not merely to describe the meanings that people experience when they engage music. Rather, I am interested in constituting the musical relevance that each of us must actualize as we work to make our lives vital and meaningful. Accordingly, in my study I articulate in philosophical, yet practical, terms, a particular attitude of musical engagement that I call meeting. Grounded in Martin Buber’s idea of human existence as I-Thou, my conception of meeting has a specific character. Each side of the meeting must meet itself in its work to constitute the adequacy of its engagement with the other as it must meet with the other in its work to constitute the adequacy of its engagement with itself. It follows that the essence of human meeting is not merely the “reality” – physical, cultural, intellectual – of people who come together. Rather, the essence is their self-critical thought that is created as they share their lives with each other. The focus, then, is not the meeting’s outcome but rather the meeting itself insofar as it constitutes mutual understanding, communication and love. Thus, at the heart of my study, I constitute music in the same way, not as a physical or cultural “reality,” but rather as the meeting between music and musical participant that demands that each – music and participant – attend to self and other. The idea that music’s whole being is meeting has profound implications for how we conceive of music education. Accordingly, the ultimate purpose of my study is to bring my ideas of musical meeting to bear upon how we teach and learn music in the classroom.

D-Wave — Quantum computation is based on a very compelling idea: that physics, and physics alone, ultimately determines what can be computed, and how efficiently. Changing the laws of physics relevant for a computing device can open up new possibilities for manipulating information, allowing better algorithms that could transform the way we live. Quantum computation has, up until very recently, been the province of basic research. It is clear that the extreme difficulty and complexity of converting this basic science into useful technology cannot occur within a basic research environment. Here I will describe the conceptual framework behind D-Wave’s organization and technology development model, and compare and contrast this approach to other possible models.

Frontiers in Nuclear Theory: From Light Nuclei to Astrophysics

Nuclear theory today aims at a comprehensive understanding of properties of nuclides in the whole nuclear chart. A number of challenges are encountered by theorists along the road of accomplishing this goal. Recent progresses in many fronts lead to a renaissance of nuclear physics. Advances in effective field theory provide us with a tool to derive nuclear forces starting from the fundamental theory of Quantum-Chromo-Dynamics: two- and three-body forces among nucleons arise naturally and consistently with each other. This complex nature of the nuclear force generates a broad diversity of phenomena, especially in nuclei far from stability. A fascinating example is the arising of halo nuclear structures leading to extremely large radial extensions. Owing to their short lifetimes, most of these nuclei do not naturally exist on Earth. To be studied they must be synthesized in the laboratory, at the so-called radioactive beam facilities, like TRIUMF. Measurements provide a test of the predictive power of theoretical models. Nowadays, thanks to the advent of high performance computing, new ab-initio methods for the solution of the quantum many-body problem become available. Exotic properties of nuclei can be derived directly from the interaction among protons and neutrons. Furthermore, the investigation of astrophysical implications of nuclear processes, e.g. in the nucleosynthesis of elements is another key aspect in nuclear theory. This synergy between nuclear physics and astrophysics makes the scenario even more exciting. I will discuss some advances in the field with emphasis on future perspective. In this talk I will review the numerous observational evidences supporting the existence of the dark side of the Universe, which is why cosmologists claim shamelessly that 95% of the Universe is made of something they do not know the nature of. I will then discuss many of the hypothetical physical origins for Dark Matter and Dark Energy and outline the major research directions now undertaken in order to test the various possible ideas. Snowflakes, Stress and Semiconductors: Do You See a Pattern Here?

Fractals are patterns that repeat at many magnifications. These intricate patterns are found throughout nature, ranging from clouds, rivers and lightning through to our brains, blood vessels and lungs. Due to their prevalence in nature and their growing impact on cultures around the world, fractals have assumed a rapidly expanding role across the sciences and arts. In this talk, I will explore some of the intriguing properties of fractals by taking a meandering walk through the research disciplines I have worked in. These will include nano-electronic circuits, Antarctic ice-shelves, brain structure and artworks. I hope to show a common theme - that quantification of their underlying fractal geometry provides an enhanced understanding well beyond the traditional qualitative views of these diverse systems.

Allmänsjuksköterskors upplevelse av mötet med patienter med psykisk ohälsa - En kvalitativ intervjustudie

Introduktion: Psykisk ohälsa beskrivs idag som ett hälsotillstånd som är vanligt bland patienter på sjukhus, de senaste åren har psykisk ohälsa hos patienterna ökat. I sjuksköterskans möte med patienter är det viktigt att i tid upptäcka psykisk ohälsa för att på ett hälsofrämjande sätt hjälpa patienten, därför är det viktigt för sjuksköterskor att ha kunskaper om hur man vårdar patienter med psykisk ohälsa. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att beskriva hur sjuksköterskor som arbetar med somatisk vård upplever mötet med patienter som har psykisk ohälsa. Metod: Denna studie har en deskriptiv design med kvalitativ ansats. Intervjuer gjordes med åtta stycken sjuksköterskor på en somatisk avdelning. Intervjuerna bearbetades med en kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultat: Sjuksköterskor upplever att de har för lite kunskap och tid för att möta patienter med psykisk ohälsa. Sjuksköterskors upplevelse av mötet beror mycket på dennes utbildning, erfarenhet och kunskap. Att möta patienter med psykisk ohälsa kan ibland vara problematiskt på grund av den tidsbrist och stress som finns i vården. Samarbetet mellan yrkeskategorier inom vården bör utvecklas mer för att mötet mellan vårdpersonalen och en patient med psykisk ohälsa ska vara tillfredsställande. Slutsats: Sjuksköterskan behöver mer kunskap för att möta patienter med psykisk ohälsa. Det är ofta för lite personal i sjukvården för att sjuksköterskor skall ha tid för att på ett värdigt sätt möta patienterna med den tid som de behöver. Ett bättre samarbete i vården mellan de olika yrkeskategorierna skulle underlätta vården av patienterna. / Introduction: Mental illness is nowadays described as a fairly common health state among patients at hospitals, in the last few years mental illness among patients has increased. In the nurses meeting with patients, it is important to detect mental illness for a health-promoting way to help the patient, so it is important for nurses to have knowledge of how to care for patients with mental illness. Objective: The purpose of this study is to describe how nurses working with somatic care experience meeting with patients who have mental illness. Method: This study has a descriptive design with qualitative approach. Interviews were conducted with eight nurses in a somatic unit. Interviews were processed with a qualitative content analysis. Results: Nurses experience a limitation in knowledge and time to meet patients with mental illness. The experiences the nurses have of  meeting patients with mental illness relates to a large extent back to the nurses individual training, experience and knowledge. For nurses who meet patients with mental illness it can be problematic due to the time pressure and stress that exists within caring. The collaboration between professionals in healthcare should be developed more to the meeting between the nursing staff and a patient with mental illness to be satisfactory. Conclusion: The Nurse needs more knowledge to meet patients with mental illness. There is often a resource limitation in health care that makes it difficult for the nurse to meet patients with mental illness worthily and give them the time they need. Better collaboration of care between the various occupational categories would facilitate the care of patients.

Įvadinėje darbo dalyje analizuojamos efektyvumo ir veiksmingumo sąvokos valdymo proceso kontekste. Pirmojoje darbo dalyje teoriniu aspektu analizuojami pagrindiniai susirinkimų planavimo, organizavimo ir tinkamo jų vedimo, priimtų sprendimų įforminimo bei įgyvendinimo aspektai. Empirinėje darbo dalyje pateikiama tyrimo metodologija, analizuojami tyrimo, atlikto Lietuvos savivaldybėse, rezultatai, pateikiamos tyrimo išvados bei pristatomi pasiūlymai susirinkimų proceso tobulinimui. / The Master’s thesis analyzes the aspects of meeting organization in Lithuanian municipalities and determines efficiency problems, as well as provides recommendations for improvement. The introduction of the thesis analyzes the concepts of efficiency and effectiveness in the context of management. The first section of the thesis theoretically analyzes the main aspects of planning and organizing meetings, as well as how to hold a meeting, record a decision that was adopted, and implement it properly. The empirical part of the meeting provides research methodology, analyzes results of the research that was accomplished in Lithuanian municipalities, provides research conclusions, and presents recommendations for improving the process of meetings.

The role of children's everyday cultures in schooled literacy practices

This self-study examines the role that children’s out-of school lives play in the “schooled literacy practices” of the Morning Meeting, a daily meeting in the teacher-researcher’s classroom. Morning Meeting in this Grade 2/3 classroom became a contestable “third space” where several professional tensions intersected for the teacher-researcher. The study explores questions of what “counts as literacy,” what role “popular culture” plays in school, and whose voices are privileged or marginalized in schooled literacy discussions. Data was collected over a 3-week period in the form of immediate and more distanced teacher reflections. A Bourdieusian theoretical framework, critical sociocultural literacy theory, third space theory, and artifactual critical literacy, offered the teacher-researcher lenses through which to analyze the meanings found in the everyday stories and artifacts young children share in the schooled literacy practice of Morning Meeting. The findings of this study inform and create new thinking about the entanglements of children’s out-of-school everyday culture with schooled literacy practices.

Vårdtagare med invandrarbakgrund : Distriktssköterskors erfarenheter av vårdmöten

Bakgrund: Hemsjukvården är en verksamhet som inbegriper vårdmöten med vårdtagare med invandrarbakgrund. En god kommunikation anses grundläggande för att distriktssköterskor ska kunna ge individanpassad information och förebygga sjukdom samt främja hälsa. Det som anses försvåra kommunikationen är då vårdtagare och distriktssköterskor talar olika språk eller använder skilda kroppspråk. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att undersöka distriktssköterskors erfarenheter av det vårdande mötet med vårdtagare med invandrarbakgrund i hemsjukvården. Metod: En kvantitativ deskriptiv design användes med en enkät som datainsamlingsmetod. Materialet analyserades i SPSS version 20 samt genom inspiration från kvalitativ manifest innehållsanalys. Resultat: Resultatet skildrar distriktssköterskors erfarenheter inom hemsjukvården i ett län i södra Sverige samt hur deras erfarenheter varierar. Denna studie visar att majoriteten av deltagarna har erfarenheter av vårdmöten med vårdtagare med invandrarbakgrund. Det framgår även att det föreligger ett behov av kompetensutveckling särskilt inom interkulturell kommunikation, religionskunskap och kultur. Övervägande delen av deltagarna menar även att vårdmötet försvåras då språkskillnader föreligger. Slutsats: Studien visar att det anses föreligga ett behov av ökade kunskaper inom detta betydelsefulla område, och att studien därför bör upprepas för att erhålla ett större material. Kunskapen skulle kunna erhållas i grundutbildningen till sjuksköterska, i specialistutbildningen eller i form av internutbildning på arbetsplats. Genom mer kunskaper skulle det kunna skapas bättre förutsättningar för ett lyckat vårdmöte samt leda till ett vårdande arbete av god kvalité. / Background: Home health care is an activity that involves care meetings with patients with a migrant background. Good communication is considered essential for district nurses to be able to provide individualized information and prevent disease and promote health. The communication is considered more difficult when patients and district nurses speak different languages or use different body language. Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the district nurses experiences of caring meetings with patients with and immigrant background in home health care. Method: A quantitative descriptive design was used based on a questionnaire. The material was analyzed in SPSS version 20, except for the open ended questions that were analysed by inspiration from qualitative content analysis. Results: The results portray district nurses experiences in home helth care in a county in southren Sweden and how their experiences vary. This study shows that the majority of the participants have experience of caring meetings with patients with immigrant background. Participants identified needs for more training and education about intercultural communication, religion and culture. The majority of respondents believe that caring meetings become aggravated by language differences. Conclusion: The study shows that there is a need for increased knowledge in this important field and that the study should be repeated to obtain a larger material. This knowledge could be obtained in basic training for nurses, in specialized training or in-service training at the workplace. More knowledge would be able to create better conditions for a successful care meeting and nursing of good quality.
