The Subjection of Authority and Death Through Humor: Carnivalesque, Incongruity, and Absurdism in Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and No Country for Old MenCovington, Ruth Ellen 12 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Cormac McCarthy's representation of the comic theories of the carnivalesque, incongruity, and absurdism by the antagonists of Blood Meridian and No Country for Old Men demonstrates the unique and ostensible power of humor over (or at least, its awareness of and reconciliation to the absurdity of) death; it also emphasizes the supreme power and influence of humor as a means for destroying other institutions and philosophies which claim knowledge or authority but fail to sustain individuals in times of crisis. This makes humor a formidable factor in determining and justifying the outcome of human interactions and in defining the strengths and limitations of McCarthy's antagonists.

Distinct lower visual field preference for object shapeSchmidtmann, G., Logan, Andrew J., Kennedy, Graeme J., Gordon, G.E., Loffler, G. 2015 April 1929 (has links)
Yes / Humans manipulate objects chiefly within their lower visual field, a consequence of upright posture and the anatomical position of hands and arms. This study tested the hypothesis of enhanced sensitivity to a range of stimuli within the lower visual field. Following current models of hierarchical processing within the ventral steam, discrimination sensitivity was measured for orientation, curvature, shape (radial frequency patterns), and faces at various para-central locations (horizontal, vertical, and main diagonal meridians) and eccentricities (5° and 10°). Peripheral sensitivity was isotropic for orientation and curvature. By contrast, observers were significantly better at discriminating shapes throughout the lower visual field compared to elsewhere. For faces, however, peak sensitivity was found in the left visual field, corresponding to the right hemispheric localization of human face processing. Presenting head outlines without any internal features (e.g., eyes, mouth) recovered the lower visual field advantage found for simple shapes. A lower visual field preference for the shape of an object, which is absent for more localized information (orientation and curvature) but also for more complex objects (faces), is inconsistent with a strictly feed-forward model and poses a challenge for multistage models of object perception. The distinct lower visual field preference for contour shapes is, however, consistent with an asymmetry at intermediate stages of visual processing, which may play a key role in representing object characteristics that are particularly relevant to visually guided actions.

Manuální techniky vycházející z teorie fasciálního zřetězení / Manual techniques based on the theory of fascial chainsSaifrová, Tereza January 2015 (has links)
Title: Manual techniques based on the theory of fascial chains Objectives: The aim of this thesis is to summerize academic findings and information about anatomy, histology, neurophysiology and biomechanical properties of fascial tissue from the latest research and studies in the theoretical part. Analytical and descriptive part is firstly focused on principles of tissue remodeling, mechanism of myofascial therapy effects and on diagnostic methods which are available for evaluation of structure, properties and function of fascia. The main goal is to describe and compare different diagnostic and therapeutic approaches of most known authors based on various theories of fascial chains. Another important purpose of this work is to demonstrate the objective effect of particular fascial techniques and manual therapies. Methods: This thesis is theoretical work with the purpose of summerizing, organizing and analyzing relevant studies related to the topic through the literary research in available academic databases. Results: The key information concerning structure and properties of fascial tissue have been collected and analyzed according to the latest fascial researches. This thesis describes three best known and widely used approaches which concern the theory of fascial chains and practical outfall...

Mixed methods study of acupuncture treatment for chronic pelvic pain in womenChong, Ooi Thye January 2017 (has links)
Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is defined as constant or intermittent lower, cyclical or non-cyclical abdominal pain of at least six months’ duration. In the United Kingdom, over 1 million women suffer from CPP, with an estimated annual healthcare cost above £150 million. The aetiology of CPP is unknown in up to 50% of women, and in the remainder, the symptoms of CPP is associated with endometriosis, pelvic adhesions, irritable bowel syndrome or painful bladder syndrome. CPP is often accompanied by painful periods, pain during sexual intercourse and defaecation. Fatigue, sleep disturbances and depression are also common among this group of women. CPP asserts a heavy emotional, social and economic burden. Standard treatments such as hormonal and analgesic regimens are often associated with unacceptable side effects, even if helpful for the pain, underlining an urgent need for a satisfactory treatment. The meridian balanced method (BM) electro-acupuncture (EA) treatment (acupuncture needling + traditional Chinese medicine health consultation [TCM HC]) may be effective in managing CPP symptoms. Thus, I have completed a pilot study comprising of a three-armed randomised controlled trial (RCT), using a mixed methods research (MMR) approach, to assess the feasibility of a future large-scale RCT to determine the effectiveness of the meridian BMEA treatment on CPP in women. My hypothesis is that it is feasible to conduct such a large-scale RCT for CPP in women. The primary objectives were to determine recruitment and retention rates. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the, acceptability of the methods of recruitment, randomisation, interventions and assessment tools and any signals of effectiveness of the interventions. Thirty (30) women with CPP were randomised into three groups: BMEA treatment, TCM HC, or National Health Service standard care (NHS SC) group. The effects of my interventions were assessed by validated pain, physical and emotional functioning questionnaires, completed at weeks 0, 4, 8 and 12 of the study. Semi-structured telephone interviews and focus group discussions to explore participants’ experience of the study were conducted. Of the 59 women who were referred to the study, 30 women (51%) were randomised. There was a statistically significant difference in retention rates between the three groups. The retention rates were 80% (95% CI 74-96), in the BMEA treatment group, 53 % (95% CI 36- 70) in the TCM HC group and 87% (95% CI 63-90) in the NHS SC group. (Chi-square test, p=0.08) The attendance rates of the BMEA treatment group were 90% compared to 56% in the TCM HC group. There was a statistically significant difference (Mann-Whitney test, p=0.023) in attendance between the two intervention groups. Telephone interviews regarding the acceptability of the methods of recruitment, randomisation, assessment tools and interventions were positive. No adverse effects that were directly related to BMEA treatments were reported or observed. A higher proportion of the BMEA treatment group achieved clinical significance in the VAS-pain, BPI-pain severity, interference, and sleep scores, when compared to the other two groups. Due to small sample sizes, there was insufficient power to show statistically significant difference. (Fishers Exact Test, p=1.0) Analyses of the questionnaire data per group showed statistically significant differences in the following: the BMEA treatment group experienced less in pain at weeks 4 (p=0.01) and 8 (p=0.005); less helplessness (p=0.03) and their anxiety and depression scores declined at week 4 (p=0.04). The NHS SC group also reported less pain at week 4 (p=0.04). However, this group scored higher in anxiety and depression at weeks 8 and 12 (p=0.04). No statistically significant differences were achieved between the three groups at baseline, weeks 4, 8 and 12 in all scores. The therapeutic benefits gained by the TCM HC group were less compared to those of the BMEA treatment group, but better when compared to the NHS SC group. The BMEA treatment and TCM HC groups showed lower scores in anxiety and depression while the NHS SC group showed higher scores in anxiety and depression. The NHS SC group also tended to ruminate and magnify their problems as well as feeling more helpless than the other two groups. The three key themes that emerged from thematic analysis of focus group discussions were the “whole person effects” where participants reported an improvement in pain, sleep and a general sense of wellbeing in the two intervention groups; the “experience of standard care” and “impact of living with CPP”. In conclusion, the results of my pilot study are supportive of the feasibility of a future large-scale study. There were signals of effectiveness of interventions but the sample size was too small to make a definitive conclusion.

Who we are and will beJackson, Linda Carol, 1949- 01 April 1994 (has links)
The protagonists in the fiction of Paule Marshall, Alice Walker, and Toni
Morrison illuminate American cultural perceptions of black women and illustrate how the
creators of these characters hope to change those perceptions. I studied Paule Marshall's
Daughters, Alice Walker's Meridian and The Color Purple, and Toni Morrison's The
Bluest Eye to learn what the writers of these novels have to say about the women they
hope black girls can grow up to be and to learn what potential for self-development they
see for black women. For example, in order to become whole people, what do black girls
and black women need from their parents and their community? What do black women
need from their intimate relationships?
"Part One: Political, Historical and Religious Identity " surveys politics, religion
and history for views of black women. Politically, they appear disenfranchised;
historically they were property. In reference to religion, I found that a white male
religion does not serve black women well. Walker sees god within her female protagonist
Celie, and Marshall has a belief in a Caribbean/African diaspora that provides a sense of
spiritual and cultural continuity.
"Part Two: Childhood Identity" explores childhood and the community's role.
Childhood appears as a critical time for self-development. The adults in the community
contribute to the child's self-awareness. Mistreatment of girls causes them harm
throughout their lives. How well the community safeguards its children is a measure of
how highly these children are valued. These authors want to see girls more highly
regarded. Toward this end, they expose the abuse that takes place in the community.
Morrison shows not only the abuse, but also the love. By showing concerned parents as
well as neglectful ones, Morrison offers a fuller portrait of the community she knows.
The Color Purple also tells a story of sexual abuse of a girl, but this abuse is overcome by
the inner strength of the victim combined with the loving support of Shug Avery and the
supportive community context of the juke where Celie is accepted. The portrayal of
childhood in Daughters involves a Caribbean island culture where the roles of the women
that the child Ursa observes offer few role models.
"Part Three: Adult Relational Identity" looks at the dilemma in communication
between the sexes and across the generations from mother to daughter. Step-fathers and
husbands are abusive characters in Walker's writing, while Morrison shows a loving
father and an incestuous father in The Bluest Eye.
"Part Four: Language Identity" discusses Black English, orality and dialect,
looking at the role of language as an aspect of self-definition. James Baldwin's view of
language is presented: rejecting a child's language is rejecting the child himself.
Baldwin's view supports the attitude toward language as self-defining that appears in the
writing of Marshall, Morrison, and Walker. These authors show pride in Black English,
and they demonstrate their ability with edited English through their own writing. / Graduation date: 1994

Time and the Making of New Zealand:A Theme in the Development of a Settler Society, 1840 to 1868Morris, Gerard S. January 2012 (has links)
The thesis seeks to reveal, through the use of numerous case studies, the timekeeping processes that helped to make New Zealand. Whilst the period under review covers primarily the period 1840 to 1868 there is also a discussion of the emergence of clock time in thirteenth century Britain and Europe and its development through to the late nineteenth century. This is because the settlers‟ apprehension of time and their use of clocks and watches had evolved over the preceding centuries. The importance of reliable time was recognised by the Church from the medieval period but as ownership of public and private clocks proliferated the decentralisation of clock time commenced. Clock time commanded the lives of people and imprinted itself through the inculcation of such notions as punctuality and productivity. Better clocks brought a new emphasis to workplace efficiency underpinning the belief that time was money and facilitated the efficient coordination of Land, Labour and Capital. The discovery of New Zealand required timekeeping at sea. The achievements of James Cook, underpinned by improved chronometers, facilitated the large-scale British colonisation of New Zealand and seldom brought respite from the rule of time. Once on land, the settlers looked to establish a temporal order similar to Britain. The challenge to establish and disseminate the „true‟ local time within communities led to the setting up of observatories and the use of public clocks, time ball stations, bells and guns to signal clock time. The myriad of local times was not a problem at first but once the telegraph began to link communities they hindered its optimal efficiency. This led to the introduction of „telegraph time‟ in early 1868, dual time systems in communities using the telegraph, and public debate. Whilst most provinces accepted the new clock time, Otago saw it as an affront to their community‟s autonomy and identity. The province challenged the imposition of telegraph time, instigated a Parliamentary debate, and argued for the introduction of a common New Zealand time. Parliament‟s 1868 decision was a triumph for convenience and economic rationality over tradition and local identity. New Zealand was the first country entirely to abandon local times and regulate its time in relation to Greenwich mean time.

que se queira crítica / This thesis comprehensively approaches the poetry and prose works of the Romanian
poet Paul Celan, aiming to think about them from a reflection on writing and reading,
which ultimately moves toward a broader reflection on language. In this sense, the very
form of writing of this work – that departs from the reading of Celan’s speeches and
prose, as well as of his poems – is a fundamental problem for the thesis. This problem
is, at last, a methodological questioning that founds the faltering and undecidable way
through which the reading performs before the poet’s words. Divided into two main
parts – and subsequently distributed other several times: as meridians – the thesis
aims to provoke the stable instances of any writing that proposes to establish a
dialogue with poems. Thus, the thesis intends to think thouroughly the possibility of
relation with the other – art’s way and destiny –, a relation that is as inseparable as the
one concerning writing and reading, at the same time rethinking the very role of a
writing that longs to be critic
