Understanding Housekeeper's Perceived Labor Mobility and Job Satisfaction within the Hospitality Industry in Metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: The objective of this study was to understand domestic and foreign-born housekeeper's individual perceptions of labor mobility and job satisfaction related to their jobs within the hospitality industry. Literature regarding the bridging of tourism, immigration, and labor supply was addressed to expose broad conceptual frameworks that lead to the development of this study. More specifically, literature regarding labor mobility within tourism industries, migrant decision making, and barriers to mobility and immigration helped to construct a narrowed conceptual framework specific to hospitality labor in Phoenix, Arizona. Similar and previous studies focused on perceived labor mobility during significant economic or industry shifts. This study included the addition of a policy factor to help determine to what degree state policy change effected hospitality workers' perceived labor mobility. Arizona's recently passed and implemented legislative act SB1070 regards immigrant identification and employment, and enforcement of the act in the state of Arizona; this serves as the implicated policy change. Data were collected via on-site survey administered February to May 2011. An overall score was created for the five motivational dimensions: 1 — Status; 2 — Economic; 3 — Refugee; 4 — Entrepreneurial; and, 5 — Political using principle component factor analysis using a varimax rotation with Kaiser normalization. Theory and literature suggest that the economic advancement, status advancement, and the refugee orientation are effective explanatory variables for motivating a career move into the tourism industry. A total of 82 questionnaires were delivered and completed (N = 82), and none were eliminated. The statistically-determined Economic Dimension was characterized by eleven statements explained 51% of the variation and was the overwhelming motivational force. The average coded response for change in job satisfaction was very positive at .75. Ten features of changes in job satisfaction were used as the basis of the second measure of change in job satisfaction. The first Principle Component of the ten features of job satisfaction change explained 45% of the variation in these features and loadings were positive near or above 0.60 for all items. The relationship between variations in each of the measurements of change in job satisfaction and motivating factors was explored using regression analysis. The two dependent variables were Overall Change and First Principle Component, and the independent variables for both regressions included the four motivating factors as measured by the rotated factors scores to represent dimensions of Economic, Status, Refugee and Entrepreneurial. In addition to the motivational factors, four demographic variables were included as independent variables to account for personal and situational differences. None of the regression coefficients were significant at even the 10% level. Although this result was expected, the positive sign of regression coefficients suggest that expectations of working as a housekeepers results in a positive outcome. Understanding this relationship further is necessary, and seeking larger sample sizes over a longer period of time would be most beneficial to this field of research. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Organização e estrutura na obra inicial do O.M.A. : 1972-1992

Carta, Humberto January 2018 (has links)
Rem Koolhaas and his Office for Metropolitan Architecture projects can be considered, without the risk of exaggeration, one of the most influential body of works of the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. Influential professionals in contemporary architecture worked at the office and learned from Koolhaas’s teachings, several magazines dedicate entire issues to his works, and his international recognition became indisputable after he was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2000. Although Koolhaas and his office were internationally recognized, the path that led to this recognition-from its foundation in 1972 to its first works being built and subsequent success with specialized critics in 1992-is relatively unknown, with most of the available material being spread out among different magazines. It is also noteworthy that the critics who analyze Koolhaas’s work projects tend to approach the work through its symbolic or socio-economic value, with a tendency to directly relate the biography of Koolhaas and his texts to the forms of his designs. This dissertation aims to organize, systematize and categorize information on the first two decades of OMA’s production — from 1972 to 1992, coinciding with the period covered by Koolhaas in his book S, M, L, XL. Through a formal analysis of his works, focusing on the different types of structure utilized in projects throughout the years, this dissertation intends to clarify the office’s transformation of design strategies and reaffirm the continuation of the modern tradition present in Koolhaas’s work.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM: ANTHROPOLOGY AND MUSEUM PRACTICES AT WORK

Hernandez, Michael David 01 August 2012 (has links)
This work focuses on the use of anthropological and museum theory, methods and practices in the development and construction of a museum. It also illustrates how museums can be used as active research sites for anthropologists. This dissertation uses the Hotel Metropolitan Museum, a new African American museum in Paducah, Kentucky, as an example to demonstrate this research process. I approach this work as a museum professional and academic making a living outside the safety of the "Ivory Tower." I examine how the use of anthropological theories, case studies and methods can be used to help independent consultants understand interpersonal interaction/communication, community development and political structure. Also, I examine how these theories and methods can be applied and/or modified to construct situations that result in outcomes beneficial to the consultant and to the group for which s/he is working.

Application of the Materials Management Concept to the Hospital Purchasing Organization

Vassar, John 05 1900 (has links)
Hospitals have increasingly come under close public scrutiny in the last several years because of the constantly escalating price of health care in the United States. It has been estimated that approximately 30 per cent of a typical hospital's operational budget is devoted to purchasing consumables plus the cost of materials support. The purpose of this study is to examine and compare materials management practices of selected individual hospitals in Texas Health Services Area 5 in order to determine the extent and manner in which they utilize the materials management concept. In addition, the investigation focuses on determining if there are any relationships between the variables of type of ownership, size and the extent to which the study hospitals utilize the materials management concept.

The morphodynamic phenomena in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR) is indeed the recurrent, because of geomorphological features, the geological substratum, pedogenic conditions and the climatic profile in the rainfall under, building a favorable environment for such events. Among the morphodynamic processes, the mass movements, highlighting the rotational landslides, which in this work are termed as landslides, are recurring during the rainy season. The study area comprises the Paulista chart (1: 25.000) SB.25-YC-VI, located in the northern portion of the RMR and groups territorial boundaries of the cities of Igarassu, Abreu e Lima, Paulista, Olinda, Recife and Camaragibe. The study insvetigou points of susceptibility to landslides, classificating them into three levels of susceptibility: low, medium and high. To this end, made use of the methodology of the Analytic Hierarchy Process or simply AHP that through pre-selected criteria, using a square matrix, which realize an analysis in pairs, culminating in a weight to each criterion. The criteria used were the geological compartiment, pedological aspects, the curvatures of the slopes, declivity and type of land use, totaling five criteria. However, there was advance the making of the map material of all criteria and turning them into raster, with a tax column titled weight. This occurred a subclassification the level of susceptibility (1 = low, 2 = average, 3 = high). Then there was the algebra between maps culminating of susceptibility map of Paulista chart (1: 25,000). To validate the map, demanded invested in the field aiming at more detailed understanding of each type of susceptibility, which occurred in two points to level of susceptibility (an urban point and other periurban). Once analyzed the data obtained in the field, they were compared to the map of susceptibility. It was found that the characteristics of the criteria of the investigated points were consistent with the previously made mapping. In addition to the sovereignty of the slope curvature and declivity on the other criteria. For the former, the features that the vertical profile presented concave or convex grouped to consistent horizontal geometry the same classification, translated more susceptible to landslides slopes, as in steepness levels to 11°. Mainly those wich are on the first level of the highest susceptibility, between 17° and 27° and higher. To the other criteria, which had lower weights, when presented high susceptibility rates, even not having a numerical prominence in weight for the final algebra, when it was found together in two or three, on the investigated points, resulting on the increasement of the final susceptibility. Therefore, the susceptibility map drawn from the AHP provided reliable results wich was ratified after the analysis of the points that were classified in the ratings already found in the mapping. This resulted mainly in areas with low susceptibility, corresponding to 56.73% of the Paulista chart (1: 25.000). For the high and medium levels were 28.66% and 14.61%, respectively. The most spatializing of the lower level was linked to the few dissected Tablelands in the west and the Plains to the east.

This paper analyzes the evolution, between 1981 and 2008, of social inequality in metropolitan areas of Salvador, Recife and Fortaleza. First of all, the main structural causes of social inequality in Brazil are discussed: the land property concentration, the structure of labor market, social policies and regional question. The national overview supports the presentation of imbalances and potentialities of Northeastern macro area, as well as metropolitan specific that are places that has a relative backward on economic performance and a huge social debt, but they have, at the same time, modern and dynamic poles. Foment policies in 60's and 70's stimulate the development of metropolitan industrial sector and, since 2004, a great cover of social programs, the real increase in the national minimum wage and the growth of regular labor relationship contribute to social development. The proposal is start a new age of distributive development that is the promotion of a planified social and economic development. The performance of social inequality in Northeast is identified by the study of social and occupational structure, that withdraw with the economic stagnation on 90's and, since 2004, results in a great reduction of poverty people because the increase in governmental programs. Nevertheless, there are not effective mechanism to promote the social mobility. It is necessary the implementation of a development model able to promote a structure impact that results a reduction of social inequality / Doutorado / Economia Social e do Trabalho / Doutor em Desenvolvimento Economico
