Peeling Back the Layers:Studies in Stratification in 19th Century Mill Building

Jackson, Kerry M 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT: P.A.C.E. Theater is a non-profit performing arts group in the town of Easthampton, Massachusetts. The group’s desire to find and create a new working standard for artistic non-profits’ survival led them to purchase a 125,000 s.f. 19th century mill complex in town. Their goal is to convert the building into a community arts center with theaters, event spaces, dance studios and rehearsal studios while offering tenant space for additional local businesses such as cafes, restaurants, and offices. Some of the tenant space is also intended for multiple local non-profits in order that they can share their resources and cut their expenses even further. The bigger picture is to create a working model of self sustaining art non-profits which can more easily survive during difficult economic times. In order to bring this vision to fruition, I needed to form a workable plan for a very complicated building complex. The building (or I should say buildings) where built over the course of 150 years being added onto and subtracted from as the mill owners saw fit. This created a complex interior space filled with transition spaces via floor level changes, wall type changes, fenestration adaptations, and structural adaptations throughout the decades. The buildings are a collection of historical layers, or stratifications which have the potential to be uncovered in an “excavation” of the building. My thesis explores the process of understanding a building with these types of complexities and then addresses programming the space to create a logical, clear building plan for the end users. And lastly, I explore the stratification levels, or the archeology of the building and attempt to address its history in my design process.

CO S TÍM? Rekonverze průmyslového areálu, Brno - Obřany / WHAT TO DO? Conversion of industrial premises, Brno - Obřany

Pospíšilová, Markéta January 2011 (has links)
Urbanism In the proposal, I tried the maximum value of existing urban values ??and their emphasis. It is also about making the most of already constructed buildings. I try to revitalize, or. perform their reconversion. Given that the area is in such close contact with nature, I see no reason for there not to try to adequately build up the island. Recently here I am building nine houses, which I concentrated in a structure that shapes its scale and linked to the surrounding buildings polovesnickou, yet is clearly modern. His height makes a "base" significant building mills. The area I was trying to understand what is already the best buildings, the traditional division of space into public spaces and squares, streets and private courtyards. And then the public buildings - solitary - in this case I am referring to the former mill. These classic elements I was trying to recover its proposal and its new structure they build. My next goal was to increase the permeability of the site so that it no longer perceived as complex, but as part of the city. So I connected the shore at ST. John of Nepomuk pedestrian bridge to the island. Spinning or school of architecture Also in the reconstruction of former mills, I thought so - and maximize value to emphasize the already existing buildings and try to understand their logic. On it, then follow a similar mentality when it denies the old new, but nor irrational nezbožšťuje. Boarding school, I allowed the two opposing sides - first from a bridge, and from the square on the island. From the bridge, I tried to maintain access to the laundry room as a bridge, because it is still building separate from the Bridge and it is still clear that he stands on the island. In bridge, I extend the sidewalk at the expense of the road. I realized that the spinning staircase located outside their volume and even the fact that I tried to respond - I have a new escape staircase is also located outside the mill. To do school "with one heart" as I have already described in the essay, I cut through the spinning in the middle of the floor (without the girders and ribs) and I created Respirium with which all space optically interconnected. The beauty of the existing structure will stand out best in the area of ??integrity. But as for teaching and teachers are even separate rooms, I decided to preserve as much unity in the ground - that is accessible to the public, and then on the fourth floor, which in itself is beautiful and will inspire students here who will form his studio work. There is a facility serving the public - library, exhibition details. On the second floor, then follow the stairs in respirium hall with cloakroom, conference room, administration, classrooms and offices. On the third floor, only the classrooms and offices, pattern shop and computer lab. The top floor of the studios are split only low walls and toilets and kitchens in addition to repeating in each floor there are even showers.

A study of administrative factors in establishing an outdoor education program for Mill Valley

Lovvorn, William Edward 01 January 1958 (has links) (PDF)
The writer's interest in outdoor education is based on a college major in Physical Education, two years as director of a day camp in the Los Angeles area, and ten years of experience as a school administrator. During this time, interest developed in the possibilities of outdoor education as a means of providing many direct learning experiences not possible in the regular classroom. The writer thus becomes especially interested in the possibility of providing a program that would more nearly meet the needs of young people than is possible through traditional classroom procedures. Extending learning to the out-of-doors through a well-planned and directed outdoor education program seemed to offer many opportunities for enriching the school curriculum. The more realistic schools become in their attempt to equip individuals for life, the more they realize the inadequacy of the traditional school environment. Many limitations imposed by tradition are being removed through revised procedures and methods of instruction. There remains certain limitations, however, of the school environment itself, such as lack of direct contact with nature and lack of opportunities for certain types of human relationships which are more nearly possible through group living. Modern educators believe that many of these limitations may be removed by extending education to an out-of-door environment by making camping experiences a part of the regular school curriculum. The conclusion was reached that one of the important reasons for the delay in acceptance of outdoor education as a part of the regular school program was due to the fact that administrators, who sooner or later must assume the responsibility for initiating new programs in education, need more information concerning methods of getting an outdoor education program started. Such administrative factors as financing, selecting a staff, planning a program, providing for health and safety, selecting a, camp site, and others, are real problems that must be faced by those who are contemplating the establishment of an outdoor education program.

Vårdinge Folkets Hus / Vårdinge People's House

Skogström, Carl January 2021 (has links)
Vårdinge People's House is a proposal for a new community centre in Vårdinge Kyrkby, between Mölnbo and Gnesta. Two different functions meet in the building, a production with a mill and bakery, and a people's house with an auditorium and meeting room. The space and the connection between them has guided the construction of the house. A central continuous room separates and unites the two nuclei of function and follows up the axis from the entrance of the church, into the house of the people, and down towards the water. The building is further opened up with passages that cross the main axis and create secondary private movements. Everything is surrounded by the same roof and secure foundation wall. The long table and the oven will be central points in Vårdinge People's House with the aim of creating a place for the village to unite and to create an incubator that makes the village more resilient to the changes of the rural area.

New Design of Hot Strip Mill Runout Table

Kratky, Miroslav 03 1900 (has links)
The work presented herein describes the production of hot strip with special attention to the runout table. Because of its high capital and operating costs, a new principle in conveying the strip using an air cushion and a new cooling system for strip cooling have been proposed. Information given here is nearly all from available literature and the author's own experience with Hot Strip Mill production problems. To support the idea of using an air cushion for strip conveying, experimental equipment was designed and built which confirmed the feasibility of the method. A new cooling system was also proposed to meet the ever increasing requirements for better mechanical properties of hot strip. Runout table design application may serve as a guideline in designing new Hot Strip Mill runout table. / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

Inhabiting the Uninhabited

Witkowski, Jakub January 2020 (has links)
This project is located in Piotrkow Trybunalski in central Poland. This region of Poland is known for its cotton production and industrial work  throughout the 19th and 20th century. The city is located close to Lodz which is the second largest city in Poland and its industrial heartland. The region is also known for being the main hotbed of Partisan resistance during the German and Russian occupation of WW2. These soldiers hid for years inside the forests of the region and defended many villages from being exterminated by the Nazi forces. Therefore, this project inhabits an old cotton mill which has been out of use for the last 50 years and houses a museum and archive dedicated to remembering the history of the region. Focusing on the Partisan movement in the area.
