Jah children the experience of Rastafari children in South Africa as members of a minority group with particular reference to communities in the former Cape ProvinceBain, Pauline January 2004 (has links)
This thesis is an ethnography of Rastafari childhood in the former Cape Province, South Africa, through the eyes of both parents and children. If children are a ‘muted group’, then what are the identity formation implications for “double-muted” groups, the children of ethnic minorities whose voices are not heard? Rasta parents’ experience of the struggle, ie. the opposition to apartheid, has shaped the Rastafari chant of ‘equal rights’ and ‘justice’ into a distinctly South African form of protest and resistance. Their childhood experiences have resulted in a desire to provide a better life for their children, using Rastafari as a vehicle. This is expressed in a continuation of the struggle that was started during apartheid, in the Rasta ideology children grow up learning. The Rasta child has become a contested body in this struggle. The South African Government, through policy, has a mandate to protect the child, and legislature exists to do so in accordance with international law. However, as child-raising differs phenomenally from culture to culture, these goals on the part of the State start infringing upon the rights and freedoms of minorities to raise their children according to their own cultural goals. This study examines the tension between Rastafari and government with regards to child raising, specifically looking at the following main points of contestation: public health, public schools and policy/legislation; in order to examine how Rasta children negotiate their identity in the face of these conflicting messages and struggles. Their identity can be influenced by three main groups, the Rasta family they grow up in; school; and multi-media. What these children choose to accept or reject in their worldview is moderated by their own agency. This study shows that this tension results in a new generation of Rastafari children, who are strongly grounded in an identity as Rastafari and take pride in this identity. It also illustrates how Rastafari are impacting on and changing government policy through resistance. Their successes in challenging the state on the grounds of multiculturalism and religious freedom, has helped in the attainment of a sense of dignity.

Language and social services in rural North West the status of SetswanaNkashe, Esther January 2012 (has links)
This study seeks to support the thesis that African indigenous languages in South Africa should enjoy equal treatment in terms of the South African Constitution. Therefore, it will explore and find ways and means of how the South African government can reach out to rural communities with inadequate English proficiency, in an English-dominated South Africa, by breaking down the existing language barriers and curbing social inequalities. Language rights, like any other human rights, should be protected, as enshrined in the new democratic Constitution of South Africa.

Providing services for culturally diverse students in academic librariesKhoza, Thuli Francis 30 November 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of academic libraries in providing services to culturally diverse student populations. In this study the information needs and information-seeking behaviour of the culturally diverse students of the Technikon Witwatersrand were analysed. The study also tried to establish whether there are differences in information needs and information-seeking behaviour of various cultural groups.
The empirical investigation was conducted by means of focus group interviews and a questionnaire survey on a sample of undergraduate students of the Technikon Witwatersrand. There were assumptions that African students have limited experience in using the academic library, have no computer and information handling skills and might have language difficulties. Therefore, the expectation was that African students might have problems in the use of the academic library. However, the results of the empirical study show that English and Afrikaans speaking students are experiencing more problems than African students. / Information Science / M.Inf.

In search of the absent voice : the status of indigenous languages in post-apartheid South Africa / The status of indigenous languages in post-apartheid South AfricaCakata, Zethu 11 1900 (has links)
Even though language formed part of the post-apartheid agenda which was set out to redress the ills of the pre-democratic South Africa, there are still concerns that the status of indigenous languages has not been elevated. Using decolonial work of Steve Biko, Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Frantz Fanon as theoretical lens, I aimed at exploring perceptions of key informants on post-apartheid language policies, young South Africans and parents /guardians toward indigenous languages. In-depth and narrative interviews were used to collect data from language policy key informants and young South Africans who started schooling after 1994 and focus group discussions with parents/guardians were held. Thematic, narrative and discourse analyses were used to analyse the data. Indigenous languages were perceived by participants as having an inferior status compared to languages of oppression and that was attributed to inferiority complex, lack of will from government to promote these languages and absent voice of indigenous language speakers in the fight for the status of indigenous languages. South Africa’s language diversity was also perceived as a challenge believed to contribute toward the difficulty of properly implementing post-apartheid language policies. The study results suggest a need for a stronger civil society which would assist in the dismantling of categorising languages as superior and inferior. Furthermore, the results point to a need for a more humanising approach which treats indigenous languages with respect. / Psychology / D. Phil. (Psychology)

Buisplaas: ‘n histories-analitiese ondersoek na die ontstaan en voortbestaan van ‘n minderheidsgemeenskap in die Wes-Kaap vanaf 1863 tot 2018 / Buisplaas: a historical- analytical investigation into the origin and continued existence of a minority community in the Western Cape from 1863 until the presentLe Roux, Antoinette 11 1900 (has links)
Hierdie gemeenskap is Buisplaas.
This thesis describes the background of the pre-colonial situation in the Cape Colony of the time. It uses the historical origin and development of one specific community as an example. The relationship which developed between this community and the intrusive colonialists is based to a large extent on perceptions and attitudes which were observed in the seventeenth and eighteenth but especially during the nineteenth century between the diverse population groups. The interference of the colonialists caused great harm to these relationships and consequently some of the indigenous population groups underwent radical changes. The indigenous population’s role in the area became more and more submersed and the landscape changed forever. As the territories of the indigenous groups were taken from them, they had to change their survival strategies drastically.
The group which in former times was called ‘coloured’ because of inter marriages between the colonialists and the local population or the imported slaves, was soon reduced to labourers and their status diminished as time went by. In spite of very few being able to remain as landowners this thesis shows that there were exceptions. There is a community which inherited land next to the Gouritz River and after 155 years they are still the rightful owners. This community is known as Buisplaas.
A white ancestor, Frederick du Buis left his two sons, Simson and Saul who were of mixed blood, 94 hectares of land next to the Gouritz River, in the south eastern part of the Western Cape. This is where the Buis community came into being and through the many years of political change in South Africa they continued to remain and develop there. The harsh geography and climate of Buisplaas had its limitations and yet the community survived. They used the meagre possibilities of the area like their proximity to the Gouritz River and the aloes growing there to their benefit. Although the economic realities forced many of the inhabitants to move elsewhere to further their studies or to find work opportunities, the Buisplaas descendants often returned to their community after retirement.
It was only 127 years after Simson and Saul Buis inherited Buisplaas that development and consequently improvement started happening on a bigger scale. It changed their quality of life immensely. In 1986 the Residents’ Association of Buisplaas was formed and its role in the development of the community forms the major part of this study. Over the years both the Lutheran and the Anglican churches had a very strong influence on the inhabitants, especially since the Lutheran church was responsible for the establishment of a primary school at Buisplaas.
The research entailed a multi-faceted approach, but mostly historical methodology was used. The active participation of different members of the Buisplaas community as well as some of the former inhabitants and neighbours in this thesis, supplemented the use of various other sources. The focus of the study was on the Buisplaas community who had been land owners as so-called ‘coloured’ people long before the issues and problems of owning land in South Africa were addressed.
Although the basic realities of survival of this community will be addressed, the main focus is on the emotional bonds of the people with their place, with their property. It deals with their memories and with the cultural traditions that form the backbone of the area. This study has a charm which is revealed because of the memories of the people and the omnipresent consciousness of the ownership of their special place. Place becomes an extension of the self because place and space are also where human ties exist. It doesn’t make the place perfect but it remains a place where the people have always been aware of one another. The changing political and economic dynamics of the area have an influence on the importance and meaning of this place for its inhabitants. The physical and spatial environment and its spiritual importance also influence the interaction and relationships between these people. / History / D. Litt. et Phil. (Geskiedenis)

The language, identity and intercultural communication of the Shona living among Xhosa communities in Cape TownMambambo, John 11 1900 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 253-298 / This study examines the language, identity and intercultural communication dynamics in the
Xhosa communities of Cape Town where some immigrant Shona speakers dwell. Language is a
complex and nuanced repertoire of culture and the choice of language constitutes part of an
individual’s identity construction. Owing to these identity dynamics, the Shona speakers resident
among the Xhosa communities find themselves entangled in the politics of belonging and identity
that define the Shona-Xhosa immigrant landscape in Cape Town. The Shona speakers engaging
in intercultural communication in Xhosa communities are confronted with language and cultural
hurdles. Orbe’s Co-cultural Theory among others was central to the unpacking of the intricacies
of culture and the Xhosa hegemony. Results show that Shona people speak Xhosa for social
acceptance and to secure economic benefits. Nevertheless, this seems not to offer them profound
indulgence with the Xhosa culture. Even if they comprehend the culture, their Shona cultural
identity hampers their full admission into the Xhosa culture. This lack of cultural acceptance
leaves the Shona speakers alienated from both Xhosa and Shona cultures. In that regard, Shona
speakers among Xhosa communities in Cape Town live a fluid life in which relentless cultural
change is the only constant. This transitory life promotes intercultural concession in the personal
layer of self, leading to the emergence of a hybrid multicultural self-concept. The study thus
contributes towards scholarship by revealing that the differences in individual linguistic
circumstances in the process of intercultural negotiation appear to produce different levels of
acquisition of the Xhosa culture and Xhosa by the Shona speakers. This is corroborated by the
fact that Shona speakers who could not speak English learnt Xhosa faster than those who could
speak English. This study argues that the maintenance of the Shona language by its speakers in
Xhosa communities is as much their duty, as it is their right. Ultimately, the study posits that
ethnocentrism stifles the intercultural communication process and leads to tiffs in multicultural
communities / Linguistics and Modern Languages / D. Phil. (Languages, Linguistics and Literature)
