The Effects of Mode Vividness in Mobile Advertising when Presented in the Context of Consumer Goals and Product Involvement.

Lim, Allen January 2012 (has links)
The two primary objectives for this thesis are (1) to understand the effectiveness of different types of mobile phone based advertisements and (2) to identify if the amount of time users spent viewing an advertisement can be used as a measure of advertising effectiveness. To achieve these objectives, this study first conducted qualitative studies consisting of a focus group with consumers and an interview with a mobile advertising technology provider. Qualitative study results identified the following variables of interest; vividness of the advertisement, product involvement, and consumer goals. Supported by existing literature on advertising, these variables were then used to develop a conceptual model outlining the relationship between the variables and measures of advertising effectiveness. To empirically examine this model, this study conducted a 3x2x4 experiment of high, medium and low advertisement mode vividness, high and low product involvement and four stages of pre-purchase consumer goals. A total of 288 responses were collected from a student sample from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. The dependence relationships outlined in the conceptual model were then analysed using ANCOVA, logistic regression, linear regression, and various other non-parametric analysis techniques. The results of this study suggest that level of advertisement mode vividness and product involvement both exert a strong influence on the effectiveness of the advertisement. However, results on consumer goals suggest that the effectiveness of the advertisement is only affected by whether a consumer goal existed before viewing the advertisement. This study was unable to identify any relationship between the effectiveness of an advertisement and the amount of time users spent viewing an advertisement on a mobile phone.

Modelling the factors that influence black Generation Y students' attitudes towards mobile advertising / Kirsty-Lee Sharp

Sharp, Kirsty-Lee January 2013 (has links)
The rapid growth in mobile communication in South Africa makes it an important new advertising medium, and that is why an understanding of attitudes towards mobile advertising is important. As the most technologically astute generation, the Generation Y cohort (individuals born between 1986 and 2005) represents an important current and future market segment for digital media, including mobile media. In South Africa, black African make up the majority of the Generation Y cohort (hereinafter referred to as black Generation Y). Given the size of the black Generation Y market segment in South Africa, and the potential earning power and influential role of those with a tertiary qualification, a need was identified to propose and empirically test a model of possible antecedents that may determine attitudes towards mobile advertising amongst black Generation Y students. The sampling frame for the study included black Generation Y students aged between 18 and 24 who were registered at South Africa’s 23 public registered higher education institutions (HEIs). This sampling frame was narrowed down, using judgement sampling, to three HEI campuses situated in the Gauteng province – one from a comprehensive university, one from a traditional university and one from a university of technology. Lecturers at each of the campuses were contacted and asked if they would allow a questionnaire to be distributed to their students during class time. A convenience sample of 600 students across these three campuses was taken in 2013. Self-administered questionnaires, designed to measure the antecedents influencing black Generation Y students’ attitudes towards mobile advertising, were hand delivered to students during class time at each of the three campuses. The statistical analysis of the collected data included exploratory factor analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis and structural equation modelling. The findings of the study suggest that South African black Generation Y students have a strong positive attitude towards advertising in general, and towards communicating using the SMS function. Moreover, they have a positive attitude towards the value of mobile advertising. It appears that they find mobile advertisements to be intrusive, and do not perceive mobile advertisements to have much entertainment value, which may account for them not having an overall positive attitude towards mobile advertising. Attitude towards advertising and credibility were found to have a significant direct influence on black Generation Y students’ perceived value of mobile advertising, which in turn has a significant direct influence on black Generation Y students’ overall attitude towards mobile advertising. Personalisation and in formativeness have a significant positive influence on credibility. Entertainment, attitudes towards advertising, control and credibility have a significant positive influence on the perceived value of mobile advertising. Intrusiveness has a significant negative influence on overall attitudes towards mobile advertising, while trust and perceived value have a significant positive influence. This study will contribute to developing a profile of the consumer behaviour of the black Generation Y student in South Africa concerning their attitude towards mobile advertising. This research study aimed to develop a conceptual model to illustrate the antecedents that influence black Generation Y students’ attitudes towards mobile advertising. The findings of this study will act as marketing strategy guidelines for marketers seeking to reach this segment through mobile advertising. The findings of this study will be of value to South African marketers, as well as international advertisers, seeking to target this lucrative market segment. / PhD (Marketing Management), North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2014

Mobiltelefonin, det sjunde massmediet : Mobiltelefonens lämplighet som relationsmarknadsföringskanal.

Eriksson, Daniel, Andersson, Fredrik January 2009 (has links)
This thesis is dealing with mobile marketing and the aim is to answer the question: how suitable is the mobile phone as a relationship marketing channel. We have located the methods that are most common to deliver the marketing message and we are comparing them with the criteria’s that we found necessary for creating relationships. In order to determine these methods and criteria’s we’ve been conducting interviews with people working in this business, both Swedish mobile network operators and employees from Nordic mobile marketing firms. We have been using existing models from relationship marketing to create our own framework in order to determine the strength of mobile marketing as a relationship creating market channel. Our study shows that mobile marketing if used in the right way can be used in order to establish long-lasting, mutual and profitable relations. The method that fulfilled most of the criteria’s was application. The other methods that we investigated are more suitable to be used as complement to other tools. Our investigation also shows that the mobile marketing market is immature and technical issues, knowledge transfer and standards have to be established in order to create a breakthrough for the mobile phone as a tool for relationship marketing.</p>

Smartphone Apps on the Mobile Web: An Exploratory Case Study of Business Models

Ford, Caroline Morgan 05 May 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to explore the business strategies of a firm seeking to develop and profitably market a mobile smartphone application to understand how small, digital entrepreneurships may build sustainable business models given substantial market barriers. Through a detailed examination of one firm’s process to try to commercialize their mobile app, we identify various business model decisions and marketing strategy approaches that hindered the company’s efforts. The case study describes two distinctly different business models adopted in succession, as well as the various adjustments the firm makes to its target market, distribution and pricing approach that led to their current strategy. This research looks closely at business-to-business-to-consumer distribution arrangement for mobile apps and in doing so challenges the rising positive bias that exists for the app store as the dominant actor in the mobile value chain. For practice, this paper suggests unanticipated hurdles small digital entrepreneurs may face if they rely heavily on mobile advertising and the app store to launch and sustain their business.

Consumer attitudes toward mobile advertising : A study of the Dutch youth.

Ramnarain, Manishka, Kamphuis, Kirsten January 2012 (has links)
Purpose: To study the Dutch youth’s perceptions on and attitudes toward mobile advertising. Background: Consumers are living within a media saturated environment, which limits the effectiveness of advertising. This has led to advertising clutter, most prevalent in traditional mass media. The advertising clutter has resulted in marketers moving their advertising focus toward less cluttered mediums, such as mobile advertising. Mobile advertising allows companies to specifically target the right consumers by looking at age, gender and geographic regions etc. Being able to advertise to such a specified target group is an advantage for companies, however the question remaining is how consumers perceive this form of specific targeting advertising. Method: In this research the deductive approach has been implemented in order to answer the research questions. Both qualitative and quantitative data has been collected through a questionnaire and focus group. The statements used in the questionnaire are based on previous studies and theories. The data retrieved through the questionnaire has been analysed using SPSS. Conclusion: The results of this study showed the Dutch youth mainly sees the originality, interactivity and entertainment levels of mobile advertising as positive in comparison to traditional forms of advertising. Furthermore, message content was shown to be an important factor in order for the consumer to perceive the advertising as positive. The main aggravating attributes that come with mobile advertising are the perceived risks, like receiving too many advertising messages. Furthermore it was found that the more positive the attitude toward advertising in general is, and the more the consumer likes searching for product information, the more positive the attitude toward mobile advertising will be. The main purpose of this research was to find out what the attitudes of the Dutch youth are toward mobile advertising. The statistical results showed a negative attitude toward mobile advertising. However, the qualitative results showed that when mobile advertising is used in a proper way, consumers’ attitudes can be positive.

Mobile Display Advertising and Consumer Privacy : Mobile Ad Networks approach to Privacy, and their pointof view

Helander, Fredrik January 2010 (has links)
Research question: To what extent is mobile/SMS advertising privacy norms, associated with permission, relevance and control, applied to mobile display advertising contexts by mobile ad networks? How is this motivated? Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to work as an initial step in the process of establishing what privacy norms that should be applied by mobile ad networks in mobile display advertising contexts. Insights generated, regarding potential impacts of the rapid development within the mobile advertising industry on how privacy issues are handled by mobile ad networks, are desired outcomes. Such outcomes could then potentially be used as a foundation for future research within the field. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this study is based on previous research regarding mobile/SMS advertising. Methodology: I have applied a qualitative research strategy and an inductive research approach. Furthermore an interpretivistic epistemological position was taken and a constructionist ontological position. The research is designed as a multiple case study. The sample consists of the two mobile ad networks Ericsson and Inmobi. The companies were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Results: Based on the findings, my answer to the research question is that mobile/SMS advertising privacy norms associated with permission relevance and control is only partly applied in mobile display advertising contexts. The reasons for applying/not applying the norms are all reasonable. There is no doubt about that the ad networks acts are greatly influenced by wanting to uphold consumer privacy. Established through the findings in this study is that the change within the mobile advertising industry, associated with new forms of advertising being available for advertisers through the medium and what information that is being collected about consumers, do have an effect on what privacy norms that are being applied. I view this as the main scientific contribution of this study.

Attitude is everything : towards social media mobile advertising

Fingalsson, Linn, Palma, Katalina, Sheri, Sindi January 2015 (has links)
Purpose: To explore what are the consumers’ attitudes towards mobile advertising in a social media context. Research questions: What are the consumers’ attitudes towards entertainment, credibility, irritation and informativeness in mobile advertising? What are the consumers’ attitudes towards permission-based advertising and incentivebased advertising in mobile advertising in social media context? Theoretical framework: This study was based on theories that helped to understand what are the consumers’ attitudes towards mobile advertising, what are the attitudes towards the dimensions of mobile advertising and the types of mobile advertising. A model was presented in order to have a clear picture of the existing theories in this field. Methodology: The authors used a qualitative research and the method chosen for data collection was semi-structured interviews and a case study, Snapchat (mobile application). Conclusions: After this process the authors could conclude that consumers’ attitudes towards mobile advertising in social media were negative. The strongest feeling among consumers that would influence their attitudes was irritation. The consumers’ negative attitudes can be related to control. When giving them control their attitudes can be positive. Rewards can positively influence consumers’ attitudes as well. According to the findings in this study high rewards should be given to consumers in high engagement situations.
