Simulating the carbon cycling of croplands : model development, diagnosis, and regional application through data assimilation

Sus, Oliver January 2012 (has links)
In the year 2000, croplands covered about 12% of the Earth’s ice-free land surface. Through cropland management, humankind momentarily appropriates about 25% of terrestrial ecosystem productivity. Not only are croplands a key element of human food supply, but also bear potential in increased carbon (C) uptake when best-practice land management approaches are adopted. A detailed assessment of the impact of land use on terrestrial ecosystems can be achieved by modelling, but the simulation of crop C cycling itself is a relatively new discipline. Observational data on crop net ecosystem exchange (NEE) are available only recently, and constitute an important tool for model development, diagnosis, and validation. Before crop functional types (CFT) had been introduced, however, large-scale biogeochemical models (BGCM) lacked crop-specific patterns of phenology, C allocation, and land management. As a consequence, the influence of cropland C cycling on biosphere-atmosphere C exchange seasonality and magnitude is currently poorly known. To date, no regional assessment of crop C cycling and yield formation exists that specifically accounts for spatially and temporally varying patterns of sowing dates within models. In this thesis, I present such an assessment for the first time. In the first step (chapter 2), I built a crop C mass balance model (SPAc) that models crop development and C allocation as a response to ambient meteorological conditions. I compared model outputs against C flux and stock observations of six different sites in Europe, and found a high degree of agreement between simulated and measured fluxes (R2 = 0.83). However, the model tended to overestimate leaf area index (LAI), and underestimate final yield. In a model comparison study (chapter 3), I found in cooperation with further researchers that SPAc best reproduces observed fluxes of C and water (owed to the model’s high temporal and process resolution), but is deficient due to a lack in simulating full crop rotations. I then conducted a detailed diagnosis of SPAc through the assimilation of C fluxes and biometry with the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF, chapter 4), and identified potential model weaknesses in C allocation fractions and plant hydraulics. Further, an overestimation of plant respiration and seasonal leaf thickness variability were evident. Temporal parameter variability as a response to C flux data assimilation (DA) is indicative of ecosystem processes that are resolved in NEE data but are not captured by a model’s structure. Through DA, I gained important insights into model shortcomings in a quantitative way, and highlighted further needs for model improvement and future field studies. Finally, I developed a framework allowing for spatio-temporally resolved simulation of cropland C fluxes under observational constraints on land management and canopy greenness (chapter 5). MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data were assimilated both variationally (for sowing date estimation) and sequentially (for improved model state estimation, using the EnKF) into SPAc. In doing so, I was able to accurately quantify the multiannual (2000-2006) regional C flux and biometry seasonality of maize-soybean crop rotations surrounding the Bondville Ameriflux eddy covariance (EC) site, averaged over 104 pixel locations within the wider area. Results show that MODIS-derived sowing dates and the assimilation of LAI data allow for highly accurate simulations of growing season C cycling at locations for which groundtruth sowing dates are not available. Through quantification of the spatial variability in biometry, NEE, and net biome productivity (NBP), I found that regional patterns of land management are important drivers of agricultural C cycling and major sources of uncertainty if not appropriately accounted for. Observing C cycling at one single field with its individual sowing pattern is not sufficient to constrain large-scale agroecosystem behaviour. Here, I developed a framework that enables modellers to accurately simulate current (i.e. last 10 years) C cycling of major agricultural regions and their contribution to atmospheric CO2 variability. Follow-up studies can provide crucial insights into testing and validating large-scale applications of biogeochemical models.

A Comparison of Moderate Oral Sedation Drug Regimens for Pediatric Dental Treatment: A Pilot Study

Parikh, Ojas A 01 January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: Compare moderate oral sedation of pediatric patients using Hydroxyzine and Meperidine with either Diazepam or Midazolam in management of pediatric dental patients. Methods: Randomized, double-blind, crossover pilot study of patients 3 to 7 years of age requiring two sedation visits. Frankl and Houpt behavior scores recorded at injection time, initiation of treatment and 100% oxygen at end of treatment. Postoperative phone call surveys conducted within eight hours and within 24 hours of discharge. Wilcoxon Signed-Rank tests, Fisher’s Exact Chi-squared test and 0.10 significance level. Results: 25 subjects completed 35 sedations. Eight participants completed both treatments and demonstrated significantly higher total Houpt Scores with Diazepam at all treatment stages. Frankl scores favored Diazepam at injection time. More abnormal behavior was found with Midazolam, less memory of the visit with Diazepam, but longer sleep time with Diazepam. Conclusions: Sedation with the Hydroxyzine, Meperidine and Diazepam regimen may allow for a better overall sedation experience. Postoperative monitoring is essential. The results are promising and demonstrate the value of a larger study on sedation with Diazepam.

The Republicans’ civil war: Dwight D. Eisenhower and the fight to halt conservatism, 1952–1969

Cantone, Amy Elizabeth January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of History / Derek S. Hoff / In the years immediately after World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower insisted that he did not want to run for office. However, the general, persuaded by the efforts of Citizens for Eisenhower groups, reversed his decision before the 1952 election. The new politician did not take an easy path to the White House, however, as Senator Robert Taft of Ohio, the leading conservative Republican, fought to represent the GOP. Eisenhower aligned with the moderate faction, the party’s traditional source of power, and joined the Republicans during the early stages of a civil war in the party. From the time Eisenhower received the presidential nomination in 1952 until his death in 1969, he committed himself to leading the GOP and establishing moderate, not conservative, Republicanism as the party’s ideology. However, this aspect of Eisenhower’s political career has largely been ignored by historians. The analyses of Eisenhower that focus on his presidency, rather than his military career, concentrate on policy decisions, omitting the president’s role as party leader during a transformative era. This oversight not only skews Eisenhower’s legacy but also renders analyses of the conservative revolution in American politics incomplete. Before conservative Senator Barry Goldwater secured the Republican nomination in 1964, a very important moment that augured —but did not guarantee — the future triumph of the conservative wing, Eisenhower worked to stop his campaign. Had Eisenhower succeeded, the GOP and American politics could have followed a much different trajectory in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Utilizing documents from throughout Eisenhower’s political career, this study argues that although Eisenhower failed to halt conservatism, he influenced the course of the GOP. During the 1950s and 1960s, Eisenhower helped revitalize the party, improved the party’s organization, and contributed to conservatism’s delayed ascendancy. Furthermore, Eisenhower merits recognition as a party leader who worked tirelessly on behalf of moderate Republicanism, not just as a man with impressive coattails for Republicans to cling to during elections.

Apriority in Naturalized Epistemology: Investigation into a Modern Defense

Christiansen, Jesse Giles 28 November 2007 (has links)
Versions of naturalized epistemology that overlook or reject apriority ignore innate belief-forming processes that provide much of the grounding for epistemic warrant. A rigorous analysis reveals that non-experiential ways of viewing apriority, such as innateness, establish the domain for a plausible naturalistic theory of a priori warrant. A moderate version of naturalistic epistemology that embraces the non-experiential feature of apriority and motivates future cognitive scientific research is the preferred account.

Can resistance training reach moderate exercise intensity in older adults and overweight adults?

Bharti, Neha 28 May 2015 (has links)
Problem: Mostly attributed to lack of time, only about 15% of Canadian adults are currently reaching the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines (CPAG). Recently, studies have suggested that any bout of aerobic exercise reaching moderate to vigorous intensity has the potential to improve health. Methods: Sixty adults (20 young non-overweight adults, 20 overweight adults, 20 older adults) already doing some resistance training (RT) were recruited. Participants performed eight RT exercises during three visits. The objective was to identify the proportion of time spent at moderate to vigorous intensity during RT sessions. Results: Overall, the participants were at moderate to vigorous intensity during 82% of the time. However, the older adult group compared to the young adult group spent lower proportion of time at moderate to vigorous intensity during RT sessions. Conclusion: Most Canadian adults can reach HR equivalent to those achieved during moderate to vigorous aerobic activity by doing RT.

Limited Equity Cooperatives : an alternative method for the development of low to moderate income housing

Trachtenberg, Gail P. 21 November 2013 (has links)
The cost of housing is rising disproportionately to income throughout the country. Alternative methods of providing low to moderate income housing are always being sought to offset the gap created by the varying rates of growth between the cost of housing and income. The purpose of this professional report is to examine the Limited Equity Cooperative (LEC) which by simple definition generally limits the resale value of member shares to maintain affordability over time. This report looks at the specifics the LEC to determine how it can by used to provide a viable solution to an overall shortage for low to moderate income households through an hypothetical test cased using 2007 data for the Metropolitan Boston area. / text
