Women's Work: Materializing Feminist Thought in Lucy Lippard's c.7,500 Exhibition

Felicella, Francesca 01 January 2019 (has links)
This thesis aims to explore the c.7,500 exhibition curated by Lucy Lippard as a culminating point for Lippard's activism in the arts, and more specifically, women's representation in conceptualism. Understanding Lippard's political involvement within the arts and the networks established before c.7,500 further illuminates the activist approach of an all-women's art show. Throughout Lippard's career, she has advanced the exposure of women artists through her curatorial endeavors and written criticism. Her Numbers series is continuously referenced today though little documentation of each show has been easily accessible. By looking at ephemeral artifacts and artworks from c.7,500 I aim to establish a collective analysis of the show in relation to second-wave feminism while simultaneously highlighting the significance of women in conceptualism. The unique nature of c.7,500 is best understood through the experimental index cards used to curate and organize the exhibition. Analyzing select physical items from the exhibition highlights both the material elements in the show while also lending women artists perspective on an array of topics such as labor, domesticity, land, space, and time. The synthesizing of activism, art, curation, and writing are exemplified in c.7,500 which consisted of artists from a variety of statuses. Lippard's main objective in her practice was to expose the works of underrepresented artists and through this analysis, I aim to do the same. Discussing selected artworks from the exhibition I connect feminist activism and ideology to the experiences and concerns of women artists creating conceptual artworks in the 1970s.

ASIAN AMERICAN IDENTITY IN DRAMA AND THEIR FOUR WAVES: BEYOND IDENTITY CRISIS TOWARD FLUID IDENTITY

Sohn, Yoon Mi 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This study examines Asian American identity construction in drama exercised by Asian American theatre companies on the mainland from the 1970s to the present. I use the term “wave” for the classification of the plays to illuminate artistic movements. The plays are classified into four waves: the first wave in the 1970s, the second wave in the 1980s, the third wave in the 1990s and early 2000s, and the fourth wave since the 2000s. The characters’ self-identification in these plays varies over time in response to historical, socio-political, economic, and cultural circumstances. Through chronological exploration, this dissertation articulates that Asian American self-identification and representation have developed from a rigid identity pursuing a single, coherent identity to a fluid identity beyond the binary frame by embracing other contingent and salient factors of identity. In addition, my dissertation illuminates that more dramatists use non-realist styles, especially in the third and the fourth waves, to reflect the American perception of anti-Asian racism and Asian American internalized racism. The illustration of Asian American dynamics that strive to form and evolve their identities challenges racial discourses and myths, opposing stereotypes.

The Exhibitionary Complex : Exhibition, Apparatus, and Media from Kulturhuset to the Centre Pompidou, 1963–1977

West, Kim January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation traces the history of a diagram. The diagram shows four circles of gradually diminishing sizes, lodged one inside the other, like the layers of a circular or spherical body. For a group of artists, curators, architects, and activists centered around Moderna Museet in Stockholm between the mid-1960s and the mid-1970s, the diagram represented a new type of museum: a museological Information Center modeled on the computer, operating as a site for radically democratic social experiments. The four layers stood for different functions: information capture, processing, interface, storage; or, put differently: social spaces and media resources, workshop floors, exhibition facilities, collection. Through close readings of a series of exhibitions and institutional projects in Sweden, the US, and France, this dissertation follows the development of this diagram: its prehistory and formulation, its different implementations, and its direct and indirect effects. It studies Moderna Museet’s original, unrealized project for Kulturhuset in Stockholm, according to which the museum should project its dynamic energies across the city center, serving as a “catalyst for the active forces in society”. It discusses the museum’s confrontation with digital technologies in the late 1960s, through pioneering museological organizations such as the Museum Computer Network in New York. It analyzes the exhibition formats developed in correspondence with the notion of the museum as a “vast experimental laboratory” and a “broadcasting station”: the exhibition as critical information pattern, as tele-commune. And it studies the diagram’s afterlife as one of the models informing the Centre Pompidou in Paris, during that project’s early phases. The Exhibitionary Complex reads these endeavors and visions as attempts to devise a critical understanding of the exhibitionary apparatus in relation to new information environments and media systems. It sheds light on a largely forgotten aspect of the exhibitionary, museological, and cultural history of the late twentieth century, in Sweden and internationally. But it also seeks to establish new models for grasping the exhibition’s singularity and potentials as a cultural and media technological form, in relation to the emergence of new information networks, as they exert increasing control over social, cultural, and political existence. / Space, Power, Ideology

Girardi, Mauricio January 2017 (has links)
In this study is proposed to explore the concepts of Modern and Contemporary Physics through physical phenomena present on stellar physics, using the Stellarium software as a tool on the development of activities related to the collective construction of a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (H-R diagram), which is a very important diagram in Astrophysics for the classification of stars. Based on Lev S. Vygotsky’s theory, it is proposed that the students work collaboratively in groups, both in obtaining astrophysical parameters of the stars using the software, as in the construction of a H-R diagram. According to the Vygotsky’s theory, the software can help on the process of mediation, while it also fultfils the role of bringing technology into classroom as a learning resource. Electromagnetic spectrum, blackbody radiation, energy quantization, luminosity, color and temperature, according to radiation wavelength are some of the Modern and Contemporary Physics concepts approached. These concepts are included on the program of Physics at schools, but they sometimes are not taught, or in many occasions are studied in an isolated, decontextualized manner. The project was conducted on a High School second grade class with 31 students at Colégio Estadual Piratini, in Porto Alegre – RS, during six classes (three of 100 minutes and three of 150 minutes), between October and December, 2016. As a result of this study, a didactical sequence is presented to the Physics teacher intending to suggest possible ways of approaching the Modern and Contemporary Physics concepts through Astronomy and Astrophysics, in a collective process, intermediated by the use of softwares, specially the Stellarium software.

Influences de la poésie moderne française sur la poésie contemporaine persane : étude de l’oeuvre de Nâderpour, Honarmandi et Eslâmi-e Nodouchane / The influences of modern French poetry on modern and contemporary Persian poetry : study of the works of Nader Naderpour, Hassan Honarmandi and Mohammad Ali Eslami- e Nodouchan

Sarrafian, Chahab 15 June 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, we have tried to show the influence of modern French poetry on three contemporary Iranians poets: Nâder Nâderpour, Hassan Honarmandi and Mohammad Ali Eslâmai-e Nodouchane. They have studied at Sorbonne University. Since the period of Mashroutiat or constitutional monarchy the modern poets like Nimâ have written the poems in “vers libres” following the French models. The Iranians, always attached to classical forms, didn’t like this form of “vers libres”. The role of theses three poets has been to prepare the ground to make accept “le vers libre” by the Iranian readership. These poets are grouped in semi-traditional group and they use the images and the themes of the modern French poetry, they have prepared the ground so that “le vers libres” will be well accepted in Iran. They have chosen, in the most of their poems, the continual quatrains “les quatrains continus”. They have tried to use the themes and the images that come principally from the poetry of Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine, Valéry, Prévert….These poets are considered like à “bridge” by which the Iranian cross the classical poetry to arrive to modern Persian poetry. They have sometimes changed the place of the rhymes following the French models. Sometimes they have integrated the “tercets”, “quintils” and “sizains” in their poetry among their “quatrains” and this can be considered as a French influence.

Preserving Queer Legacies in Archives and Art

Carroll, Michael Jeffrey January 2019 (has links)
Queer artists have engaged archives throughout modern and contemporary American art, but art historical discourse of their work has centered the writing of Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault to theorize these spaces without considering archival scholarship. This text takes up Gabriel Martinez’s Archive series as a case study to critique archival selection theory and better understand how prejudice has affected the preservation of queer folx’s collections. Martinez’s series is situated amongst other Western artworks that center archival records and queer themes throughout the last century. This section places his artwork in dialogue with other artists for whom the archive is the subject of their artwork. The artworks detailed exemplify the multiplicity of ways that queer folx critique and interpret the histories preserved in these institutions. Following this survey of art is an analysis of how archival records are selected for preservation and the inherent subjectivity of this task. Pedagogical writing on archival selection by Frank Boles, Richard Cox, and James O’Toole are consulted to better understand how archivists working in the field are taught to handle this type of work. Most of their writing is focused on traditional archives and fails to articulate the challenges facing counterarchives, spaces formed to compensate for the erasure of queer persons in traditional institutions. This review of archival scholarship ends with a critique of how queer counterarchives have fallen short of their inclusive aims. The final section of this text is dedicated to a close study of Martinez’s Archive series. His photographs document the Harry R. Eberlin photograph collection and the John J. Wilcox, Jr. Archives in Philadelphia. The historical context of the Eberlin collection and the founding of its host repository are presented in conjunction with Archive series because Martinez’s compositions are inseparable from these histories. Philadelphia queer culture in the 1970s and 1980s is revealed through the retelling of these histories and by examining who was visualized in the images themselves. These images of bars and events simultaneously reveal the gender and racial disparity of patronage within these spaces and exemplify long-standing tensions in the city’s queer spaces. Lastly, this text posits a practice called “pseudo-processing” where artists document and preserve facsimiles of archival records to question the divisions of archival labor from that of an artist performing comparable tasks. / Art History

Física das radiações: uma proposta para o Ensino Médio / Radiations physics: a proposal for the High School

Sousa, Wellington Batista de 14 August 2009 (has links)
The society has questioned what should be taught in science learning, including both \"why\" and \"what for\" some subjects should be taught. This kind of discussion occurs also inside the educational environment. Presently the science teaching is not connected to the reality of the student, because teaching has not related to scientific innovations, no updated themes are discussed in the classroom. In this work the curricular updating is inserted through the inclusion of Modern and Contemporary Physics topics, as suggested in the PCNEM and PCNEM+. This proposal consists of a didactic sequence of a course on Radiations Physics appropriated to the high school teaching. The concept of \"markers\" and \"structurating-markers\" is discussed within the Didactic Transposition Theory. \"Markers\" are established through the proposed activities, which are supposed to be the essential ones to the learning sequence.
