Accessibilité des référents en sémantique du discours / Accessibility of Referents in Discourse Semantics

Qian, Sai 07 November 2014 (has links)
This thesis has its roots in the standard Montagovian and dynamic semantic tradition. The subject is conditions under which a noun phrase may act as antecedent of a particular anaphoric expression. The work thesis deals with the accessibility of discourse referents using a formal system of dynamic semantics. The framework used is the one proposed by De Groote, Type Theoretic Dynamic Logic (TTDL) because it follows the Montagovian tradition and only makes use of standard mathematical and logical tools which allows to maintain compositionnality. We extend the coverage of TTDL to cases which are naturally problematic for classical dynamic semantic theories. In particularly, this thesis aims to extend TTDL's coverage of the accessibility of referents to two exceptions of classical dynamic theories, namely anaphora under double negation and modality. An adaptation is defined for each case and finally, an integration of various solutions is proposed, which shows the flexibility of TTDL

A Comparison of the Socio-Economic Status with the School Status of the Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth-Grade Pupils of the Montague, Texas, Public Schools

Hodge, Robert Bee 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is a comparison of the socio-economic status with the school status of the seventh, eighth, and ninth-grade pupils of the Montague, Texas, public schools. In this study the socio-economic status is interpreted as meaning the position that the individual, or family, occupies with reference to average standards based on the home status indexes.

Simultaneous abstraction and semantic theories

Ruhrberg, Peter January 1996 (has links)
I present a simple Simultaneous Abstraction Calculus, where the familiar lambda-abstraction over single variables is replaced by abstraction over whole sets of them. Terms are applied to partial assignments of objects to variables. Variants of the system are investigated and compared, with respect to their semantic and proof theoretic properties. The system overcomes the strict ordering requirements of the standard lambda-calculus,and is shown to provide the kind of "non-selective" binding needed for Dynamic Montague Grammar and Discourse Representation Theory. It is closely related to a more complex system, due to Peter Aczel and Rachel Lunon, and can be used for Situation Theory in a similar way. I present versions of these theories within an axiomatic, property-theoretic framework, based on Aczels Frege Structures. The aim of this work is to provide the means for integrating various semantic theories within a formal framework,so that they can share what is common between them, and adopt from each other what is compatible with them.

An Evaluation of the Health and Safety Education of Montague County, Texas, Schools

Wilson, Robert Cecil 08 1900 (has links)
Health is a primary objective of modern education. It was named as the first of the seven cardinal principles of education. Over a period of years the health and safety of the school children have gradually become more firmly fixed as a part of the school program. Modern schools, when adequately staffed and administered, provide experiences in healthful daily living, an opportunity to become acquainted with good health services, a chance to learn something about the care of ones own body, the maintenance of health, and the prevention of disease. Thus the schools have come to contribute to community health through their planned programs of health service and through cooperation with other health and safety agencies.

Hydrogeochemical Evaluation and Impact of Remediation Design on Arsenic Mobility at Historical Gold Mine Sites

DeSisto, Stephanie 04 June 2014 (has links)
Historical gold mine tailings at several sites in Nova Scotia, Canada are publicly accessible and may pose a threat to human and ecosystem health because of high arsenic (As) concentrations in the tailings (max 25 wt.%) and associated pore waters (up to 100 mg/L). Two of these sites, Montague and Goldenville, are under consideration for remediation. Similar tailings sites have been cleaned up by covering the mine wastes with soil. However, the tailings at Montague and Goldenville have been weathering for at least 70 years, leading to a wide range of As-bearing secondary minerals which may dissolve under a soil cover, releasing As to local waters. The challenge of remediating these heterogeneous tailings lies in the different Eh-pH niches in which iron arsenates (oxidizing, acidic), calcium-iron-arsenates (oxidizing, alkaline), and sulfides (reducing) are stable. The main objectives of this study were to: 1) characterize pre-remediation geochemical controls on As mobility in subsurface tailings; 2) establish hydrogeological influences on As mobility; and 3) identify geochemical changes that result when a low organic soil cover is applied to the tailings. Pore water measurements were combined with bulk chemistry, scanning electron microscopy, and synchrotron micro-X-ray diffraction analyses, which were used to characterize the mineralogical composition of the tailings. Groundwater and surface water flow regimes throughout the tailings were defined through the use of piezometers and hydraulic conductivity measurements. Laboratory leaching experiments were used to assess the effects of a soil cover on the tailings. Variable weathering conditions over time have resulted in a continuum of saturation and redox environments and a range of As hosts in the tailings. In some areas, tailings pore waters are mixing with stream waters leading to As transport beyond the tailings. Applying a low organic soil cover does not induce reducing conditions in the tailings or cause dissolved As concentrations to increase compared to field pore water concentrations. This type of soil cover is effective in slowing sulfide mineral oxidation while maintaining stable conditions for secondary As-phases. The results of this research can be used to inform remediation decisions and guide ongoing environmental management of historical gold mine sites. / Thesis (Ph.D, Geological Sciences & Geological Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2014-06-04 10:22:43.838

A Study to Determine the Soundness of the Gilmer-Aikin Plan of Financing the Public Schools of Montague County, Texas

Browning, Leslie L. 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this thesis is to examine the Gilmer-Aikin plan as it will affect the Montague County, Texas, schools in order to ascertain whether present inequities, if any, will be corrected, and to present additional remedial proposals if needed.

L'interface Langage/Pensée

Ba, Mouhamadou El Hady 09 March 2012 (has links) (PDF)
