Devotional Overdoors in Medieval and Renaissance Italy

Marzullo, Francesca January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation offers a wide-ranging examination of the half-length sacred figure over the door in medieval and early Renaissance Italian art. Drawing on a wealth of visual material that has attracted little attention among scholars, it argues that such images played a vital role in the religious lives of their beholders, transforming doorways into sites of devotional experience both within and beyond the church. Depicted incompletely, the holy body joined with the threshold below it to form a synthetic, composite image, one that invited the imaginative and corporeal participation of the viewer. This project employs various lenses to interpret the meaning and function of works about which scant written documentation comes down to us. In addition to considering scriptural metaphor and exegetical thought regarding the significance of doors, it explores the relationship of overdoor frescoes, mosaics, and reliefs to sacred icon panels, suggesting that the former might be recognized as wall icons, possessive of a heightened devotional appeal. It also uses overdoor images to illuminate broader spiritual and artistic concerns, including the nature of passage to the Christian afterlife, and the interaction between picture and frame, a topic central to Renaissance illusionism. Serving as an introduction to an important yet overlooked aspect of Italian visual culture, this text provides a conceptual framework for understanding a vast corpus of images that were essential to everyday piety, and that inflect our view of familiar art historical narratives.

The College of the Pacific Seal in pebble mosaic

Stanley, Elaine Brink 01 January 1950 (has links) (PDF)
Abstract not provided. The following is the introduction. It has been agreed that a work of art is to augment the usual written thesis and be considered the greater part of the thesis in meeting the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. This paper is submitted as an auxiliary factor--not as the thesis itself. It is understood that the basis of judgment shall rest upon the acceptability of the art work, in this case the College of the Pacific Seal in Pebble Mosaic as seen and as described in this paper. This paper provides a record of the work and additional interesting information pertinent to the subject.

Stochastic Geometry and Mosaic Models with Applications

Nilsson, Albert January 2023 (has links)
In this thesis, we consider stationary random mosaics with a focus on the Poisson-Voronoi mosaic and the Poisson-Delaunay mosaic. We consider properties of stationary random mosaics in R2, such as mean value results of the typical cell. Further, we simulate various mean value results of the typical cell, a random neighbor of the typical cell, and the zero cell for the Poisson-Voronoi mosaic in R2. Some theory of point processes is introduced that is needed for random mosaics, including Palm theory, marked point processes, and the Pois point process. Finally, we consider an incremental flip-based algorithm for generating the Voronoi mosaic.

Conservação ambiental em cenários de uso = medidas de mudanças, heterogeneidade e valoração da paisagem / Environmental conservation in land use scenarios : measurements of changes, heterogeneity and landscape valuation

Vieira, Elisa Hardt Alves 07 February 2010 (has links)

Abstract: The proposal of strategies and valuation criteria for biological conservation based on structural elements of the landscape may help the process of environmental planning and decisionmaking. This study was aimed at assessing the quality of the conservation status of past and present landscapes and expectations of social groups scenarios based on the interpretation of the structural heterogeneity and the valuation of the landscape. This study was conducted in Serra do Japi, a preserved and legally protected area in São Paulo State. The case study was the Ermida residence property development, which was legally approved before the protective measures for the preservation of Serra do Japi, and that currently faces restrictions for its implementation. Geographic Information Systems and statistic software were used to: map land use, construct scenarios, identify borders, create mosaics and appraise the landscape based on resource availability, permeability, and fragmentation. The results revealed that measurements of the amount of forest may lead to decisions different from those based on the evaluation of the heterogeneity of landscape mosaics, which was more effective to show evidences of historical changes and interactions, and establishment of limits. The metrics of valuation indicated that the increase in the amount of habitat not always represented an increase in landscape quality. An access road was the anthropogenic component with the highest impact on forests. The extent of the edge effect varied depending on the neighborhood and on the indicator of this effect in the structure or composition of the forest. This study revealed that the changes in the last 40 years in Serra do Japi evolved toward conservation, regarding quantity, availability of resources and permeability of the landscape. Unlike the expected, the legal scenario presented a stronger tendency of fragmentation of the landscape than the current situation. In the case of the Ermida development area, the criteria used did not indicate a substantial loss of forests in the area and its existence did not prevent the continuity of the successional process, as well as the connectivity of the landscape. On the other hand, the availability of optimum resources greatly decreased, caused by the availability of access roads and by the resulting edge effect. Because of that, among the expectations of social groups, the best alternative for conservation was the one that predicted the optimization of road access. / Doutorado / Recursos Hidricos, Energeticos e Ambientais / Doutor em Engenharia Civil

Dante a Ravenna / Dante and Ravenna

Boháčová, Adéla January 2021 (has links)
The Master's thesis is focused on research of the Italian academic discourse from the years 1891-2008 dealing with the influence of the visual culture of Ravenna on Dante's Divine Comedy. One of the scholars that can be placed in the context of Italian discourse is the philologist and aesthetician Jaroslav Hruban, the only Czech scholar who occupied himself with the relationship between Dante and Ravenna and continuously followed up the development of the interwar Italian Dantology. The thesis puts forward two questions: how the scholars of the Italian academic discourse and Jaroslav Hruban reflect the relationship of Dante and Ravenna, and if we can trace the influence of the visual culture of Ravenna (especially of the mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries) in the text of Dante's Divine Comedy. The questions are solved by application of the historiographic methods that were used to examine Italian Dantology, the methods of literary studies and art history by which analysis and comparison of the text and imagery were performed, and also the methods of visual culture that were used to reconstruct the image of Ravenna during the time of Dante's stay in the town and his "period eye". The scholars believe that the inspirational influences of the Ravenna mosaics and visual culture on Dante's Divine...

Inscribed within the image : the visual character of early Christian mosaic inscriptions

Leatherbury, Sean Villareal January 2012 (has links)
Between the fourth and the seventh centuries CE, Christian patrons erected thousands of churches, chapels, and monasteries in cities and villages across the Mediterranean, decorating the apses, walls and floors of many of these structures with figural and geometric mosaics. These late antique Christian mosaics have been studied for their iconography, their Graeco-Roman components, and as evidence for the religious beliefs of newly-Christian patrons. However, art historians largely have ignored the ways that texts, inscribed within the visual field and composed of the same mosaic material, functioned as images in Christian spaces. For the first time, this thesis assembles the foundations of a comprehensive catalogue of early Christian mosaic inscriptions, places them back into the physical spaces in which they were meant to be read, and analyzes how these texts functioned both verbally and visually for the late antique reader/viewer, against the backdrop of Graeco-Roman traditions. I first examine the ekphrastic components of Christian inscriptions and look more closely at the different ways in which texts work with and against images and spaces, encouraging the viewer to react physically and mentally. Second, I study the language of light used by the inscriptions, and argue that this language linked text to the material of mosaic and enabled patrons to make complex statements about their cultural erudition and religious affiliation. Third, I investigate the functions and visual forms of short tituli which label scenes or name figures to simplify, authenticate or transform static images into narratives in motion. Finally, I turn to the frames of the inscriptions and contend that different forms conveyed powerful visual arguments. By writing these texts back into their mosaics, this thesis argues that texts and images were inseparable in the period, and that text written into images performed and played in more complex ways than has been previously thought.
