Divine anger, divine holiness and the exclusion of Moses in Numbers and Deuteronomy

Man, Kin Foon January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the exclusion of Moses from the Promised Land in Numbers and Deuteronomy. Why are there different reasons given for his exclusion in the two books? Can they be explained by the complex redactions of Deuteronomy? There are four different answers to the question of Moses’ exclusion. According to Deut 1-3, divine anger is directed at Moses because he is the leader of the first exodus generation on whom the wrath of God is visited. Moses is excluded because he should bear the same punishment as the first generation of Israelites who left Egypt. Another reason is given in Deut 4, a mixture of late layers in the Deuteronomistic History. Accordingly, Moses’ exclusion is compared to the destruction and scattering of the future generations of the Israelites who provoked God to anger. The “anger-punishment pattern” of Moses’ exclusion, which is a theme of divine anger in the Deuteronomistic History, is used to confess the sin of the Israelites. Thirdly, in the post-Priestly passages in Numbers and Deuteronomy, Moses is ordered to die because of the sin of failing to sanctify YHWH. The exclusion of Moses is a natural consequence of his death outside the Promised Land. Finally, Deut 31 and 34 imply that Moses has reached the limit of life span which was set by YHWH.

När Gud kontaktade Moses : En jämförande analys mellan Andra Moseboken och fyra bibliska filmatiseringar / When God made contact with Moses : A comparative analysis of Exodus and four biblical movies

Lundström, Mikael January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to investigate the pattern of Moses and Gods communication as well as the essential events in the story of Moses and the exodus from Egypt in: King James Bible, The Ten Commandments, The Prince OF Egypt, The Bible – Episode 2: The Exodus and Exodus: Gods and Kings. The method that has been used is a traditional comparative analysis method where two or more objects are placed against each other to create a comparison. The method was conducted using comparison matrices, where objects questioned the factors for forming factor values. The results of the study are based on previous research and the data collected during the course of the study. In the final result there were similarities, but also differences between the objects and the cause are explained by the study's final discussion.

Not made with hands : Gregory of Nyssa's doctrine of the celestial tabernacle in its Jewish and Christian contexts

Conway-Jones, Ann Ismene January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to explore Gregory of Nyssa’s tabernacle imagery, as presented in Life of Moses 2.170-201. This part of Life of Moses has suffered from relative neglect compared to the scholarly attention conferred on Gregory’s apophatic darkness imagery. For the purposes of this study, Life of Moses 2.162-201 has been divided into nine consecutive sections, given the following headings: Darkness; The tabernacle ‘not made with hands’; Christological interpretation; Divine names; Heavenly powers; The earthly tabernacle; Heavenly and earthly worship; The holy of holies; The priestly vestments. Each section is analysed in the same way. Firstly, Gregory’s text is examined, and his biblical sources identified. Secondly, there is a presentation of relevant passages in the work of his Alexandrian predecessors – Philo, Clement and Origen. Thirdly, there is a discussion of the ways in which Gregory’s fourth century theological context has influenced his interpretation, often causing him to differ from his predecessors. It is under this heading of ‘theological context’ that contemporary scholarly discussions about Gregory are most in evidence. Fourthly, a heuristic comparison with a range of heavenly ascent texts from the Hellenistic and Late Antique worlds is undertaken. It is this methodology of heuristic comparison which is the experimental aspect of the thesis. The aim is not to prove influence, but to use heavenly ascent texts as a foil, in order to shed new light on Gregory’s imagery. Does Gregory’s interpretation of the tabernacle come into focus when viewed through the lens of heavenly ascent? In order to answer this question, the scholarship on heavenly ascent texts is mined for new ways of looking at Life of Moses. The conclusions begin by reviewing the methodology. It is argued that although many of the themes explored stem from the biblical text, and occur in Gregory’s Alexandrian predecessors, the richness of possibilities they provide, and therefore the choices made by Gregory, only become apparent when his work is compared and contrasted with a wide range of other heavenly ascent texts. Even in the case of a fourth century Christian work heavily influenced by Platonism, attending to the Jewish matrix of Christian mysticism pays dividends. The conclusions continue by listing the key ideas discovered in Life of Moses 2.170-201. They end by discussing the relationships between mysticism, theology and politics in Gregory’s tabernacle imagery. It is argued that Gregory holds all three together. This is typical of heavenly ascent texts, which combine descriptions of religious experience with claims to authoritative knowledge. For Gregory, the high point of Moses’ ascent into the darkness of Mount Sinai is the mystery of Christian doctrine. The heavenly tabernacle is a type of the heavenly Christ. This mystery is beyond intellectual comprehension, it can only be grasped by faith; and only the select few, destined for positions of responsibility, should even attempt to do so. But its benefits are available to all through the community’s worship in the earthly tabernacle. Anyone can aspire to wear an airy, angelic robe by living a life of virtue, in which faith and practice go hand in hand.

Investigating the Function and Therapeutic Potential of the GCN5b Bromodomain in Toxoplasma Gondii

Hanquier, Jocelyne Nicole 06 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The obligate intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a medically relevant pathogen that has infected a third of the world’s population. Toxoplasma is the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, which can have severe repercussions such as encephalitis and even death in immunocompromised patients. Current treatments for toxoplasmosis only target acute infection and can be toxic to patients, resulting in complications including allergy and bone marrow suppression. Thus, the identification of novel drug targets and therapies for toxoplasmosis is vital. Epigenetic modulators of lysine acetylation, including ‘writers,’ ‘erasers,’ and ‘readers,’ have been identified as promising drug targets for protozoan parasites. The lysine acetyltransferase (KAT) GCN5b appears to be an essential gene for Toxoplasma viability. The KAT domain of GCN5b is essential to GCN5b function and is targetable by small molecule inhibitors. While the acetyltransferase activity of this gene is well-characterized, the functionality of its C-terminal bromodomain (BRD) remains to be understood. Bromodomains are readers of lysine acetylation, and recently, bromodomain inhibitors have shown promise in a number of human diseases, as well as in protozoan parasites. We hypothesized that the GCN5b bromodomain is critical for Toxoplasma viability. The data reported herein suggest that the GCN5b bromodomain is important for tachyzoite viability and may serve as a novel therapeutic target in Toxoplasma.
