Group Preferences for Rural Amenities and Farmland Preservation in the Niagara Fruit Belt

Prins, Peter Gideon January 2005 (has links)
During the production of agricultural commodities, an agricultural landscape is simultaneously being produced. In many regions, agriculture is no longer valued for just the production of food and fibre but also for the social, cultural and environmental amenities associated with the landscape. The paradigm of multifunctional agriculture has become concerned with the joint production of agricultural products and these rural amenities. The loss of agricultural land especially in areas around the urban-rural fringe has greatly affected the demand for these rural amenities. In response, governments and volunteer organizations have developed programs to preserve farmland. The Niagara Region is home to some of the best fruit growing land in Canada but has a long history of fighting to maintain its farmland. Drawing from the multifunctional paradigm, this study analyzes the preference for different rural amenities and farmland preservation in this unique region. Survey and interviews conducted with both the non-farm population and farmers indicated that demand exists for maintaining rural amenities and for farmland preservation. Consideration of these preferences will enhance the development of farmland preservation in the Niagara Fruit Belt.

Organic farming and agricultural transitions : Understanding the role of agricultural space in Halland, Sweden

Antonsson, Adam January 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to investigate the attitudes towards organic farming and how agricultural space is understood among organic farmers in the Swedish region of Halland and then to relate this to the ongoing discussion on multifunctional agricultural transition. The research is based on a field study on nine different organic farms in Halland, where qualitative interviews have been conducted for the creation of the empirical results. Using the theory of planned behavior and the concept of the “good farmer”, the thesis has revealed that the organic farming community in Halland is heterogeneous and different perspectives and attitudes are expressed about organic farming and agriculture. While the farmers are driven by many aspects of organic farming, the attitudes towards agriculture are often in line with traditional productivist ideals highlighting clean fields and high yields, even though many organic farmers have started to question the traditional norms often due to the different conditions met by organic farmers. Due to the various attitudes represented, the range within the multifunctional agricultural spectrum is rather wide were some organic farmers understand agricultural space more in line with productivist ideals while others express attitudes in line with organic farming principles, suggesting a strong multifunctional understanding of agricultural space.

Klein, Angela Luciane January 2012 (has links)
Pedagogical rural tourism is characterized as a set of educational activities carried out within the farm as a teaching resource that uses the agricultural and cattle breeding activities, as well as the natural resources found there. This is a new socioeconomic alternative, that under the multifunctional agriculture, can promote both rural producers as it generate additional income, appreciation of their knowledge and practical skills, it allows the students a different kind of learning and experiences that happen in direct contact with different elements of nature. This research, however, had its main purpose describing and analyzing activities that distinguish pedagogical rural tourism, focusing on it as an educative practice developed in regular school. Two experiments carried out in southern Brazil are analyzed: Caminhos Rurais de Porto Alegre (RS) and educational tourism project Viva Ciranda in Joinville (SC). We have used bibliographic research, analysis of proposed activities and semistructured interviews accomplished with 11 rural owners who offer educational activities in their properties and 22 teachers, responsible for the class of students that visited these properties among September and November 2011. The results of this research show that are developed activities on these enterprises, in spite of showing their particularization (physical structure, resources, strategies and intention), regard similar features like: these experiences allow students to have direct contact with rural environment, helping the comprehension on issues as water resources, food origin, flora, fauna and sustainable production. These aspects can be used in different knowledge areas, inside interdisciplinary perspectives, with the indispensable presence of a teacher. The pedagogic rural tourism in this approach helps the rural development and plays an important role in education.
