The study arose out of a curiosity and a personal interest in finding different methods of songwriting for various target groups in music therapy. The aim of the study was that, based on a literature review and interview, compile information about the different methods of songwriting for different audiences, how as a music therapist can work with songwriting and what the outcome might be. The study presents a review of relevant literature and previous research in the field of songwriting. From a hermeneutic perspective, the interview responses interpreted and transcribed, and literature have summarized the most important and relevant on the subject. The questions have focused on how different methods might look like and what advantages and disadvantages there are to the methods, both for clinicians and clients. Questions about the tools, techniques, theoretical knowledge and reflection on the different diseases and disabilities, are also included in the study.

"Music should be mandatory" : a quantitative study of the significance of the subject of music for high school students.Eriksson, Elin January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the importance of the subject of music for high school students. A quantitative method, digital survey, has been used to examine high school students' experiences and feelings toward the subject of music. The results have been analyzed from a socio-cultural perspective and from the viewpoint that learning takes place in communication and interactions between people. The previous research that dealt with the subject in the past has also been included in the analysis process. The results show that the subject of music is important for high school students, albeit of different kinds of significance and from different perspectives. Many students have positive experiences of the subject of music, which results in the subject having a positive meaning for them, while others have negative experiences of the subject. The results also show that the subject of music is important not only for students' mood but also for an individual's development of creativity, problem-solving ability and collaboration ability. This creativity also contributes to other professions and should not only be seen as something artistic for only music or other artistic forms of expression. Creativity can contribute to other professions where problem-solving ability, creativity and collaboration are required.

Musikhögskolan i Stockholm. / Munkesjö, Maria: "Okey, I can sit and listen to music but I will not eat !" Hip Hop and Hope : exploring the affordances of hip hop centred community music making for enhancing adolescents’ engagement with the field of water-related diseases in peri-urban community settings in KwaZulu-Natal, South AfricaInglis, Hilary M. January 2017 (has links)
Adolescents living in peri-urban settings in South Africa face multiple challenges to realising their own health and wellbeing. A lack of opportunities exists for young people to gain practical skills and the self-efficacy necessary to address these challenges. One area in which they have the potential to make an impact is that of water-related disease. In this context Jive Media Africa, a media agency with a focus on health communications, initiated the Hip Hop Health project. The project made use of hip hop centred community music making to enable 60 young people from three schools in peri-urban communities in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, to share,
with their broader communities, findings from research tasks that they had undertaken in the area of water and health. This qualitative case study explored the affordances of this community music making process for the adolescents involved. The study employed thematic analysis of thick descriptions of video excerpts, song lyrics and focus group transcriptions, drawing strongly on a Freirean construct of conscientisation and on youth empowerment theory. This research suggests that the writing and performance of hip hop songs empowers young people to engage with complex issues affecting their health and wellbeing. Through this process they gained hope for their futures, as individuals and as a community. The
overarching theme of empowerment is supported by three subthemes, each of which was facilitated by the creation and performance of hip hop songs. In ‘becoming’, young people gained knowledge and were empowered as individuals. Through ‘belonging,’ the learners forged mutually supportive relationships with their peers, families and the broader community.
Finally, through ‘believing’, young people began to conceptualise the future as holding hope and possibilities, based on their learnings and the experiences of the process. In this sense, empowerment was seen to take place at both an individual and a community level, and demonstrated elements of building critical consciousness through cycles of action and reflection. The findings hold relevance for programmes that seek to address other issues impacting adolescent health and wellbeing by empowering participants through community music making using hip hop and rap. / Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / University of Pretoria / Music / MMus Musicology / Unrestricted

Research shows how music influences our total well-being and our potential. There are studies that show a connection between music and achievement and statistically students in music programs show better academic results in all subjects than other students. This study has looked into how high school students perceive choral singing in school, and specifically if they feel that choral singing can affect their total scholastic achievements. The study focuses on obtaining a deeper perspective on how these students view if their own personal development is connected to their choral singing in school. What traits and abilities does choral singing promote? The results have been related to current research about motivation, performance, and success. Does choral singing contribute to the improvement of students’ overall scholastic performance? The results show that choral singing has many effects, whereby some can be viewed as achievement-boosting. Broadly speaking, choral singing is perceived to be meaningful by the test-subjects, which leads to a high degree of responsibility. Choral singing stimulates both mentally and physically, and generates positive emotions which contribute to feelings of satisfaction and well-being. Choral singing fulfills many needs, such as security, community, and appreciation, which are said to be prerequisites for being motivated to achieve. It is difficult to prove if this combination is responsible for affecting the students’ scholastic results, but since choral singing generates abilities that permeate a student’s overall character and attitude, it is viable to draw this conclusion.
