Fowlie, Luke 08 1900 (has links)
This master’s thesis is concerned with the role of musical gesture in the development of musical styles that have become syncretic. It seeks to define in detail the popular guitar style of assiko, particular to the Bassa of Southern Cameroon, as represented internationally by the guitarist and traditionally initiated percussionist, Atna Njock. Through a dialogic and participative approach, the techniques that underlie assiko guitar playing are explored by comparison with European, African American, and African examples. The influences that define Atna’s playing are contextualized within Bassa culture, with its troubled history of colonial and missionary influence, and elaborated by an account of his particular musical philosophy (or spirituality) and background. The participatory approach provides an emic perspective, meaning internal to the culture, of assiko playing technique and structure while subjecting the musician’s statements to our own analytical scrutiny. The comparison with the various percussion instruments on which Atna was initiated demonstrates how these instruments shaped his guitar playing. His role as “guarantor” of Bassa musical tradition underlies his approach to music, which manifests as a particular concern for “authenticity” in the reproduction of the rhythms of a given musical “language”. His connection to Bassa culture is ultimately expressed through his reproduction of the playing style of his master, originator of modern assiko, Jean Bikoko “Aladin”. Atna’s particular contribution to Bikoko’s guitar technique is conceived as adding to the ancestral lineage. An analysis of a current assiko piece from Atna’s most recent album demonstrates how his incorporation of “modern” styles reflects traditional processes of incorporating foreign cultural elements.

Perez, Mauricio 07 October 2016 (has links)
This research analyzes the use of digital physical interfaces in the creation and performance of electroacoustic music in real time, especially the concept of musical gesture. For this purpose, first, we conducted a systematic study of two central objects for research, namely, digital interfaces and the concept of gesture in music. We revisit some core elements of the construction of digital musical instruments, added new perspectives to digital luthiery from the concept of musical gesture as the mapping. In addition, we raised some aesthetic issues both an understanding of these interfaces as musical instruments as their use in musical composition and performance of live electronics. The concept of musical gesture, in turn, is understood in this study as an emerging issue of musical practice nowadays. We pointed to the different understandings of research in music about the meanings contained in this concept, as body and sound dimensions and kinetic and semantic capabilities. Thus, we have expanded the concept of musical gesture in a context that uses these interfaces to ideas such as corporeality, physicality and causality. Subsequently, we propose the junction between the elements present in the concept of musical gesture with the constituent elements of the interfaces and the practice of music creation and performance mediated by them, especially on the point of view of causality. Thus we recognize that the relationship between bodily actions and sound movements contribute to the musical significance in practices that use digital physical interfaces. We identify that these causal relationships may present from physical and natural models of gestural coherence, as artificial relationship between gesture and sound and their surrogates Finally, it is presented a methodology for performances that use these interfaces, as here understood, which include both how the interface is presented to the musician that plays much like the relationship between performer and interface can be understood by the viewer-listener. These proposals demonstrate how the interfaces are inserted in a context that considers the body as an aesthetic element in the practice of the live electroacoustic music.

The gesture’s parameterisation in scenic musical forms : Example of contemporary music theatre : state of the art, historiography, analysis

Délécraz, Cyril 11 July 2019 (has links)
Over the course of the 20th century, gesture gradually became a parameter of musical composition in the repertoires of the Western classical tradition. The avant-garde (Dada, futurism, Bauhaus, expressionism, etc.) is at the origin of performance concept while noise music broadens the field of aesthetically audible sounds. Rejecting the romantic opera and all its attributes (lyrical singing technique, supremacy of the dramatic text over music, orchestra pit, the illusion of the reality, orchestral opulence, intermissions, etc.), composers feel the need to express themselves differently, while the capacity for renewal of the tonal system wanes. They define new scenic musical forms in a framework dictated by performance and in accordance with a new awareness of listening resulting from numerous experiments carried out in the musical studios. After World War II, with the advent of concrete music, the voice became not only the vector of speech but also a generator of sound, the scenic space was rid of the performer and, in return, some composers (Mauricio Kagel, Dieter Schnebel, Luciano Berio, John Cage, to name but a few) offered hybrid pieces where music is combined with the diction of a narrator, pantomime or theatrical action, without one component constantly getting the upper hand. According to an empirical approach to the body mediated through video recording (based on a corpus stretching from 1960 to 2016), it is possible to highlight counterpoints of information from several elements of the recorded performances (music, gestures, movements, light, etc.), which ultimately construct a meaningful reality for the listener-spectator. By directly analysing the performative works, it appears that the gesture is indeed a structural element of a spectacular nature that participates in the creation of discursive forms and, consequently constituting an indispensable element of reception. By focusing on the parameterisation of the gesture, this work provides a first element of answer to the following question: how does musical performance, in its living aspect, integrate the gesture and how does it influence the form? In this way, it hopes to pave the way for a musicology of contemporary music theatre.

Is made here a gesture study in musical performance and its possible potential to optimize the interpretative communication between performer and pubic. For this, we used three music pieces for trombone by composer Estércio Marquez Cunha. Backed in bibliographical searches as well as in my experience report into the preparation and interpretation of the musical works, this research describes the relationship between performance and musical gesture. From the interpretative analysis, it was found multiple instances in which musical gesture, coupled with body movement, likely to influence the interpreter expressiveness, interfering therefore directly at the moment of performance.

Hearing through the body : expression and movement in music

Papageorgiou, Georgios January 2012 (has links)
This thesis engages with complex issues of musical expression and movement, and their relation, on the one hand, to musical structure and, on the other hand, to embodied musical experience. It aims to fill a gap in music theory and analysis: most methods overemphasise abstract conceptualisation of structural relations at the expense of the more dynamic, intuitive aspect of musical experience. As a solution, it offers a specific analytical method that can be used to explore dynamic aspects of music as experienced through the whole body. Drawing mainly on nineteenth-century piano music, I analyse aspects of structure in both composition and performance in terms of expressive and motional qualities, revealing the relationship between musical and physical movement. Expressivity in music derives its meaning, at least partly, from the embodied experience of music: performers shape expression through their whole body while listeners react to it in a comparable way, albeit less overtly. Two related systems of graphic notation are introduced, which provide a non-verbal means of representing expressive movement and at the same time encourage an immediate, visceral relationship to the music. The first notation captures the animated quality of expressive movement by analogy with the motion of a bouncing ball, while the second breaks down the expressive musical flow into discrete gestural patterns of specific motional character. While the ultimate value of this method lies in the analytical process it instigates, it also provides a novel theoretical framework that sheds light on the interaction, as well as integration, between structures such as metre, rhythm, harmony and voice-leading, which are traditionally studied mostly independently. In addition, it provides a useful tool for the study and communication of performance interpretation, based on data extracted from recordings in the form of tempo and dynamic fluctuation graphs.

Brito, Mariana do Socorro da Silva January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation is the performer’s account of the process of constructing a performance of Béla Bártok’s Romanian Folk Dances from the perspective of embodied cognition. Based on Godøy’s proposition of gestural-sonic coarticulation (2006; 2011), and Alexandra Pierce’s gestural approach to piano performance (2007), this research investigated how gesture and sound shape one another, and how this continuous process affects the conception of the work and the relations between performer, music and instrument. Considering that lived experience exceeds piano practice, perspectives from extra-musical activities were considered due to their contribution towards promoting bodily awareness and insights that were relevant to the artistic process. The methodological approach draws from Artistic Research and Autoethnography in regard to uncovering embodied knowledge ingrained in the process of artistic creation through personal narrative. The documentation of the process comprised: 1) a journal describing practice sessions, piano lessons and extra-musical experiences; 2) video recordings of practice sessions; 3) video recordings of performances along the process; 4) a comparison between the final performance and the first recording of the piece made prior to the present research. These records were examined with the purpose of comprehending the artistic process from the perspective of body and music in a constant state of becoming, identifying the most meaningful moments of insight, and mapping creative resources devised by the performer during the artistic process. The performer’s reflections upon the process lead to recognizing oneself as an embodied subject, to perceiving music as an essentially corporeal phenomenon, and to transformations in the conception of the musical work. The artistic process centered on the performer’s body promoted significant changes in the performer’s interaction with the instrument, the development of a broader gestural repertoire, an increment in expressive resources, and the refinement of aural perception, fostering the growth of creativity and artistic autonomy, as well as emotional maturation.
