Novaes, Ronaldo 27 November 2015 (has links)
Inserted into the line of research that is willing to examine the discursive processes (rhetorical and topical structures) of religious music in the colonial period, developed by Musicology Laboratory of the Department of Music (LAMSU- DM/FFCLRP), under the direction of Prof. Dr. Diósnio Machado Neto, and as a natural consequence of my academic activities, which, in 2008, under the auspices of Pro Dean of Graduate University of São Paulo, accomplished Scientific Initiation under the title, \"Musical Rhetoric in Andrew\'s Society of Silva Gomes \", this work aims to contribute to the body of research dealing with recent studies of musical rhetoric, inserted in musicology and analysis, continuing the research already carried out, looking for, however, deepen and solidify theories about the use the rhetoric in the work of the Luso-Brazilian composer through greater analytical systematic in his work.

Delphim Rezende Porto Junior 14 May 2018 (has links)
The humanistic debate of artistic practices in the Italian Renaissance, especially in the sixteenth century, fostered one of the most complex and fruitful textual elaborations of music treatises. The theoretical contextualization of that musical practice, as well as an investigation on the role of their professional and dilettante musicians, which are the goals of this research, aim at analytically contextualizing the epistemic formation of Renaissance musicians based on 16th century publications printed in Italian and Latin. An essential tool for understanding the treatises in question, Rhetoric is the appropriate tool for reading the \"text beyond the text,\" in addition to being common knowledge to those authors who showed a broad humanistic baggage in their publications, as well the expected technical mastering. By paragoning disciplines and skills fostered by the study of Italian musica prattica and the studia humanitatis among courtiers and musicians in Renaissance, we intend to bibliographically point out the high degree of importance of extrinsic knowledge to the pure action of players or singers, explaining the rhetorical, poetic, and scientific elements contained in those Italian musical editions. Since the very understanding of music and musicians is intricately diverse and broad in that context, it is fair to recover that horizon of meaning--concepts and ideas--through artistic and non-artistic musical documents that outline, beyond the philosophical sedes argumentorum, amendments and topics dealt with in those treatises. Literarily speaking, the humanistic musician, also referred to, at the time, as a perfetto musico, acts as a gentilhuomo who moves, discursively speaking, amongst the nobles and courtiers of his time, developing and broadening technical discourse in view of the decorum of his readers and for the sake of his craft. Therefore, it is appropriate to consider the practical disciplines of Renaissance musicians\' exercise as part of a complex network of knowledge that highlights the poetic speech, recovering preceptives and 16th-century reasoning behind that artistic exercise.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita for Solo Flute, BWV 1013 Transcribed and Arranged for Guitar: A Musico-Rhetorical Performance Guide

Burns, Bryan Keith 08 1900 (has links)
The main purpose of this dissertation is to offer classical guitarists an additional analytical technique for interpreting and performing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. While this mode of analysis can be successfully applied to any of the instrumental works by Bach frequently transcribed and performed by guitarists, I have chosen for this study my recent transcription of the Partita in A minor for solo flute traverso, BWV 1013. With a continuo-based, harmonic realization of the Partita, I contribute to the existing guitar repertoire by offering a new transcription of this work, while demonstrating how historical concepts of rhetorical structure and aesthetics found in relevant primary source material can inspire a new approach to analysis, transcription, and performance practice. In this way, my investigations create additional perspectives for classical guitarists regarding the analysis and performance of this work, while complementing traditional harmonic analysis and subject labeling. Although it is my hope that this new transcription of the Partita will serve as an important contribution to the existing literature, the main purpose of this dissertation resides in the musico-rhetorical analytical technique and its implications on performance practice for classical guitarists.

La Grande Messe des morts de Hector Berlioz (1837) : son langage musical et sa stratégie rhétorique / Hector Berlioz’s Grande Messe des morts (1837) : his musical language and his rhetorical strategy

Kiuchi, Mariko 23 March 2018 (has links)
Hector Berlioz’s Grande Messe des morts has been particularly recognized by its variety of styles and the rapid change of expressive atmospheres. His innovative style arouses public’s emotion by cultivating a great number of unexpected effects that the music press in time of its first performance emphasized. How can be characterized various musical styles which connect with one another in this Requiem? How does the composer behave to attract the audience and to arouse their emotion? How did the audience feel composer’s strategy which was deployed in this work? This thesis aims to make clear the function of various musical materials in his composition, a communication mechanism established between composer and audience, and his conception of the “sacred” music. A study of rhetoric in his Requiem is founded on four successive analyses, inspired by Jean Molino and Jean-Jacques Nattiez’s musical communication theory and Jean-Pierre Bartoli’s rhetoric analysis: 1. study of the creative process of the composition (analysis of the external poïétique); 2. study of the music criticism of press articles (analysis of the external esthésique); 3. study of the principal of the music’s development and its formal narrativity (analysis of the inductive poïétique); 4. study of the tactics on audience’s expectation handled by the composer (analysis of the inductive poïétique). This study concluded that Berlioz succeeded in managing the dramatic intensity and the religiousness through a certain art of discourse, which maintains the work’s unity with a variety of atmospheres, musical topics and styles.

No. of bitstreams: 1 dissertacao_luana.pdf: 5114523 bytes, checksum: 978d1ab287d1d63aca71d42fe0aaaf10 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-03-30 / This work develops an analysis from the angle of the relationship text-music, aiming to support the performance of three songs for voice and piano written on the poetry Retrato by the Brazilian poet Cecilia Meireles, by the composers Antonio Ribeiro, Osvaldo Lacerda and Ronaldo Miranda. It is included in the field of the musical and poetic analysis, the technical study of performance and the study of Brazilian art song. To carry out this research it was used bibliographical and documentary survey with direct and indirect reference, analysis of scores of the songs chosen for study, preparing them for public performance; a critical challenge and new interpretative proposals from the collected data. The importance of this research is confirmed because in Brazil there are few studies aimed at substantiating the artistic interpretation of contemporary chamber song from the musical-rhetorical angle. This work, therefore, may improve the relation with the current musical practice, contributing to the creation and consolidation of music research in Brazil.

: perspectives historiques et théoriques / Musical rhetoric and the emotions : arousal or expression of the affects? : historical and theoretical perspectives

Favier, Jacques 28 October 2017 (has links)
Studying “musical rhetoric” seems likely to bring some specific light about the topic of music and emotions. Both fields of research in philosophy of music involved arouse an interest, especially last years. Therefore, we regard musical rhetoric and the distinctive phenomenon of German musical poetics as able to structure such a studying, through choices they suppose (for example, the fact that emotions are means for have an effect) and choices they leave. Our investigation includes the three main following parts: (a) some study about facets of the subject prior to musica poetica (in Ancient Greece, in Lutheran liturgy, in Italian theory of music); (b) some detailed examination about the topic of passions in German baroque treatises; (c) a review regarding evolution of the subject up to current discusses..
