Toward a Model of 12-Step Engagement: Predicting Recovery Involvement in Narcotics Anonymous

Howrey, Hillary L. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Substance use disorders (SUDs) affect a significant portion of the population and are noteworthy public health concerns. Mutual help organizations (MHOs) such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are considered evidence-based practices for SUDs. Despite a growing body of research examining mechanisms of change in MHOs, relatively few investigations of 12-step organizations have been theory-driven. Theory-based models of recovery provide a more comprehensive view of the range of individual factors affecting individuals in recovery and how and why they might engage in recovery-related behaviors. Stress and coping theory fills a gap in explaining how improvements occur as a result of MHO recovery engagement from a bio-psycho-social perspective. Although some recovery program-related mechanisms of change in MHOs have proven to be important factors in promoting long-term recovery from SUDs, fewer studies have examined what factors may influence participation in recovery practices. Using a sample of community-based Narcotics Anonymous members from 26 U.S. states, the relationships between stress and engagement in various recovery practices are examined from the perspective of a psychobiological, SUD-specific stress and coping framework. It is hypothesized that the relationship between stress and recovery practice engagement is moderated by abstinence duration, such that individuals at lower levels of abstinence duration would have fewer coping resources to mitigate stress and therefore would evidence a greater association between stress and engagement in higher levels of recovery practices. Results indicated the stress-recovery practice involvement relationship was not moderated by abstinence duration, and stress was not significantly associated with any recovery practices. However, helpfulness of social support received from individuals in recovery, abstinence duration, neuroticism, and substance use severity all significantly predicted recovery practice involvement. Gaining additional understanding of mechanisms that influence recovery involvement will allow clinicians and researchers to enhance interventions and facilitate involvement in beneficial aspects of recovery programs.

Brain, behavioral, and affective correlates of recovery from Alcohol Use Disorders

Thompson, Benjamin L. 02 June 2020 (has links)
Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs) generally are understood as disordered behaviors, and recovery from AUDs frequently is regarded in terms of positive and constructive changes in those behaviors. However, a large proportion of recovering individuals describe the experience of recovery from AUDs as consisting of both behavioral and affective changes. The affective changes that characterize recovery have been referred to as constituting “emotional sobriety,” which can be understood as a type of dynamic equilibrium with respect to the variability of the valence and intensity of affective experiences. Here, we describe neuroanatomical and behavioral correlates of emotional sobriety, as well as sex differences, through three independent but complimentary studies. In Study 1, we examined the association between the duration of abstinence (DOA) from alcohol and volumetric measures of the Brain Reward System (BRS) and its subregions, among groups of normal control (NC; n = 60) and AUD participants (n = 60). We found volumetric differences of BRS regions known to be involved in affective processing in association with different DOA. For example, long-term abstainers (greater than five years) exhibited less volume in the cingulate cortex, relative to NCs, and AUD women exhibited higher insular volume than AUD men in association with abstinence. In Study 2, we examined the association between abstinence and differences in affective states. Short-/mid-term abstainers (less than five years) exhibited affective dysregulation, relative to NCs, whereas long-term abstainers exhibited relatively normal affective states. AUD women exhibited higher positive affect than AUD men in association with abstinence. In Study 3, we examined the independent influence of mutual-help organization (MHO) activity upon affective states, over and above the effect observed in association with abstinence. Greater degrees of MHO activity were observed to be associated with increases in measures of positive affect, and sex differences also were detected in this association, with AUD women exhibiting higher positive affect than AUD men. Altogether, the findings of this dissertation indicate that the behavioral and affective changes that characterize recovery from AUDs emerge together in a dynamic, recursive interrelationship that is mediated through discrete corresponding neuroadaptations at the level of the BRS.

IDENTIFYING THE ROLE OF FAITH AND SPIRITUALITY IN THE RECOVERY AND WELLNESS OF ALCOHOL ABUSERS

Masdeu, Andrea Elisabet 01 June 2018 (has links)
There is extensive literature available on the topic of recovery from alcohol abuse. The research focus of this study explores diverse ways in which the practice of faith and spirituality in any form have affected individuals’ recovery and wellness from a post-positivist perspective. The following question is addressed: How does faith and spirituality impact the recovery process and wellness of alcohol abusers? The study was conducted by interviewing volunteer members of three Alcoholics Anonymous mutual-help groups located in Southern California. Participants were asked 15 open ending questions interview. The study uses open and axial coding for analysis. The indirect variables (IV) for this study are faith and spirituality and the direct variables (DV) are recovery and wellness. Qualitative data has been analyzed using Nvivo data analysis software. Some of the themes that emerged from the interviews after coding were family history, willingness to recover, sense of hope, acquired coping skills, belonging to a healing community, and long-lasting sobriety. The analysis of the interviews and these themes showed a positive correlation between the practice of faith and spirituality and recovery and wellness among the pool of participants. Alcoholics with three or more years attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings reported that they earned at least one year of sobriety through being willing to recover, having a sense of hope, the practice of new skills and spiritual tools, being consistent in attending the group meetings, and being at service of other alcoholics.

The investigation was takento find out the limits and possibilities of this homophobia combat space through the presentation and analysis of categories and social conventions that merge there. From the theoretical field of gender and post-structuralistsexuality, it was sought to investigate the relations between families and homosexual/transgender, particularly the lives of the parents with the objective of comprehending and integrating their children. Because learning and investigating this relationship space is a process that cannot be measured to quantifiable variables, this research is qualitative. The methodological work was accomplished through the bibliographical research of documents and field studies, using the following procedures: documental analysis, interviews, prioritizing the participating observation and speech quantitative analysis in the perspective of events that took place in the maternity. The most difficult elements of this journey is the binary speech inheritance – man/woman, male/female, straight/homo – produced and reproduced daily inside the homophobic speech as in those that in some way are favorable to gender diversity and sexual orientation. The difficulties felt and supposedly faced by the GPH parents and the categories and social conventions mobilized in this journey were considered to be linked to differences built – social and culturally – translated in power relationships that rank gender, rendering inferior all forms that do not correspond to the linearity of sex, gender, desire and sexual practice. The implementation and participation at the GPH Sorocaba shown, not only the strength of heteronormativity, but also that the different fugitive form of being and living the genders and sexualities, generally not accepted but tolerated, highlighting that there is no social convention detachment in this context. At the same time, the attribution of new senses, the questioning of built “truths” that, for a long time, were naturalized and reproduced by these LGBT parents shows that public policies aimed to homophobic confrontation in family context have an important role to mitigate it.

Figueir?, Rafael de Albuquerque 26 June 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-17T15:38:46Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 AnaKS.pdf: 949155 bytes, checksum: 510b8189ff7d40e57f75385d069921bc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-06-26 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico / The research objective is explore practices to mutual help between CAPS users from the east and west regions of the city of Natal, RN, in Brazil. In the mental health field, we observe the care from substitutive services is based on technical knowledge where the person of the mental health professional is predominant. The Brazilian psychiatry reform invests in equipments and mental health care protocols, but it is necessary to invest more vigorously in new strategies and actors capable of obtaining resources to achieve this goal, such as the users. If one cornerstone of the psychiatric reform consists of changing the type of relationship established with the person with mental disorders, why this relationship, nowadays, is still dominated by technique and unevenness, where on one side we have a person who knows something and who needs take care of someone, and on other side we have another who knows nothing and thus needs to be cared for? Starting from this problematization of the traditional methods of health/mental health care, an attempt was made to investigate in what ways the mutual help practices between people with mental disorders can realize potential avenues not yet explored within the scope of psychiatric reform. The objective of this research was to map possible mutual help practices among the users, and the technical understanding of such practices. For that, we took part in the daily activities of the CAPS, mapping the experiences of mutual help among users. In addition, we accompanied the users in external activities (such as return home, trips, etc), and we had roundtables with the professionals. The research was guided by theoretical methodological references of the institutional analysis. The results pointed to a lack of behaviors of mutual help or support among users, something that can probably be explained by the service work dynamics, as well as the relationship between technicians and users, which has a tendency to create hurdles for meetings among users, as well as being non-conducive to theirempowerment / Essa pesquisa objetivou investigar pr?ticas de ajuda m?tua entre usu?rios dos CAPS leste e oeste da cidade de Natal-RN.

Méris Gutjahr 30 December 2010 (has links)
Most cases of people using some kind of psychoactive substance elapses from the expectation of obtaining some benefit from it, by the pleasure experience or pain relief. Many of those people become dependent along life and many of them will need some kind of treatment to get to stop using psychoactive substances. The use of psychoactive substances causes great changes in the social and family relationships and even physical and neurological changes in the own user. Several treatment modalities exist, and they may be effective or not. Who basically determines the effectiveness of the treatment is the dependent, for his own wish of wanting to stop using psychoactive substances. However, it is possible that external elements are risk factors for the relapse or serve as protection. The social reinsertion, when well worked, already during the internment, it can be protection factor for maintenance of the abstinence. The recovery that only focuses the abstinence, without worrying with the social environment, the life and attitudes changes tends to not to have so much success. The social nets acted in the potential of the family, of the groups of mutual help and of the religious community, when well articulate, prepared and connected they are preventive of the relapse.
