The Relationship of Temperament and Extraversion-Introversion to Selected Group counseling Outcome Measures

The problem of this study was the determination of the relationship between Myers-Briggs personality temperament and extraversion-introversion, and group counseling norms, as reflected by the group counseling outcome measures: Survey of Attraction to Group, self and leader-report Interpersonal Relationship Rating Scale (IRRS), and Sociometric Choice Status Survey. The Mvers-Briggs Temperament Indicator (MBTI) and the four outcome measures were administered to a sample population of 103 graduate and undergraduate counselor education students after completion of a semester-long group counseling experience. Fifteen groups of five to nine members were surveyed. It was expected that group members whose temperaments were compatible with group counseling norms would be more likely to receive confirmation, support, and acceptance in the group, be attracted to the group, receive higher leader and self-report ratings of interpersonal skills, and be more highly valued by other members than would members whose temperaments were incompatible with group norms. It was also thought that extraverts were more likely to be attracted to the group, receive higher self and leader ratings of interpersonal skills, and to be more highly valued by other members than were introverts. No significant relationship was found between temperament and the four outcome measures. Possible explanations for this finding were discussed. However, mean scores for extraverts were significantly higher than mean scores for introverts on the Survey of Attraction to Group and leader-report interpersonal Relationship Rating Scale instruments. A related finding was that the NF temperament was overrepresented in the sample population of counselor education students by a factor of four. The INFP type was overrepresented by a factor of 16.5, and the ENFP type had the highest frequency of occurrence. Together, INFPs and ENFPs constituted 34 percent of the sample. In the general population, INFPs and ENFPs would be expected to account for only six percent of the total.

A Comparison of the Cognitive Style Similarity and Communication Style Adjustment Index Methods to Study Counseling Supervision Performance

This study was designed to examine two questions. First, does increasing Myers-Briggs Type similarity correlate with improved performance by counselor supervisor/supervisee dyads? Second, is the Communication Style Adjustment Index superior to the cognitive style scale matching procedure as a method of quantifying MBTI similarity in dyads? Sixty-eight supervisor/supervisee dyads were recruited from University of North Texas Counselor Education Master's level practicum classes. Supervisee class rankings and supervisor performance ratings were correlated with the dyads' MBTI similarity as measured by the Communication Style Adjustment Index and the cognitive style matching procedure. While none of the hypotheses were supported it was noted that there was interaction approaching significance between dyadic similarity using the Communication Style Adjustment Index and supervisor performance ratings.

An investigation into the relationships between job satisfaction, temperament type, and selected demographic variables among West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers

The purposes of this study were to: (a) determine the distribution of personality temperament types of the study population of West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers, (b) determine the degree of job satisfaction expressed by West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers, (c) determine the distribution of job satisfaction among West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers by temperament type, (d) determine the distribution of West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers’ temperament types by selected demographic variables, and (e) determine the relationship between West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers’ satisfaction and selected demographic variables. The study population of 63 vocational agriculture teachers who attended the 1988 West Virginia Vocational Conference were each provided with a packet of questionnaires. Temperament types were determined using Form G of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and job satisfaction by the short form of the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ). Demographics were surveyed using an instrument developed for that purpose by the researcher. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS-X). Frequencies, means, and correlation coefficients (Pearson Product Moment and Kendall Tau) were the procedures utilized to answer the research questions. Major conclusions were as follows: (a) the majority of West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers were of the sensing-judging temperament type and the smallest group was the intuitive type, (b) West Virginia agriculture teachers were more satisfied with intrinsic than extrinsic job factors, (c) overall, West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers were satisfied with intrinsic job factors and moderately satisfied with their work in terms of general satisfaction, (d) West Virginia teachers were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with extrinsic job factors, (e) teachers of the sensing-perceiving temperament type were the least satisfied on extrinsic and general job factors, (f) West Virginia teachers of the sensing-judging type were the oldest teachers and sensing-perceiving were the youngest, (g) teachers with sensing personality styles were more likely to hold advanced degrees than those with intuitive temperament types, (h) there was little relationship between the variables of age, educational level, years of experience, or number of teachers in a department and job satisfaction of West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers, (i) married West Virginia vocational agriculture teachers were more satisfied with their jobs than single teachers, and (j) teachers with intuitive-thinking personality types had the least teaching experience of the four Keirsey temperament types. / Ed. In current times, to function successfully in the work environment, the ability to use a computer is essential. The introduction of computers into organisations has often met with resistance. The reason for this resistance must be identified and overcome if businesses are to realise the productivity gains of full computer usage. On the basis of the abovementioned problem the objective of this study is to test the relationship between age, sex, locus of control and personality type and attitudes toward computer use. A theoretical investigation was carried out to gather information on the variables under study which was used to compare with the results of the empirical study. From this study of 68 white collar respondents from a financial institution it can, in general, be concluded that peoples' attitude toward the personal use of computers is positive and not affected by the individual variables tested. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Twee meetinstrumente, naamlik die lewensorientasievraelys (OLQ) en die Myers-Briggs tipe indikator (MBTI) is gebruik op die populasie van 57 bestuurders. Pearson produkmoment-korrel asiekoeffisiente is bereken en 'n variansie-ontleding is gedoen. Die resultate van hierdie studie toon dat daar nie 'n beduidende verband is tussen persoonlikheidstipes en sin vir koherensie nie. Personality has been investigated from a behaviouristic as well as a humanistic paradigm and sense of coherence from a salutogenic paradigm. This study has been done on persons on middle management level in a financial institution of which the total population has been approached in a given geographical area. Two measuring instruments, namely the Orientation To Life Questionnaire (OLQ) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) have been used on the population of 57 managers. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient has been calculated and a variation analysis has been done. The results of this study show that there is no significant relation between personality types and sense of coherence. Using Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicators to Predict High School Student Performance in an Educational Video Game

Educational video games have proven a useful tool for educators, offering experiential pedagogy in a variety of fields. Predicting the success of a video game in engaging students and motivating them to work with relevant material is problematic. One approach was attempted through administering the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator to 42 high school students and observing subsequent voluntary performance on a popular mathematics video game throughout one semester. Game dynamics matching certain personality elements of the students generally correlated between learning preferences in the classroom and in the online gaming environment. Students who enjoyed group dynamics in classroom settings likewise indicated enthusiasm for the group dynamics in game play. Those students preferring structured learning environments may prefer less open ended virtual learning gaming environments. Since the game incorporated multiple choice questions and rewarded correct choices made quickly, those students with personality styles in which questions are carefully considered before answering suffered in points scored compared to those used to making fast intuitive choices in exam settings. Additional studies, including those with larger populations and different types of video games, are needed for more definite conclusions.

Words and phrases used in written communication by eight personality types as measured by the Myers-Briggs type indicator : a contribution to the theory

Written communication is an integral part of any organisation regardless of size or the nature of its business. The writer chooses words that should be understood by the readers. However, these words have been chosen based on a variety of factors, one of which is personality type, and the writer's personality type may differ from that of the readers. The research question underpinning this study is - In what ways, if at all, do personality types (as determined by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and most frequently found in management positions), select and use different words and phrases when writing business communication? To investigate this question, the psychological type theory of Jung, the personality type theory of Briggs and Myers, and organisational communication theory are applied. The methodology used is descriptive research with the documents analysed using content analysis, employing NUD.IST Vivo in conjunction with manual assessment. The research findings confirm that each personality type does use different words, validating personality type theory and therefore, making a contribution to the expanding body of research in this field. The knowledge gained from this study has significance in areas related to organisations as well as education and communication theory.
