Using palynological modern analogues to locate a buried dikeland soil in a recovering Bay of Fundy salt marsh

Graf, Maria-Theresia January 2004 (has links)
The upper Bay of Fundy's Cumberland Basin contains an estimated 16,500 hectares of salt marsh, nearly all of which have been diked and converted to agricultural lands since the arrival of the Acadians in the late 17 th century. John Lusby Marsh is a 600 ha salt marsh that was diked and farmed for approximately 250 years, until dikes breached in the late 1940s and the marsh was restored to tidal conditions. A sediment core that contained the reclamation surface was extracted in John Lusby Marsh, and a trial set of eight fossil pollen spectra was compared to the modern analogues. Discriminant analysis classified the fossil samples into a plausible sequence of historic land uses which included phases when the marsh was diked and farmed. A comparison of the soil characteristics and pollen spectra from this study to those in a previously published study of a nearby salt marsh at Amherst N.S. suggest that flooding of a dikeland was misinterpreted as a sudden increase in the rate of sea level rise. Historical air photos support this conclusion by showing that the sampling location was indeed diked and farmed before the 1940s.

Encounters with tall sails and tall tales : Mi'kmaq society, 1500-1760

Wicken, William C. (William Craig) January 1994 (has links)
This thesis examines the history of the Mi'kmaq people inhabiting Kmitkinag (Nova Scotia) and Unimaki (Cape Breton Island) from before contact to 1760. While contact precipitated change in Mi'kmaq society, the process was gradual, the result of the particular historical circumstances in which interactions between the two societies evolved. In the late seventeenth century, the Mi'kmaq established an alliance with the French Crown, made possible by previous social and economic relationships between Mi'kmaq families and French traders, fishermen and settlers. As European settlement increased and imperial rivalry in North America intensified in the eighteenth century, tensions emerged in the alliance, revealing the cultural differences between the Mi'kmaq and France's subjects. The thesis demonstrates that economic and political factors were more important than national identity in influencing the texture of Mi'kmaq-European relations.

Planning for Healthy Communities in Nova Scotia: The current state of practice.

Howell, Alan 05 February 2013 (has links)
There is a growing recognition of the importance of the built environment in mediating people’s health related decisions, such as whether to walk rather than drive, or what types of food to purchase. The built environment has been identified as a significant determinant of health by the World Health Organization and many other organizations across the globe. This has spurred research on how and to what extent community design impacts health. Most research in Canada has been focused on major urban centres. Research in rural contexts on the connection between planning and health is limited. Despite much research on land-use and design to support healthy communities, how planners interpret the application of this research within the social, political, and jurisdictional confines of their planning practice is largely unexamined. Through an online survey and 10 semi-structured interviews with planners in Nova Scotia, the question of whether and how rural planners should address health issues is explored. The intention of this research is to better understand the connection rural planners see between their planning practice and health issues in their communities. This research found that planners indicated that health is important to address in planning practice, which confirms recent national level research. However, each respondent’s interpretation of health and how it related to planning practice was slightly different. Working with public health workers and agencies was supported as a way to improve community health, but most participants saw themselves as consultants to public health staff concerning projects and initiatives to support healthy communities rather than as collaborators. Provincial government “silos” were cited as the biggest barrier to implementation of planning practices to address health issues like physical inactivity. Results confirm what has been identified in the literature as barriers to rural planners addressing community health issues.

The development of an estimation method for the saturated hydraulic conductivity of selected Nova Scotia soils /

Murray, Gordon Bruce January 1991 (has links)
An estimation method for predicting the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) of the soil was developed for common Nova Scotia soil types by examination of historical Ksat records. Detailed statistical analysis was performed to develop useful predictive models for Ksat based on soil physical properties and to determine the confidence limits for specific horizon-soil type combinations. Sensitivity analysis of the Hooghoudt equation was then performed to establish Ksat classes to which the confidence limits could be assigned to complete the development of the estimation method. / Model development processes proved unsuccessful due to the influence of factors not considered by the model due to their qualitative nature. Independent field testing of the estimation method with respect to core and Guelph permeameter measurement techniques produced measured values within the same class as the estimated value 34% of the time for both techniques and values within one estimated class or less 70 and 76% of the time for core and permeameter techniques respectively.

January 2017 (has links)
With the prospect of influencing the formulation of official cultural policies, several social scientists, writers, artists and activists of the UP member parties sought to postulate their bases, revealing heterogeneous and even contradictory positions in the discussions about the role that the “workers of culture” should play on the Chilean way to socialism. Focusing on the cultural debate within the left, the present thesis seeks to map it in order to situate the discourses and the artistic production linked to the Chilean New Song movement (NCCh), in order to demonstrate that, in the context studied, the musicians were part of the commited intelligentsia. The analysis was based mainly on the government-friendly press and the discs released between 1970 and 1973, verifying how the main trends observed in the cultural debate were manifested in the movement; the extent to which the positions defended by the musicians have been in tune with governmental purposes; and if they have in fact influenced the cultural policies debated and pursued by the UP between 1970 and 1973. From that, we sought to understand what elements contributed to the identification of the NCCh with the new values proposed by the political leaders, allowing the movemen... (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The objective of this study is to understand the school administration in the work of Lourenço Filho in the context of the organization of the "New Shool", from 1920 to 1945. It starts from the first teaching experience of Lourenço Filho in the early 1920s at the "Shool Normal" of Piracicaba in São Paulo, until the end of its activities in the direction of INEP, in 1945. Using bibliographical and documentary research were analyzed original records of the author himself, as well as productions about his legacy for education. Among the main sources are publications in the form of books, articles, reports, speeches, correspondence, among others, which in turn record the thinking and actions of this intellectual of education that is the focus of this investigation. Initially, the family, cultural and work relations of Lourenço Filho is presented, situating them in their respective historical context, and then exploring their thinking about the problem of popular education, based on their public manifestations deriving from their functions in educational administration. In the sequence, the participation of Lourenço Filho in the "Escolanovista" ideary and the several reforms that composed the Movement of Educational Renewal that marked the History of Education, during the period under study, is presented. Considering the link between "Escolanovista" thinking and the problem of social organization, the conception of organization for the intellectual of education is related to the problem of the insertion of scientific administration in school. Some considerations and limits on the Movement of Educational Renewal are also punctuated, based on observations of scholars of the period. In order to understand how the educational programs in the Lourenço Filho trajectory were delineated, the focus was on his teaching experience in Piracicaba, at the school administration in the... / The present work is about existential experiments carried out by wealthy youngsters living in New Delhi regarding romance and sexuality. The thesis focuses on a liminal period of these young persons lives, which are the years immediately before marriage. While living the expectations and anxieties concerning the marital alliance a number of these persons experience tabooed and secret pre-marital romances hidden from parents and community, since marriages are ideally and normatively arranged. The positive valorisation of the idea of love as a prelude for marriage to some of these youngsters deserved a prominent attention in the investigation that is also aimed to analyse how the romances experienced by the interlocutors in the fieldwork play a role in the individuation process in their formation as persons.
