The Impact of naming practices among North American Indians on name authority controlExner, Frank Kepler 13 May 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to discover the impact of naming practices among North American Indians on name authority control. In order to address all the aspects, the main problem was divided into the following subproblems: 1. What are the naming practices among North American Indians? 2. Are North American Indian names found in the publication environment? 3. Is it necessary to standardize North American Indian names? 4. What are the authority control rules for North American Indian names and are they adequate? 5. How are North American Indian names presented in national authority files? North American Indian names showed three different forms: European, traditional, and mixed. Name sequences and name sets were also identified. If these name sequences and sets are found in the publication environment, provision should be made for the name forms in authority control systems. All of the sample North American Indian name forms (as well as names sets) were found in the identified academic texts, popular books, children’s books, and textbooks. So these forms and sequences had to either fit the current authority control system or the system would have to be modified to meet the new names. The thesis documented how Native American Indian name forms present specific problems of standardization. The necessity of addressing these problems was confirmed. The rules in two of the central authority control reference sources, AACR2R and Names of persons: national usages for entry in catalogues, were examined. Deficiencies were identified with regard to North American Indian names and changes suggested. Presentation of North American Indian names in national bibliographies was a final test to determine the impact of North American Indian names on name authority control. The forms of North American Indian names in the national bibliographies studied varied substantially, which is an indication of the lack of standardization of the names. / Thesis (DPhil (Information Science))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Information Science / unrestricted

The influence of endorsed professional surfers on consumer attitude towards surf brandsGreybe, Frikkie January 2011 (has links)
Sport, with the help of the media, plays a huge role in today’s society. Sport fans are following their favourite athlete and teams religiously as they compete locally and internationally. Over a century ago, the first professional athlete was endorsed. Since then companies are investing millions of dollars in athlete endorsement to promote brand awareness under consumers. The surfing industry is no different. With the Association of Professional Surfers (ASP) world tour, the big surf companies are jumping at the opportunity to sponsor pro surfers to market their products. Previous studies have shown athletes can evoke both positive and negative attitudes towards their endorsing brand thus effecting company’s sales. The aim of this study was to research the influence these endorsed pro surfers have on consumer behaviour towards their brand in a local market. A qualitative study was done on local surfers in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Results showed that favourite surfers evoke a positive attitude towards their sponsoring brand. However this influence does not seem to be as significant as in other sports. Surf companies within the industry should be aware of the big influence age has on the consumers behaviour and that different age groups follow different surfers. Companies should choose to sponsor professional surfers that fit the image of the company and the products, not necessarily the professional surfer who performs the best. Using professional surfers in advertising of products does create better brand awareness, but endorsed professional surfers are not likely to change consumer’s perceptions of the endorsing brand’s products.

Le choix du prénom chez le trans / The choice of the first name in the transNúñez González, Elizabeth 29 November 2018 (has links)
The choice of the first name in the trans, is a thesis that makes approximations to the trans question from the psychoanalytic clinic proposed by Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan. To the main question that gives rise to this investigation - how is it that a person can change their name (and sex / gender)? -, one more is added, which aims to ask whether it is justified or not -and why- continue making a structural differentiation based on the criteria of psychoanalysis. In the tension between these two questions lies the author's effort to formulate a reflection that refers to psychoanalytic theory but that takes root in what interrogates the theory, and even discusses it based on the complexity of clinical encounters with transgender people. The whole of the research is based on three working groups: psychiatry and queer theory of the United States; psychiatry, sexology and feminism of Mexico, and psychoanalysis of France.Specifically in relation to the teaching of Lacan, considering that the specificity of the work appeals to the question of the choice of the first name, the period to which it is circumscribed goes from 1961 -Year in which his seminar begins, The identification- to 1965 -that dedicated to the crucial problems for psychoanalysis-, a period in which Lacan works with greater emphasis, the question of the proper name. This necessary delimitation does not exclude, however, when it was necessary, the presence of links to other moments of its teaching, taking into account the context of them and the pertinence within the development. The structure of this research consists of eight chapters, which are divided into two sections: from the first to the fourth, the theoretical elements - theoretical framework - that will support the second section, which goes from chapter five to eight, where it is specifically developed the theme of the first name and its choice in trans people

Особенности сравнения китайских и русских имен : магистерская диссертация / Peculiar properties of comparing Chinese and Russian namesЛи, Ц., Li, Jin January 2021 (has links)
In “Iliad” Homer said, “There are no nameless people among living ones and there cannot be: at the very first moment after birth, everyone, poor and noble, receives the Name, as a sweet gift, from his loved ones.” The work presents research in the field of anthroponymy, the study of proper names in China and Russia. The relevance of the research topic is determined by the need to develop various areas in the humanities. In particular, through in-depth systematic comparative analysis and research of Chinese and Russian names, it is possible to expand and enrich research on naming, see the deep cultural connotations of China and Russia, and eliminate prejudices and negative factors in intercultural communication. The aim of the work is to study the features of word-building and translation of Chinese and Russian proper names (anthroponyms) in the context of intercultural interaction.

The Divine Name in Early Judaism: Use and Non-Use in Aramaic, Hebrew, and GreekMeyer, Anthony January 2017 (has links)
During the Second Temple period (516 BCE–70 CE) a series of developments contributed to a growing reticence to use the divine name, YHWH. The name was eventually restricted among priestly and pious circles, and then disappeared. The variables are poorly understood and the evidence is scattered. Scholars have supposed that the second century BCE was a major turning point from the use to non-use of the divine name, and depict this phenomenon as a linear development. Many have arrived at this position, however, through only partial consideration of currently available evidence. The current study offers for the first time a complete collection of extant evidence from the Second Temple period in Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek in order answer the question of how, when, and in what sources the divine name is used and avoided. The outcome is a modified chronology for the Tetragrammaton’s history. Rather than a linear development from use to avoidance, the extant evidence points to overlapping use and non-use throughout most of the Second Temple period. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
