Predation and antipredator tactics of nesting black brant and lesser snow geese

Coloniality and nest defence were examined in black brant <i>Branta bernicla nigricans</i> and lesser snow geese Chen caerulescens caerulescens. Increased nest density had no effect on nest survival, egg survival, or likelihood of partial clutch predation in snow geese. In brant, nest survival declined as nest density increased in 1992 and with increased distance from shore in 1993. Brant with conspecific nearest neighbours were less likely to suffer partial clutch predation in 1993, but not in 1992. Egg survival in brant increased with nest density in 1993, but decreased as density increased in 1992, however, the decrease occurred only in nests with three or four eggs. Nesting at high densities, in central positions, or far from shorelines commonly travelled by glaucous gulls <i>Larurs hyperboreus</i> and parasitic jaegers <i>Stercorarius parasiticus</i>, the primary egg predators in this study, did not provide geese with a nest or egg survival advantage because effects were lacking in snow geese and were inconsistent and contradictory in brant. Female snow geese had very high nest attendance and both sexes had high territory attendance so snow goose nests were rarely unattended during incubation. Brant had lower nest attendance than snow geese, and due to a lack food near their nests, brant left their territories to feed resulting in lower territory attendance as well. Although male brant were capable of defending the nest from avian predators and usually remained on their territories when females were absent, males were less effective defenders than incubating females. Increased vigilance and decreased resting by female brant as incubation progressed provided support for the prediction, from parental investment theory, that nest guarding effort would increase with offspring age, but there were no changes in male brant or in snow geese. However, declining nest and territory attendance by female brant and males of both species contradicted predictions from parental investment theory but were consistent with an increased need to forage as nutrient reserves declined through incubation as expected due to energetic constraints.

Therefore, it was verified the occupation and emergency of bees which nesting in trap-nests and assessed the aspects of the structure of such nests, sex ratio, mortality, preference for different kinds of substrates and diameters besides the presence of natural enemies of these species in four areas of the region, aiming their use in pollination management programs. The samples were carried out using three types of trap-nests: buds of dried bamboo, cardstock tubes and rational boxes. In the four areas of humid mountain forest studied were occupied 34 artificial nests by bees. Six species of nesting bees were sampled, distributed in five genera (Centris, Mesocheira, Euglossa, Megachile and Coelioxys) and two families (Apidae and Megachilidae). Out of the total of nests recorded with emergency it was obtained 139 individuals, being 131 bees and 8 coleopterans. In the 34 nests obtained, 162 bee brood cells were built, with the number of cells per nest-trap ranging from 1 to 13 brood cells and the length of these ranging from 2.4 to 14 cm. Thirteen nests were parasitized by hymenopterans (Apidae and Megachilidae) and coleopterans (Meloidae), resulting in a parasitism rate of 38.2% of nests founded. In addition, mortality has occurred from unknown causes in 29.4% of subjects before reaching adult stage. The bees nested in the three types of traps available, being buds of dried bamboo the most widely used by the species of bees to build their nests (p <0.05), corresponding to 82% out of the total used. The bees showed a greater preference for nesting into holes with smaller diameters. It is concluded that the data presented are important for the performance of practices that aim at maintenance and conservation of these species, and may be useful for pollination services of native and agricultural plants of that region. / O objetivo desta tese foi estudar a estrutura da comunidade de abelhas que nidificam em cavidades preexistentes em resquícios de Mata Atlântica na região do maciço de Baturité – Ceará. Para tanto foram verificados a ocupação e emergência de abelhas que nidificam em ninhos-armadilha, bem como avaliados os aspectos sobre a estrutura dos ninhos, razão sexual, mortalidade, preferência por diferentes tipos de substratos e diâmetros além da presença de inimigos naturais dessas espécies, em quatro áreas da região, visando sua utilização em programas de manejo de polinização. As amostragens foram realizadas utilizando três tipos de ninhos-armadilha: gomos de bambu secos, tubos de cartolina e caixas racionais. Nas quatro áreas de mata serrana úmida estudadas foram ocupados 34 ninhos artificiais pelas abelhas. Foram amostradas seis espécies de abelhas nidificantes, distribuídas em cinco gêneros (Centris, Mesocheira, Euglossa, Megachile e Coelioxys) e duas famílias (Apidae e Megachilidae). Do total de ninhos registrados com emergência foram obtidos 139 indivíduos, sendo 131 abelhas e 8 coleópteros. As abelhas revelaram uma maior preferência de nidificação em orifícios com diâmetros menores. Conclui-se, que os dados apresentados são importantes para realização de práticas que objetivem a manutenção e conservação dessas espécies, podendo também serem úteis para serviços de polinização de plantas nativas e agrícolas da região.

Vybrané aspekty hnízdní biologie potápky roháče (Podiceps cristatus) ve vztahu k prostředí / The selected aspects of nesting biology of Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) in relation to environmental conditions

The aim of the thesis was the appraisal of Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) nesting biology aspects in relation to environmental conditions. The research took 6 months from the 2nd of April to the 2nd of October in 2013 and was realised in the Naděje fishpond system on the ponds Víra, Láska, Skutek, Dobrá Vůle, Rod and Naděje. This fishpond system is situated in CHKO Třeboňsko nearby villages Frahelž and Klec and it consists of total of 15 ponds which are used for intensive fish farming, partly for breeding of Wild Ducks for hunting purposes. The counting of birds, active searching of nests and measuring parameters of nests and eggs were carried out during the work. The nests were found on ponds Naděje, Skutek and Láska. In 2013 18 nests were measured altogether. On the fishpond Naděje 8 nests were situated, on the fishpond Láska 4 nests and on the fishpond Skutek 6 nests altogether. 13 nests of the total were found on a free water surface and 5 nests were situated in the vegetations of the Great Reedmace (Typha latifolia) at a maximum distance of 1 m from the free water surface. In 2013 64 eggs were measured altogether. On the fishpond Naděje parameters of 33 eggs were obtained, on the fishpond Láska 17 eggs and on the fishpond Skutek 14 eggs were found altogether.

The diploma thesis is focused on avian domestication and represents a complete summary of existing studies and knowledge on this topic. Domestication is a long-term process which occurs for thousands of years but its consequences are often overlooked. Without any doubts the impact of domestication on the animals is significant and there are several hypothesis presented in the related studies. Considerable part of the studies have shown the ultimate and proximate control, which is responsible for influence of the biology of the Zebra Finch (Teaniopygia guttata). Usually, the comparison of data, which was collected under the same conditions for the wild and exhibition type, was the weak spot of these studies. Theoretical part gathers some of the most important theories related to this issue. Some of them have been used in the own experiment, which took place in my private facility. Therefore, the aim of this study is to prove or disprove particular hypothesis based on the breeding of the Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata). The research took two years and according to the data, the type influences biology of these birds. The results shows that the main factor responsible for nest building, egg size, egg weight, chick weight and the fledging period is the type.

Males of some species make complex sexual displays to attract the females, and they live in the middle stratum of tropical forests. Of 51 species, 29 have their nests described, five have incubation periods descriptions, and six have nestling periods reported. The Blue Manakin, Chiroxiphia caudata, is common in humid and secondary forests of southeastern Brazil, northeastern Argentina and eastern Paraguay and its breeding biology is poorly documented. Here analyzed 36 active nests in two breeding seasons (2013/2014 and 2014/2015) in a well-preserved Brazilian Atlantic Forest continuum. Nests were swallow cups hung by their rims in horizontal forks, built in bushes or saplings, over or near forest streams. Reproductive activities were recorded from October to February and clutch sizes were invariably two eggs. Incubation period was 18 days, and nestling period was 15 - 16 days. Estimated overall nesting success, from egg-laying to fledging, was 40%, being higher than most studies on piprids that have been conducted in disturbed habitats. Ecology of Isolated Greater Sage-Grouse Populations Inhabiting the Wildcat Knolls and Horn Mountain, Southcentral Utah

Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) currently inhabit about 56% of pre-settlement distribution of potential habitat. In 2005, the Castle Country Adaptive Resources Management Local Working Group (CaCoARM) was formed to address concerns regarding local sage-grouse populations in Carbon and Emery counties. In 2006-2007, CaCoARM identified the Wildcat Knolls and Horn Mountain as areas of special concern for greater sage-grouse conservation. Both sites selected by the group were inhabited by what appeared to be small isolated sage-grouse populations. Factors limiting small isolated greater sage-grouse populations throughout its range are diverse and largely site-specific. During 2008-2009, I captured, radio-collared, and monitored 43 sage-grouse between the two populations to document their ecology and seasonal habitat use patterns. The sites are only 24 km apart, but the populations appear to be isolated from each other. Sage-grouse on Horn Mountain and Wildcat Knolls are one-stage migratory and non-migratory, respectively. Although nesting and brooding success varied between sites, my results were comparable to those published in studies throughout the species' range. Overall male survival was lower on the Wildcat Knolls than Horn Mountain (P = 0.003). Hens that selected brood sites exhibiting increased shrub cover and grass height were more successful than hens that selected sites with lower shrub cover and lower grass height. Potential nesting habitat on the Wildcat Knolls and Horn Mountain were estimated at 2,329 and 5,493 ha, respectively. Hens that selected nest sites farther from non-habitat edge were more successful than hens that selected nest sites that were closer to non-habitat edge on the Wildcat Knolls. Higher nest success observed on the Wildcat Knolls was attributed to less habitat fragmentation. Isolated populations of greater sage-grouse are more susceptible to lower amounts of genetic diversity that may lead to inbreeding depression and increased rates of disease and parasites. I collected mitochondrial DNA samples from both the Wildcat Knolls and Horn Mountain populations. Although the haplotype frequencies recorded in the Wildcat Knolls and Horn Mountain populations were low, one was shared with several Utah populations. The documented low genetic diversity (especially on Horn Mountain) confirmed the isolation suspected by the local working group. Microsatellite tests may provide insights to enhance understanding of genetic differences among sites, and assist managers in determining whether or not translocations are necessary to maintain population genetic diversity. Biologists should not only continue to take samples for genetic comparison, but also record morphometric and behavior data.

This is due to the fact that the orchid bees are the only members not clearly eusocial in corbiculate clade. In this study, the correlation between genetic relatedness and reproductive skew was investigated in the genus Euglossa, one of the five genus of Euglossini tribe, in order to support the understanding of the evolution of reproductive division of labor in Euglossini. Among the five genera of Euglossini, Euglossa is the most suitable for studies on the evolution of reproductive division of labor, because in this genus can be found solitary, communal and primitively eusocial species. Twelve nests of Euglossa cordata (Linnaeus, 1758) were analyzed. In this species, the foundation process is solitary, but small colonies are formed during nest reactivations, with females establishing different types of associations, in which their relatedness differs. During reactivations, one of the females performs oophagy and then oviposition in brood cells previously operculated by another females, consequently leaving a larger number of offspring. The behavioral analysis associated with relatedness estimates, made through the use of microsatellite markers, indicated that the dominant female perform oophagy followed by oviposition in all operculated cells by the subordinated bees. The reproductive skew was complete, regardless of the type of association established between the interacting females, and so reproductive skew and genetic relatedness was not associated in this study. Furthermore, the nesting biology of Euglossa was also studied, given the information scarcity about the nesting process in most species already described for this genus. Using the technique of trap nests, 43 nests of Euglossa were sampled. This study provides new information on the nesting biology of this genus, especially with regard to natural enemies associated with nests. / As abelhas da tribo Euglossini sempre foram consideradas promissoras para estudos sobre evolução do comportamento social e divisão de trabalho reprodutivo. Isto decorre do fato dos Euglossini serem os únicos membros não claramente eussociais entre as abelhas corbiculadas. Neste estudo, foi investigada a correlação entre parentesco genético e desvio reprodutivo em uma espécie do gênero Euglossa, um dos cinco gêneros de Euglossini, visando subsidiar o entendimento da evolução da divisão de trabalho reprodutivo na tribo. Dentre os cinco gêneros de Euglossini, Euglossa é o mais indicado para estudos sobre a evolução de divisão de trabalho reprodutivo, pois neste gênero são encontradas espécies solitárias, comunais e primitivamente eussociais. Foram analisados doze ninhos da espécie Euglossa cordata (Linnaeus, 1758). Nesta espécie, o processo de fundação dos ninhos é solitário, mas pequenas colônias são formadas durante as reativações, com as fêmeas estabelecendo diferentes tipos de associações, nas quais o parentesco entre elas é distinto. Durante as reativações, uma das fêmeas realiza oofagias, seguidas de oviposições em células anteriormente operculadas por outras fêmeas, deixando um maior número de descendentes. As análises de comportamento, associadas a estimativas de parentesco, realizadas mediante o uso de marcadores microssatélites, indicam que as fêmeas dominantes realizam oofagia, seguida de oviposição, em todas as células operculadas pelas subordinadas. O desvio reprodutivo foi completo, independentemente do tipo de associação formada entre as fêmeas reativadoras e, portanto, não houve correlação entre parentesco genético e desvio reprodutivo. Além disso, a biologia de nidificação em espécies de Euglossa foi estudada, dada a escassez de informações sobre os hábitos e características do processo de nidificação na maioria das espécies já descritas. Utilizando a técnica de ninhos-armadilha, foram obtidos 44 ninhos de Euglossa. O estudo traz novas informações sobre a biologia de nidificação no gênero, principalmente no que diz respeito aos inimigos naturais associados aos ninhos.

The samplings were carried out monthly, during 12 months, using trap-nesting (=NA) length 5, 10, 15 and 20 cm. A total of 124 nests, 591 building cells, and 479 emerging imago were sampled. There was a higher number of nesting in area I (n=86) than in area II (n=38). Centris analis Fabricius 1804, Centris tarsata Smith, 1874, and two Megachile species nested in ?rea I, being C. analis the specie with highest number of established nest (n=72, 83.7%), while other species had low nesting frequency (4%) and a higher bee richness, with six species occupying the trap-nesting. Tetrapedia diversipes Klug, 1810, established highest number of nest (n=29, 76.3%). Species used different NA size in both areas. In the area I, they nesting with higher frequency in NA with 10 cm (38%) and 15 cm (38%), while in the area II, there was cavity occupation with 20 cm (50%). Bees nested in most part of the year, except in months of autumn-winter, between April and August, when the bee nesting frequency was reduced or the activity was suspended. The natural enemies that emerged from the nests were species of Hymenoptera Coelioxoides sp, Mesocheira bicolor Fabricius, 1804, and a species of Chrysididae. The mortality rate by unknown reason in the areas I and II was 21.4% and 13.5% respectively, with higher incidence recorded to Centris analis. There was a higher mortality in smallest nests (5 cm) and there was no difference among the cavities with 10, 15, and 20 cm. / Este trabalho teve como objetivo investigar a utiliza??o de cavidades de diferentes comprimentos para confec??o de ninhos e os efeitos do tamanho da cavidade sobre a raz?o sexual e mortalidade da prole de abelhas solit?rias. O estudo foi conduzido em duas ?reas agr?colas no munic?pio de Feira de Santana, Bahia. Foram realizadas amostragens mensais durante 12 meses, usando ninhos-armadilha (NA) de comprimento 5, 10, 15 e 20 cm. Foram obtidos 124 ninhos, 591 c?lulas de cria constru?das e 479 imagos emergentes. Houve maior n?mero de nidifica??es na ?rea I (n=86) do que na ?rea II (n= 38). Centris analis Fabricius 1804, Centris tarsata Smith, 1874 e duas esp?cies de Megachile nidificaram na ?rea I, sendo C. analis a esp?cie com maior n?mero de ninhos estabelecidos (n=72, 83,7%), enquanto as outras esp?cies tiveram baixa freq??ncia de nidifica??o. A ?rea II apresentou menor freq??ncia de nidifica??o (4%) e maior riqueza de abelhas, com seis esp?cies ocupando os ninhos-armadilha. Tetrapedia diversipes Klug, 1810, estabeleceu maior n?mero de ninhos (n=29, 76,3%). As esp?cies utilizaram diferentemente os tamanhos de NA nas duas ?reas. Na ?rea I, as abelhas nidificaram com maior freq??ncia nos NA de 10 cm (38%) e de 15 cm (38%), enquanto na ?rea II houve maior ocupa??o das cavidades de 20 cm (50%). As abelhas nidificaram na maior parte do ano, com exce??o dos meses de outono-inverno, entre abril e agosto, quando a frequ?ncia de nidifica??o das abelhas foi reduzida ou a atividade foi suspensa. Os inimigos naturais que emergiram dos ninhos inclu?ram esp?cies de abelhas Coelioxoides sp, Mesocheira bicolor Fabricius, 1804 e uma esp?cie de Chrysididae. A taxa de mortalidade por causas desconhecidas nas ?reas I e II foi respectivamente 21,4% e 13,5%, com maior incid?ncia registrada em Centris analis. Houve uma maior mortalidade nos ninhos curtos (5 cm), n?o havendo diferen?a entre as cavidades de 10, 15 e 20 cm.
