Effects of low crude protein, amino acid fortified diets and neutral detergent fiber on finishing pig performance

Soto Gonzalez, Jose Alfredo January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Animal Sciences and Industry / Michael D. Tokach / Eleven experiments using 5,434 growing-finishing pigs were performed in addition to the development of a model to predict dietary NE that yields the greatest economic benefit. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of dietary phytogenics on growth and carcass performance of growing-finishing pigs. The addition of the combination of two phytogenics products (EOM 1+2) to diets improved ADFI, HCW, and carcass ADG. However, there was no evidence for treatment differences for growth or carcass performance in a second study. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of feeding high SID Trp:Lys ratios with and without Ractopamine HCl (RAC) on growth and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs. In Exp. 1, whereas increasing SID Trp:Lys ratio above 20% improved growth and carcass performance when diets contained RAC, pigs fed SID Trp:Lys ratios above 20% in diets without RAC had reduced growth and carcass performance. Contrary in Exp. 2, pigs fed increasing SID Trp:Lys in diet containing RAC did not provide further performance benefits. Three experiments were conducted to determine the optimum dietary SID Lys and CP concentrations in finishing pigs over 100 kg. The SID Lys requirement to obtain 100% of maximum response was 0.55 to 0.63% depending on the response variable. Growth and carcass performance was maximized in diets containing at least 12% dietary CP. Four experiments were conducted to determine the effects of SBM concentration and whether dEB, choline, or K are the reasons that performance is reduced when pigs over 100 kg BW are fed low CP diets. Performance was reduced as SBM concentration was reduced in the diet. Choline, K, and dEB do not appear to be the reason that performance is reduced when SBM concentration is decreased in low CP diets fed to pigs over 100 kg BW. A Microsoft Excel®-based model to predict the value of dietary NE that yields the greatest economic return to the production system was developed. Furthermore, a meta-analysis was conducted to incorporate the impact of NDF on carcass yield in the model.

Polpa cítrica úmida despectinada em substituição à polpa peletizada no desempenho de bovinos de corte confinados / Despectinated moist citrus pulp in partial replacing of pelleted citrus pulp on beef cattle performance

Jhones Onorino Sarturi 03 April 2008 (has links)
The objective of this study was evaluate despectinated citrus pulp (Braspolpa®) replacing 30% of pelleted citrus pulp in feedlot beef cattle finishing diets. In the first trial, was used despectinated citrus pulp in natura. Forty eight yearling bulls (24 Nelore and 24 Canchim), 18 months old and averaging 404 and 439 kg initial live weight for Nelore and Canchim, respectively. The animals were assigned in a randomized block design with a 2x2 factorial scheme (two breeds and two treatments) and grouped by breed and initial live weight. Experimental period lasted 92 days, with three periods. Diets contained sugar cane bagasse in natura, dried citrus pulp, soybean meal, urea, mineralvitamin mix, sodium bicarbonate, sodium monensin, and the energy sources tested (despectinated citrus pulp). In the second trial, the despectinated citrus pulp was ensiled with or without sodium benzoate (0.18% of GM). Fifty four yearling bulls (Nelore/Angus or Nelore Santa Gertrudis x Braunvieh), 16.5 months old and averaging 303 kg initial live weight. The animals were assigned in a complete randomized block design, and grouped by initial live weight. Experimental period lasted 91 days, with three periods. Diets contained sugar cane bagasse in natura, dried citrus pulp, cotton meal, urea, mineral-vitamin mix, sodium bicarbonate, sodium monensin, and the energy sources tested (despectinated citrus pulp with and without sodium benzoate). For these two trials, the rations were composed of 85% of the concentrate and 15% of the sugar cane bagasse in natura, and were balanced according to NRC (1996) level 1, to reach isonitrogeneous with positive rumen degradable protein and metabolizable protein balances. Variables evaluated were daily weight gain (DWG, kg/day), dry matter intake (DMI, kg DM/day), feed conversion (FC, kg DMI/kg DWG), net energy for maintenance and gain values, and the ratio between calculated net energy (based on experimental data) and net energy predicted by NRC (1996), level 1 (observed/predicted). In both trials, the substitution of dried citrus pulp for despectinated citrus pulp increased the NDF and ADF intakes (P<0.01) and did not affect (P>0.05) DMI (8.05 vs. 8.13 and 7.76 vs. 7.78 kg/day for the first and second trials, respectively), DWG (1.11 vs. 1.16 e 1.27 vs. 1.36 kg/day for the first and second trials, respectively), neither FC (7.82 vs. 7.29 e 6.62 vs. 5.96 kg of DM/kg for the first and second trials, respectively). Observed values for net energies of maintenance and gain did not differ among treatments (P>0.05). According to the experimental data, the net energy relation (observed/predicted) for the PCP treatment was lower (P<0.05) than PCUD treatment (1.15; 1.39; 1.22 vs. 1.23; 1.51; 1.28 and 1.10; 1.31; 1.18 vs. 1.18; 1.45; 1.24 Mcal/kg DM of NEm, NEg and ME for the first and second trials, respectively). The partial replacing of PCP for PCUD in natura or ensiling did not change the animal performance.

Sixty nine heifers (23 NE, 23 NA and 23 NS) were used, being 12 heifers (four in each genetic group) slaughtered before the beginning of the experiment as the baseline group. Twelve heifers (four in each genetic group) were fed the level maintenance and thirty six (twelve in each genetic group) were ad libitun fed with 30 (six in each group) and 50% (six in each group) of dry matter diet in concentrate. Nine remaining animals were to digestibility trial. At the end of the experiment all these animals were slaughtered and its corporal composition and empty body weight (EBW) determined. The net energy requirements for gain were estimate as a retained energy (RE) as a function of EBW0,75 and empty body gain (EBG). The net energy requirements for maintenance were obtained as a function of heat production (HP) on metabolizable energy intake (MEI). The metabolizable energy requirements for maintenance were obtained as a function of RE and MEI. The net protein requirements for gain were estimate as retained protein (RP) as RE and EBG. The requirements of metabolizable protein for maintenance were estimate as metabolizable protein intake (MPI) as function of empty body gain (EBG). The net protein requirements for maintenance as RP as a function MPI. Chemical constituents of EBW and EBG there were not effects of genetic group (P>0.05). There were not effects of genetic group in energy and protein requirements so it’s proposed the model RE = 0.0703 * EBW0.75 * EBG1.128 for net energy requirements for gain and NPg = 197.40 * EBG – 11.14 * RE for net protein requirements for gain. The net and metabolizable energy requirements for maintenance for all group were 70.55 and 106.53 kcal/EBW0.75/day, respectively. The net protein requirements for maintenance was 1.07 g/ EBW0.75/day and the metabolizable protein requirements for maintenance were 3.88 g/EBW0.75/day for all group.

Life cycle assessment and resource management options for bio-ethanol production from cane molasses in Indonesia

Kummamuru Venkata, Bharadwaj January 2013 (has links)
The intent of this thesis is to analyse the sustainability of producing bio-ethanol from cane molasses in Indonesia and its potential to replace gasoline in the transportation sector. A field trip was conducted in East Java, Indonesia, and data was gathered for analysis. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to analyse the net emissions and energy consumption in the process chain. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the life cycle are 17.45 gCO2e per MJ of ethanol produced. In comparison to gasoline, this results in a 78% reduction in GHG emissions in the complete process chain. Net Energy Value (NEV) and Net Renewable Energy Value (NREV) were 6.65 MJ/l and 24 MJ/l. Energy yield ratio (ER) was 9.43 MJ of ethanol per MJ of fossil energy consumed in the process. Economic allocation was chosen for allocating resources between sugar and molasses. Sensitivity analysis of various parameters was performed. The emissions and energy values are highly sensitive to sugarcane yield, ethanol yield and the price of molasses. Alternative management options were considered for optimizing the life cycle. Utilizing ethanol from all the mills in Indonesia has a potential to replace 2.3% of all motor gasoline imports. This translates in import savings of 2.3 trillion IDR per year. Use of anaerobic digestion or oxidation ponds for waste water treatment is unviable due to high costs and issues with gas leakage. Utilizing 15% of cane trash in the mill can enable grid independency. Environmental impacts due to land use change (Direct & Indirect) can be crucial in overall GHG calculations. Governmental regulation is necessary to remove current economic hurdles to aid a smoother transition towards bioethanol production and utilization. / Harnessing agricultural feedstock and residues for bioethanol production - towards a sustainable biofuel strategy in Indonesia

A techno-economic analysis of a residential solar Photovoltaic system installed in 2010 : A comparative case study between California and Germany

Ravi Kumar, Swetha January 2012 (has links)
With environmental concerns and energy needs increasing, many regions in the world are promoting renewable energy technologies making use of various policy instruments. Although today the PV systems price is decreasing, which gives it a competitive edge; we see the technology still being dependent on policy instruments for its dissemination. The aim of this study is to research on whether or not a solar PV system is economically viable under certain circumstances. The study analyzes this by performing a cost beneficial analysis for the lifetime of the solar PV system making use of a discounted savings model. The systems being considered in this study are from California and Germany as these regions are leading in solar PV dissemination in their respective regions. The policies that are aiding the deployment of solar PV technologies are varied and thus this study compares benefits from different policy instrument for a residential customer investing in a solar PV system. The research objectives in this study are pursued making use of major concepts such as Grid Parity, Levelized Cost of Electricity and financial methods such as discounting. Further, to understand how the different independent variables such as retail electricity prices, PV system pricing, WACC, self-consumption rate and storage availability are having an impact and how the results change with variation in these variables, a sensitivity analysis is conducted. The results obtained in this study show that a solar PV system installed in California and Germany both make net benefits over their lifetime. When compared, the Californian solar PV system under the Net Energy Metering policy is making more net economic benefits in the range of $ 40,351 in Eureka and $53,510 in San Francisco; when compared to the German solar PV systems under the Feed in Tariff ranging $4,465 in Berlin and $11,769 in Munich. Furthermore the Californian solar PV systems still prove to be more beneficial even when compared to the German solar PV systems under the self-consumption law of the Feed in Tariff ranging $ 6,443 in Berlin and $ 13,141 in Munich. But when the self-consumption rate is increased in the German case, it is noted that the associated benefits increase. The study at hand thus results in the California Net Energy Meter policy instrument proving to be more beneficial to a residential customer than the German Feed in tariff with and without self-consumption. Another important finding made in this study is that despite the German solar PV system making lesser benefits than the Californian ones, they attain Grid Parity before the ones in California.

Towards holistic net-zero : Ecological and energy-efficientBuilding in Utsikten

Wso, Dana, Aliramaei, Saman January 2022 (has links)
Global warming is one of the biggest challenges today, and the construction sector is one of the main sectors contributing to climate change. Due to this, using environmentally friendly materials in construction is an important decision against global warming. This thesis aims to evaluate the most important building envelope components to achieve a house in Sweden to become near net-zero energy building (ZEB). Due to this, different ecological insulation materials, and window types were presented, analyzed, and evaluated to choose the most energy-efficient alternatives for the Utsikten village project. In terms of reduction of electricity bought, renewable energy on-site photovoltaic (PV) and ground source heat pump systems are used. In this study, numerical simulations for building envelope components such as windows, ground floor, external walls, and roofs were performed to evaluate the thermal performance of the components by IDA ICE and UBAKUS. The primary energy for different building cases has been calculated to evaluate thermal performance and energy classification levels to identify the most environmentally friendly solutions. There is a variation of ecological material for insulation that can be used for different parts of the building envelope. In general, ecological insulation material has less life expectancy but a much lower environmental impact compared to minerals and synthetic materials. However, there are also some limitations to using some ecological insulation materials in the ground construction. This study also shows how several pane glasses, gap dimensions, gas fill gap, and Low-E coating impact the energy performance of the windows and the building. Simple solar PV panel simulation shows that the maximum electricity production on a site is very related to orientation, tilt, and sun exposure. The result of this master thesis shows that it is possible to reach near-net-zero energy building by enhancing building envelope components and using renewable energy sources for heating, cooling, and electricity production.

A Study of Policy Base to Promote Renewable Energy Production

Wang, Hsin Pei Unknown Date (has links)
By the optimal control theory, this paper proves that policies on encouraging the production of renewable energy should be based on its net output or net energy instead of on its gross output or gross energy. Here net energy is defined as the surplus of renewable energy output minus energy input from its production. This paper first compares the optimal gross output of the renewable energy under the social optimal condition with the gross outputs under the price-based policy instrument and the quantity-based policy instrument based on net energy output and gross energy output, respectively, suggesting that policy instruments used to encourage the production of renewable energy should be based on its net output instead of on its gross output. Finally, it probes the cases of environmental externality and R&D based on the net output of renewable energy.

Natural resources and sustainable energy : Growth rates and resource flows for low-carbon systems

Davidsson, Simon January 2016 (has links)
Large-scale deployment of low-carbon energy technologies is important for counteracting anthropogenic climate change and achieving universal energy access. This thesis explores potential growth rates of technologies necessary to reach a more sustainable global energy system, the material and energy flows required to commission these technologies, and potential future availability of the required resources. These issues are investigated in five papers. Potential future growth rates of wind energy and solar photovoltaics, and the associated material requirements are explored, taking the expected service life of these technologies into account. Methodology for assessing net energy return and natural resource use for wind energy systems are analyzed. Potential future availability of lithium and phosphate rock are also investigated. Estimates of energy and materials required for technologies such as wind energy and photovoltaics vary, and depend on the assumptions made and methods used. Still, it is clear that commissioning of low-carbon technologies on the scale required to reach and sustain a low-carbon energy system in coming decades requires significant quantities of both bulk materials and scarcer resources. For some technologies, such as thin film solar cells and electric vehicles with lithium-ion batteries, availability of materials could become an issue for potential growth rates. Future phosphate rock production could become highly dependent on few countries, and potential political, social and environmental aspects of this should be investigated in more detail. Material and energy flows should be considered when analyzing growth rates of low-carbon technologies. Their estimated service life can indicate sustainable growth rates of technologies, as well as when materials are available for end-of-life recycling. Resource constrained growth curve models can be used to explore future production of natural resources. A higher disaggregation of these models can enable more detailed analysis of potential constraints. This thesis contributes to the discussion on how to create a more sustainable global energy system, but the methods to assess current and future energy and material flows, and availability of natural resources, should be further developed in the future.

Avaliação de desempenho ambiental e energético da produção de etanol de cana, milho e sorgo em uma unidade integrada, segundo a abordagem do ciclo de vida / Environmental and energy assessment of sugarcane, corn and sorghum ethanol production in an integrated plant, according to the life cycle approach.

Donke, Ana Cristina Guimarães 25 April 2016 (has links)
Ethanol is consolidated as fuel to drive light vehicles in Brazil, but for the past 40 years, only the cultivation of sugarcane has been commercially exploited for the production of this fuel. On the other hand, agricultural development has provided high yields of grain in recent decades. Corn production is distinguished by increased productivity, and can be sown as main crop or as a winter crop in rotation with soybeans. Sorghum, in turn, has a higher roughness and tolerance to drought and can act as a substitute for corn. Given this situation, ethanol plants in Mato Grosso were associated with corn and sorghum producers to include new raw materials in the fuel production process, sharing the same plant, called Integrated Plant or Plant Flex. However, the development of new technology and production sectors requires consideration of its potential energy and environmental implications. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is management tool used to evaluate potential environmental impacts associated with products, processes and services. Its main feature is to provide such an assessment in a systematic way, taking into account all stages of their life cycle. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the environmental and energy performance of ethanol production from sugarcane, corn and sorghum in the context of integrated autonomous plant, according to the life cycle approach. For that, LCA studies were conducted for each of the three products, following the guidelines of the standards ISO 14040: 2009 and ISO 14044: 2009. For environmental analysis the method of Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) Recipe midpoint was applied and for energy analysis Cumulative Energy Demand method was used, followed by the estimate of the Energy Return On Investment (EROI) for each fuel. The functional unit of the studies was 1 m³ of hydrous ethanol and the product system includes the production inputs, production of agricultural raw material, production of ethanol, cogeneration and transport stages. The results of the environmental analysis showed that the ethanol sugarcane performs better than the ethanol maize and sorghum in a greater number of impact categories. Energy analyzes have shown that the use of wood chips in cogeneration stage of corn ethanol production processes and sorghum has resulted in energy savings, but the ethanol sugarcane still performs better by using bagasse for cogeneration. In terms of EROI, the sugarcane ethanol provided 9.77 units of energy for every unit consumed, corn ethanol provided 2.68 and sorghum ethanol provided 3.10.

Kontorskyla : Kan borrhålskyla ersätta en kylmaskin?

Eriksson, Martin, Göräng, Mikael January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to compare cooling from a refrigeration machine and a borehole system. These technologies are chosen because they are observed as each other’s opposites. A refrigeration machine is associated with a requirement of large amounts of electric energy, while the borehole system is often seen as free cooling. The study is performed on a fictional building located in Västerås. The building has an area of 2 000 m² and a cooling requirement of 50 W/m². In the scenario studied the building is already equipped with a refrigeration machine, the goal is to examine if it can be motivated to remove this machine and replace it with a borehole system. The chosen environmental impact categories are embodied energy and carbon dioxide equivalents. In order to evaluate the embodied energy, EROI (Energy return on investment) is used to calculate the energy saved by removing the refrigeration machine. For the refrigeration machine most of the energy used is during the operation phase, this is because of the compressor which is used to produce cooling energy. In the borehole system 40 % of the energy used is during the operation phase and 60 % during the manufacturing phase. The drilling used 8.1 m3 diesel fuel, which dominated both the embodied energy and the carbon dioxide emissions of the borehole system. Results show that after only 4.5 years after installation the borehole system has less total embodied energy. EROI was then calculated as saved energy divided by invested energy and the result was an EROI of 7.4. The carbon dioxide emissions from both systems are heavily dependent on the CO2-emissions from electricity generation. Though, if a refrigeration machine were used during the buildings entire lifetime the leakage of refrigerant would be big enough to counteract this dependence.
