Emergent structure formation of the actin cytoskeleton

Huber, Florian 09 February 2012 (has links)
Dabei wird ersichtlich, dass entstehende Netzwerke in ihrer Architektur direkt die zuvor herrschenden Anisotropien der Filamentlösung widerspiegeln.:1 Introduction 1 2 General background 7 2.1 General concepts 7 2.1.1 Coarse-graining as hierarchical reduction 8 2.1.2 Functional modules and redundancies 10 2.1.3 Emergence 11 2.1.4 Self-organization and self-assembly 13 2.1.5 Bottom-up and top-down 13 2.2 The cytoskeleton 15 2.2.1 From actin monomers to filaments 16 2.2.2 Accessory proteins and actin networks 21 2.3 Biopolymer pattern formation 25 2.3.1 Random networks and nematic phases 25 2.3.2 Linker and motor induced networks 28 3 Lamellipodial actin network formation 33 3.1 Background: crawling cell migration 33 3.1.1 Leading edge actin structures 35 3.1.2 Lamellipodial self-organization into oriented branches? 40 3.1.3 Lamellipodial modeling 41 3.1.4 Beyond the lamellipodium: adhesion and network contraction 42 3.2 Methods: lamellar treadmilling model 45 3.2.1 Assumptions 45 3.2.2 Choice of model parameters 51 3.2.3 Computer simulation (implementation) 52 3.2.4 Mathematical modeling 56 3.3 Modeling results 63 3.3.1 Reproduction of motile cell characteristics 64 3.3.2 Self-organization into lamellipodium and lamellum 65 3.3.3 Filament severing and annealing influence network properties 70 3.3.4 Unconfined network growth 74 3.4 Feasible model extensions 76 3.4.1 Alternative nucleation mechanisms 77 3.4.2 Convergence zone through myosin-driven network contraction 80 3.5 Experimental bottom-up approach 82 3.6 Discussion: Arp2/3 induced actin networks 87 4 Actin network patterns in confined systems 91 4.1 Background: counterion condensation and depletion forces 91 4.1.1 Actin, a polyelectrolyte: counterion condensation 92 4.1.2 Actin and molecular crowding: depletion forces 95 4.2 Methods: Experimental design and data analysis 97 4.2.1 Protein purification and handling 98 4.2.2 Droplet formation 98 4.2.3 Volume monitoring and pattern analysis 100 4.3 Actin pattern formation 105 4.3.1 Counterion-induced network formation 105 4.3.2 Depletion force induced network formation 111 4.4 First modeling attempts: bundling simulation 116 4.4.1 Model concept and assumptions 116 4.5 Discussion: Counterion and depletion-based network assembly 119 5 Discussion & Outlook 125 Appendix 129 A. La gestion du trafic dans les réseaux orientés contenus / Traffic management in content centric networks

Benkirane, Nada 07 March 2014 (has links)
Content Centric Network (CCN) architecture has been designed to optimize network resources and ensure greater security. The design and the implementation of this architecture are only in its beginning. This work has made some proposals in traffic management related to the internet of the future. We argue that it is necessary to supplement CCN with mechanisms enabling controlled sharing of network bandwidth by competitive flows. Traffic control is necessary to ensure low latency for conversational and streaming flows, and to realize satisfactory bandwidth sharing between elastic flows. These objectives can be realized using "per-flow bandwidth sharing". As the bandwidth sharing algorithms in the IP architecture are not completely satisfactory, we proposed the Interest Discard as a new technique for CCN. We tested some of the mechanisms using CCNx prototype software and simulations. In evaluating the performance of multi-paths we noted the role of cache performance in the choice of selected paths. In the second part, we evaluate the performance of caches using a simple approximation for LRU cache performance that proves highly accurate. As caches performance heavily depends on populations and catalogs sizes, we evaluate their performance using popularity and catalogs representing the current Internet exchanges. Considering alpha values, we observe that the cache size should be very large, which can be restrictive for caches implementation in routers. We believe that the distribution of caches on an architecture creates an excessive bandwidth consumption. Then, it is important to determine a tradeoff bandwidth/memory to determine how we should size caches and where we should place them, this amounts to evaluate differences, in cost, between architectures

Global IoT Coverage Through Aerial And Satellite Network

Ahmed, Faizan January 2020 (has links)
Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine Type Communication (MTC) have got more momentum in the last few years but still, need to be penetrated with their full swing in our daily life. This can be possible with general framework that provides global network coverage. Non-terrestrial networks comprised of satellites and aerial platforms are expected to provide next-generation communication services in underserved and un-served areas by ensuring the quality of service that cannot be covered by existing terrestrial networks owing to economical and geographical limitations. The aim of this thesis is to formulate a set of massive and critical MTC use cases such as global environment monitoring, tracking of shipping containers and smart agriculture, and assess their comprehensive requirements like data size, sensor node density and uplink capacity and discuss possible network architectures and deployments focusing on satellite or aerial networks. A rigorous discussion on different network architectures to address the requirements have been presented, that involve (1) Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite based network, (2) High Altitude Platform (HAP) based network, and (3) HAP and UAV based network. The proposed network architectures have been simulated and analyzed using MATLAB tools for respective use cases in terms of required number of satellites or aerial platforms. The criteria for selection of network architectures for the use cases are based on the minimum number of satellites or aerial platforms. The results show that LEO constellation consisting of 260 satellites are feasible concerning deployment and management for global environment monitoring network. Similarly, 1440 LEO satellites provide global coverage for tracking of shipping containers. Smart agriculture use case requires high throughput, and hence HAP and UAV integrated network architecture is more realistic for a fully autonomous system as compared to other network architectures. Cooperative control and management of set of agricultural machines can be performed at the UAV. Simulation results show that single UAV can be capable of commanding and controlling the agricultural smart machines in one square kilometer crop field and can send the summary of events to the central station via a HAP.

A Hybrid Topological-Stochastic Partitioning Method for Scaling QoS Routing Algorithms

Woodward, Mike E., Gao, Feng January 2007 (has links)
No / This paper presents a new partitioning strategy with the objective of increasing scalability by reducing computational effort of routing in networks. The original network is partitioned into blocks (subnetworks) so that there is a bi-directional link between any two blocks. When there is a connection request between a pair of nodes, if the nodes are in the same block, we only use the small single block to derive routings. Otherwise we combine the two blocks where the two nodes locate and in this way the whole network will never be used. The strategy is generic in that it can be used in any underlying routing algorithms in the network layer and can be applied to any networks with fixed topology such as fixed wired subnetworks of the Internet. The performance of this strategy has been investigated by building a simulator in Java and a comparison with existing stochastic partitioning techniques is shown to give superior performance in terms of trade-off in blocking probability (the probability of failure to find a path between source and destination satisfying QoS constraints) and reduction of computational effort.

Design and Implementation of a Communication Protocol to Improve Multimedia QoS and QoE in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Díaz Santos, Juan Ramón 05 April 2016 (has links)
[EN] This dissertation addresses the problem of multimedia delivery over multi-hop ad hoc wireless networks, and especially over wireless sensor networks. Due to their characteristics of low power consumption, low processing capacity and low memory capacity, they have major difficulties in achieving optimal quality levels demanded by end users in such communications. In the first part of this work, it has been carried out a study to determine the behavior of a variety of multimedia streams and how they are affected by the network conditions when they are transmitted over topologies formed by devices of different technologies in multi hop wireless ad hoc mode. To achieve this goal, we have performed experimental tests using a test bench, which combine the main codecs used in audio and video streaming over IP networks with different sound and video captures representing the characteristic patterns of multimedia services such as phone calls, video communications, IPTV and video on demand (VOD). With the information gathered in the laboratory, we have been able to establish the correlation between the induced changes in the physical and logical topology and the network parameters that measure the quality of service (QoS) of a multimedia transmission, such as latency, jitter or packet loss. At this stage of the investigation, a study was performed to determine the state of the art of the proposed protocols, algorithms, and practical implementations that have been explicitly developed to optimize the multimedia transmission over wireless ad hoc networks, especially in ad hoc networks using clusters of nodes distributed over a geographic area and wireless sensor networks. Next step of this research was the development of an algorithm focused on the logical organization of clusters formed by nodes capable of adapting to the circumstances of real-time traffic. The stated goal was to achieve the maximum utilization of the resources offered by the set of nodes that forms the network, allowing simultaneously sending reliably and efficiently all types of content through them, and mixing conventional IP data traffic with multimedia traffic with stringent QoS and QoE requirements. Using the information gathered in the previous phase, we have developed a network architecture that improves overall network performance and multimedia streaming. In parallel, it has been designed and programmed a communication protocol that allows implementing the proposal and testing its operation on real network infrastructures. In the last phase of this thesis we have focused our work on sending multimedia in wireless sensor networks (WSN). Based on the above results, we have adapted both the architecture and the communication protocol for this particular type of network, whose use has been growing hugely in recent years.

Αντωνόπουλος, Χρήστος 16 January 2009 (has links)
This objective of this dissertation is the study of cross-layer approach applied on the development of distributed wireless networks with real-time response demands and scarce available resources. Furthermore, another main goal is the design and proposal of a respective network architecture aiming at optimum resource management under congestion scenarios and therefore maximization of network performance. Through various studies undertaken in the context of this dissertation the importance of the congestion problem is presented as a main factor leading the network to resource waste and saturation conditions negatively affecting all network performance metrics. Consequently, this dissertation aims in proposing a cross-layer architecture able to detect and tackle congestion phenomenon by dynamically retaining network performance at a steady state (as than is possible) where network performs optimally and resource waste in minimized. Among others, a main parameter is retaining compatibility with a wide range of widely used protocols of various layers as well compatibility concerning the coexistence in the same network of stations supporting with stations not supporting the proposed architecture. The proposed architecture is implemented in the context of widely known and used network simulator. Evaluation of this implementation through numerous simulations showed that the objectives are met since congestion phenomenon is tackled in most cases with significant benefits concerning network performance and resource management. Furthermore, due to the high parametrization degree it constitutes a very good base for future expansions.

Werapun, Warodom 27 September 2012 (has links)
With digital life enhancement, more users would like to get seamless Internet and information with any devices, at any time and from anywhere. More and more home devices need to exchange data or to control other devices. The type of services is labelled Home Service (HS) and it is deployed though a Home Network (HN). Some users need to use their HS outside their HN, some others need to interconnect other HN. Operators have to provide suitable network architectures to ensure this interconnection and to provide at the same time, scalability, remote access, easy deployment and security. Here is the topic of our work. In the fist step, we consider a practical illustration around the Next-Generation Network (NGN) and the secured services. It is the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) approach for the management of services that is generally supported by the NGN network operators. However, various network operator architectures can be developed to support these services. An alternative way is the P2P architectures. We choose to analyze and implement a centralized P2P and we compare it with the IMS solution. Several authentication mechanisms are introduced to secure the centralized P2P. An evaluation of these architectures is conducted. Since the previous solutions present some issues due to their centralized feature, we consider distributed solutions in a second step. The non-structured P2P, called pure P2P, can also support HS. Identity Based Crytography (IBC) is added to these architectures in order to offer authentication and protection to user communications. The different solutions are compared through their signaling and transmission cost. The study shows that searching step in this architecture is really costly, facing a scalability problem. Thus, we propose to use a structured P2P (called Dynamic Hash Table) for delivering HS between HN. This type of architecture is studied by IETF with the REsource Location And Discovery (RELOAD) Base Protocol. This solution is implanted and deployed here to be a proof of the concept. This test-bed enables the study of delay and security overhead in a real system. Eventually, the presented solutions are recaptured in order to see their advantages/ disadvantages. In addition, we introduce other perspectives in terms of HSs and network interconnection.

New networking paradigms for future wireless networks

Shams Shafigh, A. (Alireza) 29 March 2018 (has links)
Abstract With the current technological advancements, stage is being set for new ultra-responsive and robust 5G-enabled applications (e.g., virtual reality, Tactile Internet,…) to deliver critical real-time traffic. The emergence of such critical applications requires new networking models that can handle more connected devices with super high reliability and low latency communications. In the view of these research challenges, this thesis aims to propose new techno-economic models and networking paradigms needed in the redesign of wireless network architectures and protocols to support the connectivity requirements by which operators and users effectively benefit from new opportunities introduced by 5G-enabled applications. In this thesis, new paradigms in wireless network access are presented and analyzed. First, dynamic network architecture (DNA) is introduced, where certain classes of wireless terminals can be turned temporarily into an access point (AP) anytime while connected to the Internet. In this concept, a framework is proposed to optimize different aspects of this architecture. Furthermore, to dynamically reconfigure an optimum topology and adjust it to the traffic variations, a new specific encoding of genetic algorithm (GA) is presented. Then, a distributed user-centric spectrum sharing is developed based on DNA networks to enable user-provided access points pervasively share the unused resources. Next, a flexible cloud-based radio access network (FRAN) is proposed to offload traffic to DNA networks in order to provide low latency communications. In the sequel of the thesis, as a new paradigm, a context-aware resource allocation scheme based on adaptive spatial beamforming and reinforcement learning is proposed. In addition, semi-cognitive radio network (SCRN) as a new spectrum sharing model is developed to improve the utility of primary and secondary owners. Seuraavaksi työssä ehdotetaan joustavaa pilvipalvelu-pohjaista liityntäverkkoa (flexible cloud-based radio access network, FRAN) käyttäjädatan purkamiseksi DNA-verkoille matalalatenssisen tietoliikenteen tarjoamiseksi. Edellä mainittujen menetelmien seurauksena ehdotetaan uutta paradigmaa: Kontekstiriippuvaista resurssien allokointia perustuen adaptiiviseen spatiaaliseen keilanmuodostukseen ja vahvistusoppimiseen. Näiden lisäksi kehitetään uusi spektrinjakomalli puolikognitiivisille radioverkoille (semi-cognitive radio network, SCRN) ensisijaisien ja toissijaisien käyttäjien utiliteetin parantamiseksi.
