A Comparative Case Study of Internationalization Networks in the Intensive English Programs of Michigan Public UniversitiesJanuary 2020 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore how internationalization is formed and operationalized in the Intensive English Programs (IEPs) at three Michigan higher education institutions. Drawing from Latour’s (2005) actor-network theory, this study examined the human and non-human actors involved in constructions of internationalization, which was defined as relational processes (programs and policies) that define and deliver international, intercultural, or global elements into the purpose, function and delivery of postsecondary education (Altbach, 2007; Knight, 2003). As an entry point into the study, I focused on the director of the programs and their mission statements, a written articulation of beliefs, as suggested by Childress (2007; 2009).
To explore these potential networks, I utilized Comparative Case Study (Bartlett and Vavrus, 2016), which allowed for more unbounded cases; Actor-Network Theory (Latour, 1999; Latour, 2005) which allowed for agency among non-human actors that also coexist, transform, translate or modify meaning; and relational network analysis methods (Herz et al. 2014; Heath et al. 2009; Clarke 2005), which helped to explore and make sense of complex relational data. This was in the effort to construct an understanding of the “processual, built activities, performed by the actants out of which they are composed” (Crawford, 2004, p. 1). I mapped actors within each site who were performing their local and contingent processes of internationalization.
The results indicate the formation of complex and far reaching webs of actors and activities that accomplish a form of internationalization that is highly localized. While each program under investigation responded to similar pressures, such as funding shortfalls via student enrollment declines, the responses and networks that were created from these constraints were wildly different. Indeed, the study found these programs engaged in international activities that enrolled various external actors, from campus departments to local community groups. In engaging in relational connections that moved beyond their primary instructional purpose, English language instruction and cultural acclimatization, the IEPs in this study were able to 1) contribute to the internationalization of university departmental curricula, 2) serve their communities in dynamic and impactful ways and 3) develop their own sense of internationalization in a university setting. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Learning, Literacies and Technologies 2020

Algorithms and Benchmarking for Virtual Network MappingKandoor, Arun Kumar 01 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Network virtualization has become a primary enabler to solve the internet ossi- fication problem. It allows to run multiple architectures or protocols on a shared physical infrastructure. One of the important aspects of network virtualization is to have a virtual network (VN) mapping technique which uses the substrate resources efficiently. Currently, there exists very few VN mapping techniques and there is no common evaluation strategy which can test these algorithms effectively. In this thesis, we advocate the need for such a tool and develop it by considering a wide spectrum of parameters and simulation scenarios. We also provide various performance metrics and do a comparison study of the existing algorithms. Based on the comparative study, we point out the positives and negatives of the existing mapping algorithms and propose a new LP formulation based on Hub location approach that efficiently allocates substrate resources to the virtual network requests. Our results show that our algorithm does better in terms of number of successful network mappings and average time to map while balancing load on the network.

The entrepreneurial playwright : a relational approach to marketing plays in the regionsAinsworth, Rodney Phillip January 2008 (has links)
This exegesis examines the proposition that playwriting is an entrepreneurial activity when combined with the role of producer. The thesis demonstrates that, when a playwright combines the two roles and considers the development of a network of relationships in the process, positive steps can be made towards the marketing of a work and the career progression of the playwright. The issues of marketing and career progression are considered in a regional context.
The thesis comprises the creation of a full-length theatrical work through the MA (Research) Program at Queensland University of Technology and an analysis of that journey in the context of regional theatre practice in Queensland. Nicolas Bourriaud’s theory of the Relational Aesthetic is used as a way of charting my practice and of examining how this approach might be appropriate to theatre-making in regional Australia. The paper establishes strategies by which the playwright, when also undertaking the role of producer, might manage the complex set of circumstances and interactions between the work, the community and the industry.
Using practice-led research methodologies, the exegesis examines the process of the creation of a new play, Sinking, and explores, through the use of an autobiographical case study, what the process has meant to the author’s development as a playwright over a fifteen month period. The paper uses a network map to explore the interactions created through a rehearsed reading of the first draft of the play in October 2006 and, in doing so, demonstrates how a close engagement with the community formed the basis of the entrepreneurial strategy.
The exegesis demonstrates that Bourriaud’s work connects very closely with the author’s practice and examines how the approach might be useful for other regional arts practitioners, particularly those in the early stages of their careers. The research aims to identify how the creation of the play, and the subsequent interactions generated within a regional community, can lead to opportunities to create connections both within the author’s place of residence and in broader theatre industry contexts, nationally and internationally, in order to provide commercial and professional outcomes.

Previous issue date: 2015-08-28 / FACEPE / The wireless technologies are progressing at a rapid pace such that the future of digital communication will be dominated by a dense, ubiquitous and heterogeneous wireless network. Along with this, there is a growing demand for wireless services with different requirements. In this respect, the management of this complex wireless ecosystem becomes challenging, and the wireless virtualization is pointed as an efficient solution to perform it, where different virtual wireless networks can be created, sharing and running on the same wireless infrastructure, and providing differentiated services to users. However, to satisfy the high demand for mobile communications, it is necessary the availability of a natural and scarce resource, the electromagnetic spectrum. Although the insertion of virtualization in wireless networks provides better resources utilization, the current approaches to employ the wireless virtualization can cause resource underutilization. To overcome this underutilization and enable that new wireless virtual networks can be deployed, the wireless virtualization can be combined with the cognitive radio technology and dynamic spectrum access (DSA) techniques in order to achieve the deepest level of wireless virtualization and to improve the resource utilization through the deployment of opportunistic resource sharing. Thus, virtual wireless networks with different access priorities to the resources (e.g. primary and secondary) can be deployed in an overlay form, sharing the same substrate wireless network, where the secondary virtual network (SVN) accesses the resources only when the primary one (PVN) is not using them. However, this new scenario brings new challenges: from the mapping to operation of these networks. The SVN mapping is a NP-hard problem and presents some constraints and objectives related to both PVNs and SVNs. Achieving all objectives simultaneously is a challenging process. This thesis addresses the SVNs mapping problem onto substrate network considering the existence of the PVNs on the same substrate network. It discloses the environment composed by these networks, denoted as cognitive radio virtual network environment (CRVNE), models this environment by using a M/M/N/N queue with preemptive and priority service, and delineates a multi-objective problem formulation for the SVNs mapping. Moreover, a scheme based on Genetic Algorithms to solve the SVNs mapping problem is proposed and evaluated in terms of collision, secondary user (SU) dropping, and SU blocking probabilities, and joint utilization, achieving better results than other based on the First-Fit strategy. / Recentemente, as tecnologias sem fio estão progredindo rapidamente de modo que o futuro da comunicação digital será dominado por uma rede sem fio densa, ubíqua e heterogênea. Adicionado a isso, existe uma demanda crescente por serviços sem fio com diferentes requisitos. Neste aspecto, o gerenciamento deste ecossistema complexo se tona desafiador e a virtualização sem fio é apontada como uma solução eficiente para realizá-lo, onde redes virtuais sem fio diferentes podem ser criadas, compartilhando e executando sobre a mesma infraestrutura de rede sem fio e provendo serviços diferenciados aos usuários. Entretanto, para satisfazer à alta demanda por comunicação móvel é necessária a disponibilidade de um recurso natural e escasso, o espectro eletromagnético. Embora a inserção de virtualização em redes sem fio forneça maior utilização dos recursos, as abordagens atuais para empregar a virtualização sem fio podem causar subutilização de recursos. Para superar esta subutilização, a virtualização sem fio pode ser combinada com a tecnologia de rádio cognitivo e técnicas de acesso dinâmico ao espectro (DSA) para alcançar o mais profundo nível de virtualização sem fio e melhorar a utilização de recursos através do compartilhamento oportunista deles. Assim, redes virtuais sem fio com diferentes prioridades de acesso aos recursos (ex. primária e secundária) podem ser implantadas sobrepostas, compartilhando a mesma infraestrutura de rede sem fio, onde as redes virtuais secundárias (SVNs) acessam os recursos somente quando as redes virtuais primárias (PVNs) não os estiverem utilizando. Entretanto, este novo cenário traz novos desafios, desde o mapeamento até a operação destas redes. O mapeamento de SVNs é um problema NP-difícil e apresenta restrições e objetivos relacionados tanto às PVNs quanto às SVNs. Alcançar todos os objetivos simultaneamente é um processo desafiador. Esta tese aborda o problema de mapeamento de SVNs em redes de substrato considerando a existência de PVNs na mesma rede de substrato. Ela apresenta o ambiente de redes virtuais de rádio cognitivo (CRVNE), modela este ambiente utilizando uma fila M/M/N/N preemptiva e com prioridade e delineia uma formulação multiobjetivo para o mapeamento de SVNs. Além disso, um esquema baseado em Algoritmos Genéticos (GA) para resolver o problema de mapeamento de SVNs é proposto e avaliado em termos das probabilidades de colisão, descarte de usuário secundário (US), bloqueio de US e utilização conjunta, alcançando melhores resultados do que um esquema baseado na estratégia First-Fit.

conhecimento, observadas na Uneb, no âmbito do Sistema Universidade Aberta do
Brasil (UAB). Realizou-se um estudo dos processos de gestão do conhecimento, que foram desenvolvidos em rede e praticados de forma colaborativa pelas universidades que fazem parte da UAB. Constatou-se que estes processos foram criados desde a concepção do projeto da UAB e implementados no período de
consolidação da modalidade de educação a distância nas universidades públicas
brasileiras, que teve início no ano de 2006 com sua a criação. Foram utilizadas
técnicas de mapeamento cognitivo para desenvolver as análises, buscando-se a
utilização desta experiência e a sua sistematização, para delinear o processo que
recebeu o nome de Gestão Colaborativa do Conhecimento em Rede (GCCR), concebido no desenvolvimento desta pesquisa e que utiliza as tecnologias da informação na gestão do conhecimento na universidade. Após o Mapeamento dos processos, realizados a partir da Universidade do Estado da Bahia, considerando a sua participação na UAB e a sua interação com as demais instituições que o integram, foram realizadas reflexões com a utilização de modelos de análises,
desenvolvidos para este fim, através das quais foram considerados os aspectos
legais e as diretrizes criadas pelo Sistema UAB, desde a sua concepção e que motivaram a sua morfologia de rede colaborativa. Foram analisadas, ainda, as práticas interativas nos processos de gestão do conhecimento, os quais foram desenhados em forma de mapas, a partir dos referenciais teóricos assumidos neste estudo. Os referenciais para o estudo das competências e do exercício prático da
competência colaboração pelos coordenadores UAB, representantes das instituições
de ensino superior integrantes do Sistema, no seu dia a dia, foram o resultado do
estágio de doutorado sanduíche, realizado na Open University, no Reino Unido em
2013, de onde vieram também as discussões sobre Recursos Educacionais Abertos
(REA) e o aprofundamento das técnicas da cartografia cognitiva, amplamente
empregada. Os procedimentos de gestão decorrentes deste processo foram
registrados e analisados para dar-lhes maior visibilidade, buscando maior consistência à sua compreensão como processo gerencial e visando a possibilitar o seu uso em prol da qualidade da gestão do conhecimento na educação superior a distância. Os resultados deixam evidente a existência de um processo inovador de gestão do conhecimento na universidade, que tem como base principal o exercício da competência colaboração e se concretiza através de uma rede de interações
entre os componentes do sistema, utilizando-se comunidades virtuais na Internet, criadas para este fim e outras estruturas de encontros presenciais, sistematicamente realizados. / ABSTRACT This research focuses on the mapping of innovative practices of knowledge
management, observed in UNEB under the Open University System of Brazil (UAB).
It was conducted a study of knowledge management processes that have been
developed and practiced collaboratively on network by universities that are part of
UAB. It was found that these processes have been created since the conception of
the UAB project and implemented in the period of consolidation of distance learning
in Brazilian public universities, which began in 2006 with UAB‟s creation. The
cognitive mapping techniques were used to develop the analysis, seeking to use this
experience and their systematization, to outline the process that was named
Collaborative Knowledge Management Network (CKMN), designed in the development of this research and uses information technology in knowledge management at the university. After mapping the processes performed from the University of the State of Bahia, considering its participation in the UAB and its interaction with other institutions that integrate, reflections were performed with the use of analyzes models, developed for this purpose, through the which were
considered the legal aspects and guidelines created by the UAB System, from conception and giving rise to the morphology of collaborative network. Were also analyzed, interactive practices in knowledge management processes, which were designed in the form of maps, from the theoretical references made in this study. The
reference for the study of the skills and practical exercise of jurisdiction by UAB
collaboration coordinators, representatives of higher education institutions members
of the System, in their day to day, were the result of sandwich doctoral stage, held at
the Open University in the United Kingdom in 2013, from which also came the discussions on Open Educational Resources (OER) and the further development of techniques of cognitive mapping, widely used. Management procedures of this process were recorded and analyzed to give them greater visibility, seeking greater consistency to its understanding as a management process and in order to allow its use for the quality of knowledge management in distance higher education. The results show clearly the existence of an innovative process of knowledge management in the university, which is mainly based on the exercise of the
competence of collaboration realized by a network of interactions between system
components, using virtual communities on the Internet, created for this purpose and
other face meetings structures, systematically performed.

Notre travail de recherche explore de manière comparée le développement du neuromarketing aux Etats-Unis et en France. Nous commençons par analyser la littérature sur le neuromarketing. Nous utilisons comme cadre théorique et méthodologique l’Actor Network Theory (ANT) ou Théorie de l’Acteur-Réseau (dans le sillage des travaux de Bruno Latour et Michel Callon). Nous montrons ainsi comment des actants « humains et non-humains »: acteurs-réseaux, traces (publications) et controverses forment les piliers d’une nouvelle discipline telle que le neuromarketing. Notre approche hybride « qualitative-quantitative », nous permet de construire une méthodologie appliquée de l’ANT: analyse bibliométrique (Publish Or Perish), text mining, clustering et analyse sémantique de la littérature scientifique et web du neuromarketing. A partir de ces résultats, nous construisons des cartographies, sous forme de graphes en réseau (Gephi) qui révèlent les interrelations et les associations entre acteurs, traces et controverses autour du neuromarketing. / Our research explores the comparative development of neuromarketing between the United States and France. We start by analyzing the literature on neuromarketing. We use as theoretical and methodological framework the Actor Network Theory (ANT) (in the wake of the work of Bruno Latour and Michel Callon). We show how “human and non-human” entities (“actants”): actor-network, traces (publications) and controversies form the pillars of a new discipline such as the neuromarketing. Our hybrid approach “qualitative-quantitative” allows us to build an applied methodology of the ANT: bibliometric analysis (Publish Or Perish), text mining, clustering and semantic analysis of the scientific literature and web of the neuromarketing. From these results, we build data visualizations, mapping of network graphs (Gephi) that reveal the interrelations and associations between actors, traces and controversies about neuromarketing.
