Organizations, specifically startups, are situated in markets where the need to look into solving complex problems and the search for innovation are increasingly growing. In this context we highlight the strategic design as an approach that allows space expansion of the problem to be solved in the same way that increases the possibilities for innovation and brings project dimension of constant experimentation. This research aims to provide clues to analyse the contribution of the strategic design approach in the search for innovation, along with the use of the Business Model Canvas tool (BMC), within the reality of startups. The business environment of these companies was chosen considering organizations that drive innovation, embryonic and that have not yet reached the maturity of financial resources but with great economic importance in the job creation and technological innovation scene. Whereas Canvas, which aims to turn organizations more innovative and find new business formats allowing anyone to create or modify their business model was chosen because it is a user-friendly management tool and recognised in the current market organizations. Based on that, the research has a theoretical framework that supports the study, the environmental understanding to be searched and the implementation of the strategic design, through research-action, conducted at BoardShore startup, an e-commerce company that sells equipment for water sports, in Porto Alegre. Thus, we sought to examine the possibility of a deeper reflection about the possible contribution of strategic design, in conjunction with the implementation of the BMC as this tool aims to develop new business models. The results of this study show the importance of applying and adapting the design and management tools to a particular environment of the organization and the relevance of the strategic designer role in this design process.

Private equity and venture capital instruments, a study into their use and intention.Thomson, Dean, Banking & Finance, Australian School of Business, UNSW January 2005 (has links)
Moral Hazard and the Agency Costs thereof have long been accepted arguments in venture finance theory and have therefore long been accepted shortcomings in the venture capitalist / entrepreneur relationship. In psychological experiments ??? including economic ??? it has been shown that human beings prefer to act in a reciprocal manner that reduces any inequity in a relationship. Humans who expect to receive an unfair and inequitable position in a relationship, will take steps to rectify that position. Specifically, if a venture capitalist expects the entrepreneur to unfairly extract private benefits from the investee company post investment by the venture capitalist, then he or she will impose costly controls and monitoring mechanisms in place to prevent that. All relationships that impose controls and monitoring mechanisms are inefficient, as opposed to Advising the investee which draws upon the skills of the venture capitalist and is generally efficient. The venture capital industry is comprised of intelligent and professional people who can recognise inefficiency easily. Indeed, this is how they make poorly managed companies into profitable trade sales or IPO???s. The online survey completed for this thesis poses questions that attempt to show that venture capitalists and entrepreneurs are not locked in an antagonistic relationship where each merely acts in a self interested way. This thesis concludes that venture capitalists and entrepreneurs do work in a reciprocal relationship recognising the substantial efficiency gains to be made by doing so.

The impact of privatisation on SMME's and the communities of Mafikeng areas in the North-West / Charles Mpopodi RasealaRaseala, Charles Mpopodi January 2006 (has links)
The restructuring of state assets was expected to contribute towards black
economic empowerment and a broader redistribution of wealth to those who were
previously excluded from participating actively in the economy of this country.
However, there have been several accusations leveled at government. Some
people believe that privatization of state assets has benefited a few. This has led to
the enactment of the Broad based black economic empowerment act. There is also
a concern from the communities and unions that privatization of state assets will
result in poor service delivery and unemployment.
The study was conducted through a quantitative methodology. The final
questionnaire was administered to 40 taxi owners, 20 government employees, 20
contractors, 20 business owners and 40 local residents. Out of the 140 people, II 0
responded, thus a 79 % response rate, all was used for data analyses. The various
variables (responses to individual questions) in the questionnaire were arranged to
obtain a rating for each dimension covered. This procedure assumes equality of
interval of the Likert scale and therefore the data is regarded as the least interval
data (rather than ordinary data).
The findings on the study showed that majority of the respondents were not in
favour of privatisation. Recommendations made were as follows, the government
through its education programmes in schools and in Adult Basic Education and
Training (ABET) canters must educate citizens about socio-economic and political
issues as well as familiarizing them with the government's macro - economic
policy, in particular the GEAR policy. The government should only make partial
privatization, and not complete/ whole privatization. / (MBA) North-West University, Mafikeng Campus, 2006

Determinants of new technology-based firms performance in catch-up regions: evidence from the U.S. biopharmaceutical and IT service industries 1996-2005Xiao, Wenbin 01 April 2008 (has links)
This study investigates the impacts of regional characteristics on the early-stage performance of New Technology-Based Firms (NTBFs) in catch-up regions where a mature industrial cluster has yet to be formed. It hypothesized that the average NTBF performance in a region is a function of its scientist job market conditions, cultural diversity, venture capital, academic research, industrial structure, and local entrepreneurial climate. Using the events of Initial Public Offerings (IPO) and Merger & Acquisitions (M&A) as an indicator of early-stage success of NTBFs, this study constructs a set of Zero-Inflated-Negative-Binomial (ZINB) models to predict the spatial distribution of such events in the U.S. biopharmaceutical and Information Technology (IT) service industries during the period from 1996 to 2005.
Several empirical findings emerge from this study. First, the local entrepreneurial climate plays a significant and positive role on NTBF performance in both industries. Second, the positive impact of cultural diversity is more significant in the IT service industry than in the biopharmaceutical industry. Third, the scientist job market size and absolute salary level have positive impacts on NTBF performance, but the effect of relative salary level is negative. Fourth, proximity to venture capital firms has positive but non-linear effects, but the adverse effect of excess venture capital is stronger in the IT service industry. Fifth, there is little evidence of the direct effects of academic research in determining the NTBF performance in both industries. Finally, industrial specialization is significant and positive only in the IT service industry. The results suggest that promoting local entrepreneurial climate and cultural diversity are two effective policy instruments for catch-up regions to foster their NTBF growth.
