The development of an artificial hand using nickel-titanium as actuators

Longela, Makusudi Simon January 2013 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Mechanical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2013. / This thesis outlines a proposed mechanical design, prototyping and testing of a five fingered artificial hand made of 15 articulated joints actuated by Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) mimicking muscular functions. SMAs Artificial muscles were incorporated in the forearm and artificial tendons made of nylon wires passing through a hollow palm transmit the pulling force to bend the fingers. Torsion springs set in each joint of the fingers create enough restoring force to straighten the finger when the actuators are disengaged. Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) wires were intrinsically embedded within the hand structure allowing significant movements mimicking human hand-like gestures. A control box made of switches connected to the artificial hand helps to control each gesture. A modular approach was taken in the design to facilitate the manufacture and assembly processes. Nickel-Titanium wires were used as actuators to perform the artificial muscle functions by changing their crystallographic structures due to Joule's heating. Rapid prototyping techniques were employed to manufacture the hand in ABS plastic.

Influência da conicidade no comportamento mecânico de instrumentos de níquel-titânio / Influence of the tapering in the mechanical behavior of instruments of nickel-titanium

Marco Aurélio Rodrigues do Prado 19 February 2008 (has links)
This work has as purpose to evaluate the influence of motor driven nickel-titanium instruments tapering, in the flexibility, resistance to fracture by twisting to the right by rotating flexure, analyzing also by means of scanning electronic microscopy the instruments fracture surface arising by twisting and rotating flexure, as well as the configuration of helices of helical cutting rods of instruments near the fracture point. Sixty instrument made of nickel- -titanium and motor-driven of K3 brand were used (Sybron Dental Specialties-Kerr, Mexico), nominal value of 25mm long, and 0,25mm diameter in Do, in tapering of 0,02 0,04 and 0,06mm/mm. Ten endodontic instruments of each tapering were evaluated by means of the non destructive test of flexure in cantilever and ten endodontic instruments of each tapering were evaluated by means of destructive tests twisting to the right and rotating flexure. After the performance of statistic test,: variance analysis at significance level of 5%, and multiple comparison test from Student-Newman-Keuls to 5%, Taking into consideration the implemented methodology, the applied statistical techniques (e.g. variance analysis at significance level of .05 and multiple comparison test from Student-Newman-Keuls at significance level of .05), and the obtained results, it was demonstrated that the flexibility of the instruments tested decreases as the tapering of the helices of helical cutting rods increases. The maximum twisting angle of the instruments tested by twisting decreases as the tapering of the helices of helical cutting rods increases. The maximum torque up to the fracture of the tested instruments increased as the tapering of the helices of helical cutting rods increased. The number of cycles for the fracture in rotating flexure decreases as the tapering increase and the increase of the resistance in flexure (flexibility decrease) of the tested endodontic instruments increased. The analysis by scanning electronic microscopy revealed that, independently of the tapering and the rotating type (twisting or rotating flexure) applied to the endodontic instrument, the fractured samples presented fractured surface of ductile characteristics. A reversion of the helical cutting rods course was observed on the twisting test near the immobilization point. A reversion of the helical cutting rods course (visible plastic deformation) on the rotating flexure test of the fractured instruments was not observed.

Avaliação da eficiência de sistemas rotatórios na desobturação de canais, através da microtomografia de Raios-X / Evaluation of the efficiency of rotary systems on remove filling materials through X-Ray microtomography

Gustavo Alberto Rubino 18 September 2012 (has links)
The objective of this study was to evaluate, ex vivo, the efficiency of rotary ProTaper Universal Retreatment Files and Mani Retreatment Files in removal procedure of the mesial roots of mandibular molars, obturated by the technique of continuous wave of condensation, determining the volume percentage of material remaining filling in root canals, using the X-Ray micro-CT. A total of 18 mandibular molars with two root canals which had mesial curvature between 25° and 35° and the radius of curvature smaller than 10mm, were prepared by the instrument Mtwo size/taper 35/.04. They were then filled with gutta-percha and sealer Ah-Plus by the technique of continuous wave of condensation and maintained at 37°C for seven days. Micro-CT images of the teeth was carried out using the device SkyScan 1172 on 100kV and 100A as parameters, generating images size 11.88 micrometers. Then the teeth were randomly divided into two groups according to the type of instrument retreatment evaluated ProTaper Universal Retreatment Files (PR) and Mani Retreatment Files (MR). Initially, the procedure for remove the root canal obturation was performed with Largo burs associated with a drop of solvent so that the instrument of each system could be used until the complete removal procedure was reached. After re-scanning, the images were reconstructed with the software used NRecon and analyzed by CTAn software, allowing to obtain quantitative data of the samples. We used the Student t test to determine the occurrence of significant differences between experimental groups (p <0.05). The mean initial and final volumes (mm3) of the remaining filling material were 17.72 and 2.12 for the P group and 16.61 to 3.71 for group MR, respectively. The PR group had the lowest average volume percentage of remaining filling material (12.76 ± 6.93%) when compared to MR (23.54 ± 10.60%), with a statistically significant difference. Neither of the systems tested were able to completely remove the filling material inside the root canals. The rotary system ProTaper Universal Retreatment Files was more efficient than the system Mani Retreatment Files in removal procedure of mesial canals, filled with the technique of continuous wave of condensation. The characteristics of rotary retreatment system may interfere with the volume percentage of remaining filling material and consequently the efficiency of removal procedure.

Abstract: Rotary endodontic instruments of Ni-Ti (rotary files) are used in order to prepare endodontic dental conducts and show memory shape, high flexibility, and different designs. Although these characteristics, when used in endodontics clinic, sometimes occur fracture inside the conduct of the tooth and, as a result of that, low life, high cost, and iatrogen. The propose of this study is to realize a failure analysis of two different endodontic files, ProTaper® and ProFile®, of Ni-Ti, from the same maker and different shapes, by using some files with failure in service, and fatigue test in files, without use, in rotating bend, to obtain references in terms of micromechanisms of fracture. Were realized chemical analysis, by spectrometry of X-Ray fluorescence and X-Ray diffration, metallograthy, by optical microscopy, and fratographic, by scanning electron microscopy, and microhardness and fatigue tests, in the two types of files, ProTaper and ProFile. The results show the chemical composition of the two files are the same, with 58% of nickel and 42% of titanium, in weight, and was possible to identify, by metallography, two phases, Ti2Ni (secondary phase) and TiNi (matrix). The median levels of microhardness were 344HV1, for the ProTaper® file, and 330HV1, for the ProFile® file. It was possible to identify, by scanning electron microscopy, two different regions on the fracture surface of the files, for fracture from service and from the fatigue tests, one correspondent to the fatigue zone, and another, the final fracture, show dimples. It was possible to conclude that the failure of the analyzed files was by fatigue. / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Avaliação das forças, momentos e binding, produzidos por deformação de primeira ordem do fio NiTi .014 superelástico, em braquetes autoligáveis passivos estudo in vitro / Evaluation of force, moment and binding produced by first order deformation on a superelastic .014 Niti wire using passive self-ligated brackets in vitro study

Gilberto Vilanova Queiroz 09 April 2010 (has links)
Bracket characteristics and wire stiffness dictate the mechanical effects that nickel titanium wire deformation will cause upon teeth. The main variables associated to bracket characteristics include bracket length (that influence interbracket distance), and coefficient of friction. The purpose of this research was to compare how self ligated brackets such as Damon, Easy Clip and Smart Clip influence moments, forces, and binding produced by the deformation of a .014 Niti Contour wire. Methods: a clinical simulation device with three .022x.028 stainless steel brackets representing canine and bicuspids was attached to an Instron universal traction machine in order to register the forces, and to a Lutron dynamometer to register the moments produced on the anchor unit. The displacement of the first bicuspid fixed on the Instron machine produced a first order deformation on the superelastic .014 Niti Contour wire. A load cell of 500 Newtons under a speed of 0,05mm/second was used during the deformation. Forces and moments were registered up to 4,5mm maximum displacement and during the return to zero. For each bracket model ten repetitions were performed. Binding registration was obtained on a separate test, by continuous traction of the Contour Niti wire during first order deformation up to 4,8mm and back to zero. The mechanical effects were compared with a 4mm deformation. Results: on the moving unit, the activation forces presented significant differences (Damon 224, Easy Clip 241 and Smart Clip 299cN), while the deactivation forces were smaller on Damon (62cN) and similar on the Easy Clip (71cN) and Smart Clip (76 cN). The activation moments on the anchor unit presented significant differences (Damon 314, Easy Clip 356 and Smart Clip 438 cN/mm), while the deactivation moments were similar in the Damon (239 cN/mm) and Easy Clip (242 cN/mm) brackets, and significantly larger on Smart Clip (317cN/mm). Activation and deactivation binding values were similar. The hysteresis percentage on forces was 70% and on moments 28%. Conclusions: 1) the forces produced by the .014 Contour Niti at the movement unit are similar among the Damon, Easy Clip and Smart Clip brackets; 2) the moments produced by the .014 Contour Niti at the anchor unit are similar between Damon and Easy Clip brackets, while the Smart Clip produces larger moments; 3) the method of measuring friction forces by continuous traction of the orthodontic wire is not adequate to measure the binding associated with deactivation forces; 4) hysteresis observed at the beginning of deactivation is influenced by binding.

Objective: The objective of this research was to compare the displacement resistance of overlapped heat-activated superelastic nickel titanium wires, in passive self-ligating metallic brackets. Material and Methods: Three thicknesses of heat-activated superelastic nickel titanium wires (NiTi-TA) were used: 0.014 overlapped with 0.016 and 0.020 (FlexyNiTi Thermal - Orthometric, Marília, SP, BR), associated with two types of passive self-ligating metallic brackets: SmartClip SL3® (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, EUA) and OrthoClip SLB® (Orthometric, Marília, SP, BR). A device with 5 brackets of each type (from right central incisor to the second maxillary premolar) was developed for this research. The canine bracket was attached to a sliding stainless steel bar which allowed the alteration of its vertical position, while the remaining brackets were attached to a fixed acrylic bar. The forces generated by means of the canine bracket vertical displacement from 0mm to 1.5mm; 3.0mm; 4.5mm and 6.0mm were recorded. The test environment was dry with a controlled temperature of 36.5º C ± 1º C. A total of 160 tests were carried out in the Instron Testing Machine. The Shapiro-Wilk test, non-paired Student t-test and ANOVA with Tukey post hoc test were applied to the data (p<0.05). Results: The normal distribution was confirmed, and the parametric tests showed that there were statistically significant differences in the SmartClip SL3® when associated with the NiTi-TA 0.020 and 0.014 wires overlapped to the 0.016 wire in the height of 1.5mm (p=0.003) and 6mm (p<0.0001). However, statistically significant differences were not found in the heights of 3mm (p=0.76) and 4.5mm (p=0.09). For the OrthoClip SLB® brackets, there were statistically significant differences between the NiTi-TA 0.020 and 0.014 wires overlapped with the 0.016 wire in all the heights assessed (p<0.0001). In the comparison between the brackets when associated with the NiTi-TA 0.020 wire, there were statistically significant differences in the heights of 1.5mm, 3mm and 6mm (p<0.0001). However, in the height of 4.5mm the differences were not statistically significant (p=0.32). When associated with the overlapped NiTi-TA 0.014 and 0.016 wires, the differences in all assessed heights were statistically significant (1.5mm - p=0.0006; other height - p0.0001). Conclusion: For the SmartClip SL3® brackets, with 1.5mm of displacement, the overlapped NiTi-TA 0.014 and 0.016 wires showed less displacement resistance, while in the height of 6mm the least displacement resistance was found with the NiTi-TA 0.020. In the remaining heights, there were no statistically significant differences between the wires. For the OrthoClip SLB® brackets, the overlapped NiTi-TA 0.014 and 0.016 wires showed the least displacement resistance in all the assessed heights. In the comparison between the two types of brackets, associated with the NiTi-TA 0.020 wire, for the height of 1.5mm, the OrthoClip SLB® bracket showed less displacement resistance, while for the heights of 3mm and 6mm the SmartClip SL3® brackets showed less displacement resistance. For the height of 4.5mm there were no statistically significant differences found between the assessed brackets.

Nitinol shape memory alloy in flexor tendon repair

Karjalainen, T. (Teemu) 27 November 2012 (has links)
Abstract Early motion is crucial for tendon healing and functional results after flexor tendon repair in the fingers. Motion, however, causes stress in the repair site, which can result in failure of the repair. A flexor tendon repair is made with fine calibre sutures, which sets exceptional requirements for the suture materials used in flexor tendon repair. Nitinol (nickel-titanium alloy) is a shape memory alloy, which can exist in two temperature-dependent forms, soft martensite and stiff austenite. It is possible to fabricate a nitinol wire that is soft and pliable, yet has high tensile strength. It also has excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, it is a potential candidate flexor tendon repair suture material. This study evaluates biomechanical aspects of martensite nitinol wire as a flexor tendon repair suture material. The study hypothesis was that nitinol wire improves the strength of the repairs compared with the repairs made with conventional suture materials. It was found that nitinol core repairs and circumferential repairs performed significantly better when compared with repairs made with commonly used braided polyester and polypropylene of equal calibre. To further optimise the performance of the nitinol wire in tendon surgery, two experimental models were developed to study the suture-tendon interface. The aim was to prevent pull-out of the suture loop so that surgeons could have full advantage of the tensile strength of the nitinol suture. First, it was tested whether it is possible to improve the suture’s ability to grip the tendon tissue by changing the suture type from monofilament to multifilament. Multifilament suture loops reached higher pull-out strength when compared with round monofilament loops when a locking loop was used. Subsequently, the grip of four different previously reported core repair loops was tested. Based on their failure mechanism, two novel loops were developed. The novel loops demonstrated superior ability to grip the tendon. The novel loops can be useful with high tensile strength suture materials and in repairs, which are prone to suture pull-out. / Tiivistelmä Varhainen korjauksen jälkeinen aktiivinen kuntoutus on osoittautunut hyödylliseksi jänteen paranemiselle. Tämä asettaa erityisiä vaatimuksia jännekorjauksessa käytettävälle ommelainemateriaalille. Nikkeli-titaani (nitinoli) on nk. muistimetalli.

Avaliação in vitro da capacidade de corte e deformação de limas rotatórias de níquel-titânio / In vitro evaluation of the capability of cut and deformation of rotary nickeltitanium files

Paulo Roberto Baptista Reis 05 August 2009 (has links)
Aim: The search to improve root canal preparation makes new instruments are designed. However, several factors such as cutting angle, cross section, forming the tip and taper influence the fracture of these instruments. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to evaluate in vitro the ability to cut and deformation of rotating file F2 ProTaper Universal system and file system EndoSequence of 25/06, both nickel-titanium based on the number of uses. Methods: For this study we used a non-random convenience sample of ten files rotary F2 ProTaper Universal System and ten rotary files number 25/06 of System EndoSequence. Results: In the descriptive statistical analysis of the sum of the loss of files ProTaper Universal, the coefficient of variation was 8,7%, and the EndoSequence was 9,12%. When compared to the cutting efficiency of summation of damage there was no statistically significant difference between the files ProTaper Universal and EndoSequence. The F2 ProTaper Universal files examined showed progressive loss of cut from the first use with statistically significant until the fifth use, while the 25/06 EndoSequence files also demonstrated significant progressive loss of cutting from the first to the fifth use except the forth use, where there was no loss of significant cuts in relation to the third use. It is believed that based on the last sentence, when were compared the loss of cutting of different uses between both groups, there was only one statistically significant difference in the comparison between the forth uses, where the used EndoSequence files shows better performance than the ProTaper Universal files, and the rest of the comparison was not statistically significant between the files studied. As the deformation of the files examined it was found that there was no statistically significant when seen in the scanning electron microscope. Conclusions: Using the methodology used and based on the results obtained it was concluded that the ProTaper files and EndoSequence showed similar ability to cut, in relation to deformation of files, found that between these two marks used no difference statistically significant.

In vitro comparison of force decay between three orthodontic sliding retraction methods

Steiger, Pamela 01 January 2014 (has links)
Objective: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine if there is a difference in force decay between three sliding retraction methods under a standardized force delivery system (200 gm at 25 mm stretch) at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Background: In order to achieve proper esthetics, occlusion and stability, orthodontic treatment may require extractions. Elastomeric chains, Nickel Titanium (NiTi) coils, and active ligatures are commonly used to close these extraction spaces. Methods: Twenty samples of each retraction method (elastomeric chains, NiTi Coils and active ligatures) were evaluated under standardized conditions (200 gm at 25 mm). The force of each retraction method was measured at 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks on a customized force gauge test stand (Shimpo FGV-1XY force gauge; Shimpo Instruments, Itasca, IL). Ten control samples were evaluated at 0 weeks and left un-stretched until the final measurement at 8 weeks. All samples were stored in a bath of Fusayama/Meyer artificial saliva (Pickering Laboratories, Mountain View, California) at 37°C in order to simulate the oral cavity. Results: At 2 weeks, the NiTi coils maintained their force while both the elastomeric chains and active ligatures experienced a statistically significant decrease in force over time. At 4, 6, and 8 weeks, the force of the elastomeric chains and active ligatures continued to decay and demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in force as compared to the NiTi coils and each other. At 8 weeks, the NiTi coils, elastomeric chains and active ligatures maintained 94.0%, 66.8% and 50.9%, respectively. This signifies a hierarchy of force decay with NiTi coils maintaining the largest amount of force, followed by the elastomeric chains and then the active ligatures. Conclusion: There is a significant difference in the amount of force decay of the three retraction methods over time under a standard initial force delivery of 200 gm over a 25 mm stretch. NiTi coils provide the light and constant force desired for efficient and biologically compatible tooth movement. The elastomeric chains maintained a larger amount of force than expected and have proven to achieve comparable tooth movement to NiTi coils in clinical studies. Active ligatures do not appear to be an effective means of force delivery. A force gauge is recommended to evaluate all forces placed clinically.
