Two Laureates and a Whore Debate Decorum and Delight: Dryden, Shadwell, and Behn in a Decade of Comedy A-la-ModeChapman, Patricia Ann 04 December 2006 (has links)
The comedies of John Dryden, Thomas Shadwell, and Aphra Behn were equally well-received by Restoration audiences, yet each dramatist professes divergent dramatic theories and poetic goals. In prefatory material to their plays, Shadwell insists a dramatist’s duty is to depict virtue rewarded and vice punished, Behn rejects the idea that comic drama might influence morals or manners, and Dryden maintains that his only goal is to please the audience, despite his dull conversation and lack of wit. A comparison between the playwrights’ dramatic theory and their most popular comedies of the 1668-77 decade indicates that none of them represent with any accuracy their own (or others’) work. Shadwell abandons his didactic goals in pursuit of approbation and income, while Behn unswervingly attacks social issues prevalent in a patriarchal society. Dryden’s comedies—witty and fast-paced despite his protestations—also address weaknesses in the patriarchal system and condemn the commodification of marriage.

Aerodynamic Modeling of Post-Stall and Spin Dynamics of Large Transport AirplanesMurch, Austin Matthew 08 1900 (has links)
This work addressed aerodynamic modeling methods for prediction of post-stall flight dynamics of large transport aircraft. This was accomplished by applying historically successful modeling methods used on high-performance military aircraft to a transport configuration. The overall research approach involved integrating forced oscillation and rotary balance wind tunnel data into an aerodynamic model using several methods of blending these data. The complete aerodynamic model was integrated into a six degree-of-freedom simulation. Experimental data from free-spin wind tunnel testing was used to validate the aerodynamic modeling methods by comparing aerodynamic force and moment coefficients and also to validate the simulation performance by comparing spin mode characteristics and time histories. The aerodynamic model prediction of spin dynamics was generally very good using all of the blending methods studied. In addition, key spin mode characteristics were predicted with a high degree of accuracy. Overall, using the Hybrid Kalviste method of blending forced oscillation and rotary balance data produced the closest match to the free-spin data when comparing aerodynamic coefficients and spin mode characteristics. Several issues were encountered with the blending methods that were exacerbated by nonlinearities and asymmetries in the dynamic aerodynamic data. A new method of looking up dynamic aerodynamic data was proposed to address shortcomings in the blending methods and recommendations were provided on addressing issues with the dynamic aerodynamic data.

Doubling transistor count for every two years in a computer chip, transmitter and receiver (T/R) module of a phased-array antenna that demands higher power with smaller dimensions are all results of miniaturization in electronics packaging. These technologies nowadays depend on improvement of reliable high performance heat sink to perform in narrower volumes. Employing microchannels or open cell metal foam heat sinks are two recently developing promising methods of cooling high heat fluxes. Although recent studies especially on microchannels can give a rough estimate on performances of these two methods, since using metal foams as heat sinks is still needed further studies, a direct experimental comparison of heat exchanger performances of these two techniques is still needed especially for thermal design engineers to decide the method of cooling.
For this study, microchannels with channel widths of 300 µ / m, 420 µ / m, 500 µ / m and 900 µ / m were produced. Also, 92% porous 10, 20 and 40 ppi 6101-T6 open cell aluminum metal foams with compression factors 1,2, and 3 that have the same
finned volume of microchannels with exactly same dimensions were used to manufacture heat sinks with method of vacuum brazing. They all have tested under same conditions with volumetric flow rate ranging from 0,167 l/min to 1,33 l/min and 60 W of heat power. Channel height was 4 mm for all heat sinks and distilled water used as cooling fluid. After experiments, pressure drops and thermal resistances were compared with tabulated and graphical forms. Also, the use of metal foam and microchannel heat sinks were highlighted with their advantages and disadvantages for future projects.

The test facility ROCOM (Rossendorf Coolant Mixing Model) has been built for the investigation of coolant mixing processes in the reactor pressure vessel of pressurised water reactors (PWR). ROCOM is a 1:5 model of the German PWR KONVOI and has been designed for a wide range of different mixing scenarios. ROCOM disposes of four loops with fully controllable coolant pumps. The test facility is operated with demineralised water. For the investigation of mixing, tracer solution (water labelled with salt) is injected into the facility. The transient distribution of the electrical conductivity is is measured at different positions of the flow path by means of wire-mesh sensor technique with high resolution in space and time. The measured conductivity is transformed into a dimensionless mixing scalar. The mixing at quasi-stationary conditions (constant loop mass flow rates) has been investigated in the presented experiments. That concerned nominal operation conditions, the operation with a reduced number of loops and the investigation of cold-water transients with running pumps and conditions of developed natural circulation. In special experimental series, the reproducibility of the results at identicla boundary conditions within the confidence intervalls has been shown. Further, the influence of various factors on the mixing has been investigated. This included the pressure losses at the core bottom plate, the global coolant flow level and the influence of the loop flow rate on the perturbed sector at the core inlet. An analysis of the measurement error of the used measurement technique completes the report.

Numerical Investigation of the Aerodynamic Vibration Excitation of High-Pressure Turbine RotorsJöcker, Markus January 2002 (has links)
<p>The design parameters axial gap and stator count of highpressure turbine stages are evaluated numerically towards theirinfluence on the unsteady aerodynamic excitation of rotorblades. Of particular interest is if and how unsteadyaerodynamic considerations in the design could reduce the riskofhigh cycle fatigue (HCF) failures of the turbine rotor.</p><p>A well-documented 2D/Q3D non-linear unsteady code (UNSFLO)is chosen to perform the stage flow analyses. The evaluatedresults are interpreted as aerodynamic excitation mechanisms onstream sheets neglecting 3D effects. Mesh studies andvalidations against measurements and 3D computations provideconfidence in the unsteady results. Three test cases areanalysed. First, a typical aero-engine high pressure turbinestage is studied at subsonic and transonic flow conditions,with four axial gaps (37% - 52% of cax,rotor) and two statorconfigurations (43 and 70 NGV). Operating conditions areaccording to the resonant conditions of the blades used inaccompanied experiments. Second, a subsonic high pressureturbine intended to drive the turbopump of a rocket engine isinvestigated. Four axial gap variations (10% - 29% ofcax,rotor) and three stator geometry variations are analysed toextend and generalise the findings made on the first study.Third, a transonic low pressure turbine rotor, known as theInternational Standard Configuration 11, has been modelled tocompute the unsteady flow due to blade vibration and comparedto available experimental data.</p><p>Excitation mechanisms due to shock, potential waves andwakes are described and related to the work found in the openliterature. The strength of shock excitation leads to increasedpressure excitation levels by a factor 2 to 3 compared tosubsonic cases. Potential excitations are of a typical wavetype in all cases, differences in the propagation direction ofthe waves and the wave reflection pattern in the rotor passagelead to modifications in the time and space resolved unsteadypressures on the blade surface. The significant influence ofoperating conditions, axial gap and stator size on the wavepropagation is discussed on chosen cases. The wake influence onthe rotorblade unsteady pressure is small in the presentevaluations, which is explicitly demonstrated on the turbopumpturbine by a parametric study of wake and potentialexcitations. A reduction in stator size (towards R≈1)reduces the potential excitation part so that wake andpotential excitation approach in their magnitude.</p><p>Potentials to reduce the risk of HCF excitation in transonicflow are the decrease of stator exit Mach number and themodification of temporal relations between shock and potentialexcitation events. A similar temporal tuning of wake excitationto shock excitation appears not efficient because of the smallwake excitation contribution. The increase of axial gap doesnot necessarily decrease the shock excitation strength neitherdoes the decrease of vane size because the shock excitation mayremain strong even behind a smaller stator. A critical assessment of the impact of involuntary resettlement on the lives of Basotho people : the case study of Lesotho Highlands Water Project, Lesotho.Sephula, Bakoena Augustine. January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this research project is to explore the socio-economic and environmental effects experienced by the relocated population at Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP). Large dams are constructed for irrigation, generation of hydroelectricity, consumption and so forth. In the case of Lesotho, the LHWP was constructed with the purpose of selling water to South Africa to earn royalties and generate hydroelectricity. Despite the fact that a number of factors are advanced to justify the construction of large dams, phenomenal experience has shown that the consequences emanating from their construction are sometimes irreversible and painful, for instance resettlement. This research study therefore sought to investigate the socio-economic and environmental impacts experienced by the affected community emanating from LHWP resettlement programme at Ha Thetsane and Ha Makhalanyane; whether the standard of living of resettlees as measured in terms of access to services has improved or not; the extent of their participation in the resettlement programme; their perception on their standard of living; the extent to which the people have adapted to their forced removal from their homelands; investigate the compensation process; and make tailored recommendations concerning the environmental impacts of involuntary resettlement on the lives of the Basotho people.
Qualitative approach was used to collect both primary and secondary data. Literature review was undertaken to provide background information to the problem statement, the methodology design, the theories and other factors used to justify the construction of large dams. The existing literature led to a deeper understanding of the impacts of larger dams, reaction towards construction of large dams and Lesotho’s experience regarding the construction of large dams. Interviews were also conducted. The data collected were written into descriptive analysis form. The resettlement programme at Ha Thetsane and Ha Makhalanyane has resulted in both positive and negative impacts. The study has concluded that there is a need to engage all the stakeholders affected by involuntary resettlement through a transparent public participation process; consider more sustainable means of livelihoods; furnish resettlees with information on the options to enable them to make informed decisions; fulfil promises in order to build trust with the resettlees. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2011.

Forced Migration and Resettlement in the Pacific - Development of a Model addressing the Resettlement of Forced Migrants in the Pacific Islands Region from Analysis of the Banaban and Bikinian CasesCollins, Dominic Noel January 2009 (has links)
There are currently several potential threats to the long-term habitability of many atolls and islands in the Pacific Islands region, with environmental change appearing the most serious. Minimal attention has been given to the possibility that migrants forced from uninhabitable islands will require resettlement en masse, and assessing past resettlements is crucial to planning for what the future my hold.
Population resettlement is not a new phenomenon in the Pacific Islands region, yet recently it has been neglected by academics. This study builds on past work by Bedford and assesses the current literature in the fields of population resettlement and forced migration, finding that the situation threatening the Pacific Islands is not adequately addressed by any of the planning or analytical tools available. A model based predominantly on the work of Cernea and Muggah was developed by the author to account for this theoretical shortcoming.
The model is used to assess the past cases of resettlement from Banaba and Bikini Atoll, identifying variables which influence the success of resettlement. Conclusions are drawn from the case studies and recommendations for how to avoid negative outcomes in future resettlements are made. This study advances the current literature, provides an in-depth analysis of pressing yet hitherto avoided issues, and can inform both foreign and domestic policy planning in not just Pacific Island states, but receiver states and other potentially effected islands or atolls regardless of region.

The effect of early-life exposure of rats to venlafaxine on behaviour and neurological markers of antidepressant action in adulthood / Renier KrugerKruger, Renier January 2014 (has links)
Major depression is a serious mood disorder affecting more than 120 million people worldwide, irrespective of their race or socio-economic status. This psychiatric disorder is predicted to become the second leading cause of disability by the year 2020, second only to heart diseases in the global population, without distinguishing differences in the incidence within defined age groups. Depression is known to affect people across all age groups, including children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics, although older age is associated with an increased susceptibility to major depression and other psychiatric conditions. Until the 1970‘s depression during childhood and adolescence was thought to be uncommon or non-existent. Recent epidemiological studies have demonstrated that there is a persistent escalation in the prevalence of depression in children and adolescents. Accordingly, the number of prescriptions for drugs to treat this disorder in juveniles has escalated significantly. With our current limited understanding of the safety and long-term effects of treatment with antidepressants, the clinician is left making decisions without sound evidence of safety. In addition, psychotropic drugs may affect neurodevelopment during childhood and adolescence and may consequently modulate susceptibility to psychiatric disorders later in life.
The objective of the current study was to investigate the effects of early-life (pre-natal and postnatal) chronic treatment with venlafaxine, a dual action serotonin-noradrenalin reuptake inhibitor, during the developmental phase of the serotonin and norepinephrine pathways in stress-sensitive rats on measures of cognition, anxiety-like and depressive-like behaviour later in life. The study also investigated which age shows optimal behavioural changes later in life, following the above mentioned administration of venlafaxine. In addition we also determined the effects that the administration of venlafaxine has on the levels of monoamines l-norepinephrine (l-NE) and serotonin (5-HT) in the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus. A number of translational animal models of psychiatric disorders have been described and validated, and is suitable for such investigations. For the current study we used stress-sensitive Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) rats and their controls, Flinders Resistant Line (FRL) rats. Pregnant dams were injected subcutaneously for 14 days with 10 mg/kg venlafaxine or saline from pre-natal day 15 (ND-15) to ND-01. New-born pups were then injected subcutaneously with 3 mg/kg venlafaxine or saline for 14 days from postnatal day 3 (ND+03) to ND+17. These doses were determined from previous studies reported in literature. Four rat treatment groups of both FSL and FRL rats received injections during pre-natal + postnatal ages as follows: saline + saline, venlafaxine + saline, saline + venlafaxine and venlafaxine + venlafaxine. Following the drug treatments, all rat groups were housed under normal conditions until the indicated time to be subjected to a battery of behavioural tests, including the novel object recognition test (nORT), locomotor activity test (Digiscan®), elevated plus maze (EPM) and forced-swim test (FST), scheduled on either ND+35, ND+60 or ND+90. Separate treatment groups were used for each age group. After the behavioural tests animals were decapitated, the brains removed and the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus dissected out. These were analysed at a later stage using an HPLC with electrochemical detection to determine the levels of the monoamines l-NE and 5-HT. All animal procedures were approved by the Ethics Committee of the North-West University (approval number: NWU-00045-10-S5), and are in accordance with the recommendations of the National Institutes of Health guide for the care and use of laboratory animals.
The data from the current study suggest that in general FRL rats were not influenced by the early-life treatment with venlafaxine, as observed in the nORT, EPM or FST on ND+35, ND+60 or ND+90. There was minimal changes seen in the immobile behaviour in the FST of FRL rats that received prenatal venlafaxine. As expected, depressive-like behaviour in the FST was significantly enhanced in FSL rats relative to corresponding FRL rat groups as observed at ND+35 and ND+60, but not ND+90. Importantly, depressive-like behaviour was reversed following pre- and postnatal treatment with venlafaxine in FSL rats at ND+60, relative to the corresponding FRL rat groups. Reversal of depressive-like behaviour in FSL rats were not observed at ND+35 or ND+90, suggesting a delayed response that is reversed later in adulthood. The data from the nORT, Digiscan® or EPM did not reveal any significant differences between the various FSL treatment groups, including at ND+60.
The current study therefore demonstrated that the treatment regimen employed had a transient effect on depressive-like behaviour later in life and suggested that genetic susceptibility plays an important role in the treatment of depression. This was suggested by the venlafaxine-induced decrease in immobile behaviour exhibited by FSL rats at ND+60 in the FST, and the subsequent increase in immobile behaviour at ND+90.
