Residential Water Conservation: A Cross Comparative Analysis

Cook, Jeffrey M 01 December 2011 (has links)
This thesis will explore different water conservation strategies and systems in the residential home, using the city of Irvine as a basis. The thesis will compare the financial implications between the different systems and as a return on investment. The analysis will also account for ecological and social implications on the occupants, in particular their standard of living and lifestyle changes. The thesis will explore the ability to conserve water in new residential construction and will provide a sustainable and conscientious schematic water design for the particular area of concern. This thesis will act as a preliminary case study for a water system in a California residential home. It will address the entire lifecycle of water after it arrives on site, to the use of the water and eventual expenditure. A comprehensive design solution will be proposed, based on the body of knowledge in the field and the research findings. The design will also evaluate the alternatives of different systems, in terms of: catchment, treatment, filtering, reuse, and for returning the used water back into nature (sometimes through a municipal system). It is expected that the proposed system will inform the occupants of their water usage, and simultaneously control and reduce water usage levels. As part of the final proposal, a detailed analysis will be provided of the entire water system. It will involve a critical analysis of existing systems as well as the application of the new design. The thesis will highlight how decisions were made based on the criteria that would affect the occupants, allowing for future adaptations of the solution to projects or case studies with different standards. The end-product of the research will be a baseline development that can be further explored as technology and demand change in the future, and when on-site water systems become more abundant and better understood.

Stockholm Roofscape Revisited

Peirone, Udriot, Luciano January 2016 (has links)
STOCKHOLM Roofscape Revisited is the vision of a vertical densification and continuation of the 19th century city. A translation that negotiates the historicity of Stockholm´s cityscape with a contemporary approach, drawing on the existing while projecting forward. Starting from the specific characteristics of  each building that I´ve worked with, the continuation materializes through vertical additions that aim at being playful amplifications of each building´s stylistic language, adhering to the past wile suggesting something new.   THE PROJECT deals with our relation to the architecture of the 19th century city as a central bearer of western history and identity. It investigates the possibility of negotiating the formal diversity and richness of Stockholms historicistic and eclectic styles with a contemporary approach that uses the dreamscapes and fictional imagery from to the world of comics and film, as reference and speculative tool.

"Change Emergence" : (Investigating and Exploring the Potential of Computational Design in Renovation and Development) / "Emergent förändring" : (En undersökning av potentialen i digital design inomrenovering och projektutveckling)

Saeidi Derakhshi, Sareh January 2015 (has links)
ABSTRACT (DESIGN HYPOTHESIS AND COLLABORATION OBJECTIVES) This research proposes the renovation of a case study project - a cluster of residential buildings in Södermalm, Stockholm - based on the integration of energy simulation and climate engineering to introduce the idea of adaptive resuse[MJ1] . The focus has been on solar analysis and daylight utilization with the goal to improve both the living quality of the interior and solar harvesting on the exterior for an optimal generation utilization of energy. The research, therefore, has been conducted in collaboration between students of architecture and energy engineering, and Teknikmarknad, a practice-oriented entity at KTH, for support regarding technical issues. Stockholmshem, the property owner, has also been directly involved for specific information on the future plans and proposals. Another informative collaborator has been the Critical Design Studio at the school, who has conducted a thorough research on the social aspects of the neighborhood and conducted many interviews with the residents on the new proposal plans of the change and how they see it. This investigation has also enabled the possibility of further investment and research on a smart envelope; envisioning a kinetic design, solar tracking system, for a higher efficiency in solar gains and a sustainable approach to indoor climatic conditions.  The envelope design has been tested through analyzing tools and energy calculations, prototyping and scaled-models. A key aspect in the project has been the evaluation of an interdisciplinary approach from the early stages of the design to envision and formulate a design strategy that clarifies the technical aspects and design opportunities on both ends which could be transferable to similar developments and future practice.

Effects of a Same-Day Post-detoxification Residential Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment Admission Policy

Garland, Benjamin H., Mindrup, Robert M., Zottarelli, Lisa K., McCarley, Jill D. 01 January 2021 (has links)
This study examined pre- and post-implementation of a same-day post-detoxification residential admission policy within a Veteran Health Administration (VHA) facility to determine improved outcomes consistent with the larger literature. A single facility sample of participants who received detoxification from alcohol pre- and post-policy change was identified utilizing administrative and health record data. Chi-square testing and independent samples T-testing evaluated changes between a 2018 pre-policy cohort and a 2019 post-policy cohort. Policy implementation of same-day admissions to residential treatment after detoxification resulted in statistically significant change in instances of waiting, wait times for participants who waited, no-show, and readmissions during the six months following inpatient discharge. Mortality, cancellation rates, and discharge type did not differ significantly. These findings further support previous research that outlines the relationship between efficient post-detoxification continuity of care and increased positive outcomes.

An Effort to Refine Home Energy Assessment Methods in Support of Retrofit Decision Making

Ladipo, Oluwateniola Eniola 05 June 2013 (has links)
This research evaluates current home energy assessment tools and practices and investigates their applicability in terms of relevance supporting retrofit decision making in Southwest Virginia. Home energy assessments and audits are comprised of many different tools, strategies, and practices all with the same goal, to achieve accuracy in assessing performance as well as confidence in achieving energy savings from retrofit recommendations. Differing opinions, training, and standards in energy assessments have led to a reduced confidence and reliance on energy assessments, which can ultimately lead to poor retrofit decisions and undesired outcomes. This research undertook an investigation of current tools and practices as well as modeling studies to reveal insights into strengths and weaknesses, and to refine home energy assessments. The goal was to identify opportunities to increase confidence for stakeholders by analyzing energy assessments in terms of what strategies are most suitable to increase the accuracy of capturing different energy influence parameters, as well as to provide a basis for future research and development in this subject area. / Master of Science
