Design And Characterization Of Electromagnetic Wave Absorbing Structural Compsites

Gurer, Goksu 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is one of the most common problems encountered in microwave applications. Interaction of electromagnetic (EM) waves from different sources may result in device malfunction due to misinterpretation of the transferred data or information loss. On the other hand, development of materials with reduced radar detectability is desired in defense applications. Considering the limitations in weight and thickness, development of lightweight structural materials with enhanced electromagnetic absorption potential is needed. In this study, development and characterization of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite materials to be used in EM wave absorbing or EMI shielding applications was aimed. Incorporation of electromagnetic wave absorption characteristic has been achieved by the application of conductive thin film on fiber glass woven fabric reinforcement layers. Characterization of EM wave absorption potential was conducted using &ldquo / free-space method&rdquo / in 18 &ndash / 27 GHz frequency range. Single and multilayered combinations of surface-modified fiber glass woven fabrics were characterized in terms of their EM wave interaction properties and design principles for efficient broadband EM wave absorbing multilayered GFRP composite material have been presented. A computer aided computation method has also developed in order to predict EM wave transmission, reflection, and hence absorption characteristics of multilayered structures from single layer properties. Estimated results were verified compared to free-space measurement results. In the current study, up to 85% electromagnetic wave absorption has been obtained within 18-27 GHz frequency range (K band). Enhancement of EM wave absorption potential of multilayer structure has also been demonstrated by computer aided computation.

In this aspect the technical textiles are distinguished from conventional textile materials, in which the aesthetic and of comfort needs are of primordial importance. Based on these considerations, the subject of this dissertation was established having as its main focus the study of development of textile structures from aramid and glass fibers and acting in order to develop the manufacture of composite materials that combine properties of two different structures, manufactured in an identical operation, where each structure contributes to improving the properties of the resulting composite material. Therefore were created in laboratory scale, textile structures with low weight and different composition: aramid (100%), glass (100%) and aramid /glass (65/35%), in order to use them as a reinforcing element in composite materials with polyester matrix. These composites were tested in tension and its fracture surface, evaluated by MEV. Based on the analysis of mechanical properties of the developed composites, the efficiency of the structures prepared as reinforcing element were testified by reason of that the resistance values of the composites are far superior to the polyester matrix. It was also observed that hybridization in tissue structure was efficient, since the best results obtained were for hybrid composites, where strength to the rupture was similar to the steel 1020, reaching values on the order of 340 MPa / Os materiais denominados t?xteis t?cnicos podem ser definidos como estruturas projetadas e desenvolvidas com a fun??o de atender a requisitos funcionais espec?ficos de diversos setores da ind?stria, caso da ind?stria automotiva e aeroespacial. Kleicke, Roland 22 February 2018 (has links) (PDF)
The development of non-crimped-fabrics (NCF) is subject of current research activities. These often led to special machines for very special applications. There is no systematic analysis and optimization of the properties of composites based on the state of the art. The aim of this dissertation is to close this gap and to contribute to the establishment of woven NCF in fiber-reinforced composites. The work is based partially on the results obtained at the Institut für Textilmaschinen und textile Hochleistungswerkstofftechnik der Technischen Universität Dresden from 2006 to 2012 within the framework of various AiF and DFG projects. Further reflections were made between 2015 and 2017 as part of a doctoral study at the Chair of Textile Technologien der Technischen Universität Chemnitz. As shown from examples of the design, weaving is reaching technological limits, especially for applications in composite construction. First of all, conventional surface formation methods are compared with the requirements of end users, especially from the composites industry. From this, a requirement profile is derived for a requirements-based surface formation process and constructive proposals for solutions for its implementation are identified.

Amélioration des performances des matériaux fibreux non-tissés chargés par décharge couronne utilisés pour la filtration de l'air / Improved performance of nonwoven fibrous materials charged by corona discharge used for air filtration

Fatihou, Ali 12 October 2016 (has links)
The experimental approach undertaken in this thesis was aimed at the study of the factors affecting the collection efficiency of nonwoven media charged by corona discharge, used for air filtration. Research was focused on techniques using the corona discharge generated by wire-plane and triode configurations (dual electrode + grid + ground plane). The study was conducted in three phases: (1) development of experimental devices to generate corona discharge and measure the electrical potential on the surface of charged samples; (2) characterization of the electrostatic charge state of the media; (3) evaluation of the collection efficiency, correlated with the results of charge measurements. The charge distribution was more homogeneous in triode configuration and the charge level was higher in positive polarity. The sample movement in the electric discharge zone allowed for more uniform distribution of the charge. The increase of the discharge current and gate voltage amplifies the charge level of the media, due to the intensification of the average electric field between the active electrode and the ground plane (configuration wire - plane) or between the gate and the ground plane (in triode configuration). The collection efficiency is better when the charge is uniformly deposited, under the action of a strong electric field. It is higher for the so-called "multi-layer" configurations where the capture of the particles is improved by the combination of several physical mechanisms, involving electrical and mechanical forces.

Development of three-dimensional profiled woven fabrics on narrow fabric looms

Fazeli, Monireh, Kern, Martin, Hoffmann, Gerald, Cherif, Chokri 18 September 2019 (has links)
Three-dimensional (3D) profiled woven fabrics with varying cross-sections along the component parts are needed in a number of industrial applications. One of the main advantages of the ribbon loom weaving technique is the ability to produce highly diverse structures with open or closed edges. The realization of 3D profiled woven fabrics that satisfy the requirements is directly connected to the ability to process high-performance fibers in the weft direction. The processing of high-performance yarns in the weft direction with low fiber damage will open new application areas for shuttle weaving machines. By employing modified mechanical loom elements, the variety of producible structures can be increased significantly.

Characterisation of the mechanical behaviour of networks and woven fabrics with a discrete homogenization model / Caractérisation du comportement mécanique des réseaux et des tissus avec un modèle d'homogénéisation discret

Gazzo, Salvatore 10 June 2019 (has links)
In the past decades there has been an impressive progress in the development of new materials for mechanical related applications. New generations of composites have been developed, that can offer advantages over the unidirectional fibre-reinforced mats commonly used then materials take the name of woven fabrics. The behaviour of this material is strongly influenced by the micro-structure of the material. In the thesis mechanical models and a numerical scheme able to model the mechanical behaviour of woven fabrics and general network materials have been developed. The model takes in to account the micro-structure by means of a homogenization technique. The fibres in the network have been treated like microbeams, having both extensional and bending stiffness, with different types of connection, according to the pattern and detail of the network. The developed procedure was applied for obtaining the homogenized mechanical models for some types of biaxial and quadriaxial networks of fibres, simulating either fibre nets (in this case rigid connection were assumed among the fibres) or tissues with negligible interaction between the fibre bundles, and with relative sliding prevented (in this case the connections were simulated by means of pivots). Different geometries were analysed, including the cases in which the fibres are not orthogonal. A first gradient medium is usually obtained but, in some cases, the homogenization procedure itself indicates that a higher order continuum is better fit to represent the deformation of the micro-structure. Special results were obtained for the case of fibres connected by pivots. In this cases an orthotropic material with zero shear modulus was obtained. Such a material has a not elliptic constitutive tensor, thus it can lead to strain concentrations. However, it was shown that some considerations about the physical behaviour of such networks indicated that higher order terms had to be included in the expansion of the internal forces and deformations, so that a strain gradient material was obtained. The results obtained can be used for the design of specific materials requiring ad-hoc properties. Although the reference model is a network material, the results obtained can be applied to other similar kinds of microstructures, like pantographic materials, micro devices composed by microbeams etc. They have been limited at the range of linear elasticity, that is small deformation and linear elastic behaviour. Then, numerical simulations were focused on extension tests and bias tests. The obtained deformed configurations are consistent with the literature experimental tests, both for balanced and unbalanced tissues. Moreover, a comparison between first and second gradient numerical predictions was performed. It was observed that second gradient predictions better simulate the experimental evidences.
