A general computational tool for structure synthesisHe, Peiren 05 November 2008 (has links)
Synthesis of structures is a very difficult task even with only a small number of components that form a system; yet it is the catalyst of innovation. Molecular structures and nanostructures typically have a large number of similar components but different connections, which manifests a more challenging task for their synthesis. <p>
This thesis presents a novel method and its related algorithms and computer programs for the synthesis of structures. This novel method is based on several concepts: (1) the structure is represented by a graph and further by the adjacency matrix; and (2) instead of only exploiting the eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix, both the eigenvalue and the eigenvector are exploited; specifically the components of the eigenvector have been found very useful in algorithm development. This novel method is called the Eigensystem method.<p>
The complexity of the Eigensystem method is equal to that of the famous program called Nauty in the combinatorial world. However, the Eigensystem method can work for the weighted and both directed and undirected graph, while the Nauty program can only work for the non-weighted and both directed and undirected graph. The cause for this is the different philosophies underlying these two methods. The Nauty program is based on the recursive component decomposition strategy, which could involve some unmanageable complexities when dealing with the weighted graph, albeit no such an attempt has been reported in the literature. It is noted that in practical applications of structure synthesis, weighted graphs are more useful than non-weighted graphs for representing physical systems. <p>
Pivoted at the Eigensystem method, this thesis presents the algorithms and computer programs for the three fundamental problems in structure synthesis, namely the isomorphism/automorphism, the unique labeling, and the enumeration of the structures or graphs.

An Investigation of College Students¡¦ Quality of Life and Occupational SelectionsZou, Dong-ting 02 August 2012 (has links)
This study investigated the significant differences and correlations on college students' quality of life and their occupational selections. A total of 870 college students were stratified randomly selected from 15 Taiwanese colleges. All participants completed "quality of life" and "occupational selections" scales. In addition, 4 target students with either the highest total scores on quality of life or with the highest total scores on occupational selections were recruited for individual follow-up interview. Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and canonical correlation assessed the similarities and differences between groups. The initial findings were as follows:
1. College students¡¦ quality of life and occupational selections appear to have upper middle satisfaction and identification.
2. Female college students' mean score on the dimension of "domestic factor' was significantly higher than their male counterparts.
3. The first birth born college students' total mean on the "quality of life' and the dimension of "mental health' were significantly higher than the last birth born college students.
4. College students with high educational expectation had significantly higher mean scores on the "occupational selections", dimensions of "domestic factor' and "occupational / social factor' than these low educational expectation participants.
5. College students from mothers with high educational levels presented significantly higher means on "quality of life ' and the dimension of "occupational / social factor" than their counterparts.
6. College students from mothers with high educational levels presented significantly higher means on "quality of life', "occupational selections' and the dimension of "occupational /social factor' than their counterparts.
7. Students come from private technology colleges presented significantly higher mean scores on "quality of life', "occupational selections', and dimensions of "physical health' ,"individual factor' and "domestic factor' than their counterparts.
8. High academic achievement college students' mean scores on the "quality of life', and the dimensions of "social health' and "individual factor' were significantly higher than these low academic college students.
9. College students from high income families presented significantly higher means on the dimensions of "mental health' and "social health' than these low income families¡¦ college students.
10. There were significant canonical correlations between college students' quality of
life and occupational selections.
Based on these results, some educational implications and suggestions are discussed.

And college students who major in liberal arts domain¡¦s mean score on dimensions of ¡§information creating¡¨ were significantly higher than agronomy major¡¦s college students.
5.College students with higher reading frequency¡¦s mean score on ¡§reading motivation¡¨ and ¡§internet literacy¡¨ were significantly higher than low reading frequency college students.
6.College students with higher book-borrowing frequency¡¦s mean score on ¡§reading motivation¡¨, dimensions of ¡§information creating¡¨ were significantly higher than low book-borrowing frequency college students.

Investigating the Correlation between Swallow Accelerometry Signal Parameters and Anthropometric and Demographic Characteristics of Healthy AdultsHanna, Fady 24 February 2009 (has links)
Thesis studied correlations between swallowing accelerometry parameters and anthropometrics in 50 healthy participants. Anthropometrics include: age, gender, weight, height, body fat percent, neck circumference and mandibular length. Dual-axis swallowing signals, from a biaxial accelerometer were obtained for 5-saliva and 10-water (5-wet and 5-wet chin-tuck) swallows per participant.
Two patient-independent automatic segmentation algorithms using discrete wavelet transforms of swallowing sequences segmented: 1) saliva/wet swallows and 2) wet chin-tuck swallows. Extraction of swallows hinged on dynamic thresholding based on signal statistics.
Canonical correlation analysis was performed on sets of anthropometric and swallowing signal variables including: variance, skewness, kurtosis, autocorrelation decay time, energy, scale and peak-amplitude. For wet swallows, significant linear relationships were found between signal and anthropometric variables. In superior-inferior directions, correlations linked weight, age and gender to skewness and signal-memory. In anterior-posterior directions, age was correlated with kurtosis and signal-memory. No significant relationship was observed for dry and wet chin-tuck swallowing

The Differential Operator D is a linear operator from C1[0,1] onto C[0,1]. Its domain C1[0,1] is thoroughly studied as a meager subspace of C[0,1]. This is analogous to the status of the set of all rational numbers Q in the set of the real numbers R. On the polynomial vector space Pn the Differential Operator D is a nilpotent operator. Using the invariant subspace and reducing subspace technique an appropriate basis for the underlying vector space can be found so that the nilpotent operator admits its Jordan Canonical form. The study of D on Pn is completely carried out. Finally, the solution space V of the nth order differential equation with leading coefficient one is studied. The behavior of D on V is explored using some notions from linear algebra and linear operators. In principle, the matrix exponential could be computed in many ways. In practice, some of the methods are preferable to others, but none are completely satisfactory. Computations of the matrix exponential using Taylor Series, Scaling and Squaring, Eigenvectors, and the Schur Decomposition methods are provided.

Pirmojoje darbo dalyje remiantis Lietuvos Respublikos Civiliniu Kodeksu ir 1983 metų Kanonų Teisės Kodeksu yra nagrinėjama santuokos institucijos samprata. Aptariama santuokos samprata pagal Lietuvos Respublikos Civilinį Kodeksą ir pateikiami santuokos sudarymui keliami reikalavimai. Nagrinėjami bažnytinės teisės reikalavimai kanoninės santuokos sudarymui bei pateikiama kanoninės teisės ir civilinės teisės bendrumai santuokos atžvilgiu. Antroji darbo dalis skirta vedybų sutarties teisinio reglamentavimo nagrinėjimui. Aptariama vedybų sutarties samprata ir kilmė. Remiantis Lietuvos Respublikos Civiliniu Kodeksu pateikiama vedybų sutarties sudarymo procedūra ir įsigaliojimas, taip pat išanalizuojamos sąlygos vedybų sutarties pakeitimui ir nutraukimui. Time Course of Evoked Action Representations Using Manipulable Upright and Rotated ObjectsKobelsky, Carrie 17 April 2015 (has links)
Evidence suggests that action representations associated with the functional and volumetric properties of an object are part of its conceptual representation (Bub, Masson, & Cree, 2008; Jax & Buxbaum, 2010). To further examine the dynamic interplay between functional and volumetric action representations during object perception, a series of experiments was carried out in which participants made a reach and grasp response in the context of an object pictured either upright or rotated. When trained to identify a colour cue as a prompt to make a specific hand action, with the cue presented at different stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA), participants showed priming effects as early as 300 ms before the presentation of an upright object prime for both functional and volumetric actions. With pictures of hand posture cues, at similar SOAs, participants showed the same pattern of consistent priming effects for both actions types. Surprisingly, a dissociation between the action types occurred when the object primes were rotated, in that only the volumetric and not the functional action representation was evoked. Furthermore, at 0 ms SOA, the primed V-action was associated with the canonical rather than the depicted view of the object. The results clarify the dynamic pattern of F- and V-grasps evoked by visual objects. For upright objects, both F- and V-grasps are strongly evoked over time. Rotated objects show a tendency to evoke only volumetric action representation. The latter result suggests that the V-grasp associated with a rotated object is based on a skeletal form of the object that does not include its functional properties. / Graduate
