Wisdom and salvation history in the wisdom Psalms / by Hyung Guen SimSim, Hyung Guen January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation is an exploration of the relationship of wisdom to salvation history in the book of Psalms. The notional starting point of this thesis is a conviction that there might be a juncture at which the two themes converge because in certain psalms such as Psalm 78, the Israelite concept of salvation appears to have a close relationship with the wisdom theme. In the history of Psalm interpretation so far, the concept of wisdom psalm has not been properly dealt with due to scholastic difficulty in ascertaining the clear criteria of a genre. The process of scrutinizing the history of interpretation showed that the Psalms in their final form were far more purposeful than were previously understood. The major guiding principles of the method employed are: (1) 'the canonical approach' of Brevard Childs; (2) 'the canonical criticism' of James Sanders; (3) 'the canonical process approach' of Bruce Waltke; (4) 'the Christo-canonical approach' of Jerry E. Shepherd; and (5) 'the communito-canonical approach' of deClaissé-Walford. This thesis made use of these methodological principles by attempting to read the Psalter from the beginning to the end, and by focusing mainly on the final stage of the Psalter proposed by B. Waltke as the third stage, or the final and complete Old Testament canon associated with the Second Temple, and by purposefully limiting the scope of our study to around the post-exilic period.
Having dealt with the issue of classifying the wisdom psalm, the presence of the wisdom motif in many psalms which do not fall into the wisdom category serves to add a didactic dimension to the entire Psalter. In so doing, we reach a conclusion that what we are dealing with is not merely the wisdom psalms within the Psalms, but 'the wisdom Psalter' as a literary unit. Then, it can be said that the Psalter is not merely an anthology of individual psalms used for cult, but was meant to be read also as a source of min , an instruction. This means that every psalm in the Psalter has pedagogical potential, which may have been the ostensible intent of the editor(s) at the final stage of the formation of the Psalter.
On this premise, this study attempts to set up a strategy to read the Psalms from the beginning to the end from book I up to book V as a wisdom Psalter, with a particular focus on how the wisdom motif relates to the salvation history motif. The question did not merely concern their interpretation as disjointed pieces, but also what their presence in the book of Psalter meant in terms of the relationship between wisdom and salvation history. This means that the study is influenced less by a historical and form critical approach, but more from a literary and canonical perspective. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Old Testament))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2008.

Release of the MySQL based implementation of the CTS protocolTiepmar, Jochen 20 April 2016 (has links) (PDF)
In a project called "A Library of a Billion Words" we needed an implementation of the CTS protocol that is capable of handling a text collection containing at least 1 billion words. Because the existing solutions did not work for this scale or were still in development I started an implementation of the CTS protocol using methods that MySQL provides. Last year we published a paper that introduced a prototype with the core functionalities without being compliant with the specifications of CTS (Tiepmar et al., 2013). The purpose of this paper is to describe and evaluate the MySQL based implementa-tion now that it is fulfilling the specifications version 5.0 rc.1 and mark it as finished and ready to use. Fur-ther information, online instances of CTS for all de-scribed datasets and binaries can be accessed via the projects website1. Reference Tiepmar J, Teichmann C, Heyer G, Berti M and Crane G. 2013. Canonical forms for Hamiltonian and symplectic matrices and pencilsMehrmann, Volker, Xu, Hongguo 09 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
We study canonical forms for Hamiltonian and
symplectic matrices or pencils under equivalence
transformations which keep the class invariant.
In contrast to other canonical forms our forms
are as close as possible to a triangular structure
in the same class. We give necessary and
sufficient conditions for the existence of
Hamiltonian and symplectic triangular Jordan,
Kronecker and Schur forms. The presented results
generalize results of Lin and Ho [17] and simplify
the proofs presented there.

Multitaper Higher-Order Spectral Analysis of Nonlinear Multivariate Random ProcessesHe, HUIXIA 04 November 2008 (has links)
In this work, I will describe a new statistical tool: the canonical bicoherence, which is a combination of the canonical coherence and the bicoherence. I will provide its definitions, properties, estimation by multitaper methods and statistics, and estimate the variance of the estimates by the weighted jackknife method. I will discuss its applicability and usefulness in nonlinear quadratic phase coupling detection and analysis for multivariate random processes. Furthermore, I will develop the time-varying canonical bicoherence for the nonlinear analysis of non-stationary random processes. In this thesis, the canonical bicoherence is mainly applied in two types of data: a) three-component geomagnetic field data, and b) high-dimensional brain electroencephalogram data. Both results obtained will be linked with physical or physiological interpretations. In particular, this thesis is the first work where the novel method of ``canonical bicoherence'' is introduced and applied to the nonlinear quadratic phase coupling detection and analysis for multivariate random processes. / Thesis (Ph.D, Mathematics & Statistics) -- Queen's University, 2008-10-31 15:03:57.596

Canonical Correlation and Clustering for High Dimensional DataOuyang, Qing January 2019 (has links)
Multi-view datasets arise naturally in statistical genetics when the genetic
and trait profile of an individual is portrayed by two feature vectors.
A motivating problem concerning the Skin Intrinsic Fluorescence (SIF)
study on the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) subjects
is presented. A widely applied quantitative method to explore the correlation
structure between two domains of a multi-view dataset is the
Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA), which seeks the canonical loading
vectors such that the transformed canonical covariates are maximally
correlated. In the high dimensional case, regularization of the dataset is
required before CCA can be applied. Furthermore, the nature of genetic
research suggests that sparse output is more desirable. In this thesis, two
regularized CCA (rCCA) methods and a sparse CCA (sCCA) method
are presented. When correlation sub-structure exists, stand-alone CCA
method will not perform well. To tackle this limitation, a mixture of
local CCA models can be employed. In this thesis, I review a correlation
clustering algorithm proposed by Fern, Brodley and Friedl (2005),
which seeks to group subjects into clusters such that features are identically
correlated within each cluster. An evaluation study is performed
to assess the effectiveness of CCA and correlation clustering algorithms
using artificial multi-view datasets. Both sCCA and sCCA-based correlation
clustering exhibited superior performance compare to the rCCA and
rCCA-based correlation clustering. The sCCA and the sCCA-clustering
are applied to the multi-view dataset consisted of PrediXcan imputed gene
expression and SIF measurements of DCCT subjects. The stand-alone
sparse CCA method identified 193 among 11538 genes being correlated
with SIF#7. Further investigation of these 193 genes with simple linear
regression and t-test revealed that only two genes, ENSG00000100281.9
and ENSG00000112787.8, were significance in association with SIF#7. No
plausible clustering scheme was detected by the sCCA based correlation
clustering method. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)
