Methylaluminoxane, tetraethylaluminum and trimethylaluminum were encapsulated within a silica-based material using a non-hydrolytic sol-gel process. Mixed oxides were also produced by combining silica precursors with Mg(OEt)2, MgCl2 and MgCl2 .6H2O. The resulting xerogels were characterized by a series of complementary techniques to determine the elemental, the structural, the textural and the morphological characteristics of the encapsulated cocatalysts. The nature of the alkyl aluminum strongly affects the gelification time. The amount of encapsulated cocatalyst did not appear to be affected by the alkylaluminum volume, but the silica network and the xerogel organization were, according to infrared and X-ray diffraction measurements. There was a large surface reduction for the encapsulated systems compared with the silica that was synthesized under the same conditions. The resulting supported alkylaluminum was evaluated in the polymerization of ethylene using Cp2ZrCl2 as the catalyst in the presence and the absence of external MAO. The encapsulated cocatalysts were not shown to be active in the Al/Zr range of 250-500. For the mixed systems that combined homogeneous MAO with encapsulated MAO, the addition of the encapsulated cocatalyst did not appear to affect the catalyst activity. The molecular weight of the polymers that were obtained by using the encapsulated cocatalyst was lower than the molecular weight of the polymers that were obtained by using the homogeneous catalyst. Nevertheless, the polydispersity of the polymers that were obtained in the presence of the encapsulated cocatalyst was greater than polydispersity of the polymers that were produced with the homogeneous catalyst or the impregnated MAO.

The non-hydrolytic sol-gel synthesis (NHSG) of Re-Si-Al and Mo-Si-Al mixed oxides was proposed as an innovative one step route to heterogeneous olefin metathesis catalysts. Supported molybdenum oxide catalysts are receiving much attention as a result of their relatively low price, robustness and good activity at low temperature. Supported rhenium oxide catalysts are known to be highly active and selective even at room temperature. However, they are expensive and moderately stable because of the sublimation of the rhenium oxide. The NHSG synthesis used in this work is based on the one pot reaction of chloride precursors (ReCl5 or MoCl3, SiCl4, AlCl3) with diisopropylether (iPr2O) at 110 °C in dichloromethane. The simplicity of NHSG makes it attractive: multi-step procedures, expensive precursors, or reactivity modifiers are not needed. The mixed oxide catalysts exhibited well-controlled compositions and mesoporous textures, with high acid site densities. XRD, XPS and ToF-SIMS showed that the catalysts could be described as an amorphous silica-alumina matrix with well-dispersed Re or Mo surface species. In the case of Re-based catalysts, rhenium losses by sublimation during calcination were observed for the silica-rich formulations. The loss of rhenium could however be avoided by increasing the Al content. More importantly we demonstrate that Re sublimation during calcination of silica-rich formulations is suppressed when the whole preparation procedure (synthesis, washing, drying and calcination) is carried out in the absence of water. Particular attention was devoted to the study of the influence of the composition on texture, structure, acidity and surface properties, which were correlated with the catalytic performances. The performance of selected Re-Si-Al and Mo-Si-Al catalysts was evaluated in the metathesis of propene and in the cross-metathesis of ethene and trans-2-butene. The NHSG catalysts were compared to catalysts of similar compositions prepared by other more methods (impregnation, thermal spreading, flame spray pyrolysis). The catalysts prepared by NHSG have a high specific activity in the metathesis reaction.

Non-hydrolytic sol-gel synthesis of TiO₂-based electrode materials for Li-ion batteries / Synthèse par chimie sol-gel non-hydrolytique de matériaux d’électrodes pour batteries Li-ion à base de TiO₂Escamilla Perez, Angel Manuel 13 October 2017 (has links)
Non-hydrolytic sol-gel (NHSG) provides useful alternatives to conventional sol-gel routes. In particular, the ether route based on the reaction of chloride or oxychloride precursors with ether oxygen donors is a well-established method for the preparation of mesoporous oxides and mixed-oxides. Li-ion batteries are ubiquitous in the field of electrochemical energy storage, from mobile devices to electric and hybrid vehicles. However, commercial electrode materials do not fulfill all the requirements needed for high-power applications. TiO2 is as a promising material to replace graphite anodes in high-power Li-ion batteries, despite its poor electronic conductivity, which must be improved. In this context, the objective of this PhD thesis is the conception of different TiO2-based electrode materials benefitting from NHSG advantages. Two different approaches were developed, using the ether route in the absence of any solvent or additive. First, hierarchical mesoporous oxides, TiO2 and TiO2-V2O5, were synthesized by calcination of xerogels in air. Secondly, mesoporous nanocomposites built of carbon-coated TiO2 nanoparticles were obtained by pyrolysis under argon of the xerogels; in this case, the ether is used for the first time as both as an oxygen donor and a carbon source. The texture and the structure of the resulting materials were characterized by N2 physisorption, electron microscopy, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy. TiO2/C samples were further analyzed by TGA and 13C CPMAS-NMR. Galvanostatic cycling at different current rates was performed to determine the electrochemical performances in lithium insertion-deinsertion.

Synthèse d'oxydes mixtes par sol-gel non hydrolytique : vers le design de nouveaux catalyseurs adaptés à la conversion de composés biosourcés / Synthesis of mixed oxides by non-hydrolytic sol-gel : through the design of new catalysts adapted for the conversion of bio-based componentsBrisou, Anna 07 June 2017 (has links)
The design of new heterogeneous catalysts with good hydrothermal stability that are able to transform bio-based components into building blocks in one single catalytic process is a main challenge in material science. In this context, binary and ternary mixed oxides of silica doped with W, Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta et Mg (3 to 20%at.) have been produced with the non-conventional Non-Hydrolytic Sol-Gel (NHSG) synthesis method. This method enables to obtain highly homogeneous mixed oxides and to finely shape the properties of the material with the synthesis parameters. The solids are mostly amorphous and mesoporous. TEM-EDS, FTIR and ToF-SIMS analysis indicate that the doping elements are highly dispersed in the silica and that most of the mixed oxides display nanometric or atomic scale homogeneity. The NH3 and CO bases show the presence of mostly Lewis weak and medium strength acid sites for these materials. The acid sites density can be improved through: increasing mixed oxide homogeneity, preparing ternary mixed oxides, increasing doping element content. The conversion of the mixture cyclopentanol/cyclohexanone in the gas phase shows that the majority of the materials perform both dehydration and hydrogen transfer reactions (MPVO reduction). After steaming at 400°C, the solids maintain good textures, particularly ternary mixed oxides and mixed oxides containing high dopant content. This study shows the versatility of the NHSG synthesis method and its applicability in order to design binary and ternary mixed oxides. The ternary mixed oxides containing 20%at. of doping elements with Nb, Zr and Ta are promising for the conversion of bio-based compounds.

Synthèse par chimie douce et étude structurale de nanocristaux d'oxydes métalliques / Soft chemistry synthesis and structural study of metal oxide nanoparticlesLemarchand, Alex 20 December 2018 (has links)
The aim of this work was to synthesize small size (~1-3 nm) metal oxide nanocrystals namely titanium dioxide (TiO2), tin dioxide (SnO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO), and to study their structure. Syntheses were conducted via non-aqueous or even strictly non-hydrolytic sol-gel methods under kinetic control. The structural characterization was mainly carried out by X-Ray diffraction methods, transmission electronic microscopy and the study of pair distribution functions, obtained by X Ray total scattering, coupled with atomic scale modelling methods. In the case of TiO2, anatase nanocrystals were obtained with sizes ranging between 4 nm and 8 nm. The molar ratio of the oxygen donor with respect to titanium was shown to be an important parameter to control the nanoparticle size. In peculiar conditions we have been able to isolate an intermediate phase characterized by very small sized and poorly crystallized nanoparticles which the structure can be assimilated to a disordered brookite structure. Concerning SnO2, rutile-type nanocrystals were synthesized with sizes ranging between 2 nm and 4 nm. The use of an ether as oxygen donor led to the simultaneous formation of an organic polymeric phase and of primary nanoparticles characterized by an intermediate structure close but still different from the rutile-type structure. Moreover, the use of benzyl-type solvents in the presence of tin tetrachloride led to the formation of water in the system. Lastly, for ZnO, we have shown that using an organic base to induce the formation of the metal oxide network in a methanolic solution of zinc acetate in the presence of a strong complexing agent of the zinc allowed us to obtain wurtzite nanocrystals of ultrasmall sizes around 1 nm. Even for the smallest sizes, the nanoparticles exhibit a structure very close to that of wurtzite with an increasing disorder of the cationic network.
