Darbo metu buvo išnagrinėta įvairių faktorių (kovariančių) įtaka reumatoidiniu artritu sergančio 531 ligonio mirtingumui. Buvo taikomas vienas iš regresinių išgyvenamumo modelių – Cox’o modelis. Iš minėtos 531 ligonio imties mirę buvo 32 ligoniai. Iš pradžių buvo tiriama ligonių imtis laiko nuo ligos pradžios aspektu. Šiuo atveju prognozuojantys veiksniai buvo amžius, kada liga buvo diagnozuota (AMZDGN), lytis (LYTKOD), gydymas Metotreksatu (GYD_MTX) ir gydymas Azatriopinu/Imuranu (AZA_IMUR). Vėliau, tiriant ligonių mirtingumą kaip amžiaus funkciją, nustatyti svarbiausi lemiantys veiksniai buvo šie: ligonių lytis (LYTKOD) ir gydymas Azatriopinu/Imuranu (AZA_IMUR). Gauti rezultatai, t.y. ligonių išgyvenamumą lemiančios kovariantės (veiksniai), beveik visiškai sutampa su gydytojų nurodytais. Tai dar kartą patvirtina matematinių statistinių modelių, šiuo atveju nagrinėjamo Cox‘o modelio, taikymo realiame gyvenime, svarbą. Kitai duomenų imčiai, t.y. vėžiu sergančių ligonių duomenų aibei, buvo taikomas Persikertančių mirimų intensyvumų (SCE) modelis, t.y. tikrinama Cox‘o modelio adekvatumo duomenims hipotezė. Hipotezė buvo atmesta, nes minėtiems duomenims Cox‘o modelis negalioja. Pagrindinis darbo rezultatas yra šis: gautas kriterijus Cox‘o modelio adekvatumui tikrinti, naudojant nupjautus iš kairės ir cenzūruotus iš dešinės duomenis, sudarytos programos kriterijui realizuoti. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / In this work the Cox proportional hazards model was applied to investigate the influence of various factors (covariates) to mortality of rheumatoid arthritis patients of Vilnius. In the first case, the sample of 531 patients was analysed. Analysing survival of patients of the sample as function of time from the beginnig of the disease, the prognostic factors were LYTKOD (the sex of patients), AMZDGN (patients‘ age, when the rheumatoid arthritis was diagnosed), GYD_MTX (treatment with metotrexat) and AZA_IMUR (treatment with Azatriopin/Imuran). When survival was analysed as function of age then the prognostic factor were LYTKOD (the sex of patients) and AZA_IMUR (treatment with Azatriopin/Imuran). The results are almost identical to those, which doctors suggested. This fact confirms the importance of using mathematical statistical models to solve the problems of the real life. In this case, the importance of using the Cox model. On the other hand, Simple cross-effects (SCE) model was aplied for the sample of canser patients. In the case of this model the hypothesis of Cox model fiting for canser patients‘ data was rejected. The most important result of this work is that the criterion of Cox model fitting to left truncated and right censored data was constructed. Also a program of SAS for the criterion was created. The the hypothesis of Cox model fiting for the rheumatoid arthritis patients wasn‘t rejected, because Cox model fit for these data.

Flexible modelling for the cumulative effects of time-varying exposure, weighted by recency, on the hazardSylvestre, Marie-Pierre. January 2008 (has links)
Many epidemiological studies assess the effects of time-dependent exposures, where both the exposure status and its intensity vary over time. The analysis of such studies poses the challenge of modelling the association between complex time-dependent drug exposure and the risk, especially given the uncertainty about the etiological relevance of doses taken in different time periods. / To address this challenge, I developed a flexible method for modelling cumulative effects of time-varying exposures, weighted by recency, represented by time-dependent covariates in the Cox proportional hazards model. The function that assigns weights to doses taken in the past is estimated using cubic regression splines. Models with different number of knots and constraints are estimated. Bootstrap techniques are used to obtain pointwise confidence bands around the weight functions, accounting for both the sampling variation of the regression coefficients, and the uncertainty at the model selection stage, i.e. the additional variance due to a posteriori selection of the number of knots. / To assess the method in simulations, I had to develop and validate a novel algorithm to generate event times conditional on time-dependent covariates and compared it with the algorithms available in the literature. The proposed algorithm extends a previously proposed permutational algorithm to include a rejection sampler. While all the algorithms generated data sets that, once analyzed, provided virtually unbiased estimates with comparable variances, the algorithm that I proposed reduced the computational time by more than 50 per cent relative to alternative methods. I used simulations to systematically investigate the properties of the weighted cumulative dose method. Six different weight functions were considered. Simulations showed that in most situations, the proposed method was able to capture the shape of the true weight functions and to produce estimates of the magnitude of the exposure effect on the risk that were close to those used to generate the data. I finally illustrated the use of the weighted cumulative dose modelling by reassessing the association between the use of selected benzodiazepines and fall-related injuries, using administrative data on a cohort of elderly who initiated their use of benzodiazepines between 1990 and 2004.

Seasonal effects on the feeding ecology and habitat of Chersina Angulata in the South Western CapeJoshua,Quinton Ignatius January 2008 (has links)
<p>Nearly one-third of the world&rsquo / s tortoises live in South Africa, but little is known about their habitat requirements and feeding ecology. Chersina angulata, the angulate tortoise, is endemic to  / southern Africa, with a wide distribution along the western and southern coasts. Because this tortoise occupies a number of different habitat types, it has always been considered a generalist  / herbivore, although little is known about its  / diet and other needs. This study evaluates the habitat characteristics and feeding ecology of C. angulata at two study sites in the southwestern  /   /   / Cape, the West Coast National Park (WCNP) and Dassen Island (DI). The WCNP is a large conserved area in the Fynbos biome, along the southwestern coast of South Africa, whereas DI is a  / small offshore island with low floral and faunal diversity, just south of the WCNP. The efficacy of three methods used to study the feeding ecology of herbivores, focal observations, macroscopic faecal analysis and histological analysis of scats, was evaluated. Plant cover, species diversity, and the variety of growth forms were substantially larger at the WCNP than on DI.  / In the WCNP, shrubs and grasses were the dominant growth forms but the vegetation also included herbs, succulents, restios, sedges and parasitic plants. A few perennial species such as  / the grass Ehrharta villosa, shrubs such as Helichrysum niveum, Nylandtia spinosa and Rhus spp., and succulents such as Carpobrotus edulis and Ruschia spp., provided most of the plant  / cover. DI had a depauperate flora, consisting of succulents and herbs, and ephemeral plants contributed more than perennials did to plant cover throughout the year. The succulents Mesembryanthemum crystallinum and Tetragonia fruticosa provided most of the cover on DI. Angulate tortoises are herbivores and 72 diet plants in 32 plant families were identified to the  / species or genus level. Several diet species, however, could not be identified. In  / addition to angiosperms, the tortoises&rsquo / diet included mosses, mushrooms, insects,snails and animal faeces.  / The most important growth forms in the diet were herbs and grasses. The diet of the WCNP tortoises was more diverse than the diet of DI tortoises, but the number of principal food items in  / the diet did not differ between the two sites. Over an annual cycle, WCNP tortoises had four principal food plants while DI tortoises had five principal food plants. At both sites, principal food  /   / plants changed with the season and few plants remained principal food items in more than one season. Cynodon dactylon was a principal food item in three of the four seasons in the WCNP, whereas Trachyandra divaricata was a principal food plant each season on DI. Most principal food plants were grass or herb species but the sedge Ficinia nigrescens, and a succulent that  / could be identified only to the family level (Aizoaceae), featured strongly in the spring diets of DI and WCNP tortoises, respectively.  / The three study methods did not provide the same type or quality of information about the feeding ecology of angulate tortoises. The small size and wary nature of angulate tortoises compromised focal studies because it was often not possible to see  / what the tortoises ate. This method, however, provided the interesting observation that rabbit  / faecal pellets contributed nearly 30% to summer and autumn diets on DI when food was scarce.  / Rabbit faeces may not only provide a source of nutrients but may also supplement the microflora, required to digest cellulose, in the tortoises&rsquo / guts. Macroscopic evaluation of the tortoises&rsquo /   / scats appeared to be an ineffective method to identify diet plants, and the bulk of the scat mass could not be identified. This indicates  / that angulate tortoises either selected food low in fibrous  / content or that the digestive system of the tortoises dealt efficiently with tough plant material. The macroscopic method was the only method that highlighted the large contribution of  / fruits / seeds to the diet of angulate tortoises. Since the tortoises digested many seeds only partially, or not at all, C. angulata is potentially an important agent of seed dispersal in the southwestern Cape. The macroscopic study showed that on DI, sand made up 28% of the scat mass in spring, whereas sand never made a substantial contribution to the scat composition of WCNP tortoises. Lithophagy may be an important strategy in a depauperate habitat, such as DI, because the abrasive action of sand may help with the digestion of tough plants, or the sand may  / provide the tortoises with important minerals that are deficient in their food plants.The histological analysis of scats provided the most comprehensive diet list for C. angulata. Selection indices  / based on data from the histological analysis indicated that angulate tortoises were highly selective in their food choice. Most of the principal food items were selected out of proportion to their  / availability and the tortoises avoided the most abundant plants in their habitats. Several factors, such as palatability, accessibility and profitability, may have influenced their food choice. The proportional similarity indices for WCNP and DI tortoises, respectively, were 0.31 and 0.16, confirming that C. angulata is a food specialist and not a food generalist as was previously thought. This factor should be considered in the management of this species and in future conservation planning of its habitat.  /   / </p>

The goal of this dissertation is to evaluate the effectiveness of model predictive control (MPC)
for a magnetically suspended flywheel energy storage uninterruptible power supply (FlyUPS).
The reason this research topic was selected was to determine if an advanced control technique
such as MPC could perform better than a classical control approach such as decentralised
Proportional-plus-Differential (PD) control.
Based on a literature study of the FlyUPS system and the MPC strategies available, two MPC
strategies were used to design two possible MPC controllers were designed for the FlyUPS,
namely a classical MPC algorithm that incorporates optimisation techniques and the MPC
algorithm used in the MATLAB® MPC toolbox™. In order to take the restrictions of the system
into consideration, the model used to derive the controllers was reduced to an order of ten
according to the Hankel singular value decomposition of the model.
Simulation results indicated that the first controller based on a classical MPC algorithm and
optimisation techniques was not verified as a viable control strategy to be implemented on the
physical FlyUPS system due to difficulties obtaining the desired response. The second
controller derived using the MATLAB® MPC toolbox™ was verified to be a viable control
strategy for the FlyUPS by delivering good performance in simulation.
The verified MPC controller was then implemented on the FlyUPS. This implementation was
then analysed in order to validate that the controller operates as expected through a
comparison of the simulation and implementation results. Further analysis was then done by
comparing the performance of MPC with decentralised PD control in order to determine the
advantages and limitations of using MPC on the FlyUPS.
The advantages indicated by the evaluation include the simplicity of the design of the controller
that follows directly from the specifications of the system and the dynamics of the system, and
the good performance of the controller within the parameters of the controller design. The
limitations identified during this evaluation include the high computational load that requires a
relatively long execution time, and the inability of the MPC controller to adapt to unmodelled
system dynamics.
Based on this evaluation MPC can be seen as a viable control strategy for the FlyUPS, however
more research is needed to optimise the MPC approach to yield significant advantages over

An Euler diagram C = {c_1, c_2,..., c_n}
is a collection of n simple closed curves (i.e., Jordan curves) that partition the plane into connected subsets, called regions, each of which is enclosed by a unique combination of curves. Typically, Euler diagrams are used to visualize the distribution of discrete characteristics across a sample population; in this case, each curve represents a characteristic and each region represents the sub-population possessing exactly the combination of containing curves' properties. Venn diagrams are a subclass of Euler diagrams in which there are 2^n regions representing all possible combinations of curves (e.g., two partially overlapping circles).
In this dissertation, we study the Euler Diagram Generation Problem (EDGP), which involves constructing an Euler diagram with a prescribed set of regions. We describe a graph-theoretic model of an Euler diagram's structure and use this model to develop necessary-and-sufficient existence conditions. We also use the graph-theoretic model to prove that the EDGP is NP-complete. In addition, we study the related Area-Proportional Euler Diagram Generation Problem (w-EDGP), which involves constructing an Euler diagram with a prescribed set of regions, each of which has a prescribed area. We develop algorithms for constructing area-proportional Euler diagrams composed of up to three circles and rectangles, as well as diagrams with an unbounded number of curves and a region of common intersection. Finally, we present implementations of our algorithms that allow the dynamic manipulation and real-time construction of area-proportional Euler diagrams.

Η διπλωματική εργασία συνίσταται στην κατασκευή και λειτουργία μιας πειραματικής
διάταξης, η οποία περιλαμβάνει δύο ρομποτικές αρθρώσεις δύο βαθμών ελευθερίας η
καθεμία, οκτώ πνευματικά έμβολα τύπου μυών και ισάριθμες αναλογικές βαλβίδες
πεπιεσμένου αέρα, μία οθόνη χειρισμού SCADA και έναν Προγραμματιζόμενο Λογικό Ελεγκτή (PLC) για τον έλεγχο της διάταξης.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η πειραματική διάταξη που κατασκευάστηκε είναι ένας ρομποτικός
βραχίονας. Ο βραχίονας αποτελείται συνολικά από τις δύο αρθρώσεις και δύο μεταλλικούς σωλήνες, ο ένας από τους οποίους στερεώθηκε σε πάγκο εργασίας, ενώ ο δεύτερος παρεμβάλλεται μεταξύ των αρθρώσεων. Κάθε άρθρωση έχει εσωτερικά δύο ζεύγη νηματόσχοινων, όπου καθένα προκαλεί από μία κίνηση, περιστροφική με άξονα τον σωλήνα ή περιστροφική περιορισμένη στο επίπεδο που είναι κάθετο στον σωλήνα.
Η έλξη του ενός ή του άλλου σκοινιού από κάθε ζεύγος ορίζει τη φορά περιστροφής. Τα
νηματόσχοινα, που εκτείνονται εσωτερικά των σωλήνων, εξέρχονται στο κάτω μέρος, όπου εφαρμόζουν σε πνευματικούς μύες, υπεύθυνους για την έλξη. Το άλλο άκρο των μυών είναι στερεωμένο στο δάπεδο, ενώ τροφοδοτούνται με πεπιεσμένο αέρα από κατάλληλες βαλβίδες ρύθμισης πίεσης. Η πίεση του αέρα που παρέχεται στους μύες κάθε στιγμή ελέγχεται μέσω του PLC.
Στα πλαίσια των πειραμάτων, αναπτύχθηκαν δύο τρόποι κίνησης του βραχίονα. Στην πρώτη περίπτωση, ο χειριστής έχει τη δυνατότητα να ελέγχει καθεμιά από τις τέσσερις δυνατές κινήσεις ξεχωριστά, μέσω κατάλληλα διαμορφωμένης οθόνης χειρισμού SCADA. Στη δεύτερη περίπτωση, έχει προγραμματιστεί μια προκαθορισμένη κίνηση επίδειξης, που ξεκινά και τερματίζει με εντολή του χρήστη, αλλά δεν μπορεί να επέμβει κατά τη διάρκεια εκτέλεσής της. / -

Transformer fault-recovery inrush currents in MMC-HVDC systems and mitigation strategiesVaheeshan, Jeganathan January 2017 (has links)
The UK Government has set an ambitious target to achieve 15% of final energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology is an attractive solution for integrating offshore wind power farms farther from the coast. In the near future, more windfarms are likely to be connected to the UK grid using HVDC links. With the onset of this fairly new technology, new challenges are inevitable. This research is undertaken to help assist with these challenges by looking at possibilities of problems with respect to faster AC/DC interaction modes, especially, on the impact of inrush currents which occur during fault-recovery transients. In addition to that, possible mitigation strategies are also investigated. Initially, the relative merits of different transformer models are analysed with respect to inrush current transient studies. The most appropriate transformer model is selected and further validated using field measurement data. A detailed electro-magnetic-transient (EMT) model of a grid-connected MMC-HVDC system is prepared in PSCAD/EMTDC to capture the key dynamics of fault-recovery transformer inrush currents. It is shown that the transformer in an MMC system can evoke inrush currents during fault recovery, and cause transient interactions with the converter and the rest of the system, which should not be neglected. It is shown for the first time through a detailed dynamic analysis that if the current sensors of the inner-current control loops are placed at the converter-side of the transformer instead of the grid-side, the inrush currents will mainly flow from the grid and decay faster. This is suggested as a basic remedial action to protect the converter from inrush currents. Afterwards, analytical calculations of peak flux-linkage magnitude in each phase, following a voltage-sag recovery transient, are derived and verified. The effects of zero-sequence currents and fault resistance on the peak flux linkage magnitude are systematically explained. A zero-sequence-current suppression controller is also proposed. A detailed study is carried out to assess the key factors that affect the maximum peak flux-linkage and magnetisation-current magnitudes, especially with regard to fault specific factors such as fault inception angle, duration and fault-current attenuation. Subsequently, the relative merits of a prior-art inrush current mitigation strategy and its implementation challenges in a grid-connected MMC converter are analysed. It is shown that the feedforward based auxiliary flux-offset compensation scheme, as incorporated in the particular strategy, need to be modified with a feedback control technique, to alleviate the major drawbacks identified. Following that, eight different feedback based control schemes are devised, and a detailed dynamic and transient analysis is carried out to find the best control scheme. The relative merits of the identified control scheme and its implementation challenges in a MMC converter are also analysed. Finally, a detailed EMT model of an islanded MMC-HVDC system is implemented in PSCAD/EMTDC and the impacts of fault-recovery inrush currents are analysed. For that, initially, a MMC control scheme is devised in the synchronous reference frame and its controllers are systematically tuned. To obtain an improved performance, an equivalent control scheme is derived in the stationary reference frame with Proportional-Resonant controllers, and incorporated in the EMT model. Following that, two novel inrush current mitigation strategies are proposed, with the support of analytical equations, and verified.

Ce travail de recherche est réalisé dans le cadre d'une collaboration internationale entre l'Université Technique de Cluj-Napoca en Roumanie et l'Ecole Centrale de Lille en France. Cette thèse a comme premier objectif, de réduire l’ondulation de couple d’une machine triphasée 6/8 à réluctance variable grâce aux paramètres de contrôle dans le mode de fonctionnement moteur et générateur. Par conséquent, un modèle analytique a été développé et mis en œuvre dans un environnement de calcul numérique. Un outil d'optimisation permettant de trouver les meilleurs paramètres de contrôle a été utilisé. Toutefois, le processus d’optimisation est très lent.En conséquence, une stratégie pour réduire le temps du processus d'optimisation sans abaisser la précision des résultats est proposée. Une stratégie de ‘mapping’ est utilisée entre un modèle grossier mais rapide et un modèle fin mais lent. Un travail est mené sur le choix du modèle grossier, dans le cadre d’un modèle fournissant des valeurs en fonction du temps. Deux stratégies de ‘mapping’ ont été utilisées dans cette thèse : l’‘Output Space Mapping Proportional’(OSMP) et le Manifold Mapping (MM). Ces deux stratégies sont utilisées pour déterminer les paramètres de contrôle optimaux. Le problème d’optimisation est ensuite complété en ajoutant des variables géométriques au processus d’optimisation du contrôle. Les outils développés sont ensuite utilisés dans le cadre du dimensionnement par optimisation d’un alterno-démarreur automobile. Finalement, des expériences et des essais sur un prototype de Machine à RV sont menés afin de valider les résultats du processus d'optimisation en mode moteur et générateur. / The switched reluctance machine has a simple construction making it cheaper in execution but one of the drawbacks of this machine is the torque ripple. This thesis had as first target, the usage of an optimization tool to calculate the best control parameters to correct this major drawback in motor and generator operation modes. Hence, an analytical model that takes into account the machine geometry and that is able to be simulated in both operation modes by adjusting the commutation angles was provided and implemented in a calculation environment. The second target of this work is to investigate a method to reduce the optimization time without lowering the accuracy of the results. The strategy used in the optimization process is known in literature as the space mapping technique, more precisely for this thesis output space mapping proportional and manifold mapping were studied. After testing them on a mathematical model it was possible to continue the investigation on defining the optimal control parameters of a three-phases 6/8 SR machine prototype, being able that further to use this strategy in a much complicated process, i.e. defining the right geometry and control of a SR machine to be used in automotive integrated starter alternator systems. The final target of the thesis was to conduct experiments and tests on the existing prototype in order to partially validate the results of the optimization process.

Inicialmente são estudados os principios de operação da maquina e a topologia do conversor eletronico de potencia que sera utilizado para aciona-lo. Usando o software de simulaçãoMatlab/Simulink é implementado o modelo da maquina de relutancia variavel utilizando as curvas caracteristicas, de corrente e torque, que foram extraídas utilizando dados experimentais. Utilizando o modelo da maquina é projetado o controlador de velocidade para sua operação no modo motor. Tambem sera projetado o controlador de potência PI utilizando o modelo estimado do sistema de conversão de energia eólica.
A partir dos ganhos do controlador PI é projetado o controlador fuzzy PI autoajustavel com o objetivo de melhorar a resposta em regime permanente da potencia controlada. A potencia gerada pelo gerador de relutancia variavel é injetada à rede eletrica, atraves do controle independente das potencias ativa e reativa, para este proposito é utilizado um conversor trifasico de dois níveis. Na parte experimental deste trabalho foi implementado o controle de corrente por histerese para maquina operando no modo motor, posteriormente foi implementado o controle de corrente e controle da tens~ao no barramento CC para a máquina operando no modo gerador. Os resultados de simulação e experimentais se mostraram coerentes validando os controladores propostos. / This work presents the direct power control of the switched reluctance generator of 12/8 using the self-tuning fuzzy PI controller and the vector control for inverter connected to the grid. Initially, the machine's operating principles and the topology of the power electronics converter used to drive this machine are studied. The model of switched reluctance machine is implemented in Matlab/Simulink simulation software using the characteristic curves of current and torque extracted using experimental data. Using the machine's model, It is designed the speed controller for its operation in motor mode. Also, the PI controller is designed for the power control loop based on the estimation of the wind energy conversion system. Using the gains of the PI controller, It is designed the self-tuning fuzzy PI controller, in order to improve the steady state response of the power control loop. The power generated by the switched reluctance generator is injected into the power grid through the independent control of active and reactive power, for this purpose is used a three-phase two level converter. In the experimental part of this work was implemented the hysteresis current control for machine operating in motor mode, also, It was implemented the current and DC bus voltage control for the machine operating in generator mode. The simulation and experimental results were proved consistent and these results validate the proposed controllers.
