A comparison of the effects of grazing and mining on vegetation of selected parts of northern South Australia

Badman, Francis John. January 2002 (has links) (PDF)
Accompanying CD-ROM inside back cover, includes Appendices. Bibliography: leaves 242-266. This thesis examines the effects on vegetation at selected sites in northern South Australia of excluding various herbivores over a four and a half year period and of two intense but controlled grazing pulses over a six month period followed by an 18 month recovery period in a dune-swale land system. These changes are compared with changes recorded over an 11-year period at the Olympic Dam mine site. It found that short-term changes in vegetation revealed by ordination of periodical cover, density and species richness, are attributable to the periodicity of rainfall and that, under present grazing regimes, rainfall effects override grazing effects. Differences between the effects of sheep and cattle hoof damage are worthy of further investigation, as is the impact of kangaroo grazing. These two factors may have important implications for the management of Australian rangelands. System requirements for accompanying CD-ROM: IBM compatible computer with Pentium processor or higher and Windows 95, 98 or NT ; 4 MB or RAM. Other software: Acrobat Adobe Reader.

Lenz, Tanja I. January 2004 (has links)
"July 2004." / Bibliography: leaves 120-136. / vii, 136 leaves : ill. (some col.), maps ; 30 cm. / Title page, contents and abstract only. The complete thesis in print form is available from the University Library. / Investigates the effects of soil moisture dynamics on the growth and interactions between invasive annual grasses and native perennial grasses in the mid-north of South Australia. At most sites annual grass abundance was positively correlated with rainfall, soil moisture after rainfall and higher soil productivity. Perennial grass abundance was negatively correlated with annual grass abundance and soil moisture after rainfall, and was weakly positively correlated with percentage summer rainfall, elevation, radiation, gravel and slope. Overall perennial grasses responded little to the environmental variables investigated, but strongly to annual grass abundance, while for annual grasses soil moisture was the driving variable. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Adelaide, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Discipline of Environmental Biology, 2004

ES šiaurinio regiono vaidmuo įgyvendinant ES energetinį saugumą XXI amžiuje / The role of the European Union’s North region for realizing EU’s energy security in the 21 st century

Grabliauskaitė, Aušra 12 June 2009 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The main object of this study is to analyze the role of the North region of European Union, ensuring energy security in the EU and foresee the possible perspectives of the EU’s energy policy in the nearest future. The North region is analyzed emphasizing two countries which are main energy suppliers for Europe – Russian Federation and Norway. For a better understanding of the object, the specific proposition has been formulated: the struggle of the national states for energy resources and individual decisions allow energy insecurity in the European Union since the EU’s declared objective „to speak in one voice“ is inconsistent with national interests of EU’s member states. Although the European Union can be defined as the complex of energy security in which the relation of dependence is comprehended as a threat (the main source of this threat is the Russian Federation’s energy monopoly), however the growing consumption and competition for energy resources encourage the countries to search for alternative energy resources and its suppliers. These actions disrupt the initiatives of the common European Union’s energy policy. The political consciousness is not yet grown in the EU’s countries and it determinates the weakness of the EU as a political construct in case of competition with the rising economical powers (such as India and China) for energy resources. On the other hand the consumption is growing in the Russian market as well, which implies possible insecurity of supply... [to full text]

The physical characterization of the fruits showed fruits weighting between 118,17 to 503,26 g, with length and diameter very similar one to another, attributing the fruits a round, ovoid or subglobose shape and average pulp yield of 18,556%, higher than previous reported yields. Total soluble solids, total soluble sugars and reducing sugars contents presented excellent values, besides low contents of phenolic compounds in all the fractions, what characterizes the bacuri pulp as little astringent, denoting potential nor only to “in natura” consumption as also to industry processing. Bacuri fruits must not be considered a good source of Vitamin C. High contents of total and soluble pectins were found in the genotypes M5, M7, M16, M22 and M23, these being the more appropriate to the obtaining of jam or fruit-in-syrup, crystallized fruit and paste sweet. The bacuri fruit pulp is an excellent source of minerals, deserving emphasis its calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, iron and zinc contents.

The analysis approaches the ways in which this capital has been injected in these agricultural industries’ productive dynamics and what have been the spatial dynamics linked to this capital flow. In order to achieve the objective we have focused on this region’s most important productive chains and on agricultural industries that have received financial support from BNDES during the years of 2000 to 2016, focusing on large companies, but also analyzing smaller industries. The theoretical construction was structured over Milton Santos’ conceptual category of Socio-spatial Formation for the understanding of the genesis and the development of agricultural industries from the North region, along with Ignácio Rangel’s theoretical contributions, through the Brazilian Economic Basic Duality, as well as the author’s approaches on economic cycles. The results point to productive forces intense dynamics and productive relations of agricultural industries that have received BNDES’ financial support during the correspondent period, allowing new spatial dynamics and broadening these companies’ increased capital reproduction movement. In relation to the North region of Paraná state, capital flows coming from the financial institution have allowed switches mainly on the rural credit profile within the micro-regions of Ibaiti and Wenceslau Braz, as well as on the production elevation and dynamics of orange, corn, chicken, and coffee productive chains, in addition to the amplification of direct and indirect jobs, along with this region’s more effective insertion within the productive circuit of the industrial sector.
