Economic considerations for expanded feeding of livestock in the Pacific Northwest

Several agricultural and related industry groups in the Pacific Coast states have expressed concern about the competitive position of these states in the production of feed grains and livestock products. This study was directed toward the investigation of these concerns. In order to permit the real world situation, with its accompanying multivariable reality, to be reduced to workable size, a linear programming model was designed. The 48 contiguous states were divided into five regions with smaller regions in the western United States to permit a more detailed analysis of the West. The quantities of feed grains produced in each state were determined and summed for the states in a region. The quantities of fed beef, pork, broilers, turkeys, eggs, and milk (the products of the major grain consuming classes of livestock) demanded in each state were computed. A matrix of transportation costs between regions was developed for feed grains and for the livestock products of the model. Regional weighted average prices received by farmers for each feed grain and for each livestock product were determined. The model was then utilized to indicate production of all the livestock products required for consumption by region at the least cost of producing the products. Optimal solutions were obtained using 1968 and 1969 relative prices and these solutions were analyzed. The analysis indicates that generally the states which are deficit in beef, pork, broiler, and egg production have a slight economic advantage in producing these products for local consumption until the locally produced feed supply is utilized. Each region in the model produced the milk consumed in that region. Region I (Oregon and Washington) has traditionally been self-sufficient in turkey production, and Region III (California) has been a turkey exporting state. According to the model, both of these regions should import the turkey consumed in the region to derive optimum economic benefits. These conclusions are based on the relative prices and transportation costs that existed in 1968 and 1969. After the solutions were obtained, the price of wheat in Region I was varied using a parametric procedure available with the linear programming package. Results of this analysis using 1968 and 1969 relative prices were described. The parametric analysis indicated that at the 1968 price of wheat in Region I more than twice the quantity of wheat allocated to livestock feeding in the basic model could have been economically utilized and would have reduced costs of producing the livestock products consumed in Region I. The 1969 wheat price in Region I was sufficiently low that the parametric analysis indicated an allocation of over four times the quantity used in the basic model for livestock feeding. The basic model utilized 1,043,000 tons of wheat for livestock feeding. It can be concluded from the analysis that Region I could have utilized much larger quantities of wheat for livestock feeding than was allocated for feeding in the basic model. Based on the relative feed ingredient costs that existed in 1968, Region I producers of pork, broilers, eggs, and milk are competitive with other regions in supplying the quantities of these products demanded for regional consumption. The 1969 relative prices made Region I even more competitive in producing pork, broilers, eggs, and milk, and added beef production as an economically advantageous alternative. These conclusions are based only on feed ingredient and transportation costs. If non-feed costs and relative feeder cattle costs for beef production are included, Region I producers appear to have a slight margin for producing beef,for local consumption until locally produced feed supplies are exhausted. / Graduation date: 1972

Development of an expert system for irrigation and fertilization management in the Pacific Northwest

Recent advances in computer technology have made possible the development of expert systems. Expert systems are computer programs that perform at the level of a human expert. Expert systems can help integrate and apply diverse sources of information and expertise to problems of integrated crop management. A prototype Crop Management eXpert (CMX) system has been developed. The primary goal of CMX is to provide recommendations on optimal irrigation and fertilization scheduling for wheat production in the Pacific Northwest. This system can be used by farmers and/or extension agents. OUS II Shell has been used as a implementation tool. To build this rule - based expert system, a development strategy, commonly used in the construction of expert systems, consisting of 1 ) identification; 2) conceptualization; 3) formalization; 4) implementation; and 5) testing was applied. CMX is composed of modules for irrigation and fertilization management. For irrigation management, CMX is mainly involved in the irrigation scheduling which is the major part of irrigation management. Irrigation strategies have been applied in irrigation decision making. For each strategy, timing criteria which generally consist of management allowed depletion, soil water potential, leaf water potential, and water stress indices have been used. The system provides farmers with irrigation scenarios which determine when and how much water to apply. CMX represents an integration of conventional computing and expert systems technology designed to provide expert recommendations enabling farmers to obtain the best return on their water and fertilizer investment. For fertilization management, a variety of variables have been taken into considered. Crop growth stages, soil moisture, nutrient analysis, protein requirement, and application methods are important factors for the fertilizer decision making. Several constraints have been used in optimal fertilizer advice. CMX can focus only on relevant information, thus reducing the problem space to a manageable size and significantly, improving the efficiency of the system. The facility of the expert system to explain the decision-making process enables users to better understand the underlying assumptions, facts, and reasoning used to generate recommendations. The CMX prototype demonstrates the feasibility of employing expert systems technology in agricultural applications. CMX has been validated and evaluated. The survey results showed that this prototype was successful in capturing domain experts' knowledge as rules and providing advice on the irrigation and fertilization management for wheat. / Graduation date: 1993

The seismic structures of the U.S. Pacific Northwest and the scaling and recurrence patterns of slow slip events

xv, 136 p. : ill. (some col.) / The Pacific Northwest of the United States has been tectonically and magmatically active with the accretion of the Farallon oceanic terrane "Siletzia" ∼50 Ma. The accretion of Siletzia terminated the flat-slab subduction of the Farallon slab and initiated the Cascadia subduction zone. In this dissertation, I focus on both the large-scale tectonic structures preserved seismically in the crust and upper mantle, and the small-scale, short-term aseismic processes on the plate interface. I measure the shear-wave splitting trends around eastern Oregon with a dataset of ∼200 seismometers from 2006-2008 to analyze the upper-mantle anisotropy. The delay times between splitted shear-waves range from 0.8 s to 2.7 s. In the High Lava Plains, the fast polarization direction is approximately E-W with average delay time ∼1.8 s. I infer that there must be significant active flow in a roughly E-W direction in the asthenosphere beneath this area. The splitting pattern is more variable and complicated in NE Oregon, where the crust and mantle lithosphere may be a significant contribution. In terms of the imaged seismic velocity structures, I infer that the Eocene sedimentary basins in south-central Washington lie above a magmatically underplated crust of extended Siletzia lithosphere. Siletzia thrusts under the pre-accretion forearc, and its southeast termination is especially strong and sharp southeast of the Klamath-Blue Mountains gravity lineament. Magmatic intrusion has increased upper crustal velocity as in the less active Washington Cascades, but the higher temperatures beneath the magmatically active Oregon Cascades have a dominating effect. To better understand the physical mechanism of slow slip events on the plate interface, I explore the scaling relationships of various source parameters collected mainly from subduction zones worldwide and also other tectonic environments. The source parameter scaling relationships of slow slip events highlight the similarities and differences between slow slip phenomena and earthquakes. These relationships hold implications for the degree of heterogeneity and fault healing characteristics. The recurrence statistics of northern Cascadia events behave weakly time predictable and moderately anti-slip predictable, which may indicate healing between events. Seismic studies of the northern Cascadia accretionary prism: sediment consolidation and gas hydrates

This thesis work was directed at aspects of two related problems: (1) sediment compaction and fluid expulsion processes in a subduction margin accretionary prism, and (2) the nature and concentration of gas hydrates that form bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs) observed in the accretionary prism sediments of the northern Cascadia margin. The formation of the gas hydrate and the occurrence of BSRs in the study area are believed to be mainly a consequence of upward fluid expulsion in the accretionary prism. Therefore, the two study objectives are closely correlated. Most of this thesis work was carried out analyzing multichannel seismic data and incorporating available information including downhole and other geophysical measurements. Seismic techniques, such as velocity analysis, forward modelling, and waveform velocity inversion, were used in analyzing the data to advance our understanding of the tectonic and geophysical processes in a dynamic accretionary prism environment. The velocity structure and the inferred porosity variations across the frontal region of the accretionary prism have been quantitatively assessed by a detailed seismic velocity analysis. Within the Cascadia basin sediments approaching the deformation front, and within the frontal thrust zone of the accretionary prism, seismic velocities increase landward as a result of sediment consolidation. An important conclusion is that more than one third of the pore fluid content of the incoming sediment is lost by the time they are incorporated into the accretionary prism. In the lower slope region of the deformation front, a pronounced velocity decrease is evident. This low-velocity zone is explained by underconsolidation resulting from rapid horizontal shortening and vertical thickening of the sediment column, accommodated by displacements along thrust faults or by distributed deformation. A prominent BSR becomes visible immediately landward of the deformation front in the accreted sediment, and is developed over much of the low-to-mid continental slope. The upward pore-fluid migration is believed to play an important role in the formation of a gas hydrate BSR. From the estimated fluid loss of 35% over the 3-km-thick Cascadia Basin sediments with an average sediment porosity of 30%, the quantity of the expelled fluid reaches 315 m3/m2 over a distance of 12 km before the basin sediments are incorporated into the accretionary prism. Assuming that 100 mmol/L of methane is removed from the expelled fluid as it moves into the hydrate stability field, a 90-m-thick layer with an average hydrate saturation of 10% of the pore space can be formed by the rising fluids. A velocity-depth function in the lower slope region, representing a no-hydrate/no-gas reference profile, has been established from the detailed semblance velocity analyses and the ODP log data. The observed and measured sediment velocities near the ODP drill sites increase downward more rapidly than the reference profile above the BSR. Based on the reference profile, the velocity inversion results imply that the velocity increase due to hydrate above the BSR accounts for ~2/3 of the impedance contrast required to produce the BSR reflection amplitudes. The remainder of the impedance contrast appears to come from the velocity decrease associated with small concentrations of free gas below the BSR. The integrated analysis of the multichannel seismic and ODP downhole velocity data has allowed the velocity enhancement associated with the formation and concentration of gas hydrate to be estimated. If the BSR is overlain by a 100 m zone of sediment with a mean porosity of 50% in which the hydrate saturation increases linearly from zero at the top of the zone to 20% at the BSR, the estimated hydrate concentration-depth profiles indicate a total hydrate amount of about 5 m3/m2 of ocean floor or methane amount of 820 m3/m2 at STP. Throughout the Vancouver Island continental margin, where the clear BSR have been observed in an area of 30x200 km, the total methane gas estimated can amount to about 175 Tcf (trillion cubic feet) or 2.6 Gt of carbon. / Graduate

If the psychiatrist's belief that childhood determines adult behaviour is true, then historians should be able to ascertain much about the fabric of past cultures by examining the way in which children were raised. Indeed, it may be argued that the roots of new cultures are to be found in the growing up experiences of the first generation. Such is the premise adopted in this thesis, which explores the emergence of the Metis in the Pacific Northwest by tracing the lives of fur trade youngsters from childbirth to old age. Specifically, the study focuses on the children at Fort Vancouver, the Hudson's Bay Company headguarters for the region, during the first half of the nineteenth century — a period of rapid social change. While breaking new ground in childhood history, the thesis also provides a social history of fur trade society west of the Rocky Mountains. Central to the study is the conviction that the fur trade constituted a viable culture. While the parents in this culture came from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds, their mixed-blood youngsters were raised in the 'wilderness' of Oregon in a fusion of fur trade capitalism, Euro-American ideology and native values — a milieu which forged and shaped their identities. This thesis advances the interpretation that, despite much variation in the children's growing up experience, most fur trade youngsters' lives were conditioned and contoured by the persistent and sometimes contrary forces of race, class and gender. In large measure, the interplay of these forces denoted much about the children's roles as adults. Rather than making them victims of 'higher civilization,' however, the education of fur trade children allowed them access to both native and white communities. Only a few were 'marginalized'. Gambling games of the Northwest Coast

Northwest Coast gambling paraphernalia are found in many museums and are usually accompanied by very meagre catalogue entries. The Accumulation of a number of sources pertaining to this category of material culture was therefore seen as a worthwhile task. Even a superficial examination of these gambling implements suggests that they were associated, with a very popular and possibly important activity, at least prior to European contact. This paper is an attempt to construct a profile of gambling on the Northwest Coast and to assess its importance in the culture. Three main sources of data were drawn upon for this purpose: (1) the material culture itself and the associated records located in museums; (2) the published ethnographic literature; and (3) the published myths. From these sources the analysis yielded a number of conclusions. The first is that gambling was a very popular activity. Secondly, a large degree of homogeneity can be seen to have existed in the areas considered. With a few exceptions, basically similar games of chance were played throughout the entire area, areal differences being quantitative rather than qualitative. A similar pattern is seen in the themes of gambling stated in the myths: there are a few main themes, but details differ from place to place. A third conclusion is that gambling usually involved very high stakes; and a fourth is that losing much was considered shameful, especially when a gambler lost other people's property. A fifth conclusion, supported by the data, is that serious gambling for high stakes was considered strictly a man's activity. A sixth conclusion is that cheating was common, expected, and accepted as part of the play as long as it was not discovered.
