Previous issue date: 2013-03-01 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Subsurface acidity in Brazilian soils is one of the main factors that cause crop yield reduction and is closely related to high concentrations of Al3 + in depth in the soil. An effective and viable alternative to reduction or elimination of subsurface acidity is to apply gypsum in the soil. In this sense, the objective of this trial was to investigate the effects of gypsum application and time of contact in the soil chemical (Ca, Mg, K, Al, SO42-, pH water e pH CaCl2) and physical (water aggregate stability, MWD, GMD, SAI and micro and macroporosity), assess possible changes in different Al pools (amorphous Al, organic matter bound Al and crystalline Al) and productivity, nutrient uptake (Ca, Mg, K, S, P and N) and agrotechnological variables of sorghum influenced by rates of mineral gypsum. A field test was set up in randomized block design. It was evaluated the application of 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 t ha-1 of gypsum at three depths (0.0-0.2, 0.2-0.4 and 0.4-0.6 m) in four times [before applying gypsum (0), 15, 64 and 90 days after applying gypsum] to the chemical characteristics of the soil. 5 months after gypsum application soil physical characteristics was evaluated. In plots that received 0, 4 and 8 t ha-1 of gypsum and at 0 and 15 days after application Al forms in the soil were evaluated and was evaluated the effect of gypsum rates in the production, nutrient uptake and agrotechnological characteristics of sorghum. Mineral gypsum application promoted changes in soil chemical characteristics throughout the soil profile (0-0.6 m) by raising the levels of Ca and SO42- and reduced, in the subsoil, Al3+ concentrations and its saturation. It not promoted K+ and Mg2+ leaching and did not promote changes in soil aggregation and stability. Increasing the time of mineral gypsum contact with the soil, greater effect of its performance was observed mainly the rise in exchangeable Ca in subsurface. There was increase of amorphous forms of Al in the subsurface, reduction of forms bounded to organic matter and there was no interference in the crystalline forms of Al in the soil profile. It was observed increase in Ca uptake and reduction in K uptake, besides increasing sorghum productivity. There was no interference in the agrotechnological variables of sweet sorghum.

A SOLUTION-CULTURE ASSESSMENT OF PHOSPHORUS STATUS ON MAIZE GROWTH AND NUTRIENT DYNAMICSMatthew Alan Wiethorn (16644279) 26 July 2023 (has links)
<p> Phosphorus (P) is a key element for maize (<em>Zea mays</em> L.) production and plays many important roles in plants. Soil-buffering of P does not allow for precise control of solution concentrations in the field, while greenhouses, growth chambers, and hydroponics provide limiting conditions. Thus, an objective of this study was to develop a practical technique for cultivating several maize plants to physiological maturity (R6) in a growth room environment, with precise control of nutrient availability and timing, and evaluate its utility for the purpose of measuring plant responses to variations in P concentration using a silica-sand-based solution culture technique. A semi-automated growth room for conducting nutrient studies on 96 maize plants was constructed and evaluated to quantify plant growth response to a range of solution P concentrations. Maize yield components were measured and compared to values for field-grown plants. Due to ideal conditions and successful simulation of light intensity, diurnal fluctuations in temperature and relative humidity, and changing photoperiod, grain yield and tissue nutrient concentrations were comparable to field-grown maize, although with greater shoot biomass. The second objective was to quantify the uptake and partitioning of nutrients as affected by P concentration at various maize growth stages. Thus, two maize hybrids were grown under both sufficient and insufficient P fertility rates using the silica-sand-based solution culture technique. Throughout the growth stages, sufficient-P plants had more than double the biomass compared to insufficient-P plants. At R1, N partitioning followed a similar pattern in both treatments, while P remobilization differed, with insufficient-P plants relying on stem tissue and sufficient-P plants remobilizing P from leaf and root tissue for grain production. Plants grown under sufficient-P fertility matured more rapidly and reached physiological maturity (R6) sooner. Sufficient-P fertility resulted in 2- to 3-fold greater grain, leaf, stem, and root biomass at R6 than insufficient-P. Nutrient partitioning patterns to plant tissues between P treatments were generally similar, except for insufficient-P plants allocating more nutrients to root tissues than sufficient-P plants. Partitioning patterns for B and Cu indicated that the high demand of maize reproductive structures for these nutrients may justify a foliar application of B and/or Cu at vegetative growth stages in some cases. The results of these studies suggests that there is great utility in further utilizing this silica-sand-based solution culture technique for more complex plant nutrient studies. </p>

Flooding dynamics and nutrient retention in the middle Ebro floodplain: experimental assessment and numerical modelingGonzález Sanchis, María del Carmen 23 April 2012 (has links)
CORN GRAIN YIELD COMPONENTS AND NUTRIENT ACCUMULATION IN RESPONSE TO NITROGEN, PLANT DENSITY AND HYBRIDSantoro, Maria Julia 01 January 2018 (has links)
Modern maize hybrids exhibit higher yields, increased biomass production, stress tolerance and greater nitrogen (N) use efficiency. Increased biomass accumulation can influence nutrient uptake and lead to increased nutrient removal. Hybrids were tested at seeding rates (SR) of 74000 (low) and 148000 (supraoptimal) plants ha-1 and at N rates of 0 (deficient) and 390 (non-limiting) kg N ha-1. Plants were sampled at V7, V14, R3, R5 and R6 and separated into vegetative and reproductive fractions for determination of dry matter and N accumulation. Grain yield was harvested at R6.
The high SR and high N treatment combination resulted in greatest biomass accumulation, crop growth rates, and N accumulation per hectare in both vegetative and grain tissues.
The high SR and high N combination maximized grain yield at 20.6 Mg ha-1, essentially through an increase in kernels ha-1. High SR decreased kernel weight, even with high N. At the higher plant densities resulting from the high SR, however, average utilization of available N was enhanced. The results have implications for improved management practices under high input systems and providing insight to growers who incorporate variable seed and N rates.

Nutrient uptake by seagrass communities and associated organisms [electronic resource] : impact of hydrodynamic regime quantified through field measurements and use of an isotope label / by Christopher David Cornelisen.Cornelisen, Christopher David. January 2003 (has links)
Includes vita. / Title from PDF of title page. / Document formatted into pages; contains 185 pages. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of South Florida, 2003. / Includes bibliographical references. / Text (Electronic thesis) in PDF format. / ABSTRACT: Seagrass communities are composed of numerous organisms that depend on water-column nutrients for metabolic processes. The rate at which these organisms remove a nutrient from the water column can be controlled by physical factors such as hydrodynamic regime or by biological factors such as speed of enzyme reactions. The impact of hydrodynamic regime on rates of nutrient uptake for seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) communities and for organisms that comprise the community (seagrass, epiphytes, phytoplankton, and microphytobenthos) was quantified in a series of field flume experiments employing the use of 15N-labeled ammonium and nitrate. Rates of ammonium uptake for the entire community and for seagrass leaves and epiphytes were significantly dependent on bulk velocity, bottom shear stress, and the rate of turbulent energy dissipation. / ABSTRACT: Relationships between uptake rates and these parameters were consistent with mass-transfer theory and suggest that the effect of water flow on ammonium uptake is the same for the benthos as a whole and for the organisms that form the canopy. In addition, epiphytes on the surface of T. testudinum leaves were shown to depress leaf uptake by an amount proportional to the area of the leaf covered by epiphytes. Water flow influenced rates of nitrate uptake for the community and the epiphytes; however, uptake rates were depressed relative to those for ammonium suggesting that uptake of nitrate was also affected by biological factors such as enzyme activity. Epiphytes reduced uptake of nitrate by the leaves; however, the amount of reduction was not proportional to the extent of epiphyte cover, which provided further evidence that nitrate uptake by T. testudinum leaves was biologically limited. / ABSTRACT: As an additional component of the research, hydrodynamic regime of a mixed seagrass and coral community in Florida Bay was characterized using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter. Hydrodynamic parameters estimated from velocity data were used in mass-transfer equations to predict nutrient uptake by the benthos over a range of water velocity. Measured rates of uptake from field flume experiments conducted in the same community confirmed that hydrodynamic data could be used to accurately predict nutrient transport to the benthos under natural flow conditions. / System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader. / Mode of access: World Wide Web.
